if someone were available in a waiver claim, or if a non-roster guy makes it, Hendrickson and possibly Krynzel might be DFA'd. Krynzel might get claimed, but it's doubtful that with 40 man rosters full, that Hendrickson would get claimed.

From Drew Olson of the JS:

Phoenix - The Milwaukee Brewers assigned left-hander Jason Kershner and right-hander Allan Simpson to minor-league camp today, bringing the number of players in camp to 35.

Kershner, who signed a minor-league contract on Dec. 1, appeared in six exhibition games and was 0-1 with a 5.40 earned run average. He allowed 11 hits and five runs in 8 1/3 innings. He walked one batter and struck out five.

Simspon, who signed after being released by Cincinnati last week, made his first appearance for the Brewers Friday and allowed an unearned run and a hit. He walked a batter and struck out one.

Pretty sure those 3 are correct.

Brian, I can find you a dozen AAA CF's who are every bit as good 5th OF's as Krynzel would be. 24 is young...but with Hart, Weeks, and Prince in the bigs after dominating AAA, it's tough to see him as ever being more than a reserve.

Just because he's a #1 pick, though, someone might take a flyer on him.

According to the Huntsville Times, the Brewers have released the following players:

1B Brandon Gemoll, the team's 8th round pick in 2001 out of Fresno State, finished 6th in hitting (.303) in the Southern League last season. A .281 hitter in 1606 pro AB's, Gemoll, 25 years old, simply didn't slug at a corner level clip, although his .438 SLG and .789 OPS in 2005 were the highest of his pro career.

Catcher Kade Johnson, 27 years old, was the Brewers' 2nd round pick in 1999 out of Seminole Junior College. Injured for all of 2005, Johnson had been on the Milwaukee 40-man roster previously. Other than rookie ball and the portions of three seasons he spent in High Desert (where everyone raked), Johnson's numbers disapponted. Drafted 61st overall, you'd have to pull out the word associated with failed high draft picks, fair or not -- "bust".

LHP Josh Habel, acquired in September 2004 from the San Francisco Giants for veteran RHP Dave Burba, was also let go. Outstanding numbers in Brevard County last season, not so in AA Huntsville (near-equal split of his 128+ innings), at 25 years old, it wouldn't be a shock to see Habel land elsewhere, especially considering his left-handedness.

More news from Mark McCarter of the Huntsville Times:

The Stars have determined their likely first baseman for the season. Greg Sain, who led the Southern League with 28 homers for Mobile in 2004, is expected to start in Huntsville. He split last season between Double-A and Triple-A.

Pitcher Matt Yeatman, 5-7 a year ago at New Britain, the Twins' Double-A club, has been picked up in a trade and should be a part of the Huntsville staff. Yeatman began his career with the Brewers and was with Money at Beloit several years ago.

We'll try to have more on these acquisitions later today, including more details of the Yeatman trade acquisition.

5th round pick of San Diego in 2001, 26 years old

now 23 years old, 13th round out of high school, 2001; traded with RHP Gerry Oakes for RHP Matt Kinney and C Javier Valentin in November 2002

i've always pulled for brandon gemoll and kade johnson...they seem like they've been in the system for a looooong time...actually, they have...

and so i mourn their exits...

but welcome back Matt Yeatman! that's a pleasant flashback, eh?

Kade is probably an injury flameout more than anything else. I certainly don't see Gemoll as anything but filler.

Yeatman returns. It's funny, to me the best player in that trade at the time was Valentin, and he still is, but I was the only one who thought so for a couple years.

Yeah, Al . . . as all four players were relatively nondescript, I'd wager that a good 25% of those who cared about the trade would have identified Valentin as their pick to click. I seriously overrated Kinney, but I certainly knew enough to let loose a big "d'oh!" when DM traded Valentin. I wouldn't put this on your prognostication highlight reel.

Also, while I'm in the relatively unusual mode of arguing with you, I still don't get how you can be as down on Krynzel as you are and as high on Gwynn as you are. We haven't had that argument on the board in a few weeks, so there's the bait if you want it.

That's fine, but not in the Transactions thread, boys...

There's something to be said for taking the ball 28 times (27 starts) in a single low-A ball season.

LHP Greg Kloosterman pitched in some bad luck last season at times, but he was also responsible for a big chunk of his ugly 4-19 record at West Virginia in 2005.

Kloosterman voluntarily retired early in camp this spring.

Kloosterman shattered the franchise's Class A record (since 1987) for losses in a season. Phil Merrell went 5-15 for the 1998 Charleston Alley Cats. He then went on to break the South Atlantic League record of 17, set by Charles Thompson of Charleston (S.C.) in 1990, and tied in 1997 by Hagerstown's (and future Brewer) Gary Glover.

Kloosterman, the Brewers' 9th round pick in 2003, will be 24 in June. Unfortunately for Greg, he'll also always be associated with the incident in Peoria in 2004, in which he was stabbed while out late with three teammates. From that incident, only catcher Lou Palmisano is still with the organization now, after the 2005 release of RHP Kevin Rival and the trade this offseason of RHP Justin Barnes to the Royals.

Pat Neshek states in his blog that Matt Yeatman was released, which makes more sense then a trade. So the Brewers probably picked him up.

Yeatman was moved back to the bullpen in AA and has stuggles a bit in spring training as well. He allowed two hits, issued two walks and struck out two in two innings of work Sunday. (There was also a run, but it was unearned as 2nd baseman Matt Tolbert fell on the ball). He was running his pitch counts though, something theTwins hate seeing.

Hopefully a change of climate will do him good. Sometimes I think Cliburn ruins our pitchers when he gets his hands on them.

Here are the names from the AAA and AA level that don't appear on a roster as of yet. Several were off-season minor league free agent acquisitions. In italics are upper-level pitchers coming off major injuries. We'll work on confirming the status of these players over the next few days.

We will not put out a similar list on players projected below AA until we receive a Brevard County roster.

The last thing we want to do is announce a "release" that turns out is incorrect.

The Brewerfan Player Index now reflects proper player level for AAA and AA, as much as we know.

RHP Jerome Gamble

1B Luis Lopez

RHP Josue Matos

LHP Sam Narron

OF Tatsuya Ozeki (was he ever really in camp?)

LHP Wilfredo Rodriguez

2B / OF Jason Romano

RHP Glenn Woolard

LHP Clayton Andrews

UT Corey D. Hart

OF Colin Porter

Rodriguez got a lot of time in the big league camp. The only name I missed was Colin Porter, who I thought would be the 4th OF in N-ville.

Greg, Krynzel and Gwynn are pretty much the same player, but many big league teams will find Dave's K numbers a deal breaker. Also, I may be a bit biased because I saw Tony play at Apple-ton, and he can run and defend with anyone. He can slap the ball the other way. He's a prototypical reserve OF, maybe he'll hit enough to be part of a platoon. Once you become a "starter", teams like the Nationals or Giants might keep paying you to be one whether you deserve it or not.

See Goodwin, Tom.
