Bottom of the 4th still 3-0. Yo with 9 K's so far. Mantee's had the bases loaded with 1 out for Parejo last inning but a bad call at first on a double play disallowed the run. The announcers both disagreed with the call.

After 4 innings, Yo has 11 K's. Basically, every out except one has been a K.

EDIT: After reading the game log, apprently Yo K'd a guy and he reached first on a pass ball. So really every out has been a K except two.

three ground outs compared to his one fly out as well...

I really like what Yo does. Any word on how hard he is throwing? I know that in the past he has worked in the 93 mph range. Has he dialed that up at all, or does he have another method of making batters miss? Is it the movement on his pitches that sick, his delivery that deceptive, or is he just hitting his spots like a machine?

edit: changed 1st fly outs to ground outs.

Brevard County Box Score:

Each spot in the lineup, 1-9, reached base exactly once, except for DH Brendan Katin at cleanup, who reached twice -- but 4th and 8th inning opportunities were wasted; in 15.2 IP this season, Yo Gallardo has a K-to-BB ratio of 22-to-5...

Although it's a total of *4* outs.

Yeah, but its part of a pattern of really solid peripherals from Yo. If he is able to pick up his velocity a little bit, he could be one heck of a prospect by the end of the year. Working consistently with a fast ball in the mid-90's and a deceptive delivery could be really effective in the big leagues.

Cardinals blank Manatees

Terry Evans' first-inning three-run blast lifted Palm Beach over Brevard County, 4-0, in the rubber match of their three-game series on Wednesday.

Evans drove in all four runs for the Cardinals (8-5) and continued his dominance against the Manatees this season. The 24-year-old Georgia native added a sacrifice fly in the eighth and is hitting .391 with four homers and 14 RBIs in six games against against Brevard County, compared to .271 with just one RBI in his other seven games.

Blake Hawksworth (2-0) held the Manatees to three hits in six innings and did not allow a run in notching his second win. Mike Sillman came in with two on and two out in the ninth and was able to induce a Carlos Corporan pop-up to earn his third save.

Yovani Gallardo (1-1) surrendered three runs on two hits in five innings in the loss. He was overpowering, however, striking out 12 Cardinals.

The Manatees had two big chances to get on the board, loading the bases in the fourth and eighth innings. But, Freddy Parejo grounded into a double-play to end the fourth and Ryan Braun grounded out to the pitcher to finish the eighth.

Parejo and Braun were two of eight Manatees with a single in the game.

Michael Ferris smacked a pair of doubles for the Cardinals.

Stars Flex Muscle in Win Over Biscuits

Jeff Housman tossed seven sparkling innings and Steve Moss and Jeff Eure hit back-to-back home runs in a five-run fourth inning rally that carried Huntsville past Montgomery 7-1 Wednesday morning and afternoon at Riverwalk Stadium. The Stars have taken three of the first four games in the series to improve to 8-6 overall and 6-3 on the road, while the Biscuits lost for a sixth time in seven games to fall to 7-7 and into a first place tie in the South Division with Birmingham. The Stars have won eight of the last ten games between the two teams since the start of last season.

Elliot Johnson opened the home first inning with a double to extend his hitting streak to eight games, advanced to third on a Wes Bankston single and scored on a base hit by Michael Coleman, who has knocked in a run in three of the four games in the series. Housman got out of further trouble by getting Chairon Isenia to bounce into an inning-ending double play, the first of four turned in the game by Huntsville.

Ron Acuna and Lou Palmisano delivered consecutive one-out singles in the fourth before Moss belted the first pitch he saw from starter Chuck Tiffany over the wall in left field for his first home run and first runs batted in of the season. Eure followed by slamming the next pitch for a home run, his first long ball since Opening Day and his first run batted in since April 10. Kennard Bibbs would score later in the inning to give the Stars a 5-1 edge and their largest scoring inning of the season. Tiffany was knocked out in the fourth and was charged with the loss after giving up all five runs on seven hits and a pair of walks.

Eure delivered a two-out, two-run single in the seventh inning to complete the scoring and knock in three runs in a game for a second time this season. Seven different Stars hitters scored a single run in the game and every batter collected at least one hit, save for Callix Crabbe, who failed to reach base with a hit or walk for the first time in 13 starts.

Housman retired 14 hitters in a row from the second inning into the seventh before Coleman singled with one out. He was erased when Isenia bounced into his second twin-killing of the day. The Huntsville hurler earned his first win of the season by allowing one run on five hits and striking out seven. Housman has fanned seven batters in two of his three starts and has struck out 18 in 18 innings of work so far this year. Steve Bray worked two scoreless frames and ended the game by getting Coleman to bounce into a double play with the bases loaded.

The Stars will send right-hander Khalid Ballouli to the mound on Thursday night in the final game of the series against Biscuits? right-hander Chris Flinn. Coverage of the game begins at 7:05 PM central time and can be heard on ESPN Radio 1450 AM locally and via the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com.

West Virginia Site Game Summary:

Yoho drives in four in win over Hagerstown

Power outfielder Nate Yoho drove in four of West Virginia?s five runs on Wednesday afternoon as the Power went on to beat the Hagerstown Suns 5-4 at Municipal Stadium in Hagerstown, Maryland.

Brad Willcutt hit his first home run of the year, a solo shot in the top of the third inning, to give the Power a 1-0 lead. In the sixth inning the Power opened up a 4-0 advantage on Yoho?s three-run homer, his first blast of the season. Yoho struck again in the top of the eighth inning with a two-out RBI double to give the Power a 5-0 lead.

Nick Evans knocked in Hagerstown?s first run of the game in the bottom of the eighth inning on an RBI double and Hagerstown made things very interesting in the bottom of the ninth inning. The Suns homered twice, and for the second game in a row, they scored three times in the bottom of the ninth. Rafael Arroyo hit a solo shot to make it a 5-2 game and Elvis Cruz hit a two-run homer to pull the Suns within a run, but Hector Pellot grounded out to second base after Cruz?s homerun to end the game.

Will Inman (2-0) pitched three scoreless innings out of the bullpen to earn the victory and Jeff Landing (0-2) obtained the loss. The Power are 6-7 after the win and the Suns fell to 6-7 with the loss.

The Power will continue the four game series against the Suns Thursday night. Right hander Ryan Marion (0-0, 6.75) will start for the Power and the Suns will counter with right hander Sal Aguilar (0-0, 1.80). The first pitch is scheduled for 6:35 PM (5:35 Central).

West Virginia Box Score:

Mat Gamel error # 7 -- an issue at third base? Kenny Holmberg just a joy, on base four more times; 25-year-old Tony Festa doesn't like the Power uniform -- 9-for-81 for West Virginia going back to 2005...

Sounds Come From Behind To Post 9-7 Win

NASHVILLE, Tenn. ? The Nashville Sounds emerged victorious in a see-saw battle against the division-leading Omaha Royals on Wednesday evening at Greer Stadium, posting a come-from-behind 9-7 victory in a game that featured 10 extra-base hits and seven unearned runs.

With the win, Nashville (8-6) pulled within a game of the first-place Royals and picked up its seventh win in its last nine contests.

Sounds starter Dana Eveland, who took a no-decision after allowing five unearned runs in 5.0 innings of work, continued his strong start to the season and lowered his ERA to an impressive 1.06. The southpaw has allowed only two earned runs in 17.0 innings pitched in 2006.

Tony Gwynn (3-for-5) and Chris Barnwell (3-for-4, 2 2B) paced the Sounds? 11-hit attack with three hits apiece.

Nashville runners were active on the basepaths, swiping five bases in five attempts to increase their Pacific Coast League-leading total to 30 swipes in 14 games.

The Sounds struck first, taking a 1-0 lead when Nelson Cruz scored on Brad Nelson?s bases-loaded, double-play groundout in the bottom of the second inning.

Nashville increased the lead to 4-0 with a three-run third against Omaha starter Runelvys Hernandez. Barnwell extended his hitting streak to seven games, matching the club?s longest of the season, when he led off the inning with a double. Gwynn drove him in with an RBI single to right to up the lead to 2-0. The knock extended the outfielder?s season-best hit streak to six games.

After a Jermaine Clark double, Corey Hart (1-for-4), in his second at-bat since joining the club, drove an RBI single to left to score Gwynn from third. The final run of the frame came in on a Vinny Rottino RBI groundout.

Omaha rallied to grab a 5-4 lead in the top of the fourth with five unearned runs off Eveland, all stemming from a dropped fly ball by rightfielder Nelson Cruz that should have ended a scoreless inning.

With two on and two down, Ricky Bell lifted a fly ball down the right field line that hit Cruz square in the glove but the ball fell to the turf, allowing both runners to score. Eveland then surrendered three consecutive RBI doubles to Mike Aviles, Andres Blanco, and Kerry Robinson as the visitors grabbed the lead.

The Sounds rallied to take a 9-5 lead with five runs in the bottom of the sixth. With one down, Nelson singled, stole second, and moved to third on Mark Johnson?s single, which chased Hernandez. Omaha reliever David Elder was greeted by back-to-back run-scoring doubles by Barnwell, his second two-bagger of the contest, and Gwynn, who broke a 5-5 tie by bringing home Johnson and Barnwell with his third knock of the night.

After Jermaine Clark drew a walk, he and Gwynn executed a double steal then both players scored on the play following a throwing error by catcher Paul Phillips and a fielding error by third baseman Mike Aviles.

Justin Huber and Phillips belted back-to-back one-out solo homers off Sounds reliever Mike Meyers in the top of the eighth inning to pull within 9-7. Huber?s blast was his team-leading sixth of the year and second in two games this series. Phillips? longball was his second of the season.

Meyers (1-0) picked up the victory in his initial 2006 outing with the Sounds. He allowed two runs on four hits, including two home runs, in 2 2/3 frames. Hernandez (1-2) took the loss after being tagged for six runs on eight hits in 5 1/3 innings of work.

Jared Fernandez made his Sounds debut by working the final 1 1/3 innings in perfect fashion, adding two strikeouts, to earn his first save since the 2002 season when he pitched for Louisville (AAA-Reds).

The clubs continue the series with a 7 p.m. Thursday meeting, the first Thirsty Thursday of the season at Greer Stadium. Right-hander Dennis Sarfate (0-0, 5.40) toes the rubber for the Sounds to face Omaha right-hander Brian Bass (0-1, 6.55).

Double steal helps Sounds nab victory

Swipe a total of five off Omaha pitchers to lead PCL with 30

By MIKE ORGAN

Tennessean Staff Writer

The Sounds stole one from Omaha last night.

Nashville pulled off a double steal in the seventh inning and had a total of five steals in a 9-7 victory.

A Greer Stadium crowd of 2,737 watched the Sounds rally after falling behind 5-4 in the sixth inning with a gutsy play by Tony Gwynn and Jermaine Clark.

Nashville knotted it at 5-5 when Chris Barnwell's double scored Brad Nelson. Gwynn's double scored Mark Johnson and Barnwell, making it 7-5.

Clark walked, giving the Sounds two men on base. With just one out and Corey Hart at the plate, Gwynn and Clark both started to run. Second baseman Kerry Robinson let the throw sail past him and Clark headed for third.

Third baseman Mike Aviles then mishandled another throw, allowing Clark and Gwynn to both score. Suddenly Nashville, which led 4-0 after three innings, was in front 9-5.

It was part of the aggressive style of play Manager Frank Kremblas has stamped on the Sounds. After last night, Nashville now has more steals (30, in 38 attempts) than any team in the Pacific Coast League.

"If the guys pay attention a little bit they can get some good jumps on some guys and take advantage of some breaking ball pitches that are in the dirt like (Chris) Barnwell did,'' Kremblas said. "I wouldn't necessarily call our style gambling, I mean we're paying attention to what the other team is doing and trying to take advantage of it.''

Last night's five steals was one shy of a season-high for Nashville.

Kremblas said his players quickly bought into his style and that's why they have a green light to steal so often.

"You can't have any hesitation, if you're going to steal you can't have any worried about pickoffs or getting thrown out or things like that,'' Kremblas said. "These guys aren't like that at all.''

Omaha got back-to-back homers from their first two batters in the eighth. Justin Huber smashed one over the right field wall, then Paul Phillips cleared the left field wall cutting Nashville's lead to 9-7.

***

Outfielder Corey Hart, the Sounds 2005 MVP, wasted no time returning to Nashville after being sent down by Milwaukee Tuesday.

Hart joined right-handed pitcher Jared Fernandez yesterday from the Brewers and right-hander Mike Meyers from Huntsville as newcomers for the Sounds.

Hart batted third last night, going 1-for-4 after a marathon trek to get here. He was in Houston with the Brewers Tuesday, flew back to Milwaukee that night, hit the road soon thereafter and made the 10-hour drive to Nashville.

Hart was at Greer yesterday in time for batting practice. With his second at-bat Hart hit a single to left field to score Tony Gwynn, giving the Sounds a 3-0 lead.

Streaks alive: Chris Barnwell extended his hitting streak to seven with a double in the third. Tony Gwynn extended his hitting streak to six with an RBI single to right field in the same inning.

Another double: Barnwell's double was the Sounds' 28th of the season, which ranks second among PCL clubs.

What they said: "We've got a little more power, another guy that can steal some bases and plays aggressive. He runs the bases aggressively and is a smart base runner, which is always nice to have." ? Sounds Manager Frank Kremblas said of leftfielder Corey Hart, who rejoined the team.

A TWO-PITCH VICTORY

Jeff Housman was the old Jeff Housman from 2004 (at least May and July when he was 4-3 with a 1.74 ERA)...... Housman was sparkling, throwing 40 pitches in the first three innings, going seven innings on his way to his first win.

Housman had support from everywhere........ After trailing 1-0 in a shaky 1st, the Stars came up with their largest rally of the year -- five runs in the 4th inning, highlighted by Steve Moss's three-run HR to left, snapping an 0-for-13 slump at the plate on the first pitch he saw, and a follow-up HR by Jeff Eure on the next pitch...... That made the score 4-1....... The Stars now have hit eight HRs -- 5th best in the league....... The Stars last year didn't have that many until 21 games into the season........ The Stars are now 8-6 and have won five of their last six.

A passed ball by Chiaron Isenia with the bases loaded scored Kennard Bibbs with the 5th run...... Isenia made eight errors in 57 games behind the plate last year. The three catchers in the Southern League who had as many or more errors last year, played in more games........ Eure's two-out, two-run single off Yorkin Ferreras in the 7th completed the scoring for the Stars.

The Stars and Housman benefited also from four DPs, the most since June 26 of last year in a 12-5 loss to Jacksonville........ The first stopped a rally with runners on first and second when Isenia hit into a 6-4-3. He hit into another one in a rather harmless 7th inning. With the bases loaded, Michael Coleman hit into the one that ended the game........ To all the help Housman and Stephen Bray got, let's add the eight walks the Stars received, giving them a season-total of 62, most in the league.

Nearly 7,000, mostly youngsters, filled the park on another School Kids day for Montgomery, so it was another 10 AM start that I missed while I was still in bed....... Got up just in time to hear Greg Sain fly out to center to end that big rally. Housman was in total control, retiring the Biscuits in order in the 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th innings, in fact 14 straight batters until Coleman's infield single in the 7th....... The rare muscle flexing of 12 hits is only the 2nd time in 14 games the Stars have collected 10 or more hits in a game. That raises their team batting average from .217 to .225........

For the 2nd time in five appearances this year, Bray pitched scoreless relief........ The only one who didn't have a good day was Callix Crabbe, who wore the golden sombrero and then some, going 0-for-6. Everyone else who went to the plate for the Stars had a hit....... Bibbs got his average at the Mendoza line (.200) for the first time. Ozzie Chavez had his 5th two-hit game of the season, raising his average to .280. Sain hit safely in his 6th straight game with a leadoff single in the 2nd inning....... But no one had gone 0-for-6 since four players against Mobile in a marathon 19-inning game last year -- Jeff Winchester, Ben Van Iderstine, Vinny Rottino, and Brad Nelson. Rottino went hitless in seven trips and Nelson in eight.

The finale at Riverwalk Stadium takes place at 7:05 Thursday night with Khalid Ballouli (1-0) facing Chris Flinn (0-1)....... The Stars shelled Flinn in his only start against them, July 31st of last year -- eight runs on ten hits in just 1 2/3 innings en route to an 11-3 win for Glenn Woolard.

Pitcher Mike Meyers has been promoted to Nashville in the first transaction of the season. Meyers was 1-1 with a 6.75 ERA in four appearances in relief for the Stars, but unscored upon in his last two covering 2 1/3 innings...... Filling the roster spot will be southpaw pitcher Russ Rohlicek, who was signed by the Brewers on April 5th. Rohlicek was originally signed by the Astros. He was traded to the Cubs with Mike Nannini and Travis Anderson for Tom Gordon, August 2002 and if the name sounds familiar, it's because he spent time with the West Tennessee Diamond Jaxx in 2003 and 2004. He appeared in 60 games in 2004 with a 5-5 record and impressive 2.09 ERA. He gave up a few too many walks for my taste (5.48 per 9 IP), but held Southern League batters to a .175 average........ Meyers got the win in relief for Nashville in his first game since his promotion, Wednesday night against Omaha. The Sounds beat Omaha, 9-7, with Tony Gwynn, Jr. going 3-for-5 with a double and three RBIs. Junior is hitting .291 for the Sounds so far....... Elsewhere on the farm, Yovani Gallardo struck out 12 in five innings for Brevard County in a 4-0 loss to Palm Beach, Wednesday. Gallardo (1-1, 2.30), who we may see before the season is done, is the Brewers' 4th-ranked prospect in the organization according to Baseball America.

The New Jersey Jackals of the independent Can-Am League have signed Jason Belcher. Jason hit .289 for the Stars in 47 games in 2004, then was traded with Jason Childers to the Montreal Expos for outfielder Pete Bergeron on June 6. He was released by the Washington Nationals before the season started. Belcher was dropped to Class A-Potomac (Carolina) last year after going 5-for-41 at Class AA-Harrisburg (East.) With Potomac in 55 games, he hit .250..... Thanks to brewerfan.net for some interesting updates on some former players.
