I'm looking forward to tomorrow's daily menu, which would likely feature Sarfate and Mike Jones, I think. Although I am enjoying following Eveland (if the game ever starts), Inman, and Gallardo

Sounds Swept In Twinbill, Fall To 0-3 On Year

OMAHA ? The Omaha Royals swept a doubleheader from the Nashville Sounds on Saturday evening, scoring the winning run in their last at-bat in both contests at Rosenblatt Stadium to drop Nashville to 0-3 on the young season.

Omaha took the opener 2-0 then posted a 3-2, eight-inning victory in the nightcap to improve to 3-0 on the year.

The first game featured a pitchers? duel between Sounds southpaw Zach Jackson and Omaha left-hander J.P. Howell. Neither team scored until the bottom of the sixth inning, when the Royals broke through for a pair of runs against Jackson on Chad Allen?s two-out, two-run double into the right field corner. Ruben Gotay, who reached on a two-out single, and Aaron Guiel, who followed with a walk, scored on the two-bagger.

Nashville?s best scoring opportunity in the opener came in the fifth when Brent Abernathy ripped a one-out double but was left on the basepaths as Chris Barnwell grounded out and Zach Sorensen flew out to end the frame.

Howell (1-0) allowed only two hits, struck out five batters, and walked none over six innings for Omaha to pick up the win. Dave Elder worked a scoreless seventh to notch his first save. Jackson (0-1) opened with 5 2/3 frames of scoreless, one-hit ball for Nashville before being touched for a pair of runs and took the loss in his Sounds and Brewers organization debut.

The Sounds got right to business in the nightcap, plating a pair of runs against Omaha starter Kyle Snyder in the top of the first inning. Tony Gwynn reached on an error to open the contest and moved to third on a ground-rule double by Dave Krynzel. Abernathy plated Gwynn with an RBI groundout and Nelson Cruz doubled the Sounds? lead to 2-0 with a run-scoring double to left-center that brought in Krynzel.

Omaha leftfielder Chip Ambres answered with a leadoff solo home run off Sounds starter Dana Eveland in the bottom of the second inning to pull the home team back within a run at 2-1.

The score held until the bottom of the sixth when the Sounds bullpen failed to hold a lead for the second time in the team?s first three games of the year.

Brett Evert opened the frame on the hill in relief of Eveland, who allowed one run on two hits over his five innings of work. With one out, Kerry Robinson hit a comebacker to Evert but the right-hander misfired into right field. One out later, a wild pitch moved Robinson to third before Guiel delivered a two-out RBI single to right to knot the contest at 2-2.

Omaha won the game with an old-fashioned manufactured run in the bottom of the eighth against Sounds reliever Mitch Stetter. Robinson opened the frame with a walk then moved to second on a Gotay sacrifice bunt. After stealing third, the veteran outfielder scored the game-winner on Guiel?s sacrifice fly to center.

Justin Huisman (1-0) earned the victory in relief for Omaha after tossing 2 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing only one hit while striking out two. Stetter (0-1) took the loss for Nashville after surrendering the game-winner.

The Sounds look to avoid a sweep when they wrap up the season-opening four-game series with a 1:35 p.m. matinee finale against the Royals on Sunday afternoon at Rosenblatt Stadium. Right-hander Dennis Sarfate takes the hill for Nashville to square off against Omaha right-hander Runelvys Hernandez.

Final: Brevard County 7, Daytona (Cubs) 1

Perfect season continues for the 'Tees...

Brevard County Box Score:

Alcides Escobar has already walked twice this season -- he went the entire Arizona Fall League without drawing one (while playing well otherwise); this team's going to be fun to watch, huh? Yovani Gallardo, so economical, managing 5 2/3 innings; not sure if Robert Hinton ever went beyond two IP while closing in West Virginia last season -- 2 1/3 tonight; it looks like RHP Josh Alliston is going to get the closer's nod early on in the season, despite the presence of the 2005 Power closer duo of Hinton and Ben Stanczyk...

Final: Delmarva (Orioles) 6, West Virginia 5

Nice comeback from 4-0 down early on, but not enough in the end; a lesson in defensive prowess, this game was not...

West Virginia Box Score:

A Patrick Ryan wild pitch scores the winning (well, losing) run in the 9th; the Power was sloppy while Will Inman was in the game, but young Will did put the leadoff man on three times in four chances; Mat Gamel and Angel Salome strike out in the 9th with the tying run in scoring position...

www.minorleaguebaseball.c...x_wvaafx_1

West Virginia Game Log:

The Power put up a three-spot in the 5th, but it could have been so much more, with a Salome GIDP right in the middle of it all; review the entire game log in detail -- Power Manager Mike Guerrero will lose some sleep over this one that could have been...

We should see a detailed game story from the Gazette Sunday AM...

Corey Thurman (Huntsville) had a no-hitter thru 4 innings and got pulled. Do you think it was a pitch count issue?

Corey Thurman (Huntsville) had a no-hitter thru 4 innings and got pulled. Do you think it was a pitch count issue?

Yes, it was; that, plus they wanted to get some other Stars' bullpen members some work; unfortunately minor league vet Mike Meyers had a disastrous outing (five runs, 1/3 of an inning); Huntsville has only one hit through seven innings -- a Callix Crabbe two-run single in the 2nd, it's 6-2 Braves in the bottom of the 8th in Mississippi; Thurman was dealin', though...

Five-Run Fifth Slows Down Stars

Martin Prado?s two-run double capped a five-run rally that led Mississippi to a 6-2 come back win over Huntsville on a cold, windy night at Trustmark Park. The Braves picked up their first win of the year and improved to 1-2, while the Stars were stymied in a bid to win a third straight road game to open the season.

Corey Thurman threw four scoreless, hitless frames for the Stars in his first outing in organized ball since August, 2004. The right-hander walked two and struck out five and ended three of the four innings with a punch out. Mike Meyers took over to open the fifth inning and gave up a single to Dax Norris on the first pitch and a single to Matt Esquivel on his third pitch before Carl Loadenthal doubled to drive in Norris and move Esquivel to third. Josh Arteaga?s ground ball to third scored Esquivel to tie the game before Onil Joseph?s pinch-hit single, his first hit of the season, plated Loadenthal to put the Braves on top 3-2. Gregor Blanco hit a ground ball to shortstop Ozzie Chavez but his throw to second base pulled Callix Crabbe off the bag and allowed Joseph to stay alive on the bases. Prado followed with his two-bagger to right to clear the bases, give the home team a 5-2 lead and chase Meyers from the hill. The Braves had been limited to four runs over the first 22 innings of the series before the five-run frame. Meyers had allowed only four earned runs in 21 innings over 11 outings with Huntsville last season.

Crabbe?s two-out, two-run double in the second inning put the visitors in front 2-0 and marked the third straight night the Stars had scored first. Mississippi starter Brady Endl was taken out after four innings after yielding the two runs on one hit and three walks. Bryan Digby, a second round selection by Atlanta in 2000 making his double-A debut, walked the bases loaded in the fifth inning before retiring Jeff Eure on a fielder?s choice grounder to end the threat and pick up the win.

Phil Stockman took over for the home side and worked three scoreless frames without giving up a hit, walking one and fanning five. The Australian right-hander has retired 15 of the 16 hitters he has faced in the series and has struck out eight. Glenn Tucker issued a leadoff walk to Kennard Bibbs in the ninth and a single to Chavez before retiring the next three hitters to end the game. ?We need to get the middle of the lineup going offensively,? said manager Don Money after the defeat. Huntsville has been held to 15 hits in the first three games of the series, although the Stars have drawn 17 walks.

The five-game set continues Sunday afternoon with left-hander Jeff Housman taking the hill for Huntsville against Mississippi southpaw Chris Waters. Coverage of the game begins at 12:50 p.m. and can be heard on ESPN Radio 1450 AM locally and via the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com.

Brevard County Game Summary from the Daytona Site:

Manatees Too Tough Once Again

Brevard County continues to pound out runs

[DAYTONA BEACH, FL] The Brevard County Manatees (3-0) continued their offensive explosion, beating the Cubs (0-3) 7-1 at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.

For the second consecutive night, things looked good early for Daytona. Sam Fuld singled to center to lead off the bottom of the first. A throwing error by Manatee catcher Carlos Corporan allowed Fuld to advance to third, and he scored on a wild pitch to give the Cubs an early 1-0 lead.

Brevard County, as they have done all series, answered back in the top of the second. Luke Hagerty (0-1) struggled with his control walking the leadoff hitter Hernan Iribarren. After stealing second, Iribarren reached third on a wild pitch. Travis Ezi singled in Iribarren to tie the game at 1-1. Carlos De La Cruz follwed with a walk, and Charlie Fermaint hit a two-out RBI single to give the Manatees their first lead at 2-1. Alcides Escobar hit a double down the left field line on the next pitch to drive in Ezi and De La Cruz making it 4-1 Brevard County.

That was all the run support Manatee starter Yovani Gallardo (1-0) would need as he pitched five and two-thirds innings allowing only one run on three hits while striking out three and walking just one. ?I had an outstanding spring training. I?m just hoping to continue into the season and keep it going the whole year,? Gallardo said.

Brevard County added another run in the seventh and two more in the ninth to complete the 7-1 win. The Manatees have scored 25 runs on 39 hits in three games, and Gallardo attributes the team?s fast start to their familiarty with each other. ?Pretty much the whole team played together last year in West Virginia,? Gallardo said. ?Last year we had a rough start, but towards the end we got it moving. This year, since we?ve been together we pretty much know what we?ve got to do.?

The Cubs wrap up their series with the Manatees at 6:05 pm Sunday night (5:05 Central) as Mark Holliman takes the mound against Josh Wahpepah.

Daytona Cubs second baseman Nate Spears waits for the referee's call at Jackie Robinson Ballpark Saturday. Brevard Manatees Travis Ezi was called safe.

ONE CAN ONLY DO SO MUCH

The spasmodic change in the weather is not unusual in the South around April. At game time, it was 57°, nearly 30 degrees cooler than it was the previous night, and with the north wind blowing in. Here in Huntsville, the temps dropped from the 70s to the upper 40s. But the forecast, now revised, still sees sunny skies for the home opener, with temps in the low 70s, rather than close to 80°.........

Corey Thurman, a free agent pick-up, made his debut for the Stars tonight, and made our starting rotation this year look good again, striking out two in the 1st inning, then proceeding to pitch four no-hit innings before leaving. Thurman, coming back from rotator cuff surgery, was held to a 75-pitch count........ Both managers shook up their lineup a little. The Stars moved Jeff Eure up in the lineup and started Jean Boscan behind the plate.

The Stars were foiled in their bid to win their 3rd straight game on the road to open the season for the first time since 1999.

Callix Crabbe took advantage of his good speed to get the Stars off to a good start. He hit an opposite field two-run double with one out in the 2nd on a 2-2 pitch from Brady Endl that rolled into the right field corner to score Kennard Bibbs and Ozzie Chavez. That put the Stars ahead, 2-0....... The Stars have now scored first in each of their first three games of the season. That has only happened five other times in club history ---1985, 1987, 1989, 2001 and 2004...... Reliever Bryan Digby, who came in to relieve Endl, walked Ron Acuna to load the bases in the 5th, but Eure hit into a 6-4 force to end the inning. Say goodbye to the Stars' golden chance in this game, and the Braves probably knew it.

Coming in for Thurman in the 5th, Mike Meyers gave up a line drive single to Dax Norris on the first pitch he saw. He went 1-and-1 on the next hitter, Matt Esquivel, who then singled to right....... Carl Loadenthal followed and on the 4th pitch he saw, he lined a ball past a diving infield for a double to right, scoring Norris and sending Esquivel to third. The Braves were on the scoreboard....... Meyers threw three pitches to Josh Arteaga before he drove in the tying run on a ground ball to third baseman Adam Heether. Arteaga hit .248 with the M'Braves last year after a season with the Diamond Jaxx.......... With Loadenthal on third, pinch-hitter Onil Joseph gave the Braves a 3-2 lead by lining a ball up the middle for a hit, scoring Loadenthal......... Gregor Blanco swung at the first pitch he saw, grounding a ball to Chavez, but his throw pulled Eure off the bag, sending Joseph to 2nd ........ Martin Prado then drove the first pitch he saw to Acuna who tried to reach over his head as the ball flew toward the wall, emptying the bases, and giving Mississippi a 5-2 lead.

That was all for Meyers who last year had a 1.71 ERA in 21 relief appearances for the Stars before he was promoted to Nashville on July 19th......... 6'4" Matt Yeatman, who struck out the side in his exhibition appearance against UAH with a very, very good curve ball, came on to make his Huntsville Stars debut and he proceeded to strike out his only hitter, Yunil Escobar. Boscan then turned and threw out Prado trying to steal third, ending the inning.

Yeatman in the 6th quickly found himself in a bases full situation after walking Jarrod Saltalamacchia, giving up a hit to Dax Norris, and hitting Esquivel with a pitch...... He managed to get Loadenthal to fly out to left, but Arteaga sent a 2-1 pitch deep enough this time to Drew Anderson to score the runner from third, making it 6-2. Yeatman struck out Stockman on three pitches to end the inning, but the Braves bullpen was too much for the Stars tonight, holding the Stars to just one hit over five innings to preseve the win.

Ben Sheets is scheduled to make his second rehab start in Nashville, Tuesday night, with a more advanced pitch count --- 75 pitches I heard.
