Huntsville Site Game Summary:

Villanueva Tosses Gem

Carlos Villanueva tossed a complete-game, one-hit shutout, as Huntsville snapped a four-game losing streak with a 4-0 victory over Tennessee Saturday night at Smokies Park. The Stars improved to 18-18 on the season and evened the five-game set at a game apiece, while the Smokies dropped to 17-20 and saw their two-game win streak stopped.

Villanueva set down the first two batters of the game then yielded a two-out single to Miguel Montero before retiring Jamie D?Antona on a ground ball to third to end the inning. He then retired the side in order over the next seven innings and opened the bottom of the ninth by striking out Steve Garrabrants and getting pinch-hitter Jesus Cota to ground out to third. Danny Richar drew a walk to end the streak of 24 batters in a row retired but Villanueva got Jerry Gil, who had struck out in his first three at-bats, to ground out to third to end the game and finish off the Stars first nine-inning, complete-game shutout of the season. Three pitchers had teamed up to blank the Smokies 8-0 in the second game of a doubleheader on May 1 for the Stars? only other shutout of the season.

Villanueva earned his fourth win, and third on the road, by matching a season-high with eight strikeouts and has now fanned 47 and walked 11 on the year. He has allowed one run in 24 2/3 innings away from home and has struck out 28 and walked four on the road.

The Stars manufactured the first run of the game in the first inning off of Huntsville native Adam Bass when Callix Crabbe walked with one out, stole second and third base and scored on a sacrifice fly by Ron Acuna. Huntsville added a run in the fifth inning on a base hit by Kennard Bibbs that plated Guilder Rodriguez and another in the sixth when Acuna doubled and scored on a two-out, two-bagger by Jeff Eure, who knocked in his 13th run of the season.

Bass was taken out after six innings, during which he allowed three runs, two earned, on six hits and a pair of walks. He struck out three and suffered the loss to fall to 2-3 on the season. He had given up six runs on eight hits at Joe Davis Stadium in a no-decision against the Stars on April 27. The visitors tacked on another run in the eighth inning on a run-scoring single by Lou Palmisano and matched their run-production during the course of losing streak. The eight hits for Huntsville were the most in a game since the 8-0 win over the Smokies 12 days ago.

The series continues Sunday afternoon when the Stars send right-hander Tim Dillard to the mound against Smokies? right-hander Garrett Mock. Coverage of the game begins at 12:45 p.m. central time and can be heard on ESPN Radio 1450 AM locally and via the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com.

Fowler scored in the bottom of the fifth inning on a wild pitch and Chris Nelson plated the second run in the fifth on catcher Brad Willcutt?s throwing error. John Restrepo hit his first home run of the season for Asheville in the bottom of the sixth, a solo shot which made it 5-0 Tourists. Asheville scored their final run of the game in the seventh on Carte?s second RBI single of the game. Sounds like Villanueva has things figured out.

Well even before tonight he was allowing a miserly 437 OPS against on the road. So that is going to shrink even further.

However, at home he is conceding a quite gruesome 875 and tonight's effort won't help that.

Weird thing is IIRC, when he was called up last year he was exactly the same, fine on the road - awful at the Joe.

It really does begin to feel that there is something about Joe Davis stadium or the town of Huntsville that brings out the worst in Carlos. I'm going to have to take that road trip to see him at his best.

Jackson, Sounds Defeat 51s In Series Opener

LAS VEGAS, Nev. ? Left-hander Zach Jackson celebrated his 23rd birthday with his first victory of the season, tossing seven strong innings to lead the Nashville Sounds to a 8-2 win over the Las Vegas 51s on Saturday evening at Cashman Field in the opener of a four-game series.

Jackson (1-2) allowed two runs (one earned) on six hits while striking out five batters in a season-high seven innings of work to log his first victory as a member of the Milwaukee Brewers organization. He received seven runs of support in the outing after receiving only six cumulative runs behind him in his first six starts.

The Sounds scored in seven of the nine innings. Dave Krynzel paced a 14-hit Nashville attack with a 4-for-5 evening that included a double and two stolen bases. Catcher Mike Rivera went 2-for-4 to up his team-leading average to .380 on the year.

With the win, Nashville matched Las Vegas with a 22-14 record and improved to 10-2 in games decided by five or more runs.

The 51s struck first, taking a 1-0 lead with an unearned run in the bottom of the first inning.

Nashville second baseman Jermaine Clark evened things at 1-1 in the top of the second when he belted his first home run of the season, a two-out solo shot to right off Las Vegas starter Eric Stults. The longball ended a team-high 117 at-bat homer drought.

Rivera put the visitors on top by a 3-1 margin in the third with a two-out, two-run double to center that brought in Krynzel and Corey Hart. The 51s got one run back in the bottom of the frame on Sergio Garcia?s RBI single.

Tony Gwynn re-extended the Nashville lead to two at 4-2 in the fourth when his two-out RBI single scored Jackson, who had reached one batter earlier on a fielding error by 51s center fielder Jon Weber.

The Sounds scored for the third straight inning in the fifth when Vinny Rottino drove in Hart with a sacrifice fly to center.

Rottino struck again in the seventh when he tripled with two outs then scored on a wild pitch by former Sound Justin Reid to increase the lead to 6-2.

Nashville added a run in the eighth when Chris Barnwell doubled with one out and scored later in the frame on Krynzel?s two-out single. Barnwell finished 3-for-4 in the contest to extend his PCL-best on-base streak to 28 consecutive games.

Nelson Cruz closed out the Sounds? scoring in the ninth with a leadoff solo homer to left off 51s reliever Justin Simmons. The blast was the slugger?s team-leading eighth of the season, tying Cruz for second in the Pacific Coast League.

Stults (3-3) took the loss after giving up five runs (three earned) on seven hits in his five frames.

The teams continue their series with a 2:05 p.m. CT matinee on Sunday afternoon. Right-hander Corey Thurman (0-0, 0.00) makes his Sounds debut when he toes the rubber for Nashville. The 51s will counter with right-hander Chad Billingsley (3-0, 3.44).

Nashville Box Score:

Dave Krynzel shines in front of his nearby hometown (Henderson, NV) fans; Mike Rivera still with an OPS of 1.067 after 92 AB's with only 17 K's; Chris Barnwell still raking, now hitting .358; Zach Jack's ERA 2.70 in the Pacific Coast League -- sweet; your "I didn't know that" fact for today -- Corey Hart, who turned 24 in March, and his wife Kristina, whom he met in High Desert, are expecting their third child in the next month -- nice young family...

ONE FOR THE BOOKS

Just when the Stars needed a lift, Carlos Villanueva was on hand to provide it........ Villanueva's one-hitter was the 14th in Stars history, and only the 5th complete-game one-hit victory; the first since Allen Levrault vs. the Diamond Jaxx on June 1, 1999........ The last complete game victory came only last year when David Bradley (now 1-3, 2.00 for the Class AA-Midland (Tex) Rockhounds beat the Montgomery Biscuits, 4-2 on July 29.

The only hit Carlos gave up was a two-out, 1st inning single by Miguel Montero lined past Adam Heether. Montero then raced all the way to 3rd on a wild pitch, the 6th given up by Villanueva this season. The pitch went all the way to the screen, and Lou Palmisano was not aggresive in his pursuit of the ball, and in a bargain, his throw to third was high and off-line and had to be pulled down by Heether....... Villanueva got out of the inning, however, retiring James D'Antona on a two-hopper to Heether ........ His ground out began a string of 24 consecutive batters retired until Danny Richar walked with two out in the 9th inning. Villanueva threw 24 pitches that inning, his busiest.

The Stars' lifeless bats perked up a little........ Their eight hits tonight is the most since beating Tennessee in the 2nd game of a May 1 double-header, 8-0. Kennard Bibbs, who hit his only home run of the year last season against Huntsville's Adam Bass, tonight's starter for the Smokies, nearly cranked one out on a 2-2 pitch as he led off in the 1st inning, sending Jon Zeringue to the warning track for the first out, but the Stars would get on the scoreboard right away.

Callix Crabbe walked on four pitches. stole second, then third with Drew Anderson batting. Anderson then walked for the first time since April 25th to put runners on the corners, but his walk wouldn't matter as Ron Acuna, hitting in the cleanup position for the first time since the start of the season, hit a fly ball deep to center fielder Steve Garrabrants to score Crabbe, putting the Stars in front, 1-0........ Acuna hit just .154 in the cleanup spot in the first four games of the season, but easily outproduces Greg Sain, who is 4-for-45 since his last home run....... Acuna saved a hit from falling in in the bottom of the 1st when Danny Richar lined a ball to right, but Acuna's speed enabled him to track it down.

Villanueva picked up his 4th win, and has been unbeatable on the road, giving up just one earned run in 26 2/3 innings.

After acquiring former Orlando pitcher Travis Phelps to the roster, the Stars added another former Southern Leaguer....... Matt Smith was acquired from the St. Louis Cardinals and assigned by the Brewers to Huntsville. He was in uniform for Saturday's game....... Smith had made one start in six appearances for the Class AAA-Memphis (PCL) Redbirds and was 1-3 with a 7.71 ERA. His last appearance was a start on May 5 when he was charged with five runs on eight hits and a pair of walks in 3 1/3 innings in an 8-0 loss to Iowa....... Khalid Ballouli left Thursday's game with shoulder tightness, so perhaps he will be placed on the disabled list........ Smith pitched for the Birmingham Barons from 2002-04, appearing in 130 games in relief. In '04, he saved 13 games for the Barons in 70 appearances and had a 1.83 ERA, holding SL batters to a .200 average. The Barons granted him free agency on October 15 of last year.

Drew Anderson extended his hitting streak to eight games with a line drive single to center in the 4th. He is hitting .289 for May...... Friday, he became one of only four Stars with a three-hit game this season (Acuna, Bibbs, and Crabbe being the others)........ In an effort to get the Stars offense going, manager Don Money had the boys running tonight. Even Lou Palmisano, who stole his 1st base. Palmisano had three steals for the Brevard County Manatees last season.......

Against Fresno tonight, Derek Lee went 7 2/3 innings, giving up just one run on eight hits, but without run support, the 3-1 win went to Erasmo Ramirez, who threw just eight pitches....... It was The General's 3rd start in seven appearances for the Oklahoma Redhawks, but Derek is still looking for his 1st win to go with a fine 3.28 ERA.

Dana Eveland went 5 2/3 innings vs. the Mets, Saturday night in the Brewers' 9-8 loss....... Eveland's threw 102 pitches, 58 for strikes, and while he was outpitched by former Southern Leaguer Jeremi Gonzalez, making his first appearance for the Mets, he wasn't shelled. The big blow was a three-run homer by Carlos Beltran in the 3rd, but he retired the side in the 4th and 5th before getting into trouble in the 6th and being relieved by Justin Lehr........ It wasn't his big league debut. He appeared in 27 games for the Brewers last year, but they were all in relief. This was his first big league start...... At Nashville this season, he was 3-1 with a 0.75 ERA.

The Brewers earlier on Saturday traded former Stars shortstop Enrique Cruz to the Texas Rangers for left-hander Brian Shouse. Another player or cash will go to the Rangers to complete the deal....... Enrique was hitting .261 for the Nashville Sounds.

Huntsville's Villanueva one-hits Smokies, 4-0

By NICK GATES, gates@knews.com

SEVIERVILLE - To say the Tennessee Smokies could do little with Huntsville's Carlos Villanueva on Saturday night would be a vast understatement.

If not for a two-out single in the first inning by Miguel Montero, the Stars right-hander would have pitched the second Southern League no-hitter since Smokies Park opened in 2000.

Villanueva retired 24 in a row after Montero sliced a sharp line drive into left-center field in a dominating performance in a 4-0 victory in front of 4,619.

"He kind of overmatched us," Tennessee manager Bill Plummer said.

Tennessee second baseman Danny Richar drew a two-out walk in the ninth to snap Villanueva's streak. That was the only base on balls the 22-year-old Dominican Republic native issued.

Villanueva (4-2) struck out eight. He leads the league with 47 strikeouts.

"He was in command from inning one," Huntsville manager Don Money, a former major league infielder, said. "I don't think there were many balls hit hard."

Tennessee's Leo Estrella no-hit Orlando on May 27, 2000. No visiting pitcher has accomplished the feat since the Smokies moved from Bill Meyer Stadium in Knoxville.

Major league teams are always looking for pitching and the Milwaukee Brewers seem to have a budding star. The National League team included Villanueva on its 40-man roster at a tender age and he appears on a rocket sled to the top.

"They liked him in big league camp," Money said. "I would think he'll stay here all year. All he needs is more seasoning."

Villanueva's repertoire isn't lacking.

"He has all the pitches," Money said. "Fastball, curve, slider and change-up. He threw them all for strikes. All he needs is more games under his belt. Innings."

Plummer felt the Smokies (17-20) made Villanueva's job a breeze.

"I thought we chased a lot of pitches out of the strike zone," he said. "We had some fastballs to hit."

Huntsville made certain Villanueva had a lead before he took the mound.

Callix Crabbe drew a one-out walk and stole second and third base. He trotted home on Ron Acuna's long fly ball.

Kennard Bibbs singled home a run in the fifth and the Stars added another in the sixth on doubles by Acuna and Jeff Eure.

Tennessee starter Adam Bass (2-3) suffered his second loss this week. Birmingham's Lance Broadway shut out Tennessee on four hits Monday in the right-hander's previous start.

"He hasn't been lucky," Plummer said.

Plummer was most disturbed by the Smokies' inability to control Huntsville's running game. The Stars stole four bases after pilfering two on Friday.

It's not catcher Montero's fault.

"He's 1.9 (throwing to second base) and he has no chance of throwing anybody out," Plummer said.

Turnstile Count: Tennessee ranks fourth in the Southern League attendance. The Smokies are averaging 3,618 and on pace to draw 253,260.

The franchise drew 241,163 last year.
