Jim Powell doesn't believe in the jinx by mention, so neither will we -- Gary Glover with a no-hitter through five innings, and the West Virginia duo of Eric Thomas (four innings) and Derek DeCarlo (one inning) are doing the same.

Tim Dillard, tonight's Manatee TBD, has a two-hit shutout through four.

In other words, a stellar night on the mound thus far....

Fermaint 2/4 with a HR and 3 RBI in his A debut.

Braun 2/4 with a HR.

Katin 2/3.

Salome 2/4 with a HR.

Wow. Remember back in May when we were concerned about the lack of prospects (specifically position prospects) below AAA?

Of course, both no-hitters (Nashville and West Virginia) were broken up in the sixth innings of their respective games, and in fact, Glover took the loss as a result of his poor sixth, so don't blame me, Gary, it was Powell's fault...

Final: West Virginia 7, Hickory (Pirates) 3

If you had traded Adam Mannon, Freddy Parejo and Clay Blevins for Brendan Katin, Charlie Fermaint and Angel Salome in fantasy baseball, you'd be G.M. of the year -- there's no truth to the rumor the Power's going undefeated the rest of the season, but it might be close...

West Virginia Site Game Summary:

POWER OFFENSE ERUPTS IN THE SEVENTH

Charleston, WV ? The West Virginia Power offense scored five runs on eight hits in the bottom of the seventh inning of Saturday night?s game to beat the Hickory Crawdads 7-3.

Angel Salome, one of three Power newcomers, hit a solo shot in the bottom of the second inning to start the scoring for the Power. Later in the inning Hasan Rasheed knocked in Brendan Katin with a two-out single to give the Power a 2-0 lead. Neil Walker cut the lead in half for Hickory on a solo shot and made it a 2-1 game.

The Power sent eleven batters to the plate in the bottom of the seventh inning and scored five runs on eight hits, including two home runs to open up a six-run lead. Charlie Fermaint hit a three-run homer and Ryan Braun hit a two-run blast later in the inning to give the Power a 7-1 lead. In the top of eighth inning Hyung Cho knocked in Mike Cockrell on an RBI single to bring the Crawdads closer. In the top of the ninth inning Cho knocked another run in on an RBI groundout but it was too little, and too late for Hickory.

Derek DeCarlo (6-3) earned the victory, and Romulo Sanchez (2-1) obtained the loss. The Power are 18-17 in the second half after the win and the Crawdads move to 21-14 with the loss.

The Power will conclude the four game series against Hickory at Appalachian Power Park on Sunday afternoon. The Power will throw RHP Josh Wahpepah (5-5, 3.63) and the Crawdads will counter with RHP Derek Hankins (5-5, 4.15). The first pitch is scheduled for 2:05 PM (1:05 Central).

West Virginia Box Score:

Man, that lineup looks sweet; RHP Eric Thomas' 2005 comeback story continues -- nice!

Final: Sacramento (A's) 5, Nashville 3

Nashville Site Game Summary:

Sounds Fall For Fourth Straight Game, 5-3

NASHVILLE ? The Nashville Sounds held the Sacramento River Cats hitless for eight innings on Saturday evening at Greer Stadium.

Unfortunately for the season-high 12,344 fans in attendance, Sacramento registered five runs on five hits in its lone inning of productivity to post a 5-3 win over the Sounds in the opener of a four-game series.

With their fourth straight loss, the Sounds (59-49) had their lead over Memphis in the PCL American Conference Northern Division reduced to five games.

Nashville came up on the short end of a series opener for the first time in its last 11 series and fell to 3-12 on the year when playing on Saturdays.

Tony Zuniga put the Sounds on the board in the bottom of the second inning with a two-out solo homer to left off Sacramento spot starter Mike Saipe.

Nashville doubled the lead to 2-0 in the third when Dave Krynzel tripled and scored on a Warren Morris sacrifice fly.

Sounds starter Gary Glover retired the first 13 batters in order prior to a fifth-inning walk to Brant Colamarino and held the first 15 River Cats hitless before the Sacramento offense came alive in the top of the sixth.

Charles Thomas opened the sixth with a single, moved to third on a John Baker double, then scored on Freddie Bynum?s RBI single up the middle. Jermaine Clark followed with an RBI groundout that plated Baker to tie the game at 2-2. Matt Watson put the River Cats on top, 3-2, with an RBI single to right-center. Bobby Smith continued the fireworks in the frame with a one-out, two-run homer to right-center off Glover, his 13th tater of the year, which improved the Sacramento lead to 5-2.

Nashville rallied for a run in the ninth against River Cats closer Jairo Garcia. Nelson Cruz ripped a one-out double to right-center then scored one batter later on Zuniga?s RBI single down the right field line to bring the score to its final 5-3.

River Cats reliever Victor Moreno (2-2) picked up the victory with 2 1/3 scoreless innings behind Saipe. Glover (3-2) took the loss after allowing a season-high five runs over 5 2/3 frames while pitching on only two days? rest. Garcia earned his team-leading 12th save.

The teams continue the series with a 6 p.m. meeting on Sunday evening at Greer Stadium. Right-hander Wes Obermueller (0-0, 2.57) will make the start for the Sounds and face Sacramento right-hander Juan Cruz (3-0, 1.54).

RHP Jeff Bennett healthy enough to pitch, and activated from the disabled list for this one...

Final: Brevard County 3, Tampa (Yankees) 0

Brevard County Box Score:

RHP Tim Dillard does what Tim Dillard does -- Mr. Consistent, as in consistently efficient and very effective; the 'Tees have the one roster that's been stable this week, still battling at the top of a tough division...

I think it is a little early to annoint some of these players. I'm excited as well that they got out to such a good start but it is only one game. I'm sorry...I apologize...it's just I've been a Brewer fan for a long time...it's only natural for me to be negative. I hope they can all keep it up. Good to see Salome's defense didn't keep him down.

While I agree it's a bit early to punch a major league ticket for any of these players, the truly amazing things for this farm system are that the following things are all occuring,

1) relative success in the W-L record (at least in 2nd half)

2) good statistical results for many individual players

3) many of the top players on the teams are not only the younger players on the team, but generally on par or younger for their league.

Final: Huntsville 7, Montgomery (Devil Rays) 1

Huntsville Box Score:

Ben Van Iderstine 3-for-3 with a sacrifice; Tony Gwynn on base four times, Vinny Rottino three; 86 of Gwynn's 103 base hits have been singles; just don't know what it's going to take to get Dennis Sarfate to AAA...

I know alot of you will think I am crazy, but I would like to keep moving Braun up until he struggles... He could share time with Heether at 3rd and DH some at BC for the next few weeks... Then, if he keeps hacking away, move him up to Huntsville to finish out the year...

Heck, if he impresses at Huntsville, we can move him up to Nashville for their AAA championship run!!!!

I say let the kid keep moving up...
