Rogers with another stellar outing....when are they going to promote this guy?

And now, back to this universe......

Rogers 1IP, 5BB, 2K's. At least he didn't give up any hits http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/frown.gif

eek.

Final: Lakeland (Tigers) 7, Brevard County 3

Brevard County Site Game Summary:

Lakeland trips up Brevard County

Lakeland motored past Brevard County, 7-3, on Victor Mendez's legs on Wednesday at Joker Marchant Stadium.

The switch-hitting outfielder's two-run triple highlighted a five-run sixth inning by the Tigers (22-17), who moved into a three-way tie for first place in the West Division with Dunedin and Fort Myers.

Wilkin Ramirez hit a two-run homer that gave Lakeland a 4-3 lead before James Essian singled and Brent Dlugach was hit by a pitch, setting the stage for Mendez's three-bagger. Mendez then scored on Gilberto Mejia's single. He went 2-for-3 with a walk and a stolen base.

Ramirez also drew a bases-loaded walk in the first for the first of the third baseman's three RBIs. Jeff Larish was the only other Tiger to reach base more than once. He was 2-for-2 with a pair of walks and a run scored.

P.J. Finigan (3-0) maintained a perfect record as he pitched 2 1/3 scoreless innings of relief, giving up two hits and fanning two. Starter Jair Jurrjens gave Lakeland 5 2/3 solid innings during his eighth outing of the year, allowing three runs -- one earned -- on five hits and a walk while striking out four.

Brevard County (18-20) briefly held the lead, 3-2, after Freddy Parejo smacked a two-run double to center field. Charlie Fermaint had a productive night leading off, going 2-for-4 with a double, a run scored and a stolen base.

Ben Stanczyk (3-2) suffered the loss, giving up five runs on five hits and a walk through two innings of work. The Tigers had trouble making contact against starter Mark Rogers, who struck out eight batters in just five innings, but also walked six in that same span. The 20-year-old righty gave up four hits as Lakeland touched him up for two runs. -- Michael Echan/MLB.com

Brevard County Box Score:

Only one fly ball out against Mark Rogers - work in progress, folks, work in progress; as evidenced by his now still respectable 3.60 ERA, an uncharacteristic performance by Ben Stanczyk...

Chavez Carries Stars Past Chattanooga

Ozzie Chavez knocked in three runs and Matt Yeatman overcame a rough first inning to work five solid frames in helping to push Huntsville past Chattanooga 8-3 Wednesday night in the opener of a five-game set at BellSouth Park. The Stars stopped a two-game slide, improved to 20-20 and pulled to within four and a half games of the front-running Lookouts, who lost their fourth straight game and fell for the sixth time in seven games.

Joey Votto singled in a run and then scored two batters later when former Stars? outfielder Noochie Varner clubbed a two-run home to right-center field to make it 3-0 Lookouts after one inning. The long ball was the first one allowed by Yeatman and marked the second time in three starts he has been scored on in the first inning.

A single by Adam Heether and walks to Lou Palmisano and Steve Moss loaded the bases with nobody out in the second inning before Chavez hit a ground ball to first base that Votto could not handle, allowing Heether and Palmisano to score and Moss to advance to third base. Kennard Bibbs delivered a sacrifice fly to plate Moss with the tying run.

The Stars took the lead for good with two runs in the sixth when Heether singled to lead off the inning and moved to second base on a wild pitch. Palmisano dropped down a bunt that he legged out for a hit that was fielded by catcher Miguel Perez, who sailed a throw past first base that allowed Heether to score and Palmisano to advance to second base. Moss dropped down a sacrifice bunt and Chavez followed with a double that scored Palmisano to push the Stars lead to 5-3. Eddy Valdez suffered the loss after allowing five runs, three earned, in 5 1/3 innings. He gave up seven hits, walked three and struck out four in falling to 1-2.

Yeatman was lifted after five innings in his longest outing of the year after allowing three runs on five hits and three walks. He fanned five and picked up his second win of the year. Jeff Housman tossed a scoreless sixth inning in his first outing since April 24 at home against Mobile and got some more runs to work with when the Stars scored twice in the seventh. A Carlos Guevera wild pitch on a strikeout of Moss allowed Greg Sain to score from third with two outs and Chavez followed with a double that plated Palmisano, who scored three times after not scoring in seven games. Housman tossed a scoreless seventh and fanned four in his two innings of work.

Russ Rohlicek worked a shutout eighth inning and Joe Winkelsas a scoreless ninth and got Votto to ground into a double play to end the game. Heether had his second three-hit game of the season in the last four days and Chavez knocked in more than one run in a game for the first time this season.

The series continues Thursday night when the Stars send right-hander Carlos Villanueva to the mound against Chattanooga southpaw Tyler Pelland. Coverage of the game begins at 6:00 p.m. central time and can be heard on ESPN Radio 1450 AM locally and via the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com.

Huntsville Box Score:

Only one extra-base hit among the Stars' 12 hits -- wait, the Stars had 12 hits, why complain?

Final: Augusta (Giants) 6, West Virginia 3

With a name like "Crew", how can Ryan not be a big league Brewer some day?

West Virginia Site Game Summary:

Crew goes 3 for 4 in Power loss

Power second baseman Ryan Crew had three hits in Wednesday night?s ballgame against the Augusta GreenJackets, but it was not enough for the Power as the GreenJackets took advantage of a three-run sixth inning to beat the Power 6-3.

Mike Mooney snapped a scoreless tie in the top of the fourth inning with a solo home run. The Power answered in the bottom of the fourth on Tony Festa?s two-out, two-run double to give the Power their only lead of the game.

In the fifth inning the GreenJackets tied the ballgame when Mooney hit a ground ball to Mat Gamel with a runner on third base. Gamel?s throw home bounced off the glove of Angel Salome allowing a run to score. Tied at 2-2 after five innings, the GreenJackets pulled away in the sixth. Kyle Haines and Ben Copeland ripped RBI singles and Pablo Sandoval drove in the last run on an RBI groundout. The GreenJackets added an insurance run in the ninth inning on Greg McCarthy?s RBI double.

Ryan Shaver (3-2) earned the victory, and Will Laureano (1-1) obtained the loss. The Power are 19-18 after the loss and the GreenJackets improved to 21-16 with the win.

The Power will complete the four game series against Augusta on Thursday night at Appalachian Power Park. Augusta will start right hander Ronnie Ray (3-1, 2.63) and West Virginia will counter with right hander Ronny Malave (2-0, 3.38). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM (6:05 Central).

West Virginia Box Score:

Big night for Augusta's leadoff man; Darren Ford two errors in center field; LH starter David Welch left after facing only one batter in the third inning -- no mention of an injury in the game log, but that's not good -- we should learn more Thursday...

Power?s Brantley glad to be back

By Tommy R. Atkinson

Charleston Gazette Staff writer

The West Virginia Power?s Michael Brantley could still smile even though his team just suffered a 6-3 setback Wednesday night against the Augusta (Ga.) GreenJackets.

The 19-year-old left fielder is just glad to be back in a uniform swinging a bat and making plays in the outfield without feeling any nagging pain from his surgically repaired right shoulder.

Brantley, a seventh-round selection in last June?s amateur draft out of Fort Pierce (Fla.) Central High School, had spent the past 1 1/2 weeks on the disabled list because of reoccurring inflammation in his shoulder.

Upon returning for the Augusta series this week, the 6-foot-2, 180-pound Brantley posted back-to-back games with multiple hits for the first time this season. He went 2-for-4 and drove in run in Monday?s 6-1 victory then followed that with another 2-for-4 performance in Tuesday?s 4-3 10-inning win. In Wednesday?s South Atlantic League loss in front of a paid crowd of 2,731 at Appalachian Power Park, Brantley went hitless in three at-bats with a walk but was still pleased.

?The swing feels a lot better now that it?s pain free,?? said Brantley, who hits ninth in the batting order. ?I?ve been doing extra hitting to get my swing back. Most of it?s being pain free. Coming off shoulder surgery it really bothered me. I was changing stuff I shouldn?t have been changing just so I could be pain free. [i?m taking] full hacks [ now and] letting it go, letting it fly.??

Brantley split time last year between Arizona of the Arizona Summer League and Helena (Mont.) of the Pioneer League, both short-season rookie leagues. He compiled a .348 batting average in 198 at-bats with 22 RBIs and 15 stolen bases between the two stops. Entering Tuesday?s play, Brantley was hitting .224 in 67 at-bats with three RBIs and 11 strikeouts.

Power manager Mike Guerrero said he sees special potential in Brantley.

?I think as the season goes along he?s going to be a pretty exciting player,?? said Guerrero. ?He?s got a lot of talent [and a lot of] tools. It?s just a matter of time for him to get everything down. When you?re that young it?s going to take time to do certain adjustments and learn to process. I think he?s really working at the plate extra every day.??

West Virginia used five pitchers Wednesday after starter David Welch had to leave after two scoreless innings. The 6-4, 200-pound left-hander strained his hip or groin when he fielded a ball from the third batter of the first inning.

Power pitching coach John Curtis said Welch tried to stick it out, but was in too much pain. Curtis said the team would wait until today to see how Welch feels before making a decision about the disabled list. Welch was putting together a pretty good outing, allowing just two singles. The next four hurlers allowed all six runs on 10 hits.

After the GreenJackets (21-15) knotted the game at 2-all on a fielding error, they broke the game open with a three-run sixth. The first four Augusta batters reached with three of them crossing the plate for a 5-2 edge.

The Power (19-18) closed the deficit to 5-3 in the bottom of the sixth on a passed ball, but couldn?t come up with a clutch hit when it needed it. In the eighth, West Virginia had runners at first and second with two outs and didn?t score then Ned Yost led off the ninth with a single, but was stranded. In the fifth, the Power had runners at first and third with two outs and couldn?t get anybody home.

?I thought we were a couple of hits from turning the game around,?? said Guerrero. ?We just need to learn from what we did wrong and make some adjustments.??

POWER POINTS: West Virginia?s Ryan Crew went 3-for-4 with his last three at-bats resulting in singles. ... Power pitchers couldn?t get August?s Ben Copeland out. The leadoff hitter went 4-for-4 and the only time he didn?t get a hit was when he walked in his second plate appearance. ... West Virginia will play host to Augusta in the finale of the four-game series Thursday night. ... Thursday's game is Buck Night with admission, hot dogs and fountain and draft drinks only a $1 each.
