are we sure it's not for fires?

I wonder if the Crew will hold Eveland back a bit. Like have him throw 4 innings or 80 pitches, so he could be available on Saturday just in case.

It's what the Mets did with Lima last week. Although the wisdom of that was debatable. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

In progress: West Virginia 0, Hickory 0, after three innings

Enjoying Andy "Bull" Barch's call as a pre-game to the West Coast Brewer action. Both pitchers in cruise control here, the Power had their first two men on in the 1st -- a Mat Gamel GIDP ended the inning; LHP Derek Miller continues to dominate low-A pitching -- if Huntsville needs a starter and the Brewers don't want to push any of the young Brevard starters, Miller, at age 24, could probably make that jump and hold his own nicely...

Today's Brevard game will not be made up this season.

Update: West Virginia 1, Hickory (Pirates) 1, after seven innings

CF Darren Ford just laid out for a diving catch to end the 7th, something the game log would never give due justice to...

Extra innings in Hickory -- high audio drama in the bottom of the 9th as the Crawdads loaded the bases with one out; in the midst of that, third baseman Mat Gamel made a diving stop that saved the game for the time being. We've harped on Gamel's errors, but that was a huge play there...

The start of the game in Huntsville is delayed by rain.

Final: West Virginia 3, Hickory (Pirates) 2, ten innings

West Virginia Box Score:

22-year-old RHP Wilfredo Laureano's a nice story -- he's improved every year (now in his 6th pro season), and is one of the few holdovers from the days of full-blown Brewer Dominican Summer League teams, where he spent three full seasons; Darren Ford's successful sacrifice in the 10th as big as any base hit...

West Virginia Game Log:

Line drive out to end it with runners on 2nd and 3rd as Dane Renkert pitches a scary save in the 10th; all in all, a very entertaining well-played game and a pretty big win for the Power in their tightly-bunched division...

Laureano (who made his Power 50 debut at #47 last time) is a tall, lanky kid, sort of in the mold of Luis Pena. With some solid effort this year, he could emerge as a good relief prospect. His height lends to natural leverage on his pitches, and he's stayed pretty healthy through the important years for a pitcher. The future could be pretty good for Wilfredo.

yeah Toby, saw you mentioned him, and today's the first day I actually noticed him in the boxscore, thanks to you. I'd like to know more, but I'll wait for some continued success first.

Huntsville's Struggles at Home Continue

Jim Magrane, Jean Machi and Jeff Ridgway combined on a three-hit shutout and made early runs stand up in Montgomery?s 3-0 blanking of Huntsville Tuesday night in a game delayed by an hour and a half at the outset because of rain. The Biscuits have taken the last two games of the five-game set to improve to 20-13, square the season series at four games apiece and maintain a one game lead over Jacksonville in the South Division, while the Stars dropped to 17-16 and fell six games behind victorious, front-running Chattanooga in the Southern League North Division.

Elliot Johnson started the game with a double off the glove of a diving center fielder Steve Moss, moved to third base on a sacrifice bunt by Matthew Maniscalco and scored on a base hit by Jason Pridie, who knocked in his eighth run of the year. Johnson has scored in the first inning of each of the two games Corey Thurman has started against the Biscuits. Anuedi Cuevas singled with two outs in the second inning and scored when Jeremy Owens followed with a double to left field.

Michael Coleman doubled with one out in the sixth and scored when Gabriel Martinez followed with a single to center field to collect just his third hit in 25 at-bats against Stars? pitching this season. Thurman left after six innings and suffered his fourth defeat of the season and third in as many starts after allowing eight hits and striking out a season-high six. Huntsville has scored only 12 runs in his seven starts, with six coming in his lone win over Mobile at home on April 23.

Magrane allowed a two-out single in the first to Drew Anderson and did not give up another hit until Kennard Bibbs singled with one out in the sixth. Ozzie Chavez doubled to left but Bibbs was thrown out at the plate trying to score by left fielder Francisco Leandro. Magrane lasted six innings and has now thrown 11 straight scoreless frames against the Stars after allowing a first inning run on April 18. He notched his league-best fifth win by yielding three hits, striking out five and walking two. Jean Machi worked two scoreless frames and Jeff Ridgway retired the side in order in the ninth to earn his second save of the season.

Huntsville was shut out for a fifth time at home and fell to 9-9 at the friendly confines of ?the Joe.? The Stars have totaled only 46 hits in their last eight games and have scored one run over the last 22 innings.

The series continues Wednesday afternoon with right-hander Matt Yeatman taking the mound against Montgomery southpaw Mike Prochaska. Coverage of the game begins at 11:50 a.m. central time and can be heard locally on ESPN Radio 1450 AM and via the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com.

Huntsville Box Score:

It's not like immediate offensive help is forthcoming, either...

Sounds Drop Road Trip Opener In Tucson, 4-3

TUCSON, Ariz. ? The Nashville Sounds dropped their third straight game on Tuesday evening, falling 4-3 to the host Tucson Sidewinders in the opener of a four-game series at Tucson Electric Park.

The Sounds were held to a season-low four hits by a pair of Sidewinders hurlers in the loss. The defeat was the seventh in a row in Tucson for Nashville (20-12), which has matched its largest losing streak of the season with its current skid.

Nashville jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning with a two-out rally against Sidewinders starter Enrique Gonzalez. With two down, Corey Hart doubled and scored one batter later on Nelson Cruz?s RBI single.

Cruz, who finished 2-for-3 in the contest to account for half of the Sounds? hit total on the night, ripped his PCL-leading 12th double of the season in the third inning.

The Sidewinders took a 2-1 lead with a pair of two-out unearned runs in the bottom of the third stemming from Vinny Rottino?s second error of the game at third base coupled with a throwing error by left fielder Dave Krynzel.

Sounds starter Dana Eveland (3-1) took a hard-luck first loss of the season after turning in another solid outing. The southpaw allowed two unearned runs on five hits over five innings of work to lower his PCL-leading ERA to 0.75 on the year.

Eveland was pulled from the game early after throwing only 70 pitches and is a candidate to be recalled by Milwaukee on Wednesday to replace the injured Ben Sheets in the Brewers? starting rotation.

Chris Barnwell extended his season-best hitting streak to 12 games with a double in the top of the fifth inning. The Nashville shortstop also upped his consecutive games on base streak to a team-best 24 with the two-bagger.

Tucson tacked on two important insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth courtesy of Chris Carter?s third home run of the year, a two-run shot to right off Nashville reliever Allan Simpson. Carlos Quentin, who preceded Carter to the plate and was hit by a pitch, scored on the roundtripper.

The Sounds rallied in the ninth, plating a pair of unearned runs when Tucson left fielder Kenny Perez misplayed a Krynzel fly ball to reduce the home club?s lead to 4-3. Cruz and Rottino, who had each drawn walks from Randy Choate earlier in the frame, scored on the play. Choate recovered to retire Barnwell for the final out of the contest with the potential tying run standing on second.

Nashville now stands at 0-5 in one-run decisions on the road this season.

Gonzalez (3-3) struck out five and held the Sounds to one run on four hits over his 7 1/3 frames to earn the victory and square his record on the year. Choate recorded his third save of the season after registering the final five outs.

Nashville looks to get back into the win column when the teams continue the series on Wednesday night. Sounds right-hander Dennis Sarfate (1-0, 3.20) makes the start against Tucson right-hander Edgar Gonzalez (1-3, 3.96) in the clubs? 8:30 p.m. CT meeting.

Biscuits blank Stars 3-0

Mark McCarter, Huntsville Times

It took Montgomery nearly two years to beat the Stars in Huntsville. Now it's taken only two nights to do it twice.

The Biscuits, leading the Southern League South, knocked off the Stars 3-0 Tuesday night in a game delayed 89 minutes by rain. It was a testament to the grounds crew and the stadium drainage system that the game could even be played after the torrential early evening rain. Before Monday, Montgomery's last victory here had come on Aug 12, 2004; it is now 4-14 at Joe Davis Stadium.

The Stars have scored only one run in their last 23 innings against Montgomery, this time falling to veteran Jim Magrane, who combined with two relievers to three-hit Huntsville.

Corey Thurman, who came into the game No. 4 in the league in ERA, suffered his fourth hard-luck loss against one win. The Stars have now scored two runs or fewer in six of his seven starts.

Doubles were his downfall Tuesday - a leadoff double in the first by Elliot Johnson, who scored on a Jason Pridie single, a two-our RBI double in the second by Jeremy Owens and a leadoff double in the sixth by Michael Coleman, driven home by Gabriel Martinez.

The Stars and Biscuits, sure to be a tad weary, will play today at 12:05 in a Businessperson's Special, with Matt Yeatman (1-0, 1.33) pitching for Huntsville against Montgomery's Mike Prochaska.

Four years ago, pitching at Beloit for Stars manager Don Money, Yeatman rolled up brilliant numbers - 11-7, 2.45 ERA and a strikeout for each of his 127 innings.

That off-season he was traded to the Minnesota organization. This spring, though, the Brewers jumped at the chance to "bring him back home,'' so to speak. He's demonstrated why.

Yeatman, a 23-year-old righthander pressed into the starting rotation after an injury to Jeff Housman, is 1-0 with an ERA of 1.33 for the season.

He allowed only three hits and struck out six in four innings of his first start, part of a four-hit shutout, and got no decision in his next start, in which a string of 15 1/3 scoreless innings was ended.

On Thursday, the Stars and Biscuits will play a 10:05 "School Day" game to close the series. Khalid Ballouli will go against Chris Flinn.
