Hart HR in 12th lifts Sounds

Nashville earns 19th win in its final at-bat

By MAURICE PATTON

Tennessean Staff Writer

It's official: Corey Hart is Public Enemy No. 1 of the Memphis Redbirds.

The Nashville Sounds all-star outfielder led off the 12th inning with a solo home run to deal the visitors a 5-4 loss last night. On July 3, Hart's solo shot in the 10th decided an 8-7 Sounds win.

For Nashville, it was the 19th win in the team's final at-bat and the fourth game-winning home run at Greer Stadium. It also marks the fifth Sounds win in six outings against Memphis and extends the team's lead in the Pacific Coast League American North to a season-high five games.

"I just wanted to get up there and get on base, get a rally going," Hart said after his ninth home run of the season. "I was more happy with what happened.

"(Before the July 3 game-winner) I hadn't done that in three seasons. It's not something you look to have happen, but you'll take it."

Hart was the first Nashville baserunner since Julio Mosquera's two-out, bases-loaded walk in the seventh drove in Hart to give the Sounds a 4-3 lead ? a lead Memphis erased in the top of the eighth on Scott Seabol's RBI base hit.

The Redbirds blew a chance to take a 10th-inning lead when right-fielder Nelson Cruz made a stellar running catch on a Seabol drive to right field with runners at first and third and one out. Bo Hart apparently tagged up and scored on the play, but Cruz threw back to first and doubled off Chris Duncan to complete an inning-ending double play. Hart crossed the plate before Duncan was doubled off but the run didn't count, presumably because umpires ruled Hart failed to tag up from third.

"I thought they'd be tagging, but I caught it and I heard everybody yelling 'one' (first base)," Cruz said.

"That was an outstanding catch," Manager Frank Kremblas said. "When he hit it, you're thinking, just keep it to one run. Then he stuck his glove up, and I still didn't think he caught it; next thing, he's throwing to first base."

Dearly departed: Nashville pitcher Justin Lehr was called up by the Brewers. Lehr, who was 7-7 with a 3.99 ERA in 27 games (11 starts), will take the roster spot vacated by Wes Obermueller, who was optioned by Milwaukee to the Sounds. Obermueller was 1-2, 4.62 in 18 games (six starts).

Up the charts: Hart stole his 22nd and 23rd bases of the season during the seventh inning . The steals gave him the team lead, breaking a tie with current Brewers infielder Trent Durrington. He also moved into third place on the Pacific Coast League list ? behind Portland's Kerry Robinson (26) and Omaha's Adrian Brown (24).

Game at a glance

? Winning pitcher: Clint Weibl (2-2).

? Big stick: Corey Hart, 2-for-5, two stolen bases, game-winning solo home run.

? How they won: Hart led off the 12th with a solo shot off Memphis reliever Bill Pulsipher after the Redbirds bullpen had retired 13 consecutive Nashville hitters. It was the third Nashville lead ? the Sounds squandered 3-2 and 4-3 margins. The Nashville relief corps allowed one unearned run in 5+ innings.

? What they said: "I think it'll be easier for us than them (to play at 12 noon today). But we can't let up here. They're going to come back a little upset. We've got to be ready." ? Sounds Manager Frank Kremblas.

? Today's pitchers: Sounds ? RHP Ben Hendrickson (4-7, 4.53 ERA). Redbirds ? RHP Anthony Reyes (7-3, 3.08).

Fielder gets last word

By Nate Rau, nrau@nashvillecitypaper.com

Talk is always cheap. Even when it?s two of the top minor league prospects engaged in a shouting match, which leads to an ejection for one of them.

After Monday?s war of words between Nashville?s Prince Fielder and Memphis? Adam Wainwright, which ended with Fielder getting ejected, the two got to face off for real Tuesday.

Wainwright, listed as the No. 2 prospect in the Cardinals organization, took the hill for Memphis and Fielder was in the lineup for the Sounds.

One night earlier, Wainwright and other members of the Redbirds bench thought Fielder came in high on Redbirds catcher Brad Cresse on a play at the plate. He responded by yelling something to Fielder, who let loose a tirade which led to his ejection. While Fielder stormed back onto the field, Wainwright remained inside the dugout.

Nashville manager Frank Kremblas could have given Fielder the day off on Tuesday, but elected to play his star slugger.

?I think [Monday night] was a situation where things get heated and people say things they don?t mean and then put it behind them the next day,? Kremblas said.

In the third inning, Fielder popped a ball the opposite way that carried all the way over the fence for his 18th homer of the year. Fielder?s trip around the bases was without incident.

?I wasn?t worried about him too much after my first at-bat,? Fielder said. ?Once the game started, I was just ready to play baseball. It was just another home run.?

Fielder, who finished 1-for-3, said neither Wainwright or any of the other Redbirds had words for him during the game.

In the second inning, Wainwright had a breaking pitch get away from him that plunked Steve Scarborough in the head. That?s when home plate umpire Kevin Sweeney administered warnings to both benches to prevent any more drama between the two teams. There were no other incidents following the warning.

Sounds' Bennett released from hospital

Sounds reliever Jeff Bennett was released from Summit Medical Center yesterday after spending the previous two days there with viral meningitis.

"Everything's fine now," the former Gordonsville star said from the team clubhouse at Greer Stadium prior to yesterday's game. "I'll be back to playing next week."

It was the first time Bennett had been at the stadium since he pitched in the second game of Friday's doubleheader against Albuquerque.

Meningitis is an inflammation of the membranes that cover the brain and spinal cord. The inflammation can be bacterial or viral. Bacterial meningitis is less common but considerably more serious than viral and can be life-threatening.

The frequency of viral meningitis increases in summer and fall but is often undiagnosed because it resembles the flu.

When it was reported yesterday that they were expecting him to miss a couple weeks with flu-like symptoms, I had thought about the possibility of viral meningitis. Fortunately for him its the viral and not the considerably more serious bacterial variety.
