Slumping Sounds leave town

By Nate Rau, nrau@nashvillecitypaper.com

The Nashville Sounds capped off a forgettable homestand with a 5-1 loss to Sacramento in front of 3,844 fans at Greer Stadium Tuesday.

Nashville (60-51) went 2-6 during the stand, dropping three of four to the River Cats.

Sounds manager Frank Kremblas spread the blame between the pitching staff giving up too many home runs ? 13 during the stand ? and the lack of plate patience from his lineup.

?I hate it when we don?t play well,? Kremblas said. ?[Allowing so many home runs] is horrible, absolutely horrible.?

Fortunately for the Sounds, second-place Memphis is struggling as well, so Nashville?s lead remains six games in the PCL American North Division.

?You?re going to hit some skids throughout the season,? Sounds outfielder Corey Hart said. ?It?s nice when we hit ours, they hit theirs.?

The team gets a much-needed day off today ? its first in nearly three weeks ? before heading to Colorado Springs.

?The way things have been going the last few series, it?s definitely nice to get a break and regroup things and come back strong,? Hart said.

Sacramento got on the board first, when left fielder Shawn Garret guided a ball down the right field line and inside the foul pole for a home run in the second inning.

The Nashville offense flirted with putting some runs on the board early on, but stranded runners in scoring position in the third, fourth and fifth innings. As a whole, Sacramento starter Seth Etherton held the Sounds lineup in check. Etherton forced the Sounds into 13 fly ball outs.

?He was using both sides of the plate and making some pitches,? Hart said. ?We had some situations where we could have scored some runs, we just didn?t get it done.?

Sacramento added a pair of runs in the sixth inning when Nashville starter Jeff Housman seemed to wear down. First baseman Brant Colamarino smacked a double and Andrew Beattie followed with a two-run homer. That extended the River Cats? lead to 3-0. Housman went six innings, allowing three earned runs, while fanning three.

Nashville got its only run in the bottom of the inning. That?s when Hart obliterated an Etherton offering over the left field wall and out of Greer Stadium.

?That was one of the better ones I?ve hit,? Hart said. ?It was one of those you don?t really feel off the bat.?

After the game, Kremblas said he was tempted to implement a rule he?s used in the past ? swing at a bad pitch and get taken out of the game. He?s done so in the past to players like Hart and Prince Fielder.

?I hate it when we swing at bad pitches and we did that consistently,? Kremblas said. ?I?m tired of saying it.?

Brevard County Site Game Summary:

Villanueva Impressive In Manatees Win

Eure 3-for-5 With 3 Ribbies

Manatees starter Carlos Villanueva pitched seven strong innings in Tuesday night's 6-3 victory over the Sarasota Reds. He was dominant in striking out seven and walking only one. Villanueva's only mistake on the night was a pitch that Reds' outfielder Jason Vavao deposited over the left field wall for a two-run homer. Villanueva improved his record to 7-1. His ERA now stands at 2.16.

The Manatees offense got things going in the fourth after a Lou Palmisano RBI double to score Adam Heether, and a Eure RBI single to score Palmisano. The Manatees would add a run in both the fifth and sixth innings before striking again in the seventh for two more. It was Eure again who did the damage with a two-out RBI single to plate Steve Moss and Drew Anderson. Eure finished the night going 3-5 with three RBI's, raising his team leading RBI total to 52.

With Vero Beach's win on Tuesday, the Manatees remain three games back in the race for the East Division. The Manatees look to make it two in a row Wednesday against the Reds in Sarasota.

Now if we could only get one of those from our #1 pick from '04.

You just won't let that die, will you? Rogers is 18 years old, and played high school ball in Maine! Don't you think there may be a bit of an adjustment period. He's proven he has unbelievable stuff. Just let him harness it for a few years. It's not like we need him in Milwaukee right now.
