The Arizona Brewers are 1-0 as their second-half season is underway, and our usually reliable cut-and-paste link for standings is missing the Florida State League today....

Interesting news on the 2006 Southern League schedule, including the schedule itself here:

www.minorleaguebaseball.c...;fext=.jsp

MARIETTA, GA -- The Southern League of Professional Baseball Clubs announced today that the league's Board of Directors have approved the 2006 Southern League schedule. The 2006 season will open with five games on Thursday, April 6 and will end on Monday, September 4.

Each Southern League club will play 140 games in the traditional split season format, with the first half concluding Sunday, June 18. The Southern League All-Star break will take place from July 9-11, with the All-Star Game scheduled for Monday, July 10 at Montgomery Riverwalk Stadium, home of the Biscuits.

One key change in next season's schedule is the switch from three- and four-game series between clubs to five-game series.

"I'm very happy with the new concept of our 2006 schedule and very curious to see how it works," said Southern League President Don Mincher. "The five-game series concept is a radical step for us but I see many advantages. It will cut our overall league travel by 25 percent, all homestands and road trips are either five or 10 games and there are no back-to-back series. The competitive value of the league is better balanced with each team playing each other between five and 15 games next season, as opposed to previous seasons when play was less balanced."

That's pretty awesome. Can anyone think of a reason this isn't a good idea?

Thanks for the link, Mass!

I can think of two, which are both debatable:

1: less variety for fans wanting to see different teams.

2: If two teams riding hot/cold streaks or dealing with injuries/promotions play each other, 3 5 game series's could decide the pennant in a way that 5 3 game series spread out over a longer time couldn't. For example, a home and home series would now be 10 games long. If one team is missing their best player due to injury and has had their top two starters called up to make spot starts and the other team is on a good streak, the split could easily be 9-1 or 8-2 which could be the margin at the end of the season.

I think those are the reasons why they don't do this in the majors.

Imo, I would have Braun skip BC and go to Huntsville... If that is where they want to start him next year, they might as well get him some AB's there this year... Heether is doing just fine at BC now that he is healthy...

Robbie Wooley is pitching in Helena tonight and I believe he may be pitching on three days rest. This seems surprising to me with the concern of overworking young arms. I am guessing his pitch count will be limited.

So, if Braun gets promoted, what becomes of Heether? Does Braun go to Brevard County and Heether to Huntsville (my preference)? Or, does Braun leapfrog Heether, and go to Huntsville...in that case does Heether repeat Brevard County after the year he is having? I know many don't feel that he is a real prospect, but in my opinion he is having a year that says he is. By all accounts he is good with the glove, and he can hit for power...and so far this year has hit for a surprising average...I like the guy. I don't think he should block Braun, obviously, but I would like to see what if he can keep hitting at higher levels.

In progress: Fresno (Giants) 9, Nashville 1, after eight innings

As noted earlier, Nashville's pitching staff has been ravaged by injury and promotions. Ben Hendrickson was shelled on three days' rest tonight, and uber-handyman Chris Barnwell came on to begin the 6th inning. Amazingly, he's fired two scoreless innings thus far. In between Hendrickson and Barnwell, RHP Brett Evert was ineffective. He was promoted to Nashville from Huntsville today...

I think heether should be moved up immediately...then next year, start heether at AA and Braun at A+...hopefully you can move them both up about the all-star break...man...braun is killing the ball...you gotta wonder if the brass is thinking about moving him up again

West Virginia Site Game Summary:

Power Win On Braun's Walk-Off Homer

Charleston, WV ? Ryan Braun extended his hitting streak to 12 games with a two-out single in his first at-bat of Friday night?s game against the Hickory Crawdads at Appalachian Power Park, but his last at-bat was the story of the game, as he hit a walk-off two-run homer and the Power beat the Crawdads 6-4.

The Crawdads took an early lead scoring three times in the top of the fourth inning. Mike Carlin knocked in the first two runs on a single and Mike Cockrell drove in the final run of the inning with a sacrifice fly. It was a 3-0 game until Braun hit a two-out RBI triple to put the Power on the board in the bottom of the sixth.

The Crawdads answered back in the top of the seventh inning on Dan Schwartzbauer?s solo shot to take a 4-1 lead. The Power tied the game at 4-4 in the bottom of the seventh inning on RBI singles from Josh Brady, Alcides Escobar and Hernan Iribarren.

Dustin Craig retired the first two batters in the bottom of the ninth inning before walking Iribarren. Braun hit the first pitch he saw during the very next at-bat over the wall in left center field, his fourth home run of the year, which was the third walk-off home run of the year for the Power.

Dave Johnson (4-2) earned the victory, and Dustin Craig (4-5) obtained the loss. The Power are 17-17 in the second half after the win and the Crawdads move to 21-13 with the loss.

The Power will continue the four game series against Hickory at Appalachian Power Park on Saturday night. The Power will throw RHP Eric Thomas (0-0, 3.12) and the Crawdads will counter with RHP Romulo Sanchez (2-0, 1.20). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM (6:05 Central).

West Virginia Box Score:

Ryan Braun a double shy of the cycle; just the fact that Mark Rogers toughed it out through seven is huge; this lineup will look much, much different Saturday, that's for sure...

Final: Tampa (Yankees) 8, Brevard County 3

Brevard County Box Score:

LHP Steve Hammond roughed up a bit in his high-A debut in relief; Drew Anderson extends what we believe to be a 21-game hit streak now; Adam Heether's three-run HR the totality of the offensive production...

I really feel bad for Hendrickson. Three days rest has to be tough on his arm. Proof of that would be the 8 runs in 4.1IP. I think instead of doing that to him, they should have simply piggy-backed some relievers to pitch the whole game. Where is Phelps? He was a starter.

edit: nm, I see he(Phelps) is Day-to-Day right now. We should just pick up some scrap heap to pitch for the Sounds right now.

Maybe they are training Rogers to be a bit more of a man and not a teenager. He seemed to cruise for 3 innings then explode in the 4th or 5th, then run away and hide in the dugout.

Last game then moved him from the mound to the outfield whilst the left fielder finished his mess. And they made Mark pitch more! And he did ok.

Today he did exaclty the same... crusied for 3, exploded, maybe he thought he can run away from his mess, but they left him in.... and he did ok again.

Maybe there is hope for him.
