In Progress, 4th Inning: Brevard County 7, Jupiter (Marlins) 1

Ryan Braun walked and went deep, Travis Ezi 2-for-3 with a triple, Hurricane 2-for-2... lots of other good lines for the Manatees batters, too. Steve Hammond has fanned three and has yet to walk a batter.

Hernan goes 4 for 5. He is just a singles machine.
"Dustin Pedroia doesn't have the strength or bat speed to hit major-league pitching consistently, and he has no power......He probably has a future as a backup infielder if he can stop rolling over to third base and shortstop." Keith Law, 2006

Final: Brevard County 13, Jupiter 1

Brevard County Box Score:

Ryan Braun goes deep with two on against Hammerheads starter Gaby Hernandez, one of the many high profile arms the Marlins received this past offseason during fire sale #2. Hernan Iribarren goes 4 for 5 with a double. Plenty of nice offensive numbers to appreciate in this one, mirroring the big-league Brewers day, while Hammond tries his best to mirror David Bush' efforts by giving up only one run in 6.2 innings.

The Power scored early and often and never trailed in the game, beating the Legends 7-3.

Tony Festa drove in the first run of the game with an RBI single in the top of the second inning. The Power plated three runs in the top of the fourth inning to take a 4-0 lead. Ned Yost singled into center field with two outs scoring Ryan Crew, and the center fielder Josh Flores bobbled the ball, allowing Tony Festa to score, and Yost to reach third. Yost scored during the next at bat on a passed ball. In the bottom of the fifth inning Lexington scored their first run on a solo shot from Ryan Reed, his first of the year. Lorenzo Cain dropped an RBI single in to center field, scoring Ned Yost in the top of the seventh inning to give the Power a 5-1 lead. The Power added two more in the top of the ninth inning on a solo shot from Ned Yost, his second of the year and Mat Gamel brought in the final run with a Sac Fly RBI. In the bottom of the ninth inning Eli Iorg smacked a two run homer, his first of the year, but it was too little and too late for the Legends.

Final: Mobile 4, Huntsville 0

Huntsville Box Score:

The Stars get carved up by Padres 2005 first-round pick Cesar Carrillo tonight. Carlos Villanueva didn't pitch bad at all, with 8 Ks and 1 BB in 5 innings of work, giving up two earned runs. Heether, Crabbe, Anderson, Moss and Palmisano are all better than their numbers, so let's hope for them to catch up and start to make things even out soon.

Carrillo Carries BayBears to Victory

Cesar Carrillo tossed seven scoreless innings and knocked in a run to lead Mobile to a 4-0 win Saturday night at Joe Davis Stadium in the opener of a five-game series. The BayBears squared their road record at 3-3 and improved to 7-9 overall, while the Stars dropped to 8-8 overall and 2-4 at home. Huntsville has been shut out three times at home and has scored only 14 runs on home soil in 54 innings.

George Kottaras broke up a scoreless game with a leadoff home run in the fourth inning against Carlos Villanueva. The second-rated prospect in the San Diego organization by Baseball America is now 12-for-28 with two home runs and eight runs batted in over seven games in Huntsville. Steve Baker, Drew Macias and Luis Cruz strung together three straight singles with one out to produce the second run of the inning.

Stars? starter Carlos Villanueva was taken out after five innings during which he gave up a pair of runs on five hits and a walk. He struck out a season-high eight but suffered the loss to fall to 2-2 on the season. He has given up nine earned runs on 14 hits in nine innings in two starts at home and has tossed 11.2 scoreless frames on the road.

Mobile tacked on two more runs in the sixth inning on a run-scoring double by Baker and Carrillo?s run-producing infield hit. Huntsville pitcher Alec Zumwalt should have been out of the inning with only one run scoring but a shallow fly ball off the bat of Fernando Valenzuela was not caught for what would have been the third out, allowing Carillo to come to the plate and help his own cause.

The Mobile right-hander allowed three singles, walked one and struck out five to earn his first win of the year. The Padres number-one rated prospect threw 87 pitches and kept the Huntsville hitters off balance throughout the game. Leo Rosales and Geoff Jones each threw a scoreless inning in relief. Greg Sain was the only Stars? runner to reach third base and did so in the ninth inning after singling, stealing second base and moving up on a base hit by Steve Moss. He was left there when Lou Palmisano struck out to end the game.

The series continues with a doubleheader on Sunday to make up for Friday night?s rain out. The BayBears will send right-handers Jared Wells and Bubba Nelson to the hill and the Stars will counter with right-handers Tim Dillard and Corey Thurman. Coverage of the twin bill begins at 12:50 p.m. central time and can be heard locally on ESPN Radio 1450 AM and via the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com.

Hunstville could certainly use a couple of those Brevard county bats. The Huntsville has an OPS of .642.

Sollman is mashing in his second stint with Brevard County. Hopefully, he'll get bumped up when Richardson returns.

Final: Nashville 5, Oklahoma 3

Nashville Box Score:

A come from behind effort for the Sounds, who ties the game in the 7th, and win it in the 9th. Tony Gwynn and Mike Rivera with 3 hits a piece. Enrique Cruz with the big go-ahead RBI in the 9th. Zach Jack with a decent, not great start, while Kershner, Evert, Stetter and Simpson hold the Redhawks scoreless over the final four frames to keep the Sounds in the game.

Sounds Keep Rolling, Post 5-3 Last At-Bat Win

OKLAHOMA CITY -- The Nashville Sounds plated five runs over the final three innings to record a come-from-behind 5-3 victory over the Oklahoma RedHawks on Saturday night at AT&T Bricktown Ballpark in the opener of a four-game series.

The win was the first-place Sounds' fourth in a row and tenth in their last 12 games.

After former Sound John Wasdin held Nashville scoreless for six innings as Oklahoma built a 3-0 lead, the RedHawks bullpen didn't achieve the same success.

Nelson Cruz led off the seventh with his team-leading eighth double of the year, off Oklahoma reliever Kelvin Jimenez. With one out, Mike Rivera (3-for-4) singled him home to put the Sounds on the board. Chris Barnwell plated Rivera later in the frame with a sacrifice fly before Enrique Cruz delivered a two-out RBI double to knot the score at 3-3.

Nashville took its first lead of the contest in the top of the ninth against Oklahoma reliever Kevin Walker. Rivera led off the frame with a single and was replaced by pinch-runner Dave Krynzel. After Krynzel was erased on a Brad Nelson fielder's choice, Barnwell singled to put two aboard for Enrique Cruz, who delivered a go-ahead RBI single to right to give the Sounds a 4-3 lead. Tony Gwynn (3-for-5) plated an insurance run with a single of his own.

Sounds reliever Mitch Stetter (2-2) picked up the victory after tossing 1 1/3 scoreless frames. Allan Simpson worked a scoreless bottom of the ninth to earn his first save of the year. Walker (0-1) took the loss after surrendering the go-ahead run.

Zach Jackson took a no-decision for Nashville in his third start of the year. He allowed three runs on eight hits while striking out four batter in his five innings of work.

The teams continue the series with a 2:05 p.m. matinee on Sunday afternoon. Right-hander Ben Hendrickson (1-0, 2.08) takes the hill for the Sounds to face Oklahoma right-hander Edinson Volquez (2-1, 3.86).

Send Hernan to AA

Holmberg to High A (he deserves to be at High A anyway)

Al---

I don't know that Ned IV will make it to AA...He's not projectable..He's a good ballplayer...but i doubt he develops a whole lot more than he has already...he's old for low a

The whole pitching depth development strategy looks to be working out very nicely. Even on a bad night the link report typically features two starters who have real hopes of pitching in the bigs someday, and it's common for all four games to feature legit pitching prospects (bearing in mind hat there is, of course, no such thing). So far their performances in the aggregate have been strong. We have good reason to hope that the pitching pipeline will flow reasonably well over the next several years.

INTO THE NIGHT

Sometimes you get the bear, but more often, the bear gets you........ The bear was Cesar Carrillo, Mobile's top minor league prospect, and it wasn't hard to see why....... While Carrillo did not strike out as many as Carlos Villanueva, he worked his sharp-breaking curve and 93 mph fast ball in and out around the plate, rarely falling behind hitters, and constantly holding the Stars to the infield, getting 13 infield outs in 7 innings, in addition to striking out 5........ Callix Crabbe and Drew Anderson were both forced out on easy grounders to the left side in the 1st and 2nd innings and only once, in the 6th, did a Stars runner reach 3rd, and that was on a fielder's choice. Carrillo retired the side in order in the 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 7th innings. The Stars threatened to score in the 9th off reliever Geoff Jones, after Greg Sain lined a one-out single to right and stole 2nd on the first pitch to Anderson, who struck out........ Steve Moss lined a single to left, but manager Don Money, wisely with Lou Palmisano on deck, held Sain to third. Looking for the big pitch, Palmisano fouled a ball deep to left, but foul, then struck out swinging to end the game....... Carrillo's 5 Ks matched a season high for him.

Villanueva struck out 8 batters, a season-high for him, and the team as a whole finished with a season-high of 12, but one pitch is all it took for Mobile to win behind Mobile's sharp threesome of Carrillo, Rosales (who throws some good heat), and the sidearmer Geoff Jones....... George Kottaras, San Diego's #2 prospect, yanked a 1-2 pitch deep to right, toward the trees some 380 feet away for a 1-0 lead...... Later than inning, three consecutive one-out singles brought in another run for a 2-0 lead....... In the 6th inning, Steve Baker's double to the 405 marker in dead center field brought in Brett Bonvechio, who lead off with a walk.

It was nice to see 'em fill up the ballpark tonight....... Of course, it took a giveaway, but it's nice just the same........ Young and old entered the stadium with a camouflage Huntsville Stars baseball cap, a new item this year. Pretty nice, I must say, but having rival Channel 31's logo on the side doesn't much appeal to me......... Two groups from Redstone Arsenal, watched over by their drill sergeants, one from Bravo company and the other, larger one, from Charlie company had a rowdy good time in the upper deck and I'm glad to see that....... Too bad they couldn't wear the matching caps, but that wouldn't have pleased the sergeants in their smokey bear hats too well, but their voices made the stadium come alive for once. Usually, the players joke about being able to hear cell phones go off during a game........ The 6,476 in attendance was welcome after the disappointment of Friday's rainout and what should have been a big turnout for fireworks Friday and especially, the Family Fun Fest......... That game will be made up tomorrow with a double-header, the first game starting at 1:05 pm......... Tim Dillard and Corey Thurman will start for the Stars against Jared Wells and Bubba Nelson...... Nelson pitched last year in the Southern League All-Star game for Chattanooga....... Wells was the Padres' Minor League Pitcher of the Year last season and a member of the Padres' 40-man roster.

Well for the time being it certainly looks like the Sounds are trying their best to give Doug "problems" for next year. If TG keeps up with his new found power spike and Krynzel doesn't fade that's 4 OFs and both Rottino and Enrique Cruz are knocking on the door as utility players that can hit. The pitching situation is far too chaotic, but there could certainly be pressure their too. I predict widespread disagreement with so many similarily qualified players competing and some good Brewerfan threads.

Miscellaneous quotes on West Virginia RHP Kevin Roberts, who pitched well in the Power's win on Saturday:

Roberts (2-1) held the Legends to a run ? Ryan Reed?s homer ? on three hits over five innings. He struck out seven and walked two.

?He threw well against us in West Virginia,? Legends Manager Jack Lind said. ?He did today. Kept his pitches down.?

?He?s mixing his pitches pretty good,? Power Manager Mike Guerrero said. ?The location, breaking ball and changeup. And the location on his fastball was pretty good.?

Former Cincinnati Reds General Manager Dan O'Brien, who's now the Brewers' assistant general manager, is in attendance in Lexington for the Power series.

Mobile's Carrillo leaves Huntsville starry-eyed

By PAUL GATTIS

Huntsville Times Sports Staff, pgattis@htimes.com

For the record, a season-high crowd of 6,476 showed up at Joe Davis Stadium on Saturday night.

But how many will claim to have been there in, say, five years when Cesar Carrillo is a star for the San Diego Padres?

Yeah, I was there that night early in the season in '06 when Carrillo was pitching for Mobile and he so effortlessly shut down the Huntsville Stars that I'm not sure he even broke a sweat.

Indeed, Carrillo is one of those guys with a future of dreams and you couldn't help but see it as he pitched the BayBears to a 4-0 victory. The top minor league prospect for the parent club Padres, Carrillo (1-0) is expected to perhaps be in the major leagues before the season is over.

Carrillo pitched seven shutout innings, flashing a mid-90s fastball and throwing his breaking ball for strikes pretty much whenever he wanted.

A week shy of his 22nd birthday, Carrillo allowed three hits while striking out five and walking just one. But if he had pitched seven hitless innings, it couldn't have been more impressive.

He even knocked in a run with an infield single in the sixth inning.

It was just the 16th game of Carrillo's professional career since being a first-round draft pick last year out of the University of Miami (Fla.). In five starts last year for Mobile, Carrillo was 4-0 with opposing hitters batting .204 against him.

"He threw his fastball over and when he got behind, he threw his breaking ball over behind in the count," Stars manager Don Money said. "He went right after our guys. He threw his breaking ball when he was behind in the count. When he does that, he is usually successful."

The Stars' best scoring opportunity was countered by Carrillo's best pitching. In the sixth inning, pinch-hitter Jeff Eure led off with a single and Kennard Bibbs followed with a walk. But then Carrillo struck out Callix Crabbe, got a fielder's choice from Adam Heether and struck out Greg Sain to end the inning.

"He threw breaking balls on 3-2 counts," Money said. "Our guys stood there like they had never seen it before."

Mobile took a 1-0 lead in the fourth when George Kottaras - rated the Padres' second-best prospect - homered to right off Stars starter Carlos Villanueva (2-2). The BayBears added another run later in the inning on a run-scoring single by Luis Cruz.

In the sixth, Mobile made it 3-0 when Brett Bonvechio walked against reliever Alec Zumwalt and scored on a Steve Baker double.

The BayBears made it 4-0 after a short fly ball to center field fell between three Stars.

That put runners at first and third and Carrillo knocked in a run with a dribbler in front of the plate.

"Any of the three could have caught the ball," an exasperated Money said.

If there's any consolation, though, it wouldn't have mattered against Carrillo.

What they said: "I am sure his confidence level coming in was not good. The important thing is he got it done." ? Sounds Manager Frank Kremblas, on pitcher Allan Simpson who got the save after blowing his previous two chances.
