Brad Nelson, 0-for-7 thus far with four K's, batting 8th today for the Sounds, behind Jermaine Clark and Brent Abernathy -- ouch.

Dennis Sarfate on the mound on his 25th birthday.

Familiar lineup in Huntsville.

Angel Salome still in the lineup, as the DH on his catching day off, down in West Virginia.

Um . . . Dave Welch? I know it's just five innings, but I at least pay attention to anybody who can pitch like that for five innings. 22 years old, fine numbers last season in a few R+ innings, and I completely missed him. What gives? Does anybody know anything about him?

Welch is an Aussie who was attending junior college in Texas.

He was part of the combined Helena no-hitter last summer.

Different note, Nashville taking out some frustration today; Mike Rivera still an extra-base machine, Dennis Sarfate enjoying his birthday, and Brad Nelson goes "boom!" from the eight-hole, proving members of Brewer management geniuses (genei?).

Welch is definitely a true sleeper as a prospect, as there aren't too many players that don't have their very own one-man fan club around these parts. Here's what I wrote about him from my '05 draft recap:

20. David Welch, LHP

4-1, 2.77 ERA in 12 appearances, 26 IP, 21 H, 29 K, 12 BB with Helena

Welch, a native of Australia, is a well-built pitcher at 6'4", 215 pounds, with a live arm and a sturdy frame. He had committed to play for Texas Tech for his junior year of eligibility, but the Brewers were able to sign him away from that commitment to play professionally, and he responded well with the Helena Brewers. Welch earned a few starts later in the season after being used predominantly out of the bullpen, and he may find himself as a piggy-back starter for West Virginia in 2006. Like Patrick Ryan, Welch could be a sleeper to watch next season.

Final: Delmarva (Orioles) 8, West Virginia 7

Horrible, horrible loss -- up 7-3 in the 9th, and Delmarva scores five; then, watch what happens in the Power's last at-bat...hopefully not lost in this is Angel Salome's 5-for-5 monster game -- ten total bases, a triple shy of the cycle...

West Virginia Game Log:

Placing the game log first, because you need to see to believe; we may look back in September and say the organization's worst loss of the year was in the first week...

West Virginia Box Score:

Third baseman Mat Gamel with three errors already; LHP Brandon Parillo's outing so uncharacteristic for him...

Stars Bats Stymied, Again

Yunel Escobar?s two-out, two-run double in the third inning stood up as the decisive hit in Mississippi?s 3-1 victory over the Stars Sunday afternoon at Trustmark Park. The Braves have won the last two games of the series to draw even in the five-game set with the decisive game to be played Monday night.

Braves? catcher Ray Serrano legged out a controversial infield hit as he dived safely into first base to open the home third. Pitcher Chris Waters bunt attempt was fielded by Huntsville hurler Jeff Housman, who threw out Serrano at second for the first out. Martin Prado singled with two outs and Escobar then laced a double to right to chase home both runners to give the Braves the lead and mark the first time they had scored first in the series. The home side added a run in the eighth inning against Andy Pratt on a two-out single by Onil Joseph, who knocked in 13 runs against Huntsville pitching last season.

Two-out singles by Steve Moss, Ron Acuna and Adam Heether loaded the bases for the Stars in the third before Lou Palmisano flied out to end the threat. The visitors broke through in the fifth when Acuna?s ground out plated Drew Anderson, who had tripled. Waters was taken out and replaced by Paul Bush, who retired Heether on a foul pop to end the inning. Bush tossed 2 1/3 scoreless innings in relief to earn the win and square his record at 1-1.

Brad Baker worked a scoreless eighth and Manny Acosta closed out the game with a scoreless ninth to earn the save. The Braves bullpen has blanked the Stars since the sixth inning of Friday night's game, a span of 12 2/3 innings. Huntsville totaled a season-high nine hits but stranded a season-worst 12 runners, including at least one in every inning but the fourth. ?Our hitters are not being selective when we have runners in scoring position. We?re swinging at too many high fastballs, hitting too many balls in the air and it is hard to succeed that way in the conditions we?re playing in,? said manager Don Money.

The five-game set wraps up Monday night with right-hander Khalid Ballouli taking the hill for Huntsville against Mississippi right-hander Daniel Curtis. Coverage of the game begins at 6:50 p.m. central time and can be heard on ESPN Radio 1450 AM locally and via the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com.

Travis Ezi just went deep with a two-run shot, it's 3-0 Manatees in the 6th; Josh Wahpepah dealing on the mound.

Steve Hammond, Yovani Gallardo, Josh Wahpepah -- nice rotation, Mark who? Just kidding, Mr. Rogers. But right now, from a development basis, Yo and Josh are just so much more polished...

Manatees rally in 12th

By BRENT WORONOFF

Daytona News-Journal Staff Writer

DAYTONA BEACH -- With a strong wind blowing in off the Halifax River, Brevard Manatees second baseman Hernan Iribarren wasn't trying to crush the ball with the bases loaded in the top of the 12th inning.

"I was just trying to put the ball in play," he said. "It felt good."

He wound up smacking a Matt Weber pitch over left fielder Nic Jackson's head for a three-run triple to give the Manatees a 7-4 victory over the Daytona Cubs Sunday night at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.

The Manatees (4-0) swept the season-opening series against the Cubs (0-4).

"Every loss is tough," said Daytona manager Don Buford. "But we were in all the ball games. We had a chance in every game."

The Cubs rallied from a 4-0 deficit Sunday to score three runs in the seventh and a run in the eighth with help from some sloppy fielding by the Manatees.

But Daytona left the potential winning run on third base in both the ninth and 10th innings as Jackson hit a triple in the ninth and Issmael Salas hit a double in the 10th and went to third on a sacrifice bunt by shortstop Joe Simokaitis.

Simokaitis, who wielded the Cubs' hottest bat in the series, had an RBI single in the seventh and drove in Jeff Culpepper with the tying run in the eighth. Culpepper, who reached on an error by the third baseman, went four games without a hit for the first time in his pro career.

"The only reason we played extra innings is that we gave them too many outs in the seventh and eighth innings," said Manatees manager Ramon Aviles. "It should have ended in nine."

Seabreeze High graduate Bo Hall was the victim of the Cubs' rally in the seventh, but only one of the runs was earned.

Cubs starter Mark Holliman had a spectacular professional debut, allowing one run on two hits in five innings. The former Ole Miss star struck out seven and walked one.

But his replacement, lefty Carlos Perez, gave up a big home run for the second day in a row. Charlie Fermaint greeted Perez in the sixth with a leadoff single, and Travis Ezi followed with a two-run homer over the left-field wall. After a walk and a groundout, Steve Sollmann's seeing-eye single gave the Manatees a 4-0 lead.

"Carlos walked the first guy and then got behind in the count (to Ezi). When you're not getting pitches over, hitters can sit on that one pitch," Buford said.

In the 12th, Weber gave up two singles and a walk to load the bases with one out. Iribarren, who had a sacrifice fly in the fourth, drove the ball to deep left to clear the bases.
