Stars ace Sarfate sidelined by elbow

DENVER -- The Brewers' Double-A affiliate started the season with a trio of aces. At least for the next few days, it's down to none.

Right-handed pitching prospect Dennis Sarfate exited Sunday's loss in the second inning, reporting elbow soreness, and underwent X-rays on Monday. He'll be sidelined for at least 4-5 days before throwing a baseball, Brewers player development director Reid Nichols said.

"The X-rays were negative and the doctor feels pretty good that we're talking about nothing more than a strain," Nichols said. "We don't think there's anything significant there."

Huntsville began the year with a threesome of prospects at the top of the rotation. Left-hander Dana Eveland is currently pitching out of the Brewers' bullpen, but the others have not been so lucky. Lefty Manny Parra was shut down in July and underwent shoulder surgery on Aug. 4. Now Sarfate's health is in question.

The latter could still pitch this season, Nichols said. Huntsville's loss on Sunday was its ninth in 10 games, and the Double-A season runs through Sept. 5.

"We'll see what happens," Nichols said.

In 16 starts for Huntsville, Parra was 5-6 with a 3.96 earned run average. Sarfate is 9-9 with a 4.00 ERA in 23 starts. Parra turns 23 in October and Sarfate is 24.

Just to clarify on the Brevard County postseason chances, the Manatees pretty much have to win the division. If Vero Beach wins both halves, the wild card from the division will go to the team with the best full-season overall record. I don't have the specifics, but Palm Beach is currently at .500 overall for the full season, and given Brevard's stinky first-half, a wild card doesn't look realistic at this time...

If strain is being used in terms of liagments then yes it's a tear but not a complete tear. This is often the case with knees ligaments like ACL. Unfortuneately, the word has morphed into meaning a mild injury to other body parts. If Sarfate has a true strain of a ligament(Ulnar most likely) I doubt the crew would be talking about him returning this year. I think some pitchers have now opted for tommy john to fix just strained ligaments if that liagment has been a problem area.

If they are talking about him throwing in 4-5 days then it must be a fairly minor strain, and most likely of the muscular variety. A muscle strain happens when the muscle fibers pull or tear away from the ligaments.

Nashville Media Notes for Tuesday (PDF format):

With his next appearance for the Sounds, third baseman Tony Zuniga will play in his 1,000th career professional contest, all in the minor leagues. The 30-year-old is in his 10th pro season.

Wow, way to hang in there, Tony. Goodness knows his performance since joining the Sounds deserves our attention as well. No doubt he'll have a job in 2006 and beyond -- it's just a matter of where and opportunity -- he and his agent will have to choose what is perceived to be the best situation...

Among the TOPPS Minor League Players of the Month for July:

Pioneer League --

Angel Salome, 19, of New York City, made sure the Milwaukee Brewers understood he was a different player this season. The catcher hit .235 with the Brewers' team in the Arizona Rookie League in 2004 after being drafted in the 5th round and was moved up this season to the Helena Brewers of the Pioneer League. Salome quickly showed he was too much for Pioneer pitchers to handle when he hit .459 with 17 RBIs in nine June games. He never did cool off, hitting .422 with 33 RBIs in 27 games in July. When he left for the South Atlantic League at the end of July, he was leading the league with a .419 average and 50 RBIs.

I spoke with Dennis this morning. He told me they said he strained his nerve, the one that was moved from the elbow. I'm not sure what the cause was but, he said his arm felt ok today, a little stiff, but might throw lightly Thursday. Hopefully, they will be careful with him and evaluate the situation for the long term. Thanks for all the nice thoughts.

Final: Jupiter (Marlins) 1, Brevard County 0

Crushing loss...

Brevard County Box Score:

RHP Tim Dillard done in by his own error, otherwise his line is as recognizable as always -- efficiently brilliant; still no word on the status of Lou Palmisano...

One Brewer comes in at # 8 on the latest Baseball America Hot Prospect List, and considering that a certain Nashville first baseman is absent from the entire list, take this with a grain of salt:

www.baseballamerica.com/t...t2005.html

Nashville Site:

"First baseman Prince Fielder has 24 hits in his last 43 at-bats (.558), adding 16 RBIs while hitting safely in 10 of his last 11 games. The 21-year-old prospect is currently tied for second in the PCL with his team-leading 26 home runs and ranks 7th with 83 RBIs. His 26 home runs are tied for the 8th-best single-season output in the Sounds? 28-year history."

I'd say that defines "hot".

What has gotten into Josh?

Innings, I'm afraid. He threw 85 innings at Cowley County last season before being drafted and another 75 at Helena. This year, he's already up to 114. That's getting close to 300 innings in just two years, and that's a whole lot of pitches for a 21-year old, especially one with less-than-perfect mechanics.

It doesn't surprise me at all that he seems to be wearing down. Hopefully the Brewers are keeping a close eye on him and are taking steps to prevent an arm injury.
