From the Brewers:

LHP Dana Eveland was optioned to Triple A Nashville today . . . LHP Wilfredo Rodriguez was returned to Minor League camp. The Brewers now have 44 players in camp including nine non-roster invitees. . . the roster consists of 22 pitchers, five catchers, nine infielders and eight outfielders.

Drew Olson:

Phoenix - Left-hander Dana Eveland, who entered spring trianing as a candidate for the Milwaukee Brewers' starting rotation, was optioned to Class AAA Nashville this morning.

Eveland, 22, reported to camp heavier than the Brewers wanted and began a weight-loss regimen when camp began. He never got on track on the mound. He pitched in four exhibition games and was 0-1 with a 15.75 earned run average. In eight innings, he allowed 19 hits and 14 earned runs. He walked six batters, struck out one and saw opponents bat .500 against him.

Manager Ned Yost said that Eveland will work as a starter in minor-league camp, where games begin today. Yost wants Eveland and other minor-leaguers "stretched out'' and ready to start in case Rick Helling or Ben Sheets are hampered by injury near the end of camp.

The Brewers also assigned lefty Wilfredo Rodriguez to minor-league camp. Rodriguez appeared in three games and gave up five hits, two walks and one earned run. Opponents hit .417 against him.

The Brewers now have 44 players in camp including nine non-roster invitees.

This means 35 players left on the active roster, but I only saw 4 options (Jones, Nelson, Parra, Eveland). Did we miss an optioned player? Did Irribarren get optioned already?

EDIT: JS is reporting that Gwynn and De maria were optioned to AAA and Irribarren to A+.

I wonder how many figured Carlos Villanueva would be in major league camp longer than Eveland.

OK, it's been a surprise that eveland hasn't performed like we all hoped he would and it's true many didn't figure Villanueva to be in big league camp still, but he is...

He keeps surprising alot of prople everytime he goes out there and gets a chance...

I believe he's gonna be a nice surprise and help the Brewers in the not so far future...

7 inn. (includes 2 inn. against Japan Qualifying team). 3 runs 9 k's 0 walks...not bad..:b

Just heard on the brewers radio network that we signed alan simpson and invited him to major league camp.

from baseball prospectus

the hard throwing right hander with perpetual control problems started the season in colorado, then was traded to the reds for jose acevedo and finished the minor league season in louisville before beign given the shot of expresso in the quenn city. He pitched ectremely well in the high profile, which puts a bullet next to his nade on the roster of a team like the reds with a pitching staff in flux. A true coach's projects

sounds like maddux's latest reclamation project to me

LHP Zach Jackson assigned to minor league camp, also -- because he's not on the 40-man roster, they don't have to name the exact squad he's assigned to yet (yes, most likely Nashville, but not etched in stone):

The Milwaukee Brewers have signed right-handed pitcher Allan Simpson to a Minor League contract with an invitation to Major League camp and assigned left-handed pitcher Zach Jackson to Minor League camp, it was announced today by Doug Melvin, Executive Vice President and General Manager. Simpson will report to Brewers Major League camp on Tuesday, March 21.

Simpson, who resides in Apple-ton, Wis., began the spring with the Cincinnati Reds before he was released on March 18. This spring he went 1-0 with two saves and a 0.00 ERA in five appearances (5.0 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 5 K). Overall, Simpson owns a 2-2 Major League record alongside a 6.22 ERA in 43 appearances, nine of those for the Reds in 2005. He was originally selected by the Seattle Mariners in the eighth round of the June 1997 free agent draft.

Jackson, 22, made four appearances/one start this spring and compiled a 2-1 mark alongside a 9.00 ERA. He was acquired from the Toronto Blue Jays on December 8, 2005, as the player to be named later along with right-handed pitcher Dave Bush and outfielder Gabe Gross in exchange for infielder Lyle Overbay and a player to be named later (Ty Taubenheim).

The Brewers currently have 41 players in Major League camp, including eight non-roster invitees.

Simpson fanned 89 in something like 63 AAA innings last year. He also had not allowed a run in 5 appearences this spring with the Reds.

Seems to be a pickup in the Kolb/Turnbow mold, a hard thrower off the scrap heap. Maddux has worked wonders before.
