More Honors for the Angelic One:

Pioneer League

Angel Salome, Helena

7 G, 31 AB, 9 R, 17 H, 3 2B, 0 3B, 2 HR, 10 RBI, .548 AVG, 1 SB

The Pioneer League Offensive Player of the Week award continues to be monopolized by two hitters as Helena's Angel Salome took the honors for the second time in four weeks after two consecutive wins for Ogden's Sergio Pedroza. Salome, the Brewers' fifth-round pick in 2004, has absolutely owned Pioneer League pitching since he went 3-for-5 in the season opener. Since then, the 19-year-old from the Bronx has collected four more three-hit games and three four-hit games in just 24 starts to lead the league with a .438 average. Last week, Salome went 10-for-18 (.556) with a home run and five RBIs in a four-game series against Ogden, including a 4-for-4 performance July 13. He followed that up by going 7-for-13 (.539) with three doubles, a homer and five RBIs in a three-game set against Orem. On the season, Salome is the league leader in hits (46), RBIs (35) and slugging percentage (.705) while ranking second in extra-base hits (16), third in doubles (10) and on-base percentage (.487) and fifth in runs scored (24).

Another homerun for Prince. Looks like he has finally shaken off the rust from his stint in Milwaukee. 21 years old and putting up a .880 OPS in AAA. Wow. It was nice knowing you Lyle.

Yep. Hopefully sooner rather than later. It has become painfully obvious how very average Lyle is. I reckon it wouldn't hurt to have Prince's bat in the lineup.http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

Final: Ogden (Dodgers) 10, Helena 9, ten innings

Helena Box Score:

Fermaint, Salome, Katin, and Chapman all on base three times apiece; pretty hideous night on the mound -- starter Ryan Marion walked seven, knuckleballer Luis Bernal hit two batters, Tyler Morrison managed to allow three inherited runners to score, give up two runs on his own, and throw three wild pitches in one fun-filled inning of work, and Richard Breshears lost it in the 10th...

Helena Game Log:

Remember kids, this pinball Pioneer League baseball is just a tad short of the High Desert hijinks, but it's still wild, wild stuff most nights -- factor that into all analysis; a lot to digest here, but entertaining -- how did Ned Yost end the 8th, perhaps trying to score on a wild pitch?

Nashville Site Game Summary:

NASHVILLE ? It was déjà vu all over again for outfielder Corey Hart and the Nashville Sounds on Tuesday evening at Greer Stadium.

Sixteen days after belting a game-ending solo homer in the bottom of the tenth inning to defeat Memphis on July 3, Hart struck again, crushing a game-ending shot off Redbirds reliever Bill Pulsipher to lead off the bottom of the twelfth that gave the first-place Sounds a dramatic 5-4 victory over their division rivals.

Hart?s blast, his ninth of the year, resulted in the Sounds? 19th last at-bat victory of the season and propelled Nashville (54-43) to a season-high five-game cushion over the second-place Redbirds in the PCL American Conference Northern Division.

The Redbirds grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning against Sounds starter Rick Helling. Skip Schumaker led off with a single, stole second, and scored on Raul Gonzalez?s one-out RBI single. Memphis doubled the lead in the third when Redbirds starting pitcher Adam Wainwright led off with a double to right-center then came in to score when Schumaker followed with an RBI single to left-center.

Prince Fielder tied the contest with one swing of the bat in the bottom of the third, going the other way for a game-tying two-run homer to left off Wainwright. The blast was the slugger?s team-leading 18th of the year. Warren Morris, who opened the inning with a single, scored on the tater.

Nashville grabbed a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the sixth with an unearned run. With two outs, Steve Scarborough doubled. Helling followed with a routine grounder to shortstop but John Nelson?s throw was wide of first base, allowing Scarborough to score the go-ahead run.

Memphis first baseman quickly re-tied the game at 3-3 with a mammoth leadoff solo blast to right off Helling to open the seventh, his seventh roundtripper of the year.

Sounds catcher Julio Mosquera drew a two-out, bases-loaded walk from Redbirds reliever Jimmy Journell to plate Hart for a 4-3 Nashville lead.

The Redbirds responded quickly once again, tying the game on Scott Seabol?s one-out RBI single up the middle in the top of the eighth off Nashville reliever Jose Capellan, who suffered his second blown save of the year.

Right fielder Nelson Cruz made the defensive play of the day for Nashville to maintain a tie score in the top of the tenth. With runners on first and third and one out, Seabol lifted a fly ball to right that Cruz tracked down at the wall for a running catch. With both Memphis runners moving on the play, Cruz threw to first base to double off Chris Duncan and end the threat.

Reliever Clint Weibl (2-2) picked up the victory for the Sounds after tossing a scoreless inning of relief, while Pulsipher (3-6) absorbed the loss after surrendering Hart?s game-ending longball.

The teams continue the series with a noon matinee on Wednesday afternoon at Greer Stadium. Right-hander Ben Hendrickson (4-7, 4.53) will toe the rubber for the Sounds and face Memphis right-hander Anthony Reyes (7-3, 3.08).

Huntsville Site Game Summary:

Steve Baker doubled home two runs and Dale Thayer worked out of a bases loaded jam in the ninth inning to preserve Mobile?s 3-1 win over Huntsville Tuesday night in the second game of a four-game set at Hank Aaron Stadium. The BayBears improved to 6-15 in the second half and won for the first time since beating Mississippi on July 3, while the Stars dropped to 13-12 in the second half and remained in third place, now a game and a half behind front-running West Tenn, which defeated Tennessee and leapfrogged over a defeated Carolina.

Thayer opened the ninth on the hill for the home side and started the frame by giving up a single to Enrique Cruz, who has hit safely in 11 straight against Mobile, and walking Guilder Rodriguez, the eighth issued by BayBears pitching. John Vanden Berg dropped down a sacrifice bunt to move the runners before pinch-hitter Nelson Castro walked to load the bases. Tony Gwynn, Jr. then grounded sharply to shortstop Jesse Garcia, who knocked the ball and threw from his knees to second baseman Ronnie Merrill for the force and his relay throw to first beat Gwynn to complete the game-ending twin killing.

Garcia reached on a Cruz throwing error with one out in the fifth and moved to second base when Paul McAnulty walked for the second of three times on the night. Corey Smith lined out on a diving catch by left fielder Brad Nelson for the second out of the inning but Baker drilled Dennis Sarfate?s next pitch into the alley in left-center field to score both runners to give Mobile a 2-1 lead and knock the Stars? starter out of the game. Sarfate, pitching for the first time in 15 days after being sidelined by a blister on the middle finger of his pitching hand, allowed two unearned runs on three hits and a season-high six walks. The right-hander suffered the loss to drop to 7-6 on the season and 3-1 against the BayBears in his four starts against them.

Alec Zumwalt recorded the final out in the fifth in his first appearance since June 2 and gave up an unearned run in the sixth inning. Nick Trzesniak walked to open the frame, moved to second on a Vanden Berg passed ball, to third on a Mike Thompson single and scored on a fielder?s choice grounder by Kennard Jones. Mobile had its lead off man aboard in each of the first seven innings and all three runners who scored did not reach base with a hit.

Thompson lasted 6 1/3 innings and allowed a lone run on four hits with five walks and five strikeouts. He squared his season record at 6-6 and beat the Stars for the first time in four tries after being bested by Sarfate in each of his first three starts. Paul Abraham and Craig Breslow combined to toss 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief behind Thompson.

The series continues Wednesday night with right-hander Glenn Woolard taking the hill for the Stars against BayBears? right-hander Travis Chick. Coverage of the game gets underway at 6:50 p.m. central time on ESPN 1450 AM and through the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com.

Raptors bounce back in 10th-inning

Godwin's blast beats Brewers

By Aaron Morton

Ogden Standard-Examiner staff

OGDEN -- Some nights are just your night.

Monday night it was the Brewers' night.

Tuesday night was the Raptors' night.

After taking their worst loss of the season to the Helena Brewers, the Raptors had scraped and hit their way back into the lead. And lost it. And tied it. And won it in extra innings -- a 10-9 nail-biter at Lindquist Field Tuesday night in front of 4,696 thrilled fans.

"Unbelievable," center fielder Adam Godwin said. "It was our best game at home. If you weren't here, you missed out."

The fans certainly got their money's worth. The game had it all: home runs, wild errors, hit batters, close calls and clutch hits -- none more clutch than Godwin's two-out RBI single in the bottom of the 10th inning. His soft drive into right field scored B.J. Richmond -- who reached his first hit of the night in six plate appearances.

"It was a team victory," said Godwin, who went 3-for-5. "I just happened to be the last one to get the last hit."

The first hit might have been just as important as it was the first time in five games that Ogden had the early lead against Helena.

The Raptors got it when Apodaca drove in David Sutherland, who drew a two-out walk. In fact, the newly shaven-headed Sutherland, Ogden's leader in batting average, was 0-for-2 with four walks on the night.

However, that lead quickly evaporated as the game started to look a lot like Monday night's 12-3 thumping.

One of the main thumpers was center fielder Brendan Katin, who was 4-of-6 with two doubles the night before. He hit his first of two opposite-field home runs over the right-center wall in the second inning. The first was a solo-shot, the second -- a two run blast -- capped a four-run third inning.

But unlike Monday, the Raptors climbed back into the game bit-by-bit.

The Raptors loaded the bases once in the third and twice in the fifth but scored just two runs. They got another in the sixth to cut the lead to just two runs (6-4).

But things continued to look bleak until Brewers pitcher Tyler Morrison walked up the mound.

The Raptors were down 7-4 and had already stranded 10 batters. And now in the eighth, the Raptors had the bases loaded again for clean-up hitter Russ Mitchell. Helena manager Ed Sedar pulled knuckle-baller Luis Bernal and replaced him with Morrison.

First pitch -- a high and inside wild pitch, scoring Godwin from third.

Second pitch -- Mitchell tattoos the ball off the top of the wall in left center, driving in two more runs and tying the game 7-7.

Three pitches later, catcher Juan Apodaca crushed a double of the left-field wall to score Mitchell and give the Raptors an 8-7 lead. But a two-error ninth inning led to two Helena runs and the Brewers got back the lead only to have Shane Justis drive in pinch runner D.J. Jackson in the bottom of the ninth to extend the game to extra innings for the first time this season for the Raptors.

RAPTORS NOTES: Justis replaced second baseman Jesus Soto in the sixth inning. Soto was hit in the left arm by Brewers pitcher Ryan Marion in the fifth. He ran the bases, scored a run, but was replaced defensively. ... The Raptors hold a commanding lead in the Pioneer League attendance. Going into Tuesday's games, Ogden has averaged 3,725 fans a game. The next closest team is Great Falls (2,845). Helena has the lowest attendance (1,064).

Brewers fall in extra innings

By Helena IR Staff

The Helena Brewers failed to close the door on Tuesday and the Ogden Raptors rumbled through the opening with a come-from-behind 10-9 win over Helena in 10 innings in front of 4,656 fans in Ogden.

Helena took the lead in the fourth inning and held it at 7-4 heading into the bottom of the eighth inning before the wheels fell off.

Ogden (16-12) scored four runs in the eighth for an 8-7 lead.

Helena came back with two runs in the ninth but gave up the tying run in the bottom of the frame to send the game into extra innings.

The Brewers failed to score after putting runners at first and second with no outs in top of the tenth. Helena retired the first two Raptors in the bottom of the tenth before giving up a single and hitting a batter to set up the game-winning RBI single by Adam Godwin.

In losing the game, the Brewers failed to capitalize on Brendan Katin's big night.

The 23rd round draft pick out of the University of Miami hit home runs in the second and third innings and finished with three hits and three RBI in the game. He now has eight home runs on the year.

Charlie Fermaint also had three hits and scored three runs in the game for the Brewers. Angel Salome extended his hitting streak to 13 games with an RBI single in the top of the fifth inning.

The two teams meet again tonight in Ogden at 7:05 p.m. (8:05 Central).

Sounds outlast ?Birds in 12

By Nate Rau , nrau@nashvillecitypaper.com

Tuesday night?s meeting between first-place Nashville and second-place Memphis played out like an epic back-and-forth game of tug-of-war. Neither Volunteer State rival budged until the bottom of the twelfth inning.

That?s when, after three hours and thirty-eight minutes of baseball, Sounds All-Star right fielder Corey Hart jacked a game-winning homer to left field off Bill Pulsipher to give Nashville a 5-4 win.

?Obviously I was tired,? Hart said. ?I was just trying to hit it really hard to get the inning going. I wasn?t trying to hit a home run.?

The Sounds now have a season-best five game lead over Memphis in the PCL American North Division.

?It?s an extra inning big win, those are always big,? Sounds manager Frank Kremblas said. ?From a mental standpoint, it?s an important win for us.?

Nashville?s Nelson Cruz made a game-saving, over-the-shoulder catch in the top of the 10th inning on a ball hit deep to right center by Scott Seabol. Cruz then turned around and doubled up Chris Duncan to end the inning and the Redbirds scoring threat.

The Sounds had to use five pitchers to secure the win. Kane Davis and Clint Weibl combined to throw three scoreless innings at the end. Weibl (2-2) earned the win and has pitched well in the first two games of this four-game set against the Redbirds.

?I thought our pitchers did a good job,? Kremblas said. ?Defensively, we made some miscues, but our pitchers pitched around them.?

The Sounds took the lead in the seventh inning, when the Memphis bullpen derailed. Memphis relievers Carmen Cali and Jimmy Journell teamed up to load the bases and eventually walk the go-ahead run. Hart scored when Journell walked Julio Mosquera.

Memphis answered back in the top of the eighth. That?s when Seabol hit a ball up the middle and a miscommunication between Chris Barnwell and Warren Morris of the Sounds allowed Bo Hart to score the game-tying run for Memphis.

Both starting pitchers were far from untouchable, but settled into grooves of their own.

After a rocky start, Memphis starter Adam Wainwright settled down to go six innings, surrendering three runs on seven hits. Rick Helling had his usual lengthy outing, going 6.2 innings and also picking up the no decision.

Prince Fielder hit his second homer in three days ? a two-run shot which tied the game in the third.
