Another in a long list of disappointing outtings for Mark Rogers.

 IP H R ER BB K 2.1 7 9 9 4 3

Everytime he starts I grimmace as the page loads, I brace myself for the inevitable, and yet I still cringe. The season couldn't end soon enough for poor Mark. He needs to put this season behind him and come back to WV next year with a chip on his shoulder.

I am not saying that his whole career will end up this way, so don't jump all over me, but Mark Rogers has been flat out been terrible this year. I don't care about radar gun readings, I want results and this kid hasn't produced much since the day he was drafted.

Final: Palm Beach (Cardinals) 1, Brevard County 0

Yawn to Florida State League playing conditions and 1-0 games (when you're on the wrong end of the score)...

Brevard County Box Score:

Four Manatee hits and zero walks - ugh; lefty Steve Hammond might be in Huntsville next spring, he was a 6th round pick out of Long Beach State this spring...

Leadoff Steve Sollman double wasted in the first a bad omen; Steve Moss leadoff single in the 4th, then promptly picked off...

Final: Kannapolis (White Sox) 9, West Virginia 6

West Virginia Box Score:

Y'know, the Brewers will continue to spin Mark Rogers' upside and youth, but there's no denying he's been consistently very ineffective -- when he's managed to string together a few scoreless frames to begin a game, he's faltered with multi-run 4th and 5th innings on several occasions -- this was just hideous from the start tonight, retiring seven of 19 batters -- actually, not even that, one runner caught stealing; Justin Barnes stranded two runners to save Mark an uglier pitching line; RHP Dane Renkert effective in his Power debut; OF Brendan Katin's first appearance in a while...

West Virginia Game Log:

Check out the Kannapolis 2nd inning -- a bizarre mix of loading the bases on no base hits, almost escaping the damage, a two-out infield hit, and a killer grand slam -- c'mon, Mark...

Is this Rogers' first start after missing a few with a blister? I'm not trying to make an excuse for him, but since I was gone last weekend I want to make sure I didn't miss a start.

I know Rogers wasn't a particularly popular pick on draft day, and it's obvious he still has his fair share of critics. However, while he has struggled I still have to cut him some slack. My patience is growing more and more thin, but you gotta root for the kid.

How about some of the early draftees from this year's draft tonight? Mat Gamel, who was an early board favorite that really hasn't gotten much love after starting the season slow, is already 2 for 3 tonight with a double and 3 RBI. Right around when Braun got bumped up Gamel caught fire. He has struck out far too much, but IIRC, his strikeout pace upon entering pro baseball over the first month or so was horrendous. Both Will Inman and Steven Hammond pitched admirably tonight, despite handing out too many free passes.

Huntsville Site Game Summary:

Gemoll Gets Stars Going in Right Direction

Brandon Gemoll knocked in the winning run with a tenth inning sacrifice fly to push Huntsville past Tennessee 3-2 Friday night in the opener of a three-game set at Smokies Park. The Stars won their second straight game to improve to 22-31 in the second half of the season, while the Smokies dropped their second straight game, both by a run, to fall to 23-30 in the second half and 30-30 at home. The Stars won their second straight game over the Smokies to square the season series at six games apiece.

Vinny Rottino singled with one out in the tenth against Phil Stockman, who suffered the loss for a second consecutive night, and moved to second base on a base hit by Brad Nelson, his second of the game. Stockman uncorked a wild pitch to make the count 2-1 to Enrique Cruz that allowed Rottino to move to third base and Nelson to second. The Smokies elected to walk Cruz to load the bases before Gemoll drove a 2-1 offering into left field to plate Rottino with the go-ahead and winning run, marking the second straight game in which he has knocked in the decisive run.

Jerome Gamble struck out Jerry Gil, retired Stephen Drew on a foul pop up and fanned Dan Uggla to end the game and earn his third win of the season. The right-hander has tossed two scoreless frames in each of his three outings on the current road trip.

Gil delivered a two-out, two-run double in the fifth to break up a scoreless game and put the home team on top. The Stars bounced right back in the top of the sixth to score twice to tie the game. Rottino led off with a walk, moved to third on a Nelson single and scored when Cruz grounded into a double play. Gemoll then doubled to left and came plateward on a single by Jeff Winchester, who knocked in his first run since August 8.

Josh Habel went five innings for the Stars, allowing two runs on six hits and a pair of walks in his first start against the Smokies. Keith Stamler worked three scoreless innings and closed his appearance by striking out the side in the eighth inning. Tony Gwynn, Jr. went hitless in five at-bats and lost a 14-game hitting streak, the longest for any Huntsville hitter this season.

The series continues Saturday night with right-hander Carlos Villanueva making his double-A debut for the Stars against Smokies? right-hander Adam Bass. Coverage gets underway at 6:00 p.m. central time on ESPN 1450 AM and through the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com.

Nashville Site Game Summary:

NASHVILLE ? The Nashville Sounds lost their third consecutive game to the Round Rock Express on Friday evening, coming up on the short end of a 6-4 decision in front of 10,537 fans in the finale of a four-game series at Greer Stadium.

The loss, Nashville's sixth in its last seven games, cut the Sounds? lead in the PCL American Conference Northern Division to five games over the red-hot Omaha Royals, who have won 19 of their last 23 contests. The crowd was the sixth sellout of the season at Greer Stadium.

Former Sound Carlos Rivera broke a 4-4 in the top of the eighth inning with a two-out, two-run double to right-center off Nashville reliever Mitch Stetter. Charles Gipson, who singled, and Mike Coolbaugh, who was hit by a Jeff Bennett pitch, scored on the knock to give Round Rock a 6-4 advantage. Rivera (3-for-4) finished the series with seven hits in 12 at-bats against his former club (.583).

Round Rock got off to a quick start, plating four runs against Sounds starter Wes Obermueller in the top of the first inning. The visitors jumped out to a 2-0 lead with two runs off Obermueller on the first five pitches of the ballgame. Gipson opened the game with a double for the second straight night and scored when Brooks Conrad followed with a two-bagger of his own. Luke Scott continued his strong series at the plate with an RBI single up the middle to increase the lead to 2-0. The outfielder finished 8-for-17 (.471) in the four-game series. Tommy Whiteman doubled the advantage to 4-0 later in the frame with a two-out double to right-center.

Nashville pulled within a run at 4-3 with three runs in the bottom of the fourth against Express starter Brandon Duckworth. Dave Krynzel put the Sounds on the board when he led off with his sixth triple of the season then scored when Jeff Cirillo followed with an RBI double to left, his first hit in four at-bats during his rehab stint. Nelson Cruz brought home Cirillo with an RBI two-bagger into the left field corner to cut the Round Rock lead to 4-2. Warren Morris pulled Nashville within a run with a sacrifice fly to left, which scored Cruz.

Pinch-hitter Corey Hart tied the contest for the Sounds in the bottom of the seventh with a one-out RBI double to left off New Orleans reliever Scott MacRae that scored Steve Scarborough.

MacRae (3-0) earned a back-door win after blowing the save for the Express. He allowed one run in his three innings of work. Bennett (2-2) took the loss after surrendering a pair of runs in his two-thirds of an inning.

Nashville executed its eighth successful fake-to-third, throw-to-first pickoff of the season when Obermueller caught Scott stealing home to end the top of the sixth.

The Sounds continue their homestand on Saturday when they welcome the Oklahoma RedHawks to town for the 6 p.m. opener of a four-game series. Nashville right-hander Gary Glover (5-2, 3.11) will make the start and face Oklahoma right-hander and Nashville native R.A. Dickey (7-5, 6.24).

re Rogers, I am glad I was one of the critics... not of him, but of high school pitching drafted high up.

So many college pitchers get drafted and perform quickly and even become stars... it seems to me to be a complete waste of money and then followup resources to pour down the drain.

What I do not understand is this: we drafted a guy who cannot throw a strike. Don't you think if we WERE to draft high school pitchers, we would draft the ones that could throw a ball straight.

We should be drafting the high school pitchers lower down and overpaying a little slot money so they sign. Since it is a lottery, why dont we buy more tickets -and cheaper

Just because the guy throws gas, does not mean instant success. Maybe they should move the guy down to Helena so he can blow them away with his fastball and get the mans confidence up, doesn't belong in W.V.

Just win baby !!

He's like the right handed version of JDLR. Throws hard, has good secondary pitches, but can't command anything of it for his life and subsequently gets knocked around.

This was Rogers second start since he missed with the blister problem. He started last Sat(8-13) against Lexington, but didn't factor in the decision. Here are his stats.

Final: Helena 8, Idaho Falls (Royals) 3

Helena Box Score:

Brewer pitchers combine for eight walks, which is totally unacceptable -- however, the right-left-right combo of Inman - Parillo - Malave represents three of the four youngest pitchers on the squad, all under 20 and with bright futures, it seems; five Brewers with two hits apiece -- among those ten hits, five were doubles, two by Ned Yost -- 12 hits overall for the team on the night...
