Power pitchers hit tough times

Michael Dailey

Charleston Daily Mail sportswriter

As a former Major League pitcher and current minor league pitching coach, John Curtis knows the importance of a lively arm and pinpoint control.

Curtis also knows the importance of patience when dealing with young pitching prospects.

He knows that learning to pitch professionally involves more than a strong arm.

That's why a recent five-game stretch, in which West Virginia Power pitchers dished out 27 walks, surrendered 56 hits and allowed 34 runs to the Lakewood BlueClaws, isn't particularly discouraging.

"We can't expect these youngsters to become Major League-quality pitchers overnight," said Curtis following the Power's 8-3 loss to the BlueClaws Sunday at Appalachian Power Park. "They're going to learn more from their failures than they are from their successes."

The loss, in front of 2,313 sweat drenched fans, dropped the Power to 14-15, while Lakewood improved to 14-16.

"Generally the work has been good," Curtis said, "but we're going to have days when pitches are up and they get hit.

"Another thing to consider is that this is a time of year when they're way beyond their pitching inning totals from years past.

"They've thrown a lot of pitches. It's a process, but I truly see development here."

The best way for Curtis, a first-round pick by the Red Sox in 1968 and 15-year big league veteran, to handle the ups and downs associated with coaching young pitchers, is to remember back to his own days as a struggling minor leaguer.

"All you have to do is remember when you were 20 years old," said Curtis. "That helps put things into perspective.

"My second-year (professionally) was the worst year of my life," continued Curtis, who played with the Red Sox, Cardinals, Giants, Padres and Angels. "It was a low-A club in the Western Carolinas League (1969 at Greenville, S.C.). I led the league in walks and it was just a horrible year.

"I think most of the kids here are doing better than I ever did in that year. So, I hold out for them that they're going to go through down times, but things are going to get better. You just have to keep going after it. You don't get discouraged and you don't give up."

As Curtis once learned, today's adversity will help the Power's young pitchers deal with future roadblocks and challenges.

"It's easy for me to think that they have 1,000 innings under their belts, but they don't," said Curtis. "They're still young chicks out there and they're still investigating a new world and having things happen to them that they don't quite know how to deal with just yet.

"Instruction and understanding is important, and helping them deal with adversity is paramount in our approach to them.

"You want to help them shape their outlooks. You try to help them keep a good outlook on things. We're looking at the broad picture here, not just one game or even one week.

"They'll stumble, but that doesn't mean that they're not any good. They'll continue to have bad days throughout their careers and this experience will help them deal with that.

"It's a learning process that never stops."

Power pitcher Greg Kloosterman (3-14) took the loss Sunday, while Derek DeCarlo and Justin Barnes saw action out of the bullpen.

Kloosterman has moved within one of the franchise's Class A record (since 1987) for losses in a season. Phil Merrell went 5-15 for the 1998 Alley Cats.

The South Atlantic League record is 17, set by Charles Thompson of Charleston (S.C.) in 1990, and tied in 1997 by Hagerstown's Gary Glover.

Lakewood's Maximo De La Cruz (6-8) went six innings for the win.

The Power opens a three-game series tonight at Lexington, then returns to Charleston for an eight-game homestand beginning Thursday night. Hickory and Asheville visit for four-game series, separated by an off day next Monday.

Hendrickson with a much more "Ben-like" start today. He's really been pretty good lately, with a hiccup here and there. Here's hoping he has his problems ironed out and is ready to make the next step.

OMAHA ? The Nashville Sounds continued to dial long distance during their trip to Nebraska, belting three home runs on Monday afternoon to post a 7-1 victory over the Omaha Royals at Rosenblatt Stadium in the finale of a four-game series.

Dave Krynzel, Warren Morris, and Julio Mosquera all mashed roundtrippers in the Sounds? win, which gave the club a three-games-to-one series victory over their division rivals. Nashville slugged 11 homers in the four games against Omaha, equaling their most in one series all season.

With the victory, Nashville (58-45) improved to a season-high 13 games over .500 and temporarily increased its lead in the PCL American Conference Northern Division to a season-best 6 ½ games, pending the result of Memphis? game against Round Rock later in the day.

In addition, the Sounds improved the PCL?s best road record to 29-22 and upped their standing to 19-6 in afternoon contests this season.

Sounds starter Ben Hendrickson (5-7) continued his recent run of solid outings, earning his fifth victory of the season after limiting Omaha to one run on five hits while striking out four batters over seven innings of work. Nashville has been victorious in nine of the right-hander?s last 12 starts.

Although he didn?t add to his team-high homer total, first baseman Prince Fielder continued to swing a red-hot bat for the Sounds, pacing the club with a 3-for-5 afternoon at the plate. The Brewers? # 2 prospect is batting a blazing .383 (18-for-47) with 16 RBIs, including one on Monday, over his last 13 games.

Nashville jumped out to an early lead with five runs over the first two innings of play against Royals starter Ryan Jensen. Fielder and Tony Zuniga contributed RBI singles in the top of the first before Corey D. Hart ripped an RBI double in the second then scored on Morris? sixth home run of the year, a two-run shot to right off Jensen.

Neither team scored again until the sixth when the big flies continued for the Sounds. Mosquera led off the frame with his second tater of the series and third of the year, a solo shot to center off Omaha reliever Shawn Sonnier. Two outs later, Krynzel took the right-hander deep to left for his eighth longball of the year and a 7-0 Nashville lead.

Omaha broke up Hendrickson?s shutout bid in the bottom of the seventh. Matt Diaz opened the inning with a double to center then scored the Royals? first run three batters later on Paul Phillips? two-out RBI two-bagger, making it a 7-1 contest.

Jensen (1-4) took the loss for Omaha after allowing five runs (two earned) in his three innings of work in a spot start.

The Sounds travel back to Music City on Tuesday to begin an eight-game homestand against the Fresno Grizzlies (AAA-Giants) and Sacramento River Cats (AAA-A?s).

Nashville right-hander Wes Obermueller (0-0, 0.00), who picked up his first professional save on Thursday with 1 1/3 scoreless innings in his initial Sounds appearance, makes his first Triple-A start of the season when he toes the rubber in Tuesday?s 7:00 p.m. series opener against Fresno. The Grizzlies will counter with right-hander Matt Cain (6-5, 4.15).

Nashville Box Score:

Nelson Cruz two walks, Mitch Stetter a clean inning...

Baseball America's Daily Dish for Monday includes:

Quietly having an impressive year in the Florida State League is Brewers righty Carlos Villanueva. The 21-year-old Dominican struck out 10 over seven innings Friday night, allowing just one run on four hits in high Class A Brevard County?s 2-1 win over Daytona, upping his record to 6-1, 2.00 in 17 starts for the Manatees, with 109 strikeouts in 94 innings.

and

The Rookie-level Orem franchise played its first Sunday home game in five years yesterday and fans watched a memorable affair as the Owlz outlasted Helena 5-4 on Dallas Morris? 13th-inning home run. After playing on the campus of Brigham Young the past four years, where Sunday games are prohibited, Orem moved into its own park this season and was scheduled to play three additional Sunday home games. Helena shortstop Ryan Crew, Milwaukee?s 40th-round pick out of Texas-San Antonio this year, went 5-for-7 and is batting .388 (26-for-67) with eight doubles and 12 RBIs. Helena stranded 17 runners in the loss.

Final: Arizona Royals 7, Arizona Brewers 3

Weather: 102 degrees, sunny.

Wind: 1 mph, Varies.

T: 2:52

Arizona Box Score:

Royals stranded 15 -- it could have been worse; Lorenzo Cain 4-for-4, a HR short of the cycle -- it'd be nice to have another corner outfield prospect at the lower levels; if impressive bat Jose Jimenez can play a little SS, his stock rises a bit more; four team errors and a passed ball unacceptable; Lenny Leclercq, an 11th round pick who saw plenty of action at SS last season, hits a home run -- he's still seeing time at first base in limited action overall...

Every Manatee reached at least once; Tim Dillard not quite himself (three home runs allowed), but still manages six innings -- Tim had only allowed five home runs in 134.1 innings prior to tonight; rubber-armed lefty Jeremy Lewis, signed out of independent ball this year, continues to be an unsung value out of the Brevard pen (42 appearances, WHIP of 1.14)...

That's the first thing I thought of when seeing the Helena lineup tonight.

I was wondering what business Chapman had in the lineup. He's not even hitting .300! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/happy.gif

Is it wrong to like this Helena team as much as I do? I wish they had audio, would make it easier to follow. Though I still enjoy listening to the sounds when possible.
