Alcides Escobar the lone Brewer in the starting lineup (no Fielder or Hart yet), and he handles his first chance cleanly on the first batter to face his squad in the first http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

Peo Saguaros Bottom 1st

Robert Valido grounds out, shortstop Alcides Escobar to first baseman Michael Johnson.

Alcides Escobar then singles, steals second, and is thrown out at third.....

When I saw him in spring training, Escobar looked like he was about 14, very thin - nearly frail. It would be interesting to hear if Escobar has illed out any since the year has progressed. I also wonder if has fully mentally recovered from having a ball from his bat do harm to John Curtis.

It strikes me that Dana has gone in the space of a month from getting overblown praise to receiving overdone criticism.

I'm not in love with his present attitude either, but then I wasn't in love with the move that took him from AA to the majors and asked him to change overnight from a guy who threw 6 innings every 5th day to someone who was brought in for single innings and partial innings at completely random times.

I think the phrase 'fell apart' that has been used more than once here is accurate and tells its own story. Maddox, who gets so much praise here, wanted him, pulled him out of a routine, where he was getting regular work and developing very well and put him (a 21 yr old) in a situation where he had no routine and no regular work. Guess what? After the initial honeymoon period, he didn't do so well.

I just don't see how anyone can find that surprizing and I think the Brewers deserve just as much of the blame for the "falling apart" as Dana does.

After that first at-bat infield single, young Alcides Escobar went 0-for-4, striking out twice, stranding seven, ending three innings. Among his fielding chances, he was the middle man on a double-play ball.

Mitch Stetter struck out heralded Brandon Moss swinging to end the 7th. He then gave up the cycle in the 8th inning, allowing three runs -- ouch.

Here's your box score and game log for Saturday's game, box score will begin updating at 3:00 PM Central -- the next audio game for the Brewers' squad is Tuesday:

I tend to agree with you and I think it has a lot to do with his "less than super prospect" status. His numbers at AA were terrific and I think that excited people a great deal. He had a fair amount of success when he first came up and that excited people even more, so he was celebrated.

When he struggled, people were disappointed, moreso because he struggled badly at the end of the season.

Whether that was because he was fatigued physically or mentally due to the number of innings he pitched, or because he was out of shape, or a change in his routine I don't know and I don't think anyone else does either.

I agree. I overstated the case for change in routine. It is just one of many possible explanations and I over emphasised it in reaction to the posters who had him in next years rotation in early September and would rather have their spleen removed than watch him late in the month. (yes someone actually said that)

You're correct that none of us here really knows what caused him to struggle late in the year. However, if an organization takes a young prospect from AA all the way to the majors and at the same time completely changes how they want him to play, they have to accept some of the blame when it works out badly. Brewers' pitching coaching gets lavish praise in this forum, but they certainly aren't infallible and they may well have made several wrong calls in the case of Dana.

RHP Chris Saenz is no longer listed on the official AFL roster.

Is Saenz simply not ready yet after coming off Tommy John surgery? Or, is it looking more and more like the Brewers and Saenz won't reach agreement on a deal, making the just-turned 24-year-old a free agent on October 15th?

I wrote a Crack of the Bat column about Wood a couple of weeks ago, wondering how in the world he was noted voted as BA's player of the year. Sure, he did his damage in the California League, and we all know how batting stats can be inflated there, but he had 101 extra-base hits on the season, and he's a shortstop.

Looks like Dana dodged a lot of bullets today.

Colby,

I started a Brandon Wood thread a few months back. He's been working out with the same guy that trains Mia Hamm, Mary Pierce, Nomar, Rock Fox, etc. in Tempe, AZ. Apparently he was so weak when he was a sophmore in high school that he could barely hit the ball out of the infield. He generates tremendous power on what is still a relatively thin frame. I look forward to following his career going forward. Seems like a really nice kid too.

"Dustin Pedroia doesn't have the strength or bat speed to hit major-league pitching consistently, and he has no power......He probably has a future as a backup infielder if he can stop rolling over to third base and shortstop." Keith Law, 2006
