LHP Craig Breslow had his contract purchased from Double-A Mobile by the Padres today and made his Major League debut. In an inning and two-thirds, the 24-year old allowed a hit and a walk and fanned three. Here's his play-by-play:

[Eighth Inning]

- Jason Michaels struck out swinging.

- Jimmy Rollins struck out swinging

- Kenny Lofton grounded out to shortstop.

[Ninth Inning]

- Chase Utley grounded out to second.

- Bobby Abreu walked.

- Pat Burrell singled to left, Abreu to second.

- Ryan Howard struck out looking.

(Linebrink relieved him and retired David Bell)

Not bad, eh? Not exactly an easy introduction to the big leagues... those are some pretty big name guys.

Congratulations, Craig!

"Former major leaguer Steve Sparks ended his 18 1/2-year pitching career when he retired last week as a member of the Class AAA Sacramento River Cats. The knuckleballer, who was drafted by Milwaukee in the fifth round in 1987, was 7-5 with a 5.92 ERA in 15 games split between Portland and the River Cats. Sparks finished his career with a 59-76 mark and a 4.88 ERA in 270 games split between Milwaukee, Anaheim, Detroit, Oakland and Arizona."

Boston's Alejandro Machado might have scored the most unique "first career run" in the history of baseball.

Many of you probably saw Gabe Kapler tear his Achilles as the lead runner on Tony Graffanino's home run Wednesday night.

When Kapler could not complete his jaunt around the bases, former Brewer farmhand Machado pinch-ran for him and trotted home in Kapler's stead.

It was Machado's first career run scored.

2000 7th round RHP Gerry Oakes has been brutally ineffective during all his minor league stops, but he keeps finding work. Traded to Minnesota as part of the Matt Kinney / Javier Valentin deal, Oakes found a home with Atlanta after a stint in independent ball. The Rangers are the latest organization to take a flyer on him, according to Baseball America. Nice agent...

Javy Valentin is looking sweet for the Reds right now -- the Crew traded him (out of options) to Tampa Bay for Jason Conti -- ouch...

You'd be inundated if I posted all the independent league alumni news, but it's likely catcher Jeremy Frost has old friends who read this forum, and this news on both he and RHP Matt Hammons is positive in that are both doing particularly well (in the independent ranks, anyway):

Wow, talk about a long and winding road -- remember this?

June 13, 2000:

Milwaukee Brewers: Acquired RHP Matt Parker and C Eliezer Alfonzo from St. Louis as the two players to be named in the Fernando Viña deal.

From Rotoworld today as the San Francisco Giants finalize their 40-man roster prior to Rule 5:

Giants purchased the contracts of 1B Travis Ishikawa, OF Nate Schierholtz, RHP Kelyn Acosta, LHP Jon Coutlangus, LHP Jesus Reina and C Eliezer Alfonzo.

Ishikawa and Schierholtz are two of the Giants' better prospects, and Acosta and Coutlangus throw hard enough that there's a chance someone would have selected them in the Rule 5 draft. Alfonzo's addition is shocking. He's always been able to hit, but he turns 27 in February and he's never been looked at as a prospect.

Eliezer Alfonzo career stats:

There are still many, many former Brewer farmhands toiling in independent ball. We normally won't post each and every transaction involving those kids, but here's one for those who played with and or watched RHP Dan Grybash:

Independent League Fort Worth Cats (American Association) Press Release:

The Fort Worth Cats have re-signed right-handed pitcher Dan Grybash for the 2006 season.

Grybash, 23, joined the Cats on June 18 and was 6-2 with a 4.06 ERA in 11 games in 2004. He made nine starts and pitched 57 2/3 innings, struck out 57 and walked 14. Grybash won six consecutive decisions from July 5 - Aug. 8 and was 4-0 with a 2.63 ERA in July.

He was 1-1 in three playoff appearances, including two starts. Grybash was the winning pitcher in relief in the decisive Game 5 of the first-round series against Pensacola.

He started the 2005 season with Brevard County in the Florida State League where he was 0-1 with an 8.24 ERA in 17 games. In 19 2/3 innings of work, he struck out 25.

In 2004 Grybash was 4-2 with a 4.98 ERA for Class-A Beloit, the Milwaukee Brewers' Midwest League affiliate. In 40 relief appearances, Grybash worked 72 1/3 innings and struck out 55 while walking 52.

In his rookie season, 2003, he was 2-1 with a 2.82 ERA in 17 games for Helena in the Pioneer League. Grybash was originally selected by Milwaukee in the 32nd round of the 2003 draft.

A Chicago-native, Grybash now resides in Palatine, Ill.

RHP Jayson Durocher, who didn't pitch anywhere in 2005, was signed by the Rangers to a minor league deal.

Durocher helped implode my first Miller Park visit in 2003 with his work in the 11-10 Saturday night loss to the Red Sox:

What is not mentioned there is that Durocher had a "uniform malfunction" in the crotch area and basically ran into the dugout to pull his broken jock off and up from above his belt. He then promptly surrendered a Kevin Millar grand slam upon his return to the mound.
