In an otherwise dim stretch of playing out the string for the Huntsville Stars, at least they'll now get a chance to see 21-year-old RHP Carlos Villanueva, promoted from Brevard County (which doesn't help the Manatee playoff push, but it's an exciting player promotion).

Good luck to Carlos, joining fellow former manatee Ty Taubenheim in the Stars' rotation.

From OurSportsCentral:

CHARLESTON, WV (August 17, 2005) - The West Virginia Power, class A affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers have made yet another roster move.

Today, right-handed pitcher Eric Thomas was sent to High A Brevard County and right-handed pitcher Dane Renkert was added to the roster from Helena to take his place.

Eric Thomas, a third round pick in 2003 went 0-1 with a save and a 3.44 ERA with the Power this season. Dane Renkert was picked in the 29th round of the 2005 draft from Washington State University. He went 2-1 with a save and a 2.81 ERA over 14 games with Helena.

The Power will continue the series with the Lakewood BlueClaws on Wednesday night at Appalachian Power Park. The Power will throw left-handed pitcher Derek Miller (1-0, 0.73) and Lakewood will counter with left-handed pitcher Derek Griffith (7-10, 3.74). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.

Helena LHP Joe Thatcher, a recent independent league signee who has done well in limited action thus far, has been promoted to Brevard County.

The Brewers are at least moving age-appropriate players this week, with all other things being equal in terms of talent and such. Thatcher is 24, and RHP Dane Renkert (Helena to West Virginia) is 23 -- the organization needs to push these older newcomers to determine if they have a Mike Adams-like diamond in the rough...

The Brewers are cashing in those frequent flyer miles this week!

21-year-old Helena super-utility man Agustin Septimo has been promoted to West Virginia, where he began the season. Just one more chink removed from the powerful Helena lineup, here's Septimo's 2005 numbers, with the breakdown between the two levels:

Josh Murray has been transferred to Brevard County.

Power Press Notes:

Josh Murray, a second round pick in 2002 played second base, shortstop and also played a lot of third base with the Power. Murray hit .206 in 89 games with eight homeruns and 32 runs batted in.

Murray may be able to sneak in a few more AB's with the Manatees than he would with the Power, given the make-up of the current West Virginia infield roster.

Catcher Clay Blevins, after just one appearance with Brevard County, has returned to Helena.

Fellow catcher Brad Willcutt has suffered a leg injury, apparently, so Blevins joins Bryan Opdyke and will help guide the H-Crew pitchers as they head to the postseason.

Big third baseman shuffle announced:

Adam Heether moves to Huntsville from Brevard County

Ryan Braun moves to Brevard County from West Virginia

Mat Gamel moves to West Virginia from Helena

As far as impacts elsewhere -- Vinny Rottino will play elsewhere on the field for Huntsville, I'm sure, and no word yet on a Helena reinforcement. That Helena squad has sent a slew of folks forward, both position players and pitchers, without getting a likewise boost from Arizona.

Huntsville Press Release:

Huntsville, AL- The Milwaukee Brewers have announced that Stars utility man Vinny Rottino has been promoted to Triple-A Nashville of the Pacific Coast League. Rottino, signed by the Brewers as a non-drafted free agent in 2003, was hitting .296 with six home runs and 52 RBI in 120 games for Huntsville and will join the Sounds tonight during their series against Oklahoma.

Rottino, in his third season of professional baseball, knocked in 124 runs in 2004 for the former Brewers Single-A affiliate Beloit Snappers. He was also named to the mid-season Southern League All-Star North team.

His spot on the Stars roster will be taken by Adam Heether. Heether, selected by the Brewers in the 11th round of the 2003 draft, was batting .305 with six home runs and 54 RBI in 93 games with the Brevard County Manatees.

The 23 year-old will join the Stars tonight during their series against the Mobile BayBears.

Now if we could only have enough talent to be able to do the same things with our catchers next year.

Braun and Heether will be on the Huntsville squad next year, maybe for most of the year. Even though he's the better third baseman right now, Heether better get his first baseman's or second baseman's glove warmed up.

In the three years or so I've been on this site, I don't remember such a mass movement of players up the food chain. It certainly says something for the last two drafts by Jack Z that we can continually re-load at the lower levels. Now if we can just get that injury free, front line starter prospect.....

That's an exciting move, although really late in the season. It seems all three guys are getting a cup-of-coffee of sorts to end the season. Can Braun's bat alone carry the Manatees to the playoffs? Rottino's versatility will help the Sounds, which makes me wonder if Fielder and/or Hart will be bumped back down when Clark returns.

I think I'm most interested to see if Gamel's production at the plate continues at A-ball.

Colby,

I wasn't talking about just the recent migration of 3B's, but also the movement of Helena and BC players to higher levels. Maybe it's just me, but I don't recall this kind of movement before.

Brewer Press Release:

The Brewers agreed to terms with their 21st round selection for the 2005 Free Agent Draft, RHP Justin Stires . . . Stires recently completed his first season at Saddleback Junior College in Mission Viejo, Calif . . . Justin is 6-2 and 190 lbs . . . the signing marks the 22nd of the 49 Brewers draftees from the 2005 Free Agent Draft.

We know virtually nothing about Stires except that he was a teammate of 28th round draft pick infielder Scott McKnight, now at Helena. Unclear as to whether Stires can be expected to pitch this season, or perhaps in fall instructionals at Maryvale.

Actually homer, my response wasn't made directly to your post. I was just speaking in general terms about the flurry of moves. I do agree with you, there does seem to be more activity this year, and I'm sure a lot of that has to do with the fact that we're starting to see those big transactions affect the big-league club.
