House to myself this afternoon, was hoping to have the Power game on while tooling around the house. Their own coverage is still in-state with high school playoffs, so listen to the Lake County call here (audio link at bottom of the Captains' home page):

www.captainsbaseball.com/#

No score after one inning -- lefty Rafael Lluberes walked three in the first, but struck out the sixth batter of the inning to survive unscathed.

In progress: West Virginia 7, Lake County (Indians) 3, bottom of the 8th in Lake County (Cleveland)

What a joy this Power team is to follow right now -- they score three in the 7th, three in the 8th, to overcome an early 3-1 deficit; clutch hits, extra-base hits; Patrick Ryan, an unsung Brewerfan favorite in 2006, with four sparkling shutout innings in relief of starter Rafael Lluberes...

West Virginia Site Game Summary:

Power win sixth in a row

The West Virginia Power held off another late rally from the Lake County Captains on Saturday afternoon at Classic Park in Eastlake, Ohio to win their sixth game in a row, beating the Captains 7-6.

For the second game in a row the Captains scored first in the second inning on a solo homer un from Josh Noviskey. In the top of the third the Power tied it up at 1-1 on Darren Ford?s run-scoring double. The Captains took a 3-1 lead in the home half of the third inning. Matt Fornasiere grounded into a double play but brought in the go-ahead run and John Drennen smacked an RBI single to complete the two-run frame.

The lead held until the Power offense scored three runs with two outs in the seventh inning on an RBI double from Tony Festa and a two-run homer from Ryan Crew, his second of the year. The Power added to the lead in the eighth inning on Mat Gamel?s two-run triple, and Gamel scored later in the inning on Mike Bell?s sacrifice fly.

Down 7-3 going into the bottom of the eighth inning, the Captains began their attempt at a comeback. Drennen hit a solo home run and Nuiman Romero walked with the bases loaded to make it a two-run game. In the ninth inning, with a runner on first base and two outs, Noviskey doubled down the right field line to put runners on second and third. Omar Casillas reached on an infield single to score Nick Petrucci and moved the tying run to third base. With runners at the corners and two outs, Joe Thatcher struck out Fernando Pacheco to end the game.

Patrick Ryan (1-1) pitched four scoreless innings out of the bullpen to earn the win, Thatcher (8) earned the save and Michael Finocchi (4-1) obtained the loss. The Power are 30-23 after the win and the Captains fell to 24-31 with the loss.

The Power will finish the four game series against the Captains at Classic Park in Eastlake, Ohio on Sunday afternoon. Lake County will start right hander Frank Herrmann (1-2, 5.67) and the Power will counter with left hander Derek Miller (5-1, 2.73). The first pitch is scheduled for 2:05 PM (1:05 Central).

Via the Lake County audio, it was clear that Angel Salome behind the plate and thus the Power bench weren't pleased with the ball and strike calls today for West Virginia pitchers.

It was a big surprise Salome didn't get booted, as even upon the game ending (on a strikeout), Salome chose to jaw with the umpire instead of enjoying the victory.

The Captains' play-by-play men, who had praised Salome throughout the broadcast, thought it was a real weak move on Angel's part, and I would certainly agree.

Rivera, Sounds Slam Isotopes In Series Opener

NASHVILLE, Tenn. ? Catcher Mike Rivera belted a grand slam to highlight the Nashville Sounds? 8-4 victory over the PCL-leading Albuquerque Isotopes in front of a packed house of 10,123 fans on Saturday evening at Greer Stadium.

Nashville (32-24) increased its winning streak to four games, one short of its longest this season, and has won five of its last six games overall to pull within a half-game of the Isotopes (33-24) for the best record in the Pacific Coast League.

Seven of the eight Sounds starting position players scored a run in the game and all but Dave Krynzel (0-for-3) recorded a hit.

The Sounds wore retro 1980's Milwaukee Brewers jerseys, which were auctioned off during the game with proceeds benefitting the Ronald McDonald House of Nashville.

The visitors grabbed a 3-0 lead in the top of the third against Sounds starter Ben Hendrickson. With two down in the inning, Chris Aguila (3-for-4) ripped a two-run standup triple to right-center. Paul Hoover and Roberto Andino scored on the three-bagger. Former Sound Jason Wood followed with an RBI double just inside the third base bag to bring in Aguila.

Albuquerque starter Renyel Pinto was dealing early and allowed only one hit while striking out seven over the first three innings before being removed due to a pitch count. The southpaw threw 70 pitches, 40 for strikes, in the contest.

Nashville took quick advantage of Pinto?s departure and grabbed a 7-3 lead in the bottom of the fourth with a seven-run rally as the Sounds batted around against Isotopes reliever Jimmy Anderson. Shortstop Chris Barnwell put the Sounds on the board with an RBI single up the middle that plated Vinny Rottino. Zach Sorensen pulled the home team within a run later in the frame, making it a 3-2 contest with a sacrifice fly, before Nelson Cruz singled to center to plate Barnwell and knot the score.

Rivera put the Sounds up four when he belted a 3-2 Anderson offering over both walls in left-center for a grand slam, his eighth longball and Nashville?s second bases-loaded tater of the season. Only one of the seven runs scored in the inning against Anderson was earned, however, as a result of the pitcher?s own throwing error.

The Sounds increased the lead to 8-3 in the fifth against Anderson on Sorensen?s one-out bases-loaded RBI single but missed a chance to do further damage as Cruz bounced into an inning-ending double play with the sacks full.

Albuquerque wrapped up the night?s scoring with a two-out run off Sounds reliever Alec Zumwalt in the ninth. James Shanks? RBI single through the left side of the infield brought in Hoover to bring the score to its final 8-4.

Hendrickson (3-1) earned the victory while pitching on three days? rest for Nashville. The right-hander allowed three runs on four hits while striking out six batters in five innings.

Anderson (2-3), who played in Nashville from 1998-2000, took the loss after surrendering eight runs (two earned) on eight hits in his three innings of work.

Chris Demaria tossed three scoreless frames behind Hendrickson and has allowed only one run in his 7.0 innings of work since rejoining the Sounds a week ago.

The teams continue the series with a 6 p.m. meeting on Sunday evening at Greer. Right-hander Dennis Sarfate (3-2, 3.13) will make the start for Nashville on three days? rest. The Isotopes will counter with right-hander Nic Ungs (6-4, 3.00).

Nashville Box Score:

Graham Koonce on base four times, Tony Gwynn and Chris Barnwell thrice each;

Final: Brevard County 3, Lakeland (Tigers) 2

Brevard County Site Game Notes:

Gallardo Guns Down Visiting Tigers

Jenny Rennie, Director of Media

On a night that fireworks lit up the skies above Space Coast Stadium, starter Yovani Gallardo displayed his own show by lighting up twelve visiting Lakeland Tigers. With tonight's outing, Gallardo's strikeout total for the season leads the league at 89. Gallardo threw seven strong innings allowing the Tigers just four hits and one run. Bo Hall threw 1.2 innings of relief and picked up the win with Jeremy Lewis earning his third save of the season.

The Manatees edged out the Tigers 3-2 with nine hits and no errors. Lakeland's Jeff Hahn was given the loss Saturday due to a Ryan Braun home run in the seventh inning followed by Steve Sollmann's single that scored Charlie Fermaint in the eighth. Alcides Escobar, Fermaint and Braun all went 2-4 at the plate Saturday night. The Manatees have won four-in-a-row and are 30-24 for the first half of the season.

Brevard County has taken the first three games of the four-game series and look for the sweep on Sunday. First pitch for tomorrow's game is scheduled for 4:00 PM (3:00 Central) and because it is McDonald's Family Sunday, fans can get five tickets for five dollars.

Brevard County Box Score:

C.J. Medlin on base three times; 89 K's, 50 hits allowed and just 17 walks in 64.2 innings for the incredible Yo Gallardo -- he's blowing away his 2005 West Virginia ratios (which were very good, by the way: 110 K's, 100 hits allowed with 51 walks in 121.1 innings)...

Brevard County Game Log:

Ugly pickoff of Medlin in the 5th; nothing but frustration offensively until Ryan Braun's line drive HR in the 7th...

Timely Hitting, Good Pitching Carry Stars

Drew Anderson knocked in four runs to back the solid pitching of Tim Dillard, as Huntsville downed Birmingham 7-3 Saturday night in the second game of a five-game set at the Hoover Met. The Stars have won the first two games of the set, claimed victory in consecutive games for the first time since May 13-14 at Tennessee and improved to 22-33, while the Barons dropped to 24-33 overall and 10-17 at home.

Cory Aldridge delivered a two-out, run-scoring single that plated Chris Getz, who had walked, and Corey Smith scored on a fielding error by third baseman Adam Heether on a Micah Schnurstein ground ball to give the home side a 2-0 lead after the first inning.

Jeff Eure doubled in a run in the second inning to slice the lead to 2-1 but the Stars could not score with runners at second and third and nobody out, as Ozzie Chavez flied out, Steve Moss bounced into a fielder?s choice on which Heether was cut down at the plate and Anderson flied out with the bases loaded to end the threat.

Barons? starter Lance Broadway hit Eure to open the fourth inning, Chavez dropped down a sacrifice bunt, Moss reached on a fielding error by Schnurstein with Eure staying at second and Callix Crabbe walked to load the bases. Anderson came through with the sacks full in his second chance when he laced a triple to the alley in right-center field to chase home all three runners to give the visitors the lead for good at 4-2. Brad Nelson brought Anderson home with a sacrifice fly to push the lead to 5-2 and cap the Stars second four-run frame against Broadway in two games.

Eure opened the fifth inning with a double and Chavez dropped down his second sacrifice bunt of the night that was fielded by the catcher Gustavo Molina, who left the home plate area vacant. Eure realized that, dashed to the plate ahead of the return throw by first baseman Corey Smith that could not be handled by Molina and scored to make it 6-2. Anderson drove in the final run with a fielder?s choice grounder in the seventh.

Dillard retired 16 of 19 batters after the Heether error through the sixth inning and yielded one run in the seventh on a passed ball by Lou Palmisano. He left after 6 2/3 innings and picked up his first win since April 17 at Montgomery. Dillard allowed six hits, fanned a season-high seven and has earned all three of his wins on the road. Matt Yeatman got the final out in the seventh and Brett Evert tossed two scoreless frames to close out the victory.

The series continues Sunday afternoon with Stars right-hander Travis Phelps to the mound against Barons? southpaw Tyler Lumsden. Coverage of the game begins at 1:50 p.m. central time and can be heard on ESPN Radio 1450 AM locally and via the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com.
