Charleston attendance mark will fall tonight

Jack Bogaczyk

Charleston Daily Mail Sports Editor

Never mind where the West Virginia Power is in the South Atlantic League second-half Northern Division standings.

Considering the Power's recent personnel moves, the Milwaukee Brewers' low Class A farm club belongs on the TV show "Extreme Makeovers."

Maybe it's because the Brewers were embarrassed by a 5-22 start in the season's first 30 days, as they began a new affiliation in a new ballpark. The Brewers understand, with only a two-year Player Development Contract with West Virginia Baseball LLC, time's a wastin' on proving they want to stay in such nice digs after 2006.

Maybe it's because some of the youth among their personnel from recent drafts has started to mature. Eleven of the 25 players on the active Power roster were picked in the first 10 rounds of drafts. Thirteen were chosen somewhere in the last two drafts.

About half of the roster has turned over since Opening Day, too. The Power already has used 42 Baby Brewers this season.

Anyway, as Asheville makes its first trip to Appalachian Power Park to begin a four-game series tonight, the Power is coming off an off day and its first winning month -- 16-13 in July.

There's something else, but it was inevitable since the 4,474-seat Appalachian Power Park opened on April 14 with an 8-3 win over Hagerstown before 5,354 fans, after an 0-6 start.

With a crowd of at least 1,490 tonight, the Power will break Charleston's all-time professional baseball attendance record. The club's smallest home crowd this season was 1,681, on June 8.

For an 11-inning win on newcomer Angel Salome's walk-off homer Sunday afternoon, West Virginia topped the attendance (183,352) for the Senators' first season in Watt Powell Park, 1949.

The Power attendance, through 51 dates, is 183,900, a game average of 3,605. The club record was 185,389, set at Watt Powell Park in 1991 by the Wheelers, who also finished with a Charleston best-in-history, regular-season record of 92-50.

The Power (19-17 second half) has 17 scheduled home dates remaining. If the average remains where it is, the previous fan standard will be obliterated by a Power Park debut year of 245,000-plus.

Manager Ramon Aviles' club has gotten a power surge -- no pun intended -- in recent weeks, with the additions of third baseman Ryan Braun, Milwaukee's top pick in the June draft, and Salome, a catcher who was a fifth-round pick last summer.

In the 22 games since former Miami (Fla.) star Braun moved up after a short stint at short-season Helena (Pioneer League), the Power has won 14 of 22. He's a major reason the Power doubled its June homer output of 10 in July.

When Aviles said last week that the Power is hitting better with runners in scoring position, well, that starts with Braun, whose defense at third has been a head-turner, too. Braun not only has a 14-game hitting streak and is batting .326 with five homers and 16 RBI. He's batting .429 with runners in scoring position and two outs, and .538 (7-for-13) with runners aboard and two outs.

The Power pitching staff improved measurably in July, too, primarily in middle relief. The club earned run average last month was 3.59, more than one run per game better than it was over the first two months.

Where does the Power go from here?

Well, if Brevard County, the Brewers' high class A Florida State League club, is in contention for a second-half title, Braun and some of the other Power talent could head there for the stretch drive.

If West Virginia can climb into the Northern Division race from the current 6 1/2 games behind Delmarva, the top Milwaukee prospects who have improved things at Power Park in recent weeks might stay through the Labor Day end of the season.

Pioneer League Offensive Player of the Week:

Charlie Fermaint, Helena

5 G, 19 AB, 8 R, 9 H, 3 2B, 0 3B, 4 HR, 6 RBI, .474 AVG, 1.263 SLG, 3 SB

Charlie Fermaint might have been the Offensive Player of the Week in two different leagues last week if he'd gotten another game or two in the Sally League after his promotion. The 19-year-old Puerto Rican hit home runs in four of five games for Helena before being sent to West Virginia, where he went 5-for-10 with a double, a homer and six RBIs in his first two games. The 2003 fourth-round pick of the Milwaukee Brewers left the Pioneer League as the circuit's top home run hitter (12) and also ranked first in slugging percentage (.744) and runs (46), third in RBIs (32) and extra-base hits (23), fourth in stolen bases (11) and sixth in average (.364).

Carlos Villanueva picks up his 7th W of the season tonight. Just another solid outing going 7 innings, 6 hits, 2 er, and 7 K's to his 1 BB. I think it's time he joins Tauby at Huntsville.

Speaking of Tauby, he pitched a great game tonight vs. Nomar and the West Tenn Diamond Jaxx. He went 7 IP, 5 hits, 1 ER, and 2 k's. He's in line for the win as long as Huntsville can hold on. Vinny Rottino with a 3 hit game.

Final: West Virginia 6, Asheville (Rockies) 5, 13 innings

Walk-off single, Josh Brady!

West Virginia Site Game Summary:

POWER SET ATTENDANCE RECORD AND WIN IN FINAL AT BAT

Charleston, WV ? On Tuesday night, the West Virginia Power won their fourth game in a row, marking the third time during the four-game winning streak that they won in their final at-bat as they beat the Asheville Tourists 6-5 in the bottom of the 13th inning at Appalachian Power Park.

Carlos Corporan hit a two-run homer, his sixth of the year, in the bottom of the second inning to give the Power a 2-0 lead. Alcides Escobar delivered a two-run double in the bottom of the third inning and put the Power up 4-0.

In the top of the fourth inning Dustin Hahn hit a solo shot and Chris Nelson smacked a two-run double to make it a 4-3 game. Joe Koshansky tied the game in the top of the fifth inning with a solo shot, his 30th homerun of the season.

The game remained tied at 4-4 until Ryan Braun drove in Escobar with a single in the bottom of the fifth inning. In the top of the sixth, the Tourists tied the game at 5-5 on Nelson?s RBI single. The game ended in the bottom of the 13th inning when Josh Brady drove in Grant Richardson with the game-winning single.

Robert Hinton (3-3) earned the victory, and Jason DiAngelo (3-3) obtained the loss. The Power are 20-17 in the second half after the win and the Tourists move to 16-22 with the loss.

On Tuesday night the Power also broke the all time professional baseball attendance record in Charleston with a crowd of 2,830, moving the season total to 186,730, which breaks the previous record in a season held by the Wheelers in 1991 when they drew 185,389 fans.

The Power will continue the four game series against Asheville at Appalachian Power Park on Wednesday night. The Power will throw LHP Greg Kloosterman (3-15, 4.67) and the Tourists will counter with RHP Ching-Lung Lo (4-7, 5.82). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM (6:05 Central).

West Virginia Box Score:

Power pitchers only allow seven hits in 13 innings (six walks, one HBP); LHP Derek Miller stellar in his Power debut; co-closers Ben Stanczyk and Robert Hinton even better -- they've been so solid all season; the reinforcements struggled a bit offensively, so the long-timers picked up the slack...

Final: Huntsville 4, West Tenn (Cubs) 3

Beating RHP Ricky Nolasco no small feat...

Huntsville Site Game Summary:

Zumwalt Says "No" to Nomar in Ninth

Ty Taubenheim worked a strong seven innings and was supported by a three-run fifth inning rally in Huntsville?s 4-3 win over West Tenn Tuesday night in the opening game of a three-game set at Pringles Park. The Stars won their fourth in a row to improve to 18-19 in the second half, while the Diamond Jaxx fell to 22-15 in the half and a game behind Carolina for the top spot in the North Division after the Mudcats victory over Chattanooga.

Jerome Gamble worked a scoreless eighth inning behind Taubenheim but gave up a leadoff home run to Luis Montanez in the ninth that trimmed the Stars lead to 4-3. Ryan Theriot singled, moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Jose Reyes and stayed there when Adam Greenberg walked. Stars manager Don Money replaced Gamble with Alec Zumwalt, who had given up nine runs, seven earned, over his last two outings. The right-hander retired pinch-hitter Aaron Sisk on a foul ball to catcher John Vanden Berg and struck out Nomar Garciaparra for the final out of the game. Zumwalt earned his second save of the season and his first since Montgomery on May 14. Garciappara went hitless in four official at-bats and was hit by Taubenheim in the third inning in his third game on a rehab assignment with West Tenn.

Tony Gwynn, Jr. led off the fifth inning with a double and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Callix Crabbe, his second of the night. Brandon Gemoll then hit a ground ball that was fielded by first baseman Brandon Sing but his one-hop throw to the plate was off-line and could not be handled by Reyes, the catcher, allowing Gwynn to score to tie the game at two. Brad Nelson moved Gemoll to second base with a ground ball out before Vinny Rottino doubled to plate Gemoll with the go-ahead run. Enrique Cruz followed with a double to chase home Rottino to push the visitors lead to 4-2. The Stars had managed just one run on six hits over 14 innings against West Tenn starter Ricky Nolasco the first two times they faced him prior to Tuesday night.

The Stars loaded the bases with two outs in the eighth on walks to Ben Van Iderstine and Vanden Berg and a pinch-hit single by Guilder Rodriguez before Victor Ramos replaced Federico Baez and fanned Gwynn for the final out of the frame. Crabbe opened the ninth with a single, stole second, advanced to third on a Gemoll ground out and was thrown out trying to score after Buck Coats caught Nelson?s fly ball in shallow centerfield. The Stars hit into four double plays for a third time season, yet have won two of those three games.

Taubenheim gave up two runs, on sacrifice flies by Casey McGehee in the first and third innings, on five hits over his seven frames. He struck out four and walked one and earned his first double-A victory. Nolasco suffered his second loss of the season after yielding four runs on nine hits over seven innings.

The series continues Wednesday afternoon with Stars left-hander Josh Habel taking the mound against West Tenn right-hander Carlos Marmol. Coverage of the game gets underway at 11:50 a.m. central time on ESPN 1450 AM and through the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com.

Final: Sacramento (A's) 5, Nashville 1

Nashville Site Game Summary:

Good use of the term "man the bump" -- haven't seen that one in years...

NASHVILLE ? The Sacramento River Cats continued their dominance over the Nashville Sounds on Tuesday evening at Greer Stadium, scoring a 5-1 win in front of 3,844 fans in the finale of a four-game series and eight-game homestand.

Sacramento secured a three-games-to-one series victory and notched its 25th win in the last 30 contests against the Sounds. Nashville wrapped up its homestand with only two wins in eight tilts.

Despite the loss, Nashville (60-51) maintained its six-game lead over Memphis in the PCL American Conference Northern Division, due to the Redbirds? loss to Fresno.

Sacramento left fielder Shawn Garrett gave the visitors a 1-0 lead in the top of the second when he belted a one-out solo homer off Nashville starter Jeff Housman that barely hugged the right field foul pole for the outfielder?s 14th tater of the year.

River Cats second baseman Andrew Beattie upped the advantage to 3-0 in the sixth with a two-out shot to right off Housman, his seventh roundtripper of the campaign.

All-Star Corey Hart put Nashville on the board when he led off the bottom of the sixth with a rocket to left off Sacramento starter Seth Etherton. The bomb, Hart?s 14th of the year, made the score 3-1.

Audio Link, Corey Hart's HR:

Sacramento responded quickly, adding a pair of runs against reliever Mitch Stetter in the top of the seventh to pull away, 5-1. Tom Gregorio opened the frame with a walk then moved to second on Freddie Bynum?s bunt single. Both runners moved up on a Stetter wild pitch then Gregorio scored on a passed ball charged to catcher Julio Mosquera. Matt Watson added a sacrifice fly to plate Bynum with the second run in the frame.

Etherton (7-5) earned his first victory in four starts after holding the Sounds to one run on six hits in six innings. Housman (4-10) dropped his third consecutive start after allowing three runs, all on homers, in his six frames, marking just his third quality start of the season.

The Sounds join the rest of the Pacific Coast League for an off day on Wednesday before embarking on their longest road trip of the season, a 12-game trek to Colorado Springs, Salt Lake, and Memphis.

Nashville opens the trip with an 8:05 p.m. CT opener of a four-game series on Thursday evening against the Colorado Springs Sky Sox (AAA-Rockies). Right-hander Gary Glover (3-2, 2.75) mans the bump for the Sounds to face Sky Sox right-hander Christian Parker (1-2, 7.55).

Brady's double lifts Power in 13th

By Jay Srinivasan

For the Charleston Gazette

The West Virginia Power likes to take drama to the extreme.

After muffing several opportunities to win in the ninth inning, the Power finally closed it out in the 13th inning to register a 6-5 victory over the Asheville Tourists in front of 2,840 fans at Appalachian Power Park Tuesday night.

The turnout took the season attendance number to 186,740, breaking Charleston?s all-time professional baseball record. The previous mark was 185,389 set at Watt Powell Park in 1991 by the Wheelers.

?I think its exciting for the team, for the ownership, and for the city of Charleston to draw this type of attendance,? said Power general manager Andy Milovich.

?Obviously the stadium is the number-one reason. The staff has worked real hard in terms of generating some excitement and some promotions and fun activities.?

Tied at 5 in the bottom of the 13th, Grant Richardson reached on shortstop Chris Nelson?s error and advanced to second on Carlos Corporan?s single to left. Pinch-hitter Josh Brady then walloped an RBI double to score Richardson.

?I was trying to do a little too much in my previous at bat,? said Brady. ?The next time, I calmed myself down a little bit and just tried to stay inside.?

In the bottom of the ninth, the Power had a great opportunity to close the game. After Charlie Fermaint reached on a fielder?s choice, Nelson made two consecutive errors to load the bases. But Ryan Braun and Angel Salome struck out.

Despite the win, Power manager Ramon Aviles felt the match should have been finished earlier.

?They really handed it to us in the ninth inning and we didn?t take advantage of it,? said Aviles.

?We swung at bad pitches two hitters in a row. We finally got a big hit from Brady.?

Robert Hinton (3-3) got the win after pitching allowing no hits and striking out three in the last two innings. For the Tourists, Jason DiAngelo (3-3) took the loss after giving up two hits and one earned run in 1 1/3 innings.

The Power jumped to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second on Corporan?s two-run homer to right. A two-run double by Alcides Escobar extended the West Virginia lead to 4-0. The Tourists then rallied in the top of the fourth, scoring three runs on a Dustin Hann homer and Jeff Dragicevich?s double.

After West Virginia went ahead 5-4 in the bottom of the fifth, Asheville fought back in the sixth on a Justin Nelson RBI double to even the score.

Helena Independent Record:

Defense leads Brewers over White Sox in extra innings

The Helena Brewers remained unbeaten in the second half of the Pioneer League season on Tuesday, downing the Great Falls White Sox 3-2 in 11 innings.

Pinch runner Scott McKnight scored the winning run from third base when Great Falls shortstop Javier Castillo made an errant throw to first base trying to complete a double play that would have been the third out of the 11th inning.

The Brewers improved to 3-0 in second-half play. Helena won the first seven games of the year and led wire-to-wire in winning the first half race in the Pioneer League North Division.

Pitching and defense was the story on Tuesday.

Three Helena pitchers combined on a six-hitter with Joe Thatcher getting the win after working a scoreless 10th and 11th innings.

Ryan Marion started the game for the Brewers and went five innings with five strikeouts and a walk. His only mistake was a two-run home run to Manny Rodriguez in the fourth inning that tied the game at 2-2.

Will Inman relieved Marion and gave up just one hit in four innings of work. It was his first outing since picking up the win to seal the first-half title on Thursday.

Helena's defense was also stellar, going 11 innings without an error.

Great Falls also got a strong performance from its pitchers.

Four White Sox scattered 11 hits and did not give up an earned run, but their defense faltered with four errors in the game.

One of those errors extended the third inning and Kenny Holmberg made the White Sox pay.

The second baseman hit a double to left field that scored Michael Bell and Freddy Parejo to put the Brewers ahead 2-0.

The teams went scoreless after Rodriguez's home run tied the score in the fourth before McKnight's run in extra innings.

Helena can complete the three-game sweep today when the two teams face off in Great Falls.

The Brewers host Billings (3-0) Thursday and Friday at Kindrick Legion Field.
