Final: Memphis (Cardinals) 3, Nashville 1, ten innings

NASHVILLE ? The Memphis Redbirds scored a pair of unearned runs in the top of the tenth inning to post a 3-1 victory over the Nashville Sounds on Thursday evening at Greer Stadium in the finale of a four-game series.

With the win, Memphis (50-49) avoided a four-game sweep and reduced the Sounds? lead in the PCL American Conference Northern Division to five games.

The Sounds? defense, which has committed a PCL-leading 111 errors on the year, fell apart in the top of the tenth. After John Gall reached on a leadoff walk from Nashville reliever Clint Weibl, the Sounds made fielding errors on consecutive sacrifice bunts by Skip Schumaker and Bo Hart. The gaffs by third baseman Tony Zuniga and Weibl allowed Memphis to fill the bases with no outs.

After Weibl retired Raul Gonzalez on a flyout, Redbirds pinch-hitter Pete Zoccolillo gave the visitors a 2-1 lead with a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Gall. Memphis added an insurance run when Schumaker came plateward on a Weibl wild pitch to up the advantage to 3-1.

Both offenses were dormant in the early going as the teams combined for only eight hits through five scoreless innings. Nashville outfielder Nelson Cruz gave the home team a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the sixth when he belted his fourth homer as a Sound and 20th overall longball of the year, a one-out solo shot to right-center off Memphis starter Mark Nussbeck. Cruz, who finished 2-for-4, has hit safely in 16 of 17 Triple-A games this season.

Sounds spot starter Mike Meyers turned in an outstanding effort, holding the Redbirds scoreless on just three hits through six frames but took a no-decision when the Redbirds rallied to tie the game against Nashville reliever Kane Davis in the seventh. Chris Duncan led off the inning with a double, moved to third on a groundout, and came home to tie the game at 1-1 on Tim Hummel?s two-out RBI single. The blown save was the team-high fourth of the year for Davis.

Nussbeck, who also took a no-decision, matched Meyers? solid performance with one of his own for the Redbirds, surrendering only one run on eight hits while fanning five over seven frames.

Redbirds reliever Carmen Cali (3-4) earned the victory after tossing two scoreless innings, while Weibl (2-3) took the loss after allowing the winning runs in his lone frame of work. Ricky Stone atoned for his blown save a day earlier, tossing a perfect bottom of the tenth to earn his first save for the Redbirds.

The Sounds travel to Omaha, Nebraska on Friday for a four-game series against the division-rival Omaha Royals. Right-hander Gary Glover (2-1, 1.80) will start the 7:05 p.m. CT series opener and face Omaha right-hander Danny Tamayo (4-6, 5.68).

Not Prince Fielder's day, now hitting .251...

Brevard County Site Update:

Somewhat tounge-in-cheek version -- fun...

DARKNESS HALTS MANATEES GAME

Full Moon Blamed

An unlit light tower forced Thursday's Brevard County Manatees game against the Daytona Cubs to be suspended due to darkness with the score tied 0-0 in the middle of the sixth. The remainder of the game will be made up tomorrow at 5:00 (4:00 Central) with the regularly scheduled game, to be played in its entirety, immediately following.

Prior to being suspended, Manatees starter Ryan Costello was pitching a three-hit shutout while striking out nine and walking only one. Daytona starter Randy Wells was equally impressive in pitching five innings and allowing only five hits while striking out seven. During the shortened game Manatees catcher Lou Palmisano was 2-2.

Ironically, with a full moon overhead, the Daytona Cubs team bus refused to turn over. Another bus was dispatched from Daytona Beach to pick up the Cubs. To make it all the more freaky, the Manatees promoted reliever Brian Wolfe earlier in the week.

Tomorrow night Margaritaville Shrimp presents Parrothead Madness at the ballpark. Join the Manatees and Margaritaville Shrimp in celebrating the music of Jimmy Buffett. All fans presenting Margaritaville Shrimp packaging to the box office will receive two for one tickets.

GRIFFITH BLANKS THE POWER

Huntsville Site Game Summary:

Clements Clout Sends Stars to Defeat

Jason Clements belted a two-out, walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift Mobile to a 4-3 victory over Huntsville Thursday night in the final game of a four-game set at Hank Aaron Stadium. The BayBears improved to 8-15 in the second half and won the last three games of the series by a total of four runs, while the Stars slipped to 13-14 in the second half and to 20-28 on the road. The Stars wound up splitting 12 games at Mobile this season and have seven games left with the BayBears at home next month.

Andy Pratt had retired all five hitters he faced since taking over in the eighth inning but the southpaw fell behind Clements 3-1 and the Mobile shortstop deposited the next pitch over the wall in left field for his third home run of the season and second against the Stars on home soil. Pratt suffered his first loss with the Stars and yielded his third home run in five appearances.

Rusty Tucker opened the ninth on the hill for Mobile, taking the mound for a second straight night and third time in the series. Enrique Cruz singled with one out and scored to tie the game at three when John Vanden Berg followed with a double to centerfield, his second run batted against the BayBears this season and first since May 11.

Ty Taubenheim had blanked the BayBears on two singles before the home team rallied for three runs in the seventh to take the lead. Corey Smith led off with a walk and moved to third base on an infield single with one out by Luke Carlin after a tremendous diving stop and one-hop throw to first base by third baseman Vinny Rottino. The BayBears cut the Stars lead to 2-1 when Clements followed with a single to score Smith and send Carlin to third base. Ben Van Iderstine made a diving catch on a fly ball hit by Casey Baker for the second out before Ronnie Merrill delivered a pinch-ht triple into the right field corner to plate both runners to put Mobile on top at 3-2.

Brandon Gemoll?s first inning home run, his second in as many games, third in Mobile, fifth on the road and seventh of the season, gave the Stars the early lead. Nelson Castro singled home Vanden Berg in the second inning to extend the visitors lead to 2-0. Mobile starter Jose Oyervidez then neutralized the Stars bats over the next five innings, allowing only two singles while striking out seven en route to a season-high nine punchouts. The right-hander lasted seven innings for a fourth time this season and remained winless since June 19.

The Stars make their first visit to Birmingham over the weekend, opening a three-game set Friday night with southpaw Josh Habel taking the hill against Barons right-handed knuckleballer Charlier Haeger. Coverage of the game gets underway at 6:45 p.m. central time on ESPN 1450 AM and through the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com.

Final: Helena 5, Orem (Angels) 3, ten innings

Helena Box Score:

Bob Uecker and Ned Yost spoke extensively about Ned Yost IV in today's pre-game, almost sounds like Ned might get an update or two from our "coverage" -- nah, probably not; my goodness, look at all those batting averages; Angel just being Angel -- three hits, two doubles, one passed ball; LHP Joe Thatcher allows one run in getting the save in his professional debut -- game log indicates it a bit of a "cheap" run...

Orem errors in 10th give Helena win

Neil Warner can be reached at nwarner@heraldextra.com.

Orem shortstop Hainley Statia's running backhanded stop in the seventh inning on a ball hit in the third-base hole and his throw to first to get the runner was a big-league play.

Catcher Brett Martinez's block on wild pitch that bounced a foot in front of the plate with runners on second and third in the eighth inning was big league.

But what happened to the Orem Owlz in the top of the 10th inning of a tie game against Helena was a big-league meltdown.

Orem committed three errors in the inning that helped Helena break open the game and post a 5-3 win Thursday night in Orem.

Despite a handful of defensive gems, Orem's overall defense had an off night. The Owlz committed five errors and gave Helena three unearned runs.

When you give the highest scoring team in the league that many extra outs, it's not hard to predict the outcome.

Orem's problems started in the top of the 10th when Helena's Agustin Septimo hit a comebacker to pitcher Francis Abreu, who reached up and tried to bare-hand the ball. He knocked it down and picked it up, but his throw to first was way off the mark, allowing Septimo to take second.

Angel Salome promptly doubled in the go-ahead run. Brendan Katin followed with an RBI single. After Matt Gamel reached on a a fielder's choice, Kenny Holmberg singled.

Orem then gave Helena another run when Stephen Chapman hit the ball up the middle to Statia, who stepped on second and fired to first. The throw bounced in the dirt and was knocked down by first baseman Mark Trumbo.

Gamel alertly broke for home and scored when Trumbo's throw sailed over Martinez's head.

When the dust had settled, Orem had effectively shot itself in the foot.

The Owlz staged a rally in the bottom of the 10th when pinch-hitter Josh Cowles was hit by a pitch and Dallas Morris doubled down the right-field line to score Cowles. But Trumbo grounded out to end the game.

Orem pitcher Stephen Marek gave the Owlz another quality start, giving up just one run and four hits over five innings. But Orem's offense struggled to give Marek any run support.

Trailing 1-0, Orem's Billy Boyer tied the game in the third with a solo home run to right-center field.

The Owlz took the lead with a run in the fifth when Patrick Reilly led off the inning with a single, took second on a wild pitch and advanced to third when Helena pitcher Wilfrido Laureano tried to pick him off second, but instead threw the ball into center field.

Reilly came home on a sacrifice fly from Boyer.

Helena tied the game with a run in the sixth thanks to some more help from Orem. Salome singled. After Lennyn Morillo struck out Katin, Helena's hottest hitter (batting .442), he tried to pick off Salome. His throw went off Trumbo's glove, allowing Salome to take second.

Salome scored when Gamel hit a grounder that ate up Boyer at second and bounced into right field.

The win helped Helena improve its Pioneer League leading record to 21-8, while Orem dropped back to .500 at 15-15.

The same two teams play again tonight at Parkway Crossing Field in Orem.

Brewers get win in Ogden

By Helena IR Staff

The Helena Brewers came away with a 5-3 win over the Orem Owlz after an extra inning in Orem on Thursday.

Helena moved a season-high thirteen games above .500 to 21-8 with the win.

The game didn't start out as planned after the first three Brewers up to bat grounded out in the first inning.

The same luck went for the Owlz as Helena's Wilfrido Laureano pitched two strike outs in the bottom of the first.

Helena scored its first run in the second on an RBI single by Stephen Chapman.

Orem's Billy Boyer homers in the bottom of the third for the Owlz first run of the night.

The Brewers scored in the sixth after Angel Salome scored on a fielding error by Boyer at second base.

The game was tied 2-2 and went into extra innings, where the Brewers quickly scored three runs in the 10th inning.

Salome doubled on a line drive allowing Agustin Septimo to score. Brendan Katin then singled to center field for a RBI.

Salome and Katin extended their hitting streaks to 15 and 16 games respectively in the contest.

The Brewers will play in Orem again tonight with the first pitch set for 7:05 p.m. (8:05 Central).

Excerpts from the Mobile Register:

Mobile's Jason Clements made sure the BayBears didn't have to endure another extra-innings marathon by whacking a dramatic two-out walkoff homer to beat Huntsville 4-3 Thursday night at Hank Aaron Stadium.

Clements, who finished the night 2-for-4, ripped an Andy Pratt fastball deep to left field to give Mobile (8-15) its third straight win, which came on the heels of the longest game in BayBears history -- a 2-1, 19-inning, five-hour win on Wednesday night.

"We needed this one, because we played too much Wednesday night," Clements said. "Five hours to do anything is long enough, but to play baseball is even harder. It was nice to play only nine innings tonight."

Huntsville went up 2-0 when Brandon Gemoll homered in the top of the first and John Vanden Berg scored on Nelson Castro's second-inning single.

Stars starter Ty Taubenheim went seven innings, allowing three runs and five hits while striking out 10 and walking two. Pratt (0-1) took the loss, while Gemoll went 2-for-4.

Rusty Tucker came on in the top of the ninth with the BayBears leading 3-2. But after getting Brad Nelson to ground out, he gave up a single to Enrique Cruz and Vanden Berg followed with an RBI double to tie it 3-3, setting the stage for Clements' game-winning homer.

"They were saying I didn't get all of it, but I hit it well and I got under it," Clements said. "He (Pratt) gave me the worst pitch he could have thrown -- a middle-in fastball. It was a good pitch to hit, and it was a mistake pitch for sure."

Sounds fall in 10th, costing team sweep

Two errors in inning pave way for victory by Memphis

By MAURICE PATTON

Tennessean Staff Writer

After inflicting so much late-game pain on the Memphis Redbirds, the Nashville Sounds suffered a little of their own last night.

A leadoff walk and back-to-back fielding errors led to a pair of 10th-inning runs and a 3-1 Sounds loss ? preventing the home team from recording its second four-game series sweep of the season.

Nelson Cruz accounted for the only Nashville run, giving his team a lead with a solo homer in the sixth inning. That was all the offense, though, as the Sounds were once again hitless in eight at-bats with runners in scoring position.

"We had eight hits in the first seven innings but we couldn't get anything going with them," Manager Frank Kremblas said. "I didn't think we had bad at-bats. They made some pitches and made some plays in the outfield.

"You've got to produce in those situations, but you're not always going to get it done."

Memphis tied the game on a seventh-inning Tim Hummel RBI single that eventually forced extra innings.

In the 10th, reliever Clint Weibl walked John Gall before ensuing sacrifice bunt attempts by Skip Schumaker and Bo Hart were bobbled by Tony Zuniga and Weibl. One out later, Pete Zoccolillo's pinch-hit sacrifice fly scored Gall, and a Weibl wild pitch brought in Schumaker with the insurance run. Redbirds reliever Ricky Stone retired Nashville in order for the win.

Deep rotation: Mike Meyers became the ninth different pitcher to start for the Sounds this season when he took the mound last night. Making his first appearance since returning from Class AA Huntsville on July 20, Meyers pitched a season-high six shutout innings and allowed just three hits.

"Mike did an outstanding job," Kremblas said. "That's a good hitting team. He was effective. He had thrown well in Huntsville."

In 11 relief appearances after arriving in Huntsville on June 11, Meyers compiled a 1.71 ERA.

Kremblas was unsure whether Meyers ? starting due to Justin Lehr's recent promotion to Milwaukee ? would remain in the rotation or return to the bullpen.

"I don't know what they want us to do with (Wes) Obermuller," he said. Obermuller will join the Sounds during their upcoming series in Omaha.

Sounds starters are 25-29 this season; the bullpen is 30-15.

Play at the plate: Memphis was kept off the scoreboard in the fifth inning despite the best efforts of outfielder Brandon Berger. After leading off the inning with a double and moving up on a groundout, Berger tried to score on Hummel's grounder to shortstop Steve Scarborough. The throw beat Berger to the plate and he bowled over catcher Julio Mosquera trying ? unsuccessfully ? to knock the ball loose.

Ironically, the Redbirds were in an uproar over Nashville's Prince Fielder coming in high on catcher Brad Cresse during Monday night's game.

Sidelined: Nashville relievers Mike Adams and Jeff Bennett have been placed on the disabled list ? Adams because of a strained left oblique, Bennett following his bout with viral meningitis. The moves leave the Sounds two short of the 24-man active roster limit.

Bennett can return to the roster as early as Monday, Adams as early as Tuesday.

Hometown hero: Illinois native Ryan Knox had a pair of hits last night with the Bloomington/Normal Baseball Association 'gold' team in the stands. The team is participating in the NABF 15-U World Series this week in Portland and White House. Knox worked with various members of the team during the offseason as a hitting instructor.

What they said: "I'm not thinking about that yet, because there are so many games left. We've got eight left with them, and they're all at their place, so five can be erased really quickly." ? Kremblas, referring to his team's five-game lead over Memphis in the PCL American North standings.

Tonight's pitchers: Sounds ? RHP Gary Glover (2-1, 1.80 ERA). Royals ? RHP Danny Tamayo (4-6, 5.68).

No sweep for Sounds as Redbirds win 3-1

By Nate Rau, nrau@nashvillecitypaper.com

It took them all week, but the Memphis Redbirds finally figured out the Nashville Sounds. After Nashville beat them every way imaginable in the first three games of the series, Memphis bested Nashville 3-1 in ten innings.

It?s only the second time in eight tries Memphis has beaten Nashville.

In the tenth inning, the Sounds were undone by their own defensive errors. After reliever Clint Weibl walked Memphis? John Gall, the Sounds committed back-to-back errors on Memphis bunts to load the bases. Third baseman Tony Zuniga and Weibl were the Nashville players who misplayed the bunts.

?In the tenth, we shot ourselves in the left foot and then we shot ourselves in the right foot on those two bunt plays,? Kremblas said.

Pinch hitter Pete Zoccolillo followed with a sacrifice fly, which scored Gall. Weibl also threw a wild pitch, which allowed the insurance run to score.

In the bottom of the ninth, Nashville seemed to have the game won when Ryan Knox lined a ball down the left field line, which likely would have scored Corey D. Hart from first base. However, home plate umpire Todd Tichenor ruled the ball foul.

?It wasn?t [fair],? Kremblas said. ?It was just barely foul by a couple of inches.?

The first five innings amounted to a stare-down between Sounds starter Mike Meyers and his Memphis counterpart Mark Nussbeck. Neither pitcher surrendered a run.

Meyers, who was making his first Nashville start since rejoining the team from Double-A Huntsville Wednesday, retired ten straight Redbirds at one point.

Typically used as a reliever, Myers? outing ended after a season-best six innings. He surrendered just three hits while shutting down the Memphis offense on just 77 pitches.

?He was outstanding,? Kremblas said. ?Those guys are a good hitting team.?

Nussbeck threw seven innings, scattering eight hits and allowing just one run.

The run came in the sixth. That?s when Nashville?s Nelson Cruz stole attention away from the hurlers when he belted his fourth home run of the season to right-center off Nussbeck. The solo shot gave the Sounds a 1-0 lead.

Memphis answered in the seventh, notching a run off Kane Davis, who relieved Meyers. With two outs, Tim Hummel plated Chris Duncan with an RBI single up the middle. The run meant an unfortunate no-decision for Meyers.

Memphis missed a chance to do more damage when it stranded two runners in scoring position in the eighth. Again in the ninth, the Redbirds left a runner on second.

Sounds place pair on DL: Nashville put two of its relief pitchers on the disabled list Thursday. Jeff Bennett was placed on the DL retroactive to July 15 when he last pitched. Bennett has meningitis, but is expected to recover soon. Mike Adams hurt himself during the Monday?s opening game of the series, while warming up. He is listed as having a ?left oblique strain.?

The team is two short of its 24-man roster limit, pending the arrival of Wes Obermueller, who will join the team today after being optioned down by Milwaukee. The Sounds have not yet decided how to use Obermueller ? as a starter or out of the pen.

Reliever Tommy Phelps, who hasn?t pitched because of knee soreness since being demoted by Milwaukee July 17, figures to see action this weekend, Kremblas said.
