July Transactions, Latest: Reliever Acquired From Rockies

Parra...that's not good. I've had this concern too many times before. I'd like to say there's always next year, but far too often, when the word shoulder + injury takes over, so does one's career.

I wish Manny the best. I've seen him pitch, albeit in Beloit, but he resembled a MLB pitcher better than any other minor leaguer I've ever seen. Get well soon, and for good, Manny.

Who do we have looking at this kid? He's been having the same trouble for 2 years. It shouldnt take that long to decide if he needs surgery or not. Colby is right Manny has big league stuff and when healty isnt very far away but the doctors needed to take the kid gloves off a while back. Its an injustice to Manny.

Well I wouldnt say that. If they felt like they had to protect Mike Jones they certainly have to protect Parra. Im sure someone would scoop him up and let him sit on the DL all year. He's still young enough and has more then enough upside.

Nashville Press Release on the Rick Helling purchase:

Nashville Sounds right-hander Rick Helling had his contract purchased by the Milwaukee Brewers this morning and will be in uniform for the club for tonight's game against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Miller Park.

The 34-year-old Helling, who went 9-3 with a 4.13 ERA (60er / 130.2ip) in 21 starts for Nashville, joins the fifth different major league team of his 14-year professional career and will wear # 30 for the Brewers.

Helling leaves the Sounds tied for the Pacific Coast League lead with nine victories. In addition, he leads Nashville and ranks among the top five PCL hurlers in strikeouts (3rd-105) and innings pitched (2nd-130.2).

The veteran accumulated a team-best ten quality starts for the Sounds, all coming in his final 15 outings (8-2, 3.36 ERA, 35er / 93.2ip).

To make room on the 25-man and 40-man rosters for Helling, Milwaukee designated veteran reliever Ricky Bottalico for assignment. The right-hander went 2-2 with two saves and a 4.54 ERA (21er / 41.2ip) in 40 relief outings for the Brewers this season, his first with the club.

I'm not certain, but isn't there a rule that says you can't pick someone up in Rule V, and then stash him on the DL?

Jones may have been added to the 40-man before he was last injured, so that was probably a different situation.

That sounds right, because there's been sporadic talk about taking him off via the 60-day DL, but then he'd earn service time (if I'm not mistaken).

W.Va. Power notebook: 6th-rounder passes through

By Tommy R. Atkinson

Charleston Gazette Staff writer

When the West Virginia Power returns for an eight-game homestand tonight, there will be a new face in the crowd.

West Virginia manager Ramon Aviles said left-handed pitcher Steve Hammond will be promoted today to Brevard County of the high Class A Florida State League. The Milwaukee Brewers? sixth-round pick in this June?s amateur draft posted a 3-0 record with a 2.45 ERA in four West Virginia games, including one start.

In Hammond?s only start, Monday?s 9-2 win against the Lexington (Ky.) Legends, he allowed just two earned runs on five hits in six innings with four strikeouts and a walk. Hammond, who seems to be on a fast track, began the year at Helena (Mont.) of the rookie Pioneer League before getting called up to the Power in July.

Derek Miller, a draft-and-follow signee from the 2004 draft, will be moving up from Helena to take Hammond?s spot. The 6-foot, 195-pound southpaw owns a 1-0 record with a 2.67 ERA and a save in eight games, including five starts. The 23-year-old has struck out 31 in 30 1/3 innings against four walks and opponents are hitting just .228 against him.

The changes won?t stop there, according to Aviles.

?There?s going to be some changes in the next few days,?? said the manager. ?We?re going to get some players that?s going to help our offense.??

I love to see the Brewers continue to add a couple of sleeper southpaws to the system in Hammond and Miller. Both of those guys are advanced college arms that can be moved quickly, so I wouldn't be surprised to see advanced placements to open spring training next year (not to get ahead of myself http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif ).

Fermaint has got to be bumped up. Katin makes a lot of sense as well. I would be in no hurry to move Salome given his defense. With Helena about to wrap up the first-half title, I would bet the Brewers wait until that is secure.

: Money confirmed that Double-A starter Manny Parra's season is over. The left-hander, who has experienced ongoing shoulder soreness, was sent to Arizona and doctors are trying to determine the source of soreness. Parra was 5-6 with a 3.96 ERA and 86 strikeouts in 91 innings pitched.

how does the song go?

...and another one gone, and another one gone..another one bites the dust......ah!

The clearing you see ahead is the top 10 in the "power 50"

I'd guess that with Hardy, DLR, Weeks and Parra all falling off it's wide open.

Time for Yovanni and Rogers to start their accent into the top 10 and to, of course, inevitably suffer some sort of shoulder injury....

4 more guys moving up to West Viriginia, according to the transactions. Any details? Who gets moved from West Virginia? My guess is Mannon and a catcher get bumped down. And a couple pitchers get bumped up at each level.

Edit: And Lewis hasn't played in a while. Is he hurt?

We're going to have to wait one more day for confirmations of all the Helena - West Virginia maneuverings.

Not sure how the West Virginia newspaper accounts of LHP Derek Miller's arrival from Helena were incorrect, but we'll back out that transaction for now.

We can confirm that 2005 12th round first baseman John Alonso is in Arizona from Helena, where he'll be able to see more regular playing time, and young 2004 draft-and-follow RHP Matt Kretzschmar, has been promoted from Arizona to the H-Crew.

RHP Brett Evert, picked up early this season when he was released from Seattle's triple-A club, made his Nashville debut Friday night after seven relief appearances with Brevard County and 16 bullpen stints with Huntsville.

Huntsville Times:

RHP Brett Evert's spot will be filled by 6'3", 200 lb., 25-year-old right-hander Gerrit Simpson, 3-0, who had a 3.83 ERA in 37 appearances at Tulsa, the Rockies' Double-A club.

Tulsa Drillers Site:

The Drillers announced another roster move before the game. Tulsa native Gerrit Simpson was traded to the Milwaukee Brewers system. The Tulsa native will report to Double A Hunstville in the Southern League. In his second season with the Drillers, Simpson was 3-0 this year with a 3.83 ERA in 27 games. He was a 2001 5th round pick of the Rockies out of the University of Texas.

No word on what the trade involved. We'll work on finding out for you.

Overall Simpson's stats are fairly pedestrian, and he's in his second season of working in middle relief / setup. But you make this move when you're simply short on bodies for various reasons at this time...

Helena Independent Record:

The Helena Brewers won the first-half championship of the Pioneer League's Northern Division Thursday night and quickly saw several top players move on.

Five Brewers were sent up to Class A West Virginia of the South Atlantic League including catcher Angel Salome and outfielders Charlie Fermaint and Brendan Katin.

The three were among the top five Pioneer League batters in batting average. Fermaint led the league in home runs with 12. Salome's 50 RBI's also led the league.

Also being moved up to the Charleston club are LHP Derek Miller and RHP Kevin Roberts. Both had an ERA around 2.75.

Helena has two additions to their roster, catcher Clay Blevins and outfielder Freddy Parejo. Both played at West Virginia with Blevins hitting .200 in 120 at bats. Parejo was hitting .231 for West Virginia. Blevins played in Helena last year, where he hit .243 for the Brewers.

Mass Haas:

We'll try to learn more about other moves with West Virginia, such as disabled list placements (Will Lewis?) that may have freed up roster spots. We have reason to believe that RHP Brian Montalbo, a 7th round pick in 2003 out of the state of Alaska, has left the Power of his own choosing. He may be on a restricted list at this time.

The deal for RHP Gerrit Simpson from the Rockies (to Huntsville) is for a PTBNL (if the Rockies need one), otherwise cash later on, certainly no grand sum of money.

Definitely sounds like a deal where the Brewers were in a bind, put the word out for an available arm capable of pitching at AA, with the implied word that a similar player could be moved if the Rockies develop an organizational soldier need of their own.
