It's not over yet people.

dvoiss

There are a lot of threads running saying that we should essentially concede the division to our rivals from the south. I for one am not ready to do so.

I have to admit it doesn't look good right now but we are still in first place and there are two months to go. Heck the season is only 2 thirds done. Am I optimistic? No. I just want to remind everyone that this thing is not over yet.

This, as the last week has shown, is a strange game and anything can happen. So while I am clearly in the minority on this I will not give up hope until there is no hope. And with 50+ games remaining anything can still happen.

I totally agree with you 100% -- everything is magnified with us slumping and the cubs having caught us. If we hadn't gotten out to that good start, this would not be as traumatic as it is to some people.

I too, agree 100% with you!!! I mean there is 1/3 of the season left. It's been a roler coaster wwith peaks and valleys. We are just in one of those valleys, and the Scrubs are at the peak. It wont stay like that for long. I have a real good fealing about the upcoming homestand, albeit a very tough homestand i think we'll take 5 outta 6 and things will be looking good once again!!!

The Brewers have been horrid on the road since early May. If they don't play at least .500 on the road, they have to make up the difference at home, and I don't see them winning 8 out of 9 on every home stand for the remainder of the year.

A wise man once said doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result is lunacy. Well, we have a pattern here, that needs to be addressed, but this team is as poor on the road as last year's team was. The thing is, I'm not sure how you fix something like that... maybe stay in different hotels, change the routine... something about being on the road doesn't work, that's about all I know.

Of course it's not over. . .But it's terribly frustrating! This makes me understand just a little bit how it felt to be a fan of the Phillies in 1964.

This is a terrible post-All-Star-Break skid (something we've experienced countless times before)--but now it really means something--and every single day brings more bad news.

And then to top it all off, it's the stinkin' Cubs who are applying the pressure. It's infuriating!!!!!

Am I optimistic? No.

This struck me as funny as I was reading this post hoping for an uplifting message. I'm not making fun or being sarcastic--I just thought this was funny.

When all was well, a friend of mine was all giddy and I was not sharing in his giddiness. He asked me when I would believe that this was the year. I answered, "When they're 3 games up with 2 to go." The same holds true if I was asked when I thought the season was over.

Strap in and hang on. I have a feeling that no matter what happens, this is gonna be a bumpy ride!

The reason I started this threads is because when I logged in tonight it was like visiting a morgue. I felt a thread like this was needed to give people hope. Had I said I was optimistic, given how this road trip went, I would have been seen as a fool(and rightfully so).

Right now I'm not optimistic but next Sunday I may be. There is however a difference between being pessimistic and giving up hope, as so many were doing. That was the point I was trying to make with this thread.

I wasn't picking on your post or your thread. I know what you meant. The title just looked optimistic and that part made me laugh--that's a good thing. I needed a laugh today http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif

You're right, though. I have a feeling this roadtrip will empty the bandwagon a bit but you can't jump ship just cause of a skid. I've read it here and many other places that things are never as good as you think when they're going well and vice versa. Even keel. Fairways and greens. Be the ball.

Please don't take offense to my quote--none was intended. You made a good point and I agree with you. There's been enough chippiness around here lately and I certainly am not looking to contribute to that--especially on a post that is not predicting doomsday.

It's a long season. If the Crew wins their next 2 or 3, everyone will be cheering them on again. There's still plenty of games left and as everyone says, anything can happen.

My concern is this: I don't think the Cubs are on a hot streak right now. I think they finally figured it out and they are going to play this way the rest of the year. Playing this good for this long isn't a hot streak, it's the sign of a good ballclub-something we do not have at the moment.

I'm still excited for the rest of the season because it could always be like the last 14 seasons-under .500 or not really in contention. We're still in the thick of it kids, lets not forget that.

The Cubs are a good ball club, but they will not be able to sustain the .718 (23-9) ball they've played since June 22. The Cubs will falter at some point and the Brewers must get hot. They're finding ways to lose ball games right now.

On top of that, the Cubs have been slightly lucky in that time period. Their Pythagorean win expectancy has them at a .653 winning percentage, which would amount to a 20-12 record in that time.

I'm going to gauge by the response of Brewer Nation this season that I might be the only person who hasn't felt any different during this season compared to seasons past. To me, it just feels like another year because I can completely forget about the Brewers record when they play a game and concentrate on today's game. Maybe I've been listening to too many Ned Yost Even Keel Inspirational cassette tapes or something. Maybe once it becomes mid August I'll feel some urgency with this team and the race, but as for right now, I just want to win the game we play each day.

The Cubs have a .741 OPS during their hot streak and a .685 OPS against, its mostly a product of their pitching pitching way over its head and not the offense at all.

Over that same timeframe we have a .792 OPS and a .720 OPS against. We have been extremely unlucky to lose more than a game or two to them, every bounce is going their way and we are losing all the tough games.

Read what you will into that but it seems highly likely that luck has had as much to do wtih things as some mystic mojo working against us. The same bad luck that saw the Cubs way underperform their expected results earlier in the year.

So your belief is the Cubs aren't really playing that much better baseball than us the last month or so,it's mostly just luck that has them winning games and us losing games?

I watch pretty much every Brewers games and see alot of Cubs games and do believe in general more "breaks" are going their way,but they definately are playing better than early in the year and we aren't.Besides Zambrano getting on track, late in games their bullpen guys aren't doing nearly as much dumb crap like walking guys and then hanging sliders or grooving fastballs down the middle to get hit hard which was losing them close games.Their bullpen was doing was ours is now. They were making all kinds of baserunning blunders to kill innings like early on and just not playing good fundamental baseball overall, all kinds of mistakes killing them in close games.

Alot of baseball games are decided by a run or two.A raw OPS for/against stat doesn't account for whether a pitcher makes a great or bad pitch in a tie game late to get out of an inning or instead gives up a hit that swings the game the other way.Does the hitter get that big base hit to drive in a few runs instead of weakly pop out to end an inning.Right now they are doing these things better than us along with just pitching great.

A change in luck will help, but it's gonna have to be more than that from what i'm seeing of both teams. In sports and baseball you can create alot of your own luck by executing. Not hanging sliders like Cordero has so bards aren't hit as hard,we won't need as much luck to hope they find a glove.Turnbow hitting the corners instead of the center of the plate, where balls are more easily centered and less likely to be just popped out or rolled over on the ground.

I understand stats paint a pretty good general picture of things, but just punching in certain numbers won't ever spit out a teams record.A double with nobody on in the fifth inning of a 4 run game counts the same in a team OPS as Rolen's off Cordero, even though the impact isn't remotely close.

This was the exact same thing said by many Cub fans earlier in the season. The only differance? It was the other team making all the boneheaded mistakes and not getting any breaks. As has been said all along these things have a way of evening themselves out.

There needs to be a King Thames version of the bible.

I beg to differ. It is over.

The Brewers will not be going to the playoffs. Here's my thinking.

They are played out. A young team that must learn to win at the major league level and hasn't. While there are always anomalies, good teams in general are not miserable on the road. I take it that this is proof that they are unmotivated or worse simply untalented. Any team that can't perform simply because they are outside their comfort zone is a team in trouble. I see a team that had a good run, had a taste of first place, but will fade badly the rest of the year.

Cappy and Suppan and Bush have been major disappointments in my book. 3/5s of our rotation kinda sucks in that they are inconsistent. inconsistent is synonymous (sic) with losing. Vargas has got to be the luckiest pitcher I've see in a while--I'll take it. Sheets continues to get hurt. In true Brewer fashion I'm sure the next team he plays for will be DL free. It's been our curse with decent pitchers since Teddy and probably before that.

We stink in leftfield, are struggling in centerfield, and are adequate in rightfield. Fielder's done. I'm confident he can keep his average in the .270 to .290 range but I'm guessing the long ball won't be back in force. He's fat and outta shape and it's taking a toll. Weeks. I hope it's the injury and not that he's lost all confidence as has been suggeted elsewhere. It's been a wasted year at 2nd base and if we are serious about being a playoff team next year we'll need a major upgrade here.

J.J. is back to form. Good defense, hurt a lot, no power--he's had his career year. Bravo for him. I like the way he plays. Braun is Braun, who could ask for more.

Catcher is a real problem and Doug is going to have to find a replacement. The guy is a millstone around the offense and defense.

The bullpen is a shambles. Say what you want, pull out all the stats you want, but it is haggard, and pressing, and it'll continue to screw up. Cordero is gone. Linebrink, if he's got a brain, will sign elsewhere. Turnbow is Turnbow. meaning there's no long term winning with him. He'll stay hot till he implodes and then the rest of the season will be 50/50.

It's a long season and the Brew Crew had their run. It was enjoyable and exciting.

It's really a shame that this site punishes and suspends posters who stick up for the team and manager, while hurting other poster's feelings by being "condenscending"......

But they allow trash like this. This is an embarassing post. I'm embarassed to be considered in the same fan base as this crap. It's sick.

2007 Milwaukee Brewers...These are your fans. Giving you 100% support through and through....oh wait.

What a joke. It's a travesty that people get banned/reprimanded for disagreeing with people on this board, but yet people are allowed to take absolute below the belt shots at players (who for all we know read the board) and the mods look the other way.

Posts like these remind me why I hate fickle fans who never see any optimism.

You don't think they players know it was a rough week? They don't need to hear you take shots at a young and very exciting FIRST PLACE team the way you just did. That post made me puke in my mouth and swallow it. Thanks for that anyways.
