Lorenzo Cain receiving some honors as the Arizona Rookie League MVP. From today's Daily Dish at Baseball America:

Brewers outfielder Lorenzo Cain was named the Rookie-level Arizona League MVP, even though the Brewers? entry was just 11-17 in both halves of play. Cain ranked second in the league in batting, tied for fifth in home runs and third in RBIs during a .356-5-37 season. He went 1-for-4 in his debut yesterday in the Pioneer League with Helena. The 2004 17th-round pick signed this year as a draft-and-follow.

Congratulations to Cain on the honor and for his promotion to Helena. Cain, Darren Ford and Derek Miller are all faring well as draft & follow signees from this spring. Cain joins Angel Salome as organizational MVPs for their respective leagues.

Brad Nelson is back in Nashville, with a hit and a walk in the 1st 2 ABs of his return. Heres hoping he finishes strong.

Salome is already 3 for 3 for the Power tonight, and is a HR shy of the cycle.

Dillard with another strong outing for BC, going 6 innings w/ 6 K.

Stephen Chapman absent from Helena's lineup again tonight. Michael Bell is back in their, despite the news that he broke his finger. Why oh why doesn't Chapman get regular playing time?

Wow is Drew Anderson on fire lately. Looks like he wants to be in Huntsville next year.

Nice pitching pretty much all around tonight. Good to see Li'l Ben with a good outing. The Sounds need him ready to go in the playoffs. With a strong finish, he or Sarfate might wind up in the bigs

Final, Game One: Nashville 0, Memphis (Cardinals) 1

Nashville Site Game Summary:

Sounds Scoreless Streak Continues In 1-0 Loss

Date Posted: 9/1/2005

MEMPHIS ? The Nashville Sounds' slide continued in the opener of a doubleheader on Thursday evening at AutoZone Park. The club's scoreless streak ran to 24 consecutive innings following a 1-0 loss to the Memphis Redbirds, Nashville's third straight shutout defeat and the team's tenth loss in its last 11 contests.

Memphis first baseman Chris Duncan gave the Redbirds all the offense they would need when he led off the bottom of the second inning with a line-drive solo homer to right off Sounds starter Ben Hendrickson, his team-leading 21st roundtripper of the season.

Former Sound Kevin Jarvis (11-6) combined with a pair of relievers to notch the four-hit shutout for Memphis.

The teams are currently playing the nightcap. Complete results will be posted at the conclusion of this evening's on-field action.

Nashville Box Score, Game One:

The Sounds shut-out again? As you can guess, not much offense, and no one worth mentioning in the lineup. Ben Hendrickson with a 6-inning complete game, a solo home run being the only run he gave up. One of his better outings recently, but he still picks up the L to go to 6-12 on the season. He even picked up one of the four base hits.

Nashville Game Log, Game One:

While this was only a 7-inning contest, this game was wrapped up in under two hours, and it's not hard to tell why by glancing at the game log. Again, not much worth noting as the Sounds get shut-out for the third time in three games.

Final: Daytona (Cubs) 1, Brevard County, 7

Brevard County Box Score:

Tim Dillard continues his impressive season, winning his 12th game of the year while going 6 without allowing an earned run. He keeps his WHIP down as well allowing only 5 hits and one walk while striking out 6. Joe Thatcher does a nice job in relief pitching 3 scoreless innings. Steve Moss, who goes 2 for 3 with 3 runs scored, and Drew Anderson, 3 for 4, stand out offensively in this one as the Manatees continue to make a late push towards the playoffs.

Brevard County Game Log:

Three of Dillard's inning went 1-2-3. This game was tied through the top of the 6th before the Manatees struck for 3 runs in both the 6th and the 8th to put this game away.

Final: Delmarva (Orioles) 4, West Virginia 5

West Virginia Site Game Summary:

Power hold off Shorebirds

Charleston, WV (September 1, 2005) ? The West Virginia Power held off a late surge by the Delmarva Shorebirds in the ninth inning of Thursday night?s game, and went on to beat the Shorebirds by the final score of 5-4 in the final game of the season at Appalachian Power Park.

The scoring started in the first inning when Angel Salome scored on a wild pitch to give the Power a 1-0 lead. Delmarva tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the second inning on Jake Duncan?s RBI groundout. The Shorebirds took their only lead of the game in the fifth inning on Paco Figueroa?s RBI single. The Power took the lead for good, scoring three runs in the sixth inning. Angel Salome tied the game on an RBI single and Hasan Rasheed gave the Power the lead on a clutch, two out, two run single. The Power added another run in the seventh inning when Angel Salome reached on a fielder?s choice knocking in Charlie Fermaint. The Shorebirds did not go away quietly. Juan Gutierrez came through with a pinch-hit two run double with two outs in the ninth inning to make it a 5-4 game. The game ended with the tying run in scoring position for Delmarva when Paco Figueroa grounded out to Alcides Escobar.

Dane Renkert (1-0) earned the victory, Ben Stanczyk (10) earned the save and Carlos Perez (11-8) obtained the loss. The Power are 32-32 in the second half after the win and the Shorebirds move to 40-25 with the loss.

The Power will begin the final four game series of the season against the Lake County Captains on Friday night. The Power will throw right-handed pitcher Yovani Gallardo (7-3, 2.90) and the Captains will counter with left-handed pitcher Chuck Lofgren (5-4, 2.57). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.

West Virginia Box Score:

LHP Derek Miller continues to pitch well, going 5.1 innings giving up a couple of earned runs. Kevin Roberts may be on a stricter pitch count at this point in the season given the amount of innings he tossed at the University of Houston. Angel Salome with one of his finest nights since joining the Power, going 3 for 4 and falling a home run short of the cycle. Alcides Escobar, Will Lewis and Hasan Rasheed all with two hits on the evening. Oddly enough, no one else did have a hit in the lineup. Stanczyk with an ugly 9th, but gets the job done to notch his 10th save of the year.

West Virginia Game Log:

Rasheed's 2-run single in the 6th the biggest hit of the evening. Stanczyk ran into his trouble in the 9th after he had already recorded two outs.

Final: Huntsville 2, Tennessee (Diamondbacks) 4

Huntsville Site Game Summary:

Back-to-Back Jacks Sink Stars

Chris Carter and Stephen Drew hit back-to-back home runs in the sixth inning to break a 1-1 tie and power Tennessee to a 4-2 win over Huntsville Thursday night in the final game of a four-game set at Smokies Park. The Smokies won the last two games of the series to gain a split and improved to 28-38 in the second half, while the Stars slipped to 29-37 in the second half. Huntsville won the season series 12 games to nine, including eight out of 11 at Joe Davis Stadium.

Adam Haley walked to lead off the sixth inning and was forced out at second base on a ground ball hit by Dan Uggla. The Stars had a chance to turn a double play but second baseman Callix Crabbe dropped the ball on the transfer and never made a throw to first base. Carter then walloped a 3-1 Glenn Woolard offering onto the hill above the outfield wall and grassy berm area to give the home team a 3-1 lead. The ball was high in the air and hugging the line and was very close to being foul. Woolard thought the ball was foul and argued with first base umpire Will Robinson after the inning was over and was thrown out of the game. Drew then slammed the next pitch for a home run to right field to push the home team?s lead to 4-1. The two Smokies also homered, in reverse order, in the first inning against Woolard back in Huntsville on Saturday night.

Tennessee starter Enrique Gonzalez was taken out after six innings during which he gave up just one run on five hits and two walks. The right-hander fanned five and picked up his 11th win of the season in his last start. Elvin Nina tossed a scoreless seventh inning before Bill White took over in the eighth. The left-hander walked Tony Gwynn, jr. and Kennard Bibbs before Adam Heether grounded into a double play. Brandon Gemoll walked and White was taken out in favor of Mike Schultz, who gave up a base hit to Enrique Cruz that scored Gwynn, jr. to trim the lead to 4-2. Nelson Castro then flied out on the next pitch to end the inning. Schultz worked a scoreless ninth to earn his sixth save of the season.

The Stars begin their final home series of the season Friday night with right-hander David Bradley taking the hill against Chattanooga right-hander Josh Hall. Coverage gets underway at 6:50 p.m. central time on ESPN 1450 AM and through the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com.

Huntsville Box Score:

Bibbs blast last night is rewarded with a big bump up the lineup to the 2-spot. He and Gwynn each with 2 walks in the game setting the table. Gwynn scored twice and strikes out in his other two at-bats. No one in the lineup has more than one hit. Woolard pitched well until the 6th.

www.minorleaguebaseball.c...x_tenaax_1

Huntsville Game Log:

Woolard gives up back-to-back home runs in the 6th, one a solo shot by Stephen Drew. The Stars should have scored more than one run in the 8th with Gwynn and Bibbs leading off the frame with back-to-back walks.

Final: Helena 6, Great Falls (White Sox) 2

Helena Box Score:

The H-Crew scores 4 runs in the 9th to break up a 2-2 tie and pull comfortably ahead to close this one out. Darren Ford, Ned Yost and Michael Bell with 2 hits a piece, Ryan Crew the offensive star going 3 for 4 with a walk, 2 doubles, two runs scored an an RBI. Simon Beresford and Patrick Ryan combine for four scoreless innings out of the bullpen after starter David Welch allowed only 2 runs (1 earned) over 5 innings.

www.minorleaguebaseball.c...k_grfrok_1

Helena Game Log:

In what seems to be a common theme lately, Great Falls score their only 2 runs in the game with 2 outs in 5th. Michael Brantley with the big RBI single in the 9th as a pinch-hitter that broke up the tie. A few defensive miscues by Great Falls aid to the 9th-inning rally.

Final, Game Two: Nashville 4, Memphis (Cardinals) 3

Nashville Site Game(s) Summary:

First-Place Sounds Split Pair In Memphis

Date Posted: 9/1/2005

MEMPHIS ? The Nashville Sounds split a doubleheader with the Memphis Redbirds on Thursday evening, dropping the opener 1-0 before snapping a four-game skid with a 4-3 victory in the nightcap as the club wrapped up a nine-game road trip at AutoZone Park.

With the split, Nashville (72-68) returns to Greer Stadium holding a one-game lead in the PCL American Conference Northern Division over second-place Omaha, which defeated Iowa. The Sounds? magic number to clinch the division sits at four with four games to play.

Vinny Rottino (2-for-3) end the Sounds? season-high 24-inning scoreless drought ? which dated back to Sunday in Round Rock ? when he plated Trent Durrington with a one-out RBI double to right-center off Memphis spot starter Josh Pearce in the top of the first inning of the nightcap, giving Nashville a 1-0 lead.

Ryan Knox upped the Nashville lead to 3-0 in the fourth with a one-out, two-run shot to left off Pearce, his fifth tater of the season. Julio Mosquera, who singled earlier in the frame, scored on the blast. The Sounds tacked on another run later in the inning on back-to-back, two-out doubles from Steve Scarborough and pitcher Brett Evert, who helped his own cause with his first knock of the year.

Evert, who made a spot start for the Sounds, did not allow a hit until Tim Hummel?s fourth-inning double, which chased the right-hander from the ballgame with a no-decision to his credit.

Memphis ended the Nashville shutout bid in the fourth when John Gall, who had drawn a walk from Evert to open the frame, scored on Brad Cresse?s RBI groundout against reliever Alec Zumwalt to make the score 4-1.

The Redbirds didn?t go down without a fight, plating two runs against Sounds reliever Mike Adams in the bottom of the seventh. Milko Jaramillo opened the frame with a single and moved to second when Skip Schumaker followed with a knock of his own. Bo Hart missed tying the contest by a matter of inches as he drilled a ball off the top of the wall in left-center for an RBI double to bring home Jaramillo and cut the Nashville lead to 4-2. After a Chris Duncan strikeout, Chad Allen pulled Memphis within a run with an RBI groundout to second. Adams recovered to strike out Gall to put the clamps on the victory.

Zumwalt (1-0) earned his first career Class AAA victory with two scoreless innings of relief work. Adams notched his second save. Pearce (2-3) allowed four runs on eight hits in his 3 2/3 innings to take the loss for the Redbirds in a spot start, his first of the season.

In the opener, Redbirds first baseman Chris Duncan gave the home club all the offense it would need when he led off the bottom of the second with a line-drive solo homer to right off Sounds starter Ben Hendrickson, his team-leading 21st roundtripper of the season.

Outfielder Brad Nelson, who rejoined the Sounds prior to the twinbill after spending the previous two months with Double-A Huntsville, made an immediate impact in his return outing for Nashville, singling in his initial at-bat and throwing out Allen at the plate from his post in left field to end the third inning and keep the score 1-0.

Nashville had its best chance to score in the top of the sixth. Chris Barnwell and Nelson Cruz opened the frame with consecutive walks from ex-Sound Kevin Jarvis. After Nelson sacrificed both runners ahead one base, Jarvis issued an intentional walk to Mike Rivera to load the bases before being pulled in favor of left-handed reliever Tyler Johnson, who induced a fly ball to left from Warren Morris. Barnwell tagged from third and attempted to score but was thrown out by Gall.

Jarvis (11-6) tossed 5 1/3 scoreless frames to pick up his first victory in three starts against his former club this season. The right-hander went 2-for-2 at the plate to add to his solid evening. Brian Falkenborg came on to work a scoreless top of the seventh to earn his third save for Memphis.

Hendrickson (6-12) tossed the Sounds? second complete game in as many nights, working all six innings of the opener, but took the loss after surrendering the game?s lone run on seven hits.

The Sounds return to Greer Stadium on Friday to begin a regular season-ending four-game series against the Round Rock Express (AAA-Astros). Left-hander Tommy Phelps (0-0, 0.00) will take the hill in the 7:00 p.m. series opener on Friday to face a yet-to-be-determined Round Rock hurler.

The Express will only be playing for pride in the series, however, as Round Rock was eliminated from postseason contention on Thursday following their loss to Albuquerque combined with division-leading Oklahoma?s win against New Orleans.

Omaha, which trails the Sounds by a game in the standings, heads to Oklahoma City to take on the Southern Division-leading RedHawks in a crucial series for both clubs. Oklahoma carries a narrow half-game lead over Albuquerque, which visits Memphis, into the regular season?s final weekend.

Nashville Box Score, Game Two:

The Sounds make sure they're not shut-out for the 4th time in four games by scoring a run quickly in the first. Vinnie Rottino 2 for 3 with a double and Ryan Knox adds a 2-run blast. Evert and Zumwalt do a very good job through 5 innings, Mike Adams continues to struggle giving up 2 runs in the 9th but holding on for his 2nd save.

www.minorleaguebaseball.c...a_mrbaaa_2

Nashville Game Log, Game Two:

Alec Zumwalt does a great job getting out of a jam, with two in scoring position and nobody out, he gets out of the 4th inning by allowing only one run to score. The 9th inning could have been a lost worse, as the first three Memphis batters reached.

Huntsville Times:

Stars players fail to make All-Star team

For 14 consecutive seasons, the Huntsville Stars had at least one member of the Southern League postseason All-Star team. Now, for the fourth time in seven years, the Stars have been shut out.

The West Tenn Diamond Jaxx dominated the team, landing right-hander Ricky Nolasco and left-hander Renyel Pinto (coached by Huntsville resident Alan Dunn, the Jaxx pitching coach), along with DH Brandon Sing, the league leader in homers, and outfielder Matt Murton, who led the league in batting before his promotion to Triple-A.

Rounding out the team are catcher Russell Martin of Jacksonville, first baseman Casey Rogowski of Birmingham, second baseman Dan Uggla of Tennessee, shortstop Joel Guzman of Jacksonville, third baseman Rico Washington of Montgomery, outfielders Delmon Young of Montgomery, Jerry Owens of Birmingham and Jeremy Hermida of Carolina, reliever Chris Resop of Carolina and Jacksonville's Todd Donovan, elected "Best Hustler."

Sounds struggle in stretch

Playoff hopes hang on final home series

By MAURICE PATTON

Tennessean Staff Writer

Backing into it.

It's a phrase no playoff-bound team relishes hearing, but it's a simple fact facing the Nashville Sounds.

Following a season-best five-game win streak to give them a season-best 9½-game lead in the PCL's American North division, the Sounds have lost 16 of their last 20 games.

After last night's doubleheader split at Memphis, their lead has dwindled to a game over second-place Omaha with four to play.

The Sounds lost Game 1 last night on their third consecutive shutout, falling 1-0 to the Redbirds. The Sounds won the nightcap 4-3.

Nashville closes with a four-game series against visiting Round Rock beginning tonight. The Sounds have lost seven of nine games against Round Rock in August and are 4-8 against the Express.

Nashville Manager Frank Kemblas knows some doubt has crept into his dugout.

"Now that we've started losing, I think they're panicking," he said. "The way they're approaching their at-bats, they're not approaching them like they were."

The current tailspin, which began with an 11-2 loss at Memphis on Aug. 13, coincides with the promotions of Prince Fielder, Corey Hart, Kane Davis and Jose Capellan to Milwaukee over a four-day period from Aug. 14-18.

"This team, these guys we have now, this team has won before," Kremblas said. " ? I think it would be very disappointing if we don't win."

Round Rock won three of four games at Greer Stadium during the Sounds' last home stand, one of four consecutive home-field series that Nashville has lost.

Since the All-Star break, the Sounds have won just one of six series at home.

Welcome back: The Sounds should have outfielder Brad Nelson back for the Round Rock series. Nelson opened the season with Nashville and was reassigned to Class AA Huntsville on June 29 when Nelson Cruz was called up. At Huntsville, Nelson batted .293 with 6 home runs and 38 RBI in 55 games, after hitting .253 with 6 homers and 37 RBI in 75 games for the Sounds.

Nelson was set to join the team last night in Memphis, taking the roster spot created when pitcher Wes Obermueller was recalled by the Brewers.

Brevard County Site Game Summary:

Manatees Dominate Cubs

Manatees Within One Game of First PLace With Three To Go

The Manatees showed the Daytona Cubs they were playoff contenders in a 7-1 romping Thursday night at Space Coast Stadium.

Manatees starter Tim Dillard displayed the same poise and control that made him a Post Season All-Star. Dillard breezed through the Daytona lineup for six innings, allowing one unearned run on five hits and a walk. He struck out six en route to his 12th win of the season. Reliever Joe Thatcher pitched the final three scoreless innings to record his second save.

The Manatees bats were hot, starting the scoring early in the first inning on a Drew Anderson double to score Steve Sollmann. Brevard County threw up three runs in each of the sixth and eighth innings before calling it a night. Lou Palmisano and Wandel Campana both had two RBI in the win, and Anderson ended up batting 3-4 with an RBI to add to his team leading batting average of .315. Steve Moss scored three of the Manatees runs in his 2-3 performance.

With the win, the Manatees jumped into sole possession of second place in the FSL East Division. The Manatees currently stand one game behind the first place Palm Beach Cardinals, who lost to the Jupiter Hammerheads Thursday night, in the race for the final playoff spot in the East. With three games left to play, the Manatees can increase their playoff chances tomorrow night against the Daytona Cubs at 7:00 pm. (6:00 Central). It's the Manatees final regular season home game of 2005. It's also Fan Appreciation night here at Space Coast Stadium, so early arriving fans through the gates will receive a game used baseball bat courtesy of the Brevard County Manatees.

Power ends home slate as it began: with big win

Michael Dailey

Charleston Daily Mail sportswriter

The West Virginia Power ended their 70-game home schedule the same way they began it: with an exciting win in front of a boisterous capacity crowd at Appalachian Power Park.

Southpaw Power starter Derek Miller allowed just two runs working into the sixth inning while Angel Salome and Hasan Rasheed each knocked in a pair of runs in leading the Power to a 5-4 win over the Delmarva Shorebirds Thursday night. A crowd of 4,519 energetic and appreciative fans caught the win.

It evened West Virginia's record at 32-32, while Northern Division leader Delmarva dropped to 40-25.

And not only was the result similar to the Power's opening night, the excitement level was nearly as high too.

"Ironically, it reminded me a lot of opening night," said Power first baseman Grant Richardson. "Every night has been pretty much the same. We get a lot of fans coming out, screaming and hollering whether we were doing well in the season or bad in the season.

"I'm glad we could finish strong for them by winning three out of four against the first-place team."

Power reliever Dane Renkert (1-0) picked up the win, while Ben Stanczyk picked up his 10th save after working a shaky ninth.

"We want to finish strong so that we can build on next year," Power manager Ramon Aviles said. "We played pretty good ball tonight and I'm glad that we could send the fans home with a win. They deserved it."

Like Richardson and Aviles, second baseman Will Lewis also wanted to send the fans home with one last win.

"Oh man, it was good to give them a win," said Lewis, who had two of the Power's nine hits. "They've been here every game, even when we had our bad streak.

"It's good to go out on a positive note and give them something to talk about until next season."

And while Lewis arrived in Charleston with much apprehension, he leaves nearly five months later with much appreciation.

"When I got here, I was a little nervous," Lewis said. "It was a new place and I really didn't know what to expect. But when we got here they greeted us with open arms.

"The host families have been incredible. I have never, ever had an experience like this before. They helped us out so much."

Richardson, who also spent the entire season in Charleston, also became attached to his new surroundings, both on and off the field.

"The fans have been great," he said. "I couldn't have asked for a better fan base or a better town. I had a lot of fun this summer.

"I have no regrets at all. I can honestly say that I've lived it up here. I even went whitewater rafting on one of the off days. That was awesome ... the time of my life."
