Brewers back in business

By KEVIN SHIVELY - IR Sports Writer

The Helena Brewers finally strung together a pair of wins.

The Brewers shut out Great Falls 13-0 Tuesday, winning their second game in a row for the first time since a second straight win over Casper on August 24th.

"The big thing was to get an easy win," said Helena hitting coach Bobby Randall. "Its not the kind of game you really plan on, but having a win like that is nice with the season winding down."

The Brewers win, accompanied by a 7-1 loss for Missoula, bumps the Helena club back to a two-game lead with two games remaining.

The Brewers would have to lose both games, and Missoula would have to win both of theirs to force a second-half tie.

That won't happen if the Brewers can keep up Tuesday's pace.

The Helena pitching staff allowed only five hits and one walk in the game.

"The big thing was that we didn't want to push pitchers," said Helena pitching coach Mark Littell. "A couple of the guys we had out there could possibly pitch in the first couple games of the playoffs, so we wanted to keep our pitch counts down."

Simon Beresford started on the mound, pitching into the fourth, allowing only three hits and striking out five.

"We just wanted to see guys throw strikes and get off the mound," said Littell.

Lefty David Welch took over for Beresford in the fourth, closed it out and pitched two more innings, allowing only one hit and also striking out five.

Wilfrido Laureano and Ronny Malave finished the game out. Laureano pitched the seventh and eighth, allowing one hit, and Malave shut down the side in the ninth.

On offense, the Brewers were able to string together some hits and got out to a 10-0 lead after three innings.

"The first three innings were critical," said Randall. "Its always good to score early, and they hit the ball hard."

Great Falls made several mistakes that helped the Brewers as well.

In the first inning, Helena scored runs on an error, a sacrifice fly and a wild pitch.

Great Falls committed five errors in the game.

Ryan Crew hit a two-out, two-run homer in the second inning, and Kenny Holmberg followed it with a solo shot of his own.

Crew led the team, hitting 2-for-3 with three RBI and Holmberg's shot was his 12th of the season.

In the third, two of Helena's four runs scored on walks.

The Brewers took a break and then started scoring again in the seventh when Israel Chirino walked the first three batters of the inning. All three crossed the plate.

Carlos Perez (4-6, 5.71) picked up the loss for the White Sox.

With two games left in the regular season, Helena and the White Sox will square off again tonight at 7:05 (8:05 Central).
