Look slike Fermaint is going on one of his hot streaks again. Wahpepah with a really nice outing as well. Good to see him striking some guys out.
"Dustin Pedroia doesn't have the strength or bat speed to hit major-league pitching consistently, and he has no power......He probably has a future as a backup infielder if he can stop rolling over to third base and shortstop." Keith Law, 2006

West Virginia Site Game Summary:

Power offense erupts in the eighth

The West Virginia Power were tied 2-2 with the Greenville Drive going into the bottom of the eighth inning of Friday night?s game at Appalachian Power Park. The Power offense scored four times in the eighth inning and beat the Drive 6-2 in the opening game of the series.

Greenville scored their two runs on a two-out double from Mark Wagner in the top of the first inning. The 2-0 lead held until the Power tied it in the sixth inning. Ned Yost?s sacrifice fly cut the lead in half and Michael Brantley tied the game with an RBI single. Brantley?s second big hit of the game was a two-run triple in the bottom of the eighth inning and gave the Power the lead. Darren Ford followed Brantley with a two-run homer, his second of the year, to complete the four-run frame for the Power. Four Power players had multi-hit games in the victory, and the win marks the first time all year that the Power have gone three games over the .500 mark.

Dane Renkert (4-2) pitched two scoreless innings out of the bullpen to earn the victory, and Ismael Casillas (2-4) obtained the loss. The Power are 21-18 after the win and the Drive fell to 21-20 with the loss. Attendance for the game was 4,731.

The Power will continue the four-game series against Greenville on Saturday night. Greenville will start right hander Clay Buchholz (2-0, 1.93) and West Virginia will counter with left hander Derek Miller (3-1, 2.54). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM (6:05 Central).

West Virginia Box Score:

Love clean defense from the Power; Kevin Roberts strikes out eight in five IP -- encouraging; all three "R" pitchers (Roberts, Ryan, Renkert) very effective; five walks drawn in addition to the 12 Power hits...

Stars Get "Noochied" in Chattanooga

Noochie Varner knocked in two runs to back the solid seven-inning effort by Steve Kelly in Chattanooga?s 3-1 win over Huntsville Friday night in the third game of a five-game set at BellSouth Park. The Lookouts won their second straight game to improve to 27-16, while the Stars fell to 20-22 and six and a half games behind the North Division leaders.

Luis Bolivar singled with one out in the first inning, moved to second on a ground ball out, to third on an Aaron Herr infield hit and scored the game?s first run on a base hit by Varner, who played for the Stars in 2003 and batted .270 with six home runs and 47 runs batted in over 80 games.

Greg Sain led off the second inning with a double, just his second hit in 27 at-bats, and moved to third base on a ground ball by Lou Palmisano that couldn?t be fielded by Javier Colina. The ball got past the Chattanooga second sacker into right field and Sain was able to score when he beat right fielder Rick Asadoorian?s throw to the plate and bowled over the catcher Ryan Hanigan.

The home team took the lead for good in the second inning when Asadoorian scored on a Chris Dickerson sacrifice fly. Joey Votto led off the third inning against Stars? starter Tim Dillard with an opposite field double to left, advanced to third base on an Aaron Herr ground out and scored on a Varner fly ball. Dillard suffered his fourth loss and remained winless since April 17 after allowing three runs on 11 hits in 6 1/3 innings. Varner has knocked in five runs in the series and at least one in all three games.

Kelly stranded two runners in the first, third and fourth innings and one each in the sixth and seventh before departing. He went a season-high seven frames, allowing a run on seven hits and two walks to pick up his fifth win of the season. He struck out five and was followed by Calvin Medlock, who tossed a scoreless eighth inning. Jon Coutlangus allowed an Ozzie Chavez single in the ninth and ended the game by getting Ron Acuna to ground into a force out at second base, which ended his six-game hitting streak. The former outfielder earned his third save in four opportunities.

The series continues Saturday night when the Stars send right-hander Travis Phelps to the mound against Chattanooga southpaw Phil Dumatrait. Coverage of the game begins at 6:00 p.m. central time and can be heard on ESPN Radio 1450 AM locally and via the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com.

Nashville Site Game Summary:

Sounds Rally Late, Snap Skid With 6-3 Win

NASHVILLE, Tenn. ? The Nashville Sounds snapped their longest losing streak of the season in a dramatic way on Friday evening at Greer Stadium, plating four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to record a 6-3 victory over the Tacoma Rainiers in front of 9,372 fans.

Nashville (23-18) picked up its first win in five games and scored all six of its runs in the club?s final two turns at the plate. The Sounds recorded their 11th come-from-behind win of the year and their fourth ?W? in games in which they trailed in the seventh inning or later.

Tacoma first baseman Greg Dobbs gave the visitors a 1-0 lead for the second straight night with a two-out RBI single in the first inning off Sounds starter Zach Jackson. Adam Jones, who opened the game with a double, scored on the knock.

The Rainiers doubled the lead to 2-0 in the third on Mike Morse?s fourth home run of the year, a two-out solo shot to left off Jackson. It was only the second longball allowed by the left-hander in his first 43 innings of work this season.

Another two-out run made it a 3-0 contest in favor of the visitors in the top of the fifth. Michael Garciaparra led off the inning with a single and scored three batters later on a run-scoring knock by Chris Snelling.

Nashville pulled within a run in the bottom of the seventh. Nelson Cruz opened the frame with a bunt single and moved to second on Brad Nelson?s infield single. After both runners advanced a base on a wild pitch by Tacoma starter Francisco Cruceta, Vinny Rottino plated Cruz with the Sounds? first run of the contest with an RBI single to left. Jermaine Clark made it a 3-2 contest when he lifted a sacrifice fly to center to bring in Nelson.

The Sounds grabbed a 6-3 lead in the bottom of the eighth with four runs against the Rainiers bullpen. Jesse Foppert walked the first four batters of the frame, including a game-tying free pass to Cruz that forced home Tony Gwynn to make the score 3-3. After Mike Nannini was summoned from the bullpen, Mike Rivera greeted the right-hander with a two-run single to right that gave Nashville its first lead of the series. The final run came home when Cruz stole third, his second swipe of the evening, and scampered home on a throwing error by Tacoma catcher Rob Johnson.

Tacoma didn?t go quietly in the ninth. The Rainiers put a pair of runners on base against Nashville closer Allan Simpson before the right-hander recovered to retire Jones, the potential tying run, on a foul popout to end the game.

Right-hander Chris Mabeus (1-0) picked up a victory in his Sounds debut after tossing one scoreless inning and striking out two batters. Simpson registered his third save with his scoreless inning of work. Foppert (0-1) took his first loss of the year after blowing the save for the Rainiers. He was credited with only one-third of an inning pitched and allowed four runs (three earned) while walking four batters.

The teams continue the series with a 6 p.m. meeting on Saturday evening. Right-hander Corey Thurman (0-1, 27.00) makes his Greer Stadium debut when he takes the hill for his second start of the year with Nashville. Tacoma will counter with left-hander Bobby Livingston (1-1, 1.80).

Sounds defeat Tacoma to halt four-game skid

By MAURICE PATTON

Tennessean Staff Writer

There was much Faith at Greer Stadium on Friday night, and it was eventually rewarded.

The Nashville Sounds' first Faith Night of the season attracted a number of local faith-based groups among the crowd of 9,372 ? the third-largest attendance figure of the season.

Rallying from a three-run mid-game deficit, the Sounds scored six times in their final two at-bats and ended a season-high four-game losing streak with a 6-3 victory over visiting Tacoma.

"It's nice to win a game, see if we can get that confidence going again and win a few," said Nashville catcher Mike Rivera, whose two-run single with the bases loaded snapped a 3-3 deadlock in the eighth, giving Nashville its first lead of the series after losing 4-1 on Thursday.

"We've been battling and struggling," Rivera said. "It's been tough. When we hit, we didn't pitch; when we pitched, we didn't hit. We faced a pretty good pitcher and battled. You have to try to get the bullpen in and take advantage of it."

Tacoma starter Francisco Cruceta held the Sounds scoreless through six innings before the Sounds picked up a couple of runs off him in the seventh.

In the eighth inning, Rainiers reliever Jesse Foppert walked all four hitters he faced, with Tony Gwynn scoring the tying run on Nelson Cruz's walk. Mike Nannini was greeted by Rivera, who drilled a pitch off the glove of first baseman Greg Dobbs.

"They just beat us (Thursday), and they were beating us again," Nashville Manager Frank Kremblas said. "But we got some help from their pitcher (Foppert), and we took advantage of it, finally."

Chris Mabeus, relieving Sounds starter Zach Jackson, pitched a scoreless eighth inning and picked up the victory in his Nashville debut. Allan Simpson earned the save. The Sounds have now won five of Jackson's last six starts, though he is only 1-1 over that stretch.

Nashville broke its longest losing streak of the season despite being outhit by the visiting Rainiers 7-6.

Jaramillo added to Sounds roster

By MAURICE PATTON

Tennessean Staff Writer

The player moves continue for the Nashville Sounds, with former Memphis infielder Milko Jaramillo added to the active roster prior to Friday's game.

Jaramillo, who had signed with the Reno Silver Sox of the independent Golden Baseball League on May 1, takes the roster spot vacated by Thursday's retirement of Sounds starter Justin Thompson.

Released by the Cardinals out of spring training, Jaramillo never played for the Silver Sox, whose league schedule doesn't start until next month.

In 20 games with Memphis last season ? his first Triple-A appearance ? Jaramillo hit .395 (15-for-38) with a double, two RBIs and five runs scored.

With Thompson's retirement and Jaramillo's arrival, the Sounds had seven roster transactions in a span of three days.

The team has had 23 total moves since the beginning of the season.

Every vote counts: Minor league baseball fans will have the chance to cast online votes for the players that will participate in this summer's Triple-A All-Star Game.

The plan, which is being used for the first time, will allow fan balloting to account for one-third of the total vote, along with league media and the manager, coaches and general manager of each team. Fan voting for the July 12 game in Toledo, Ohio, will take place from June 1-23.

Online votes can be cast on the official Web sites of Minor League Baseball (MiLB.com), the Pacific Coast League (PCLBaseball.com), the International League (ILBaseball.com) and on each of the 30 Triple-A teams' Web sites.

Power outage: Heading into Friday's game, the Sounds had gone 36 innings without a home run and had hit just five in 129 innings, a span covering 13 games. Nashville's 31 homers ranked ninth in the 16-team PCL.

Power surge: Before Tacoma's Mike Morse hit a two-out solo home run off starter Zach Jackson in the third inning, the Nashville left-hander had allowed just one homer in 42 innings this season.

The Sounds had allowed 31 homers heading into Friday's game, the sixth-best total in the league.

Clutch hits lift Power past Greenville

By Jim Workman

For Saturday Charleston Gazette-Mail

The West Virginia Power squandered some early scoring opportunities but some clutch hitting in the late innings helped the home team score a 6-2 victory over Greenville in a South Atlantic League game in front of 4,731 fans at Appalachian Power Park on Friday.

With the game tied at 2, the Power broke through in the eighth. A two-run triple by Michael Brantley that found its way through the gap and to the wall in left-center gave the Power a 4-2 advantage. Darren Ford followed with a two-run homer over the left-field wall, boosting the Power lead to 6-2.

The Power (21-18) has won 10 of its last 13 games and four of its last five and stands in third place in the Sally League?s Northern Division, 2 1/2 games behind leader Lexington.

?We?ve been playing exciting games,? said Power manager Mike Guerrero. ?It?s been fun to watch. Everything has been coming together. We have been playing fundamentally sound baseball. It has been nice watching it come together.?

Greenville got a couple of runs across in the top of the first when Mark Wagner smashed a two-run double. The hit sailed over the first base bag and rolled into foul territory down the right field line, prompting boos from the home crowd and a mild protest from Guerrero.

?I thought it was foul by 2 feet at least,? Guerrero said. ?But people make mistakes, but you cannot lay down and die. You have to go out and work. The way I see it, we still have to score.?

The Power missed many scoring opportunities early, leaving runners on base. There were three stranded in the first inning, two in the second and one in both the third and fourth innings.

?That?s part of the game,? Guerrero admitted. ?Sometimes you score, sometimes you don?t.?

The drought ended in the sixth when Ned Yost swatted a sacrifice fly to right that scored Mike Bell to cut the Drive?s lead to 2-1. Brantley tied it at 2 with a single to left, scoring Ryan Crew.

?As the game goes on, everybody concentrates a little bit more,? Guerrero reasoned. ?We just have to keep doing what we have to do and it will come together.?

Power starter Kevin Roberts pitched a strong five innings of three-hit ball, striking out eight, including three consecutive strikeouts in the fifth. Dane Renkert (4-2) earned the win in relief, throwing the final two scoreless innings.

Greenville reliever Ismael Casillas (2-4) was tagged with the loss.

The Power, which took three in the four-game series over Augusta earlier this week, will play host to Greenville again tonight in the second of a four-game series.
