I really hope Sarfate can keep the walks to a minimum tonight. He's got such a good arm it'd be a shame if he put it all together for another team.

Sorry, silly me relying on memory for Brevard County's rotation, without press coverage on the Manatees.

Just adjusted the above, as I just realized it's Mark Rogers, not Yo Gallardo, going tonight. Based on Mark's recent outings, still exciting to follow.

I just noticed, except for Huntsville, every team is either first or second in their league for batting average. Quite a difference from past years, when most teams were consistently near the bottom.

I was most surprised to the Power leading the league, but I guess yesterday's game would do it.

Nashville - 2/16

Huntsville - 9/10

RHP Mike Meyers will be taking Jared Fernandez' turn in the Nashville rotation on Saturday, according to the the Sounds' press notes.

Yet to be announced if that is considered a mid- to long-term status, or a spot start, with another candidate (Huntsville's Corey Thurman?) to possibly emerge in the next week or two.

In progress: West Virginia 9, Lexington (Astros) 0, after six innings

Only two HR's thus far http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif ; Will Inman has allowed two earned runs in 24 IP this year (0.75 ERA), with a K-to BB ratio of 27-to-3 -- the kid won't even be 20 until next February...

wow, amazing to look at the hitting lines for the West Virginia guys. Considering they started slowly, and we haven't yet heard from Richardson, this team might continue getting better and better.

Clean defense as well -- the team putting on a show for visiting Reid Nichols; highlights up-and-down the lineup; Ryan Crew three hits and involved in three double plays at second base; stat you didn't know: between late 2005 and this season, RHP Dane Renkert has allowed one earned run in 27.2 innings in a West Virginia uniform...

West Virginia Game Summary:

No hangover for Power offense

One night after setting a South Atlantic League record for home runs in a single game, the West Virginia Power offense pounded out 13 hits and had nine runs to show for it, in a 9-0 shutout victory over the Lexington Legends on Friday night at Appalachian Power Park.

The scoring started in the bottom of the second inning when Nate Yoho knocked in Ryan Crew with an RBI single. The Power struck again in the fourth inning when Mike Bell ripped his second home run of the season, a solo shot to put the Power up 2-0. The Power sent eight batters to the plate in the fifth inning and scored four times to open up a six run lead. Mat Gamel, Crew and Ned Yost all contributed with RBI singles. The fourth run of the inning crossed the plate after Crew got caught up in a rundown between first and second base, allowing Mike Bell to score. Angel Salome blasted a three-run homer in the fifth inning, his fourth of the year to put the Power on top 9-0.

Will Inman, Rafael Lluberes and Dane Renkert combined for the third Power shutout of the season. This marks the second time that this threesome has combined for a shutout this season.

Inman (3-0) pitched five scoreless innings, struck out five and earned the victory. Levi Romero (4-1) obtained the loss. The Power are 14-13 after the win and the Legends fell to 15-13 with the loss. The win marks the first time the Power have been over .500 since opening night. Attendance for the game was 4,301.

The Power continue the six game series against the Lexington Legends at Appalachian Power Park on Saturday night. Lexington will start left hander Doug Arguello (0-1, 5.79) and West Virginia will counter with left hander Dave Welch (0-1, 1.74). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM (6:05 Central).

What is the pitch count again for starters like Inman? 60? About 30 when they piggy-back in relief? I don't remember too many 5 inning outings for Rogers, who is having a hard time going 5 innings as a non-piggy-back starter for the Manatees.

If Inman keeps it up, it is going to be hard for the Brewers to hold him back, although I won't complain one bit if they do (in fact I will be somewhat impressed by their probable wise restraint). I don't mean to jinx Inman, but he has been just as impressive at WV as he was in rookie ball. If pitch counts weren't a concern, I'd say swap him and Rogers, letting Rogers know what being a pitcher is all about.

As a disclaimer, I don't mean to be too hard on Rogers, because you just can't give up on special arms like his, especially this early in his career, but I had a feeling his last start was more of a tease than anything. Remember when people got impatient with Nick Neugebauer through A-ball and even into AA, and than everything seemed to come together for him at AA Huntsville? Nevermind how Neugie's career path took a bad turn, it's proof that Rogers still has plenty of time to figure it out.

Oh yeah, start talking about Mat Gamel...

Stars Suffer Stinging Defeat in Tenth

Luis Montanez singled home the game-winning run in the bottom of the tenth inning to lift West Tenn to a 4-3 comeback victory over Huntsville Friday night at Pringles Park in the fourth game of a five-game set. The Diamond Jaxx have won the last three games to improve to 17-12 and move within two games of first place Chattanooga in the Southern League North Division, while the Stars dropped to 15-14 and remain four games behind the Lookouts.

Chris Walker led off the tenth with a slicing double to left field and has hit safely in all four games in the series. Eric Patterson dropped down a sacrifice bunt and reached base safely when third baseman Adam Heether?s throw to first base could not be handled by second baseman Callix Crabbe, covering on the rotation play. Montanez then grounded a 1-1 offering from Joe Winkelsas past a diving shortstop Ozzie Chavez to chase home Walker with the decisive win. The Stars have dropped all three extra inning games they have played in this season. It was the first run Winkelsas has allowed since April 10 at Mississippi, a stretch of nine scoreless frames.

Micah Hoffpauir tied the game in the fifth inning with a two-out home run off of Alec Zumwalt, who opened the frame in relief of starter Matt Yeatman. Hoffpauir had belted a 1-0 pitch home run distance but foul but did not miss on the next pitch from Zumwalt to swat his league-leading eighth home run of the season. Hoffpauir had tripled home a run and scored in the first inning, marking the first time Yeatman had been scored on in 15.1 innings, dating back to April 8 at Mississippi.

Heether and Lou Palmisano singled with one out in the second before Jeff Eure doubled to left to plate Heether and push Palmisano to third. Crabbe followed with a double to right to score both runners and give the visitors the lead. Crabbe has knocked in runs in 11 of his 25 starts and 11 of his 16 runs batting left-handed.

Clay Rapada picked up the win in relief with a scoreless tenth inning. He gave up a one-out single to Drew Anderson, the only hit for the Stars after a leadoff single by Ozzie Chavez in the third inning. Thomas Atlee worked three scoreless, hitless innings and has tossed five shutout frames in relief in the series.

The series concludes Saturday night when the Stars send right-hander Khalid Ballouli to the mound against West Tenn left-hander Randy Wells. Coverage of the game begins at 6:50 p.m. central time and can be heard on ESPN Radio 1450 AM locally and via the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com.
