LHP Brandon Parillo keeps mowing them down; 17-year-old SS Harold Mejia could be a phenom (25-for-77), but guess what - he hasn't walked yet! PHOENIX (AP) - Arizonans usually just shrug when the mercury climbs beyond 100 degrees and the breeze feels like a giant hair dryer pointed at your face. But lately, even the most seasoned desert dwellers are complaining about the blowtorch heat.

Temperatures have been above average every day since June 29 in Phoenix, where the normal high in the middle of July is a sizzling 107.

''This has gone on a little too long,'' said Joe Della Rocca, a 41-year-old Arizona native. ''All I know is Vancouver sounds fabulous right now.''

The city hit 116 degrees on Sunday, two degrees above the old record for the date, set in 1936. Phoenix was almost mild compared with the Colorado River Valley, where Bullhead City reached 124 on Sunday and Needles, Calif., hit 125.

Even nighttime readings were no comfort over the weekend. Monday morning's low in Phoenix was 91.

''At the heat of the day, at 2 p.m., almost the whole town is dead,'' said Yvonne Morales, owner of the Baskin Robbins 31 Flavors in Bullhead City, across the Colorado River from the air-conditioned casinos of Laughlin, Nev. ''The streets are pretty bare because you're insane to come out in this.''

Last week, at the urging of a radio station in Chicago, Morales put a scoop of ice cream on a sidewalk to see how long it would take to melt. It took just 8 seconds for the scoop to turn to goo.

The disc jockeys in Chicago ''were laughing at us,'' she said.

Police in Phoenix got reports of seven possible heat-related deaths during the weekend, said Sgt. Randy Force. Six of the victims were homeless, and the seventh was an 81-year-old woman. Phoenix usually has five to 10 deaths in a whole year, he said.

The city should see ''a little cooling'' Tuesday, when the high is forecast at 113, the weather service said.

Hot as Helena

By Aaron Morton

Ogden Standard-Examiner staff

OGDEN -- Tomorrow is another day.

That was Ogden Raptors manager Juan Bustabad's mantra after his team got hammered by the Helena Brewers 12-3 Monday night at Lindquist Field.

One could hear a batting glove drop in the clubhouse after the game as the Pioneer League-leading Brewers beat the Raptors in just about every element of the game.

Helena raced out to a 7-0 lead and never looked back, reeling off 20 hits on the way to handing Ogden its worst loss of the season.

"We just got to erase it," Bustabad said. "It's only one game; you can't just drop your head -- keep your head up."

Keep your head up -- and get a lot of hits.

The Raptors' bats have hit a brick wall. They were shut out Sunday in Missoula and were blanked until the fifth inning Monday. They did get eight hits, but they were well scattered.

Ogden also took a beating on the mound.

Helena's batters -- especially Brendan Katin and Matt Gamel -- pummeled the Raptors hurlers with two doubles and two singles each. Katin and Gamel, the No. 4 and No. 5 hitters, combined for four doubles and four singles.

"They can hit; we know that," Bustabad said. "You just got to pitch better, and it all starts with your starting pitcher."

Marlon Arias, who had the team's second-best ERA (3.48) among starters going into the game, gave up eight hits and seven runs -- four earned.

Juan Rivera's error in the first inning allowed three unearned runs and put the Raptors in a 3-0 hole. Helena extended the lead to 4-0 in the second on Ned Yost's first home run of the season.

After two solid innings, Arias started to struggle again, giving up a home run over the right-field wall that was crushed by Helena center fielder Charlie Fermaint.

The funniest moment of the game in the bottom of the second inning. With two outs, Jason Mooneyham hit a come-backer to pitcher Kevin Roberts, who threw the ball to first base for what looked like an easy out. However, the first baseman Yost lost the ball in the sun, and it went right by him.

When the next batter, James McDonald, hit another grounder right to Roberts, he took no chances, running from the mound all the way to first.

Those plays were nearly topped in the fifth. After Soto and David Sutherland got back-to-back one-out singles, third baseman Russ Mitchell hit pitcher Ronny Malave in the rear end with a hard-hit grounder.

The ball rolled to the first-base line where Mitchell had to stop and start on his way to first base to avoid the tag, allowing Soto to score. B.J. Richmond then drove in Sutherland with a sacrifice fly.

Homers lead to Brewers victory

By IR Staff

Helena took the lead and ran away with a 12-3 win over Ogden Monday.

The Brewers had 20 hits on the night while Ogden could only manage eight.

Three runs were scored by Helena in the first and another two were scored in the second to take the lead 5-0.

Helena's first baseman Ned Yost got his first home run of the year in the top of the second on a pitch by Marlon Arias with no one on and no outs.

Charlie Fermaint of the Brewers hit a homer in the top of the fifth to add six to his season total. Fermaint's home run off of Arias was also a solo shot.

Helena's Brendan Katin doubled to left field and then scored on Matt Gamel's line-drive double to right field. Katin has five doubles on the season, while Gamel has six.

Ogden would score their first two runs in the fifth, but couldn't manage to comeback.

Katin and Gamel both had two doubles on the night. Gamel had three RBI.

Angel Salome added two RBI for 37 on the season and Fermaint now has 21.

The Brewers will continue play against Ogden today with the first pitch set for 7:05 p.m. (8:05 Central).

Suns snap Power streak

The Hagerstown Suns used a big four-run fourth inning on the way to an 8-2 win over the West Virginia Power Monday night at Appalachian Power Park.

The Suns took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first, when James Burt singled in Matt Fisher and Ambiorix Concepcion.

The Power tied the game at 2-all after Ryan Braun and Grant Richardson hit back-to-back two-out homers off Suns starter Michael Devaney in the bottom of the first.

Things would remain tied until the top of the fourth, when Hagerstown put a four-spot on Power starter Greg Kloosterman (3-13) to take a 6-2 lead and chase him from the game after four innings.

Burt and Russ Triplett hit consecutive doubles to start the inning, giving the Suns a 3-2 lead. After a strikeout and a walk to Yury Santana, Kloosterman fired a wild pitch that got away from catcher Clay Blevins, allowing the runners to move to second and third. Next up, Carlos Gomez reached on an error by second baseman Hernan Iribarren that allowed Triplett and Santana to score, making it a 5-2 game. After stealing second base, Gomez would come around to score on a single by Concepcion, making it 6-2 Suns. Kloosterman got Mike Carp on a groundout to end the inning, but that would be the end of the day for the Power starter. Reliever Derek Decarlo came in to start the fifth inning.

West Virginia just missed a scoring opportunity in the bottom of the fifth when Alcides Escobar was thrown out at the plate trying to score from second on a single to right by Braun.

Hagerstown increased its lead to six in the top of the ninth on Mike Carp?s two-run homer to left off Robert Hinton, making it 8-2 Suns.

Concepcion was 3-for-5 with a triple, a run scored and an RBI to lead Hagerstown.

Braun was 3-for-4, raising his batting average to .244 after struggling to start his Power career.

Devaney (6-1) pitched six strong innings, fanning eight to get the win for the Suns (9-15). Reliver Joseph Serfass pitched three scoreless innings to pick up his second save of the season.

Kloosterman went four innings, surrendering three earned runs on six hits with five strikeouts to take the loss for the Power (12-12).

The loss snaps West Virginia?s season-long four game winning streak and moves West Virginia back to .500 for the second half of the season.

The Power will play host to Hagerstown tonight to close out the four-game home-and-home series. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. (6:05 Central). The Power will throw right-handed pitcher Josh Baker (1-4, 6.79).

Brevard County Site Game Summary:

MANATEES LATE RALLY FALLS SHORT

The Manatees staged an epic comeback in the late innings of Monday night's game, only to be foiled in losing to the Ft. Myers Miracle 3-2.

Ft. Myers took the early lead after control problems forced Manatees starter Ben Diggins to walk the bases loaded in the first inning. A two-out double by Brock Peterson emptied the bases and proved to be all the run support the Miracle would need. Diggins would pitch the second inning before a trio of Manatees, Forrest Martin, Darwin Soto, and Brian Wolfe, shut out the Miracle for the rest of the game.

It got interesting in the bottom of the ninth after the Manatees staged a late rally. With two outs and no one on base, Wandel Campana singled to left. This brought Robby Deevers to the plate, where he promptly singled to right to put runners on the corners. With Steve Sollmann batting, Miracle reliever Jannio Gutierrez balked to score Campana from third. Gutierrez managed to regain his composure and induced Sollmann into a game-ending ground out to second.

The loss Monday night combined with St. Lucie's victory over Clearwater forces a two-way tie for first place in the Eastern Division. The Manatees look to regain sole possession of first place at Space Coast Stadium on Wednesday night at 7:00 pm (6:00 Central) against the Daytona Cubs.

Stars Start Road Trip With Comeback Win

David Bradley worked seven strong innings and Vinny Rottino collected three hits and knocked in three runs to lead Huntsville past Mobile 9-2 Monday night in the opener of a four-game set at Hank Aaron Stadium. The Stars snapped a two-game slide and improved to 13-11 in the second half of the season, while the BayBears dropped their eighth straight contest to fall to 5-15 and remain winless since July 3. Huntsville stays in third place in the North Division one game behind front-running Carolina, which defeated Chattanooga, and a half game behind West Tenn, which shutout Tennessee, who fell into fourth place, a game and a half off the pace.

Mobile starter Brian Whitaker, in his fourth start against the Stars this season, blanked the visitors on two singles through the first five innings but yielded three runs and the lead in the sixth. Tony Gwynn, Jr. started the rally with a leadoff bunt single, advanced to second base on a single by Kennard Bibbs and scored, along with Bibbs, when Rottino tripled into the alley in left-center field. Brad Nelson grounded out for the first out of the inning but Brandon Gemoll followed with a single to center field through a drawn-in infield to put Huntsville on top to stay at 3-2.

Whitaker lasted seven innings in his longest start against Huntsville and suffered the loss after allowing three runs on eight hits with one walk and four strikeouts. Whitaker has received a total of four runs in his four outings against the Stars and has been tagged with three of his 10 losses by the visitors.

The Stars added a run in the eighth inning and five more in the ninth, as Mobile?s defense melted down and committed four errors in the final two frames. Rottino and Enrique Cruz singled home runs in the ninth, while a fielding error by former big league infielder Jesse Garcia, his second in two games with Mobile, allowed another run to score and a throwing by third baseman Corey Smith permitted two runs to score. The Stars have now won their last four games and six of the nine played at Mobile and lead the season series 10-3.

Whitaker started the BayBears two-run third inning rally with a single and eventually came in to score on a bases loaded single by Paul McAnulty that put the home team up 1-0. Ronnie Merrill knocked in a run with a two-out single later in the inning before Joe Gerber struck out for the second of four times in the game to end the frame.

Luke Carlin led off the fourth with a single and Bradley proceeded to retire the next nine hitters before Carlin singled again and wound up getting stranded at third in the seventh. The right-hander earned his fourth win of the year after his longest outing during which he yielded two runs, one earned, on seven hits and fanned a season-best seven. Bradley had lasted just one inning in his last start eight days ago at Mississippi after giving up four runs. Brett Evert took over and retired all six hitters he faced to earn his first save since joining the Stars.

The series continues Tuesday night with right-hander Dennis Sarfate returning from the disabled list to make the start for the Stars against BayBears? right-hander Mike Thompson. Coverage of the game gets underway at 6:50 p.m. central time on ESPN 1450 AM and through the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com.

Sounds Topple Redbirds, Snap Three-Game Skid

NASHVILLE ? The first-place Nashville Sounds snapped their three-game skid with a 9-3 victory over the division-rival Memphis Redbirds on Monday evening in the opener of a four-game series at Greer Stadium.

With the victory, Nashville (53-43) extended its lead to four games over the Redbirds in the PCL American Conference Northern Division and recorded its fourth victory in five contests against Memphis this season.

Nashville starting pitcher Jeff Housman allowed three runs over five innings to earn his second victory in his last 11 starts and belted a two-run homer to help his own cause.

Prince Fielder and Tony Zuniga led the Sounds? offense with three-hit efforts and Mike Rivera drove in three runs during a 2-for-3 evening.

The Sounds grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning on shortstop Chris Barnwell?s one-out RBI single. Nashville doubled the lead in the third with a two-out rally against Memphis starter Chris Gissell. Fielder singled to left before coming around to score on a Nelson Cruz RBI double to left-center. The two-bagger gave Cruz a hit in 13 of his first 14 games with Nashville.

Memphis halved the lead in the top of the fourth when Brandon Berger singled home Scott Seabol.

Housman helped his own cause in a big way in the bottom of the frame, belting a two-run homer to right off Gissell. The longball was the first of his professional career and extended the Nashville lead to 4-1.

Redbirds right fielder Raul Gonzalez matched Housman?s feat in the fifth, drilling a two-run homer of his own off the left-hander down the left field line to score Bo Hart, who had walked.

Fielder, who continued his recent hot hitting with a 3-for-4 evening, doubled to lead off the bottom of the fifth and scored on Zuniga?s RBI two-bagger two batters later to up the Sounds? lead to 5-3.

Nashville put up a four-spot in the home half of the seventh to put the game out of reach at 9-3. Rivera delivered the big blow when he tomahawked a Josh Kinney pitch deep to left for a three-run homer, his fifth tater of the year.

Housman (4-7) earned his first victory in four starts after allowing three runs and matching his season-high with six strikeouts, which came consecutively from the first to third innings, over five innings of work. Gissell (7-6) took the loss after surrendering five runs on eight hits over five frames.

Former Redbird Clint Weibl delivered three scoreless innings of relief for the Sounds against his former club before Jose Capellan hurled a perfect ninth to close it out.

The teams continue the series with a 7 p.m. meeting on Tuesday evening at Greer Stadium. Right-hander Rick Helling (8-3, 4.27) will make the start for the Sounds and face Memphis right-hander Adam Wainwright (6-6, 3.71).
