Mark's last five starts (including one in which he gave up 6ER in 3IP)...

3.00 ERA

1.16 WHIP

11.1 K/9

That's funny, some poster said the other day that he was a better prospect than this Rogers kid that throws 95+.

I'm gonna have to rethink this now.

That's an amazing line from Rogers, quite possibly the best of his career (probably by far).

Or just the best in a week.

6/2/06

6.2 IP 2H 1ER 2BB 9K

As someone mentioned earlier, Mark has been on fire for almost a month now.

Tonight's game was clearly the best in Rogers' young career, and as a vocal doubter of his pick and his success so far I must step forward and tip my cap. No one has ever doubted his stuff, it's just a matter of putting it together, and he's had two consecutive solid starts now. His ugly outings still out-number his good ones this year, but at least he has three good ones in his last four starts.

I'm so happy that I got a front row seat on the Rogers bandwagon early on. Since I've defender him so many times, I wonder if he'll let me present him in the Hall of Fame?http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif

Seventh Inning Rally Lets Suns Eclipse Stars

A.J. Zapp and Justin Ruggiano delivered back-to-back two-run singles in a four-run seventh inning, as Jacksonville overcame a seven-run deficit to down Huntsville 10-7 Thursday night at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville. The Suns have won all seven games against the Stars this season and improved to 42-20, while the Stars lost their fourth straight to fall to 23-37 overall and 14-18 away from home.

Chin-Lung Hu reached with one out in the seventh on an Ozzie Chavez fielding error, Tony Abreu reached base on a Callix Crabbe misplay and Tydus Meadows walked to load the bases. Zapp then grounded a 2-2 Khalid Ballouli pitch into right field to score Hu and Abreu to give the Suns an 8-7 lead and move Meadows to third. Zapp advanced to second base on a throwing error to the plate by right fielder Travis Ezi and scored along with Meadows on Ruggiano?s line drive single to center field. The seven run comeback was the Suns biggest of the season and gave the home team 17 wins in their last 18 games. Ballouli was tagged with the loss after allowing four unearned runs over an inning and two-thirds of relief work.

Alvis Ojeda tossed scoreless relief in the sixth and seventh innings to earn the win and Carlos Alvarez retired all six hitters he faced and fanned four to earn his first save. The Suns have recorded a save in all seven wins over Huntsville.

Ozzie Chavez knocked in a second inning run with a sacrifice fly to give the visitors the lead and starting pitcher Tim Dillard capped a four-run fourth inning rally with a two-out, three-run home run, the first by a Stars? hurler this season. Adam Heether and Lou Palmisano had run-scoring hits in the fifth inning to push the visitors? advantage to 7-0. Jacksonville starter Danny Muegge yielded all seven runs on nine hits and was removed after five innings.

Dillard blanked the Suns on three singles through the first four innings before giving up five runs in the fifth. Abreu finished the rally with a three-run home run, his second in three days, and the first off Dillard since Tennessee?s Alex Frazier?s two-run blast on April 28 at Joe Davis Stadium. Dillard was taken out after 5 1/3 innings during which he allowed six runs on nine hits and one walk. He has lasted at least five innings in each of his last seven starts.

The five-game series continues Friday night with Stars? right-hander Travis Phelps taking the mound against Suns? right-hander Heath Totten. Coverage of the game begins at 5:50 p.m. central time and can be heard on ESPN Radio 1450 AM locally and via the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com.

I've never seen Rogers pitch before. How does his breaking ball compare to someone like Sheets'?

wibadgers23, most of us have never seen him. His scouting video when drafted showed a fantastic slurvy-breaking ball that was nearly unhittable. The Brewers likely refined it, either asking him to throw a curve or a slider. But the potential for either was evident.

Mark had a good start or two in April, too. I'll bet that's 5 very good efforts for him now. Don't worry folks, there's plenty of room on the bandwagon. I don't expect you to join us yet, but we'll be eagerly awaiting more participants. Gee, I'm on the Krynzel, Gwynn, Dillard, and Rogers bandwagons, among others. Some might not be sold on them, but I feel better than I did back when I was on the Poe, Mieses, Garcia, Scott, Belcher, K. Johnson, Rushford, Gold, etc bandwagons. Not really trying to brag, just trying to point out how we all are wrong often. Hopefully with Mr. Rogers it turns out that some of us are right. If he fulfills his potential even somewhat, I think more of his doubters will gladly admit they were wrong, just as I admit that I was wrong in doubting Corey Hart. I doubted him, despite success. I doubted him despite an MVP award. But now I believe in him as a prospect and part of the future of the Brewers, and I'm happy to say I was foolish.

Sounds Fall To Zephyrs In Road Trip Opener

METAIRIE, La. -- Josh Labandeira's seventh-inning RBI single lifted New Orleans to a 6-5 victory over visiting Nashville on Thursday evening at Zephyr Field in the opener of a four-game series.

After Brandon Larson scored the tying run on a double play, Labandeira delivered a grounder up the middle to give New Orleans the lead for good.

The Zephyrs won their fifth straight game while the Sounds suffered their third consecutive defeat.

Both teams put up two runs in the first. Nelson Cruz and Mike Rivera hit RBI singles for the Sounds, while Larry Broadway delivered a run-scoring single and Henry Mateo scored on an error by third baseman Jermaine Clark for the Zephyrs. Broadway went 3-for-3.

An RBI single by Graham Koonce and a sacrifice fly by Rivera in the third gave Nashville a 4-2 lead. Cruz added a run-scoring double in the fifth.

In the bottom of the fifth, Mateo scored on a forceout by Larson. Brandon Harper's RBI single brought the Zephyrs within 5-4.

Reliever Kevin Gryboski (3-4) earned the win after striking out one in a perfect seventh. Roy Corcoran tossed a scoreless ninth to pick up his fourth consecutive save and Minor League-leading 20th of the season.

Sounds reliever Mitch Stetter (2-3) took the loss after surrendering two runs on three hits in one inning.

Sounds leave bases loaded to end game

The Nashville Sounds left the bases full in the top of the ninth inning as the New Orleans Zephyrs hung on to win 6-5 Thursday night.

The game saw Zephyrs Manager Tim Foli depart in the second inning with heat-related problems. The former major leaguer was taken to an area hospital and there was no word on his condition.

Both teams are now 33-27 going into game two of the four-game series tonight.

Trailing 5-4, New Orleans scored the tying and winning runs in the bottom of the seventh.

After back-to-back singles by Zephyrs Brandon Larson and Larry Broadway, Sounds pitcher Mitch Stetter hit Brandon Harper to load the bases.

Larson scored when Kenny Kelly ground into a double play. Then after Alec Zumwalt replaced Stetter, Josh Labandeira drove in the winning run with a single to right that scored Broadway.

Nashville wasn't done yet. Still down a run in the top of the ninth, Dave Krynzel drew a one-out walk off new reliever Roy Corcoran and Brent Abernathy followed with a single to right to put runners at the corners.

Abernathy then stole second and Nelson Cruz walked to load the bases.

Graham Koonce then struck out swinging for the second out, leaving it up to Mike Rivera to keep the Sounds' hopes alive.

But Rivera flied out to left fielder Henry Mateo, ending the threat.

Both teams scored twice in the first inning.

Nashville got on the scoreboard first. Tony Gwynn led off with a walk and Krynzel followed with a single. Both runners advanced on Abernathy's sacrifice bunt up the first base line and Cruz then flied to left, scoring Gwynn with the first run.

Krynzel then scored to make it 2-0 when Rivera singled to right field.

The Zephyrs evened the score at 2-2 after back-to-back walks to open the bottom half of the inning put Henry Mateo and Bernie Castro at first and second, respectively.

Castro then scored on Larry Broadway's single to left. Mateo stole third and scored on an error by Sounds third baseman Jermaine Clark.

Nashville went up 4-2 in the top of the third and led 5-2 before New Orleans cut into the deficit with two runs in the bottom of the fifth.

The Sounds' third inning saw Krynzel open with a single, advance to second on a walk to Cruz and then score on a Koonce single to right field. That put Cruz on third and he then scored on Rivera's sacrifice fly.

In the top of the fifth, Nashville added a run when Abernathy bunted back to the mound and then reached second on a throwing error by Zephyrs pitcher Billy Traber. Abernathy then scored on a Cruz double to left.

New Orleans answered with two in the bottom of the fifth. Mateo singled, took second on a passed ball, stole third and scored on a forceout at second. Brandon Larson reached first and later scored on Brandon Harper's single to left.

STARS BLOW 7-0 LEAD

Going back to last year, this is the 8th straight loss to Jacksonville, the streak beginning with a 13-8 loss in Keith Stamler's debut on June 28........ Blowing a 7-0 lead is pretty upsetting to the stomach. It's been a long time since the Stars blew one that big. You'd have to go back to July 10, 2000 when six pithers destroyed a 3rd inning 9-1 lead over Orlando at the Joe, and lost 14-10......... Early in the season, our pitching, particularly the bullpen, was the strongest link in a chain weakened by the promotions of Joe Winkelsas and Alex Zumwalt........ After a 6-2, 2.67 performance the first month of the season, since May, the bullpen is 3-11 with four saves and a 3.84 ERA, two of those losses coming this month.

It's a shame since the Stars are at least swinging the bats well....... The team is hitting .273 since ending their record 13-game losing streak. Ron Acuna has hit safely in seven of his last nine games, hitting .375, Drew Anderson was hitting .387 when his eight-game hitting streak came to an end tonight, Callix Crabbe is hitting .385 in his last eight games (although he's driven in only two runs), Jeff Eure has hit safely in six straight (.350), Adam Heether is 8-for-19 in his last five games, and Steve Moss was 12-for-27 (.444) until he went hitless in five trips....... On the other hand, there have been an astounding 42 runners left in scoring position with two out in their last eight games, and in the Stars last four losses, 16. ......... Anderson, despite the hitting streak and nine RBIs, has left eight. Heether has left five and Brad Nelson, off to a slow start since rejoining the Stars, has left six........ Nelson and Lou Palmisano broke out of their slumps with three hits apiece in this game. Palmisano had gone 1-for-12 in the Stars previous three losses, and Nelson was 3-for-24 in his last six games.

The Stars jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 2nd inning on a sacrifice fly by Ozzie Chavez scoring Nelson, the 5th sac fly by the Stars so far this month......... Tim Dillard had set down seven in a row when Nelson kicked off the a four-run 4th inning with a double off the base of the wall in left-center........ A diving stop by Tony Abreu prevented Heether from bringing him in, but Palmisano finished the job with an opposite-field double that landed right on the chalk line, giving the Stars a 2-0 lead. After Travis Ezi worked a two-out walk, Dillard, the Stars' finest hitting pitcher since Jose Garcia, crushed a three-run home run deep to left to make it 5-0........ Dillard is now 5-for-15 on the season with five RBIs.

In the 5th, the Stars proceeded to string a one-out walk by Anderson, then a pair of singles and a double, producing two runs to make it 7-0, but with the bases loaded for Dillard this time, he popped out just inside the line to 3rd baseman Jimmy Rohan.

Then the Suns, who had just clinched the first half Southern Division title, went to work scoring five runs in the bottom half of the 5th....... Back-to-back singles by Justin Ruggiano and Anthony Raglani were followed by a one-out single by A.J. Ellis, putting the Suns on the scoreboard, but the key hit of the inning was a three-run homer by Abreu, the Florida State League batting champ last year thanks in part to a .438 June.

The pendulum had swung the other way....... With one out in the 6th, Anderson and Nelson were unable to bring home Crabbe from 2nd after a single and stolen base and the Stars were retired in order in the 7th, 8th, and 9th innings........ The Suns now came within one run, 7-6, after Dillard left runners on 1st and 2nd for Khalid Ballouli, a few days off the disabled list....... Ballouli went 2-2 on Jimmy Rohan, his first hitter, then Rohan lined a broken bat looper to center field scoring Ruggiano....... A 4-6-3 double play got them out of the inning, but the Stars assisted in helping the Suns finish what they started.

With one out, shortstop Chin-lung Hu bounced a three-hopper that went right between the legs of Chavez, who possibly took his eyes off the ball taking a look at Hu coming out of the batter's box........ Abreu then hit a two-hopper that had another chance at being a double-play ball. Instead, Crabbe, who was in position, simply let the ball go through his legs for another error. That sent Hu to 2nd.

Fate was on a roll, and the team that had won 17 of 18 games and 22 of 27 was the beneficiary...... A slider down and away on a 2-2 count to Tydus Meadows got away from Palmisano for a wild pitch, and now the tying and go-ahead runs were in scoring position....... Meadows walked to load the bases for A.J. Zapp, a former Greenville farmhand....... Zapp delivered them both in on a 2-2 single to the right side. Hu scored, but right fielder Ezi's bad throw to Palmisano enabled Abreu to score the go-ahead run....... Ruggiano then slapped on another insult with a line drive single to center, scoring Meadows and Zapp. Ruggiano was out trying to stretch the hit into a double, but the damage was done, and the Suns finished their comeback, winning 10-7, making a loser of Ballouli....... Carlos Alvarez faced six batters, striking out four for his 1st save....... In each of the Suns' seven wins against the Stars this season, someone has come out of the bullpen to get the save. The Stars have had just four since the start of May.

Friday, Travis Phelps will go for the Stars against Heath Totten....... Totten (4-2, 3.98) has given up 22 earned runs in his last seven starts and was 1-2 with a 4.38 ERA in May.

The Brewers signed their # 1 draft pick, high school pitcher from Virginia, Jeremy Jeffress. The Brewers are assigning him to the Arizona Rookie League. Jeffress had a 0.19 ERA at Halifax County High School in South Boston, Va....... Despite the Brewers' need for hitting in the minor league system, they stocked up on pitching, predominantly right-handed pitching, but their # 2 pick was a Georgia shortstop, who they were able to sign as well....... Brent Brewer will report also to the Arizona Rookie League....... The Brewers also signed # 9 pick right-hander Shawn Ferguson, who will report to Helena (Pioneer), # 10 pick RHP Michael McClendon, # 13 pick RHP Chris Toneguzzi, # 25 pick outfielder Mike Goetz, and # 30 pick catcher Jordan Swaydan........ McClendon, Toneguzzi, and Swayden will also report to Helena....... I've posted the top 40 picks. Just click on "stuff".

www.starsboxscore.com/stuff.htm

Mark Prior beat the Birmingham Barons in a rehab start, Thursday night, throwing 76 pain-free pitches in five nnings, giving up three runs on four hits and striking out four.

Gary Jones, Wednesday night, won his 1,000th minor league game Wednesday night with a win over the Tennessee Smokies.

Elie Alfonzo, who hit .258 as one of six catchers who were used by the Stars in 2002, made his major league debut with the San Francisco Giants Saturday, and made a game-winner out of his first major league hit -- a two-run HR off El Duque (Orlando Hernandez) to give the Giants a 6-4 win over the Mets....... Alfonzo is the 159th former Star to graduate to the majors.

The Florida State League announced their All-Stars and among them is Manatee right-hander Yovani Gallardo, who leads the FSL in strikeouts and is sporting a microscopic 2.18 ERA........ Looks like a winner, Stars fans........ Also joining him on the All-Star team is Josh Wahpepah (3-2, 3.02), 3rd baseman Ryan Braun (.299), 2nd baseman Hernan "the Hurricane" Irabarren (.287, seven doubles), utility player Steve Sollmann (.302), and outfielder Brendan Katin (.287 and a league-leading 20 doubles.)

I've never seen Rogers pitch before. How does his breaking ball compare to someone like Sheets'?

As DHonks mentioned, the Brewers have tweaked his breaking ball and now its a very tight slider, in the John Smoltz mold. BA has reported scouts have told them Rogers slider is a 70 on the scouting scale, which is awesome. His slider supposedly reaches 90 MPH! Rogers has the same ERA and a much better BB/K rate than Smoltz did as a 20 year old. Rogers is a fantastic prospect.

If Mark can keep it in the strikezone, he will dominate, as his stuff is just ridiculously filthy...the only problem is when he starts walking people, because then the hitters can wait until 3-0, or 3-1 and kill the strike's..

he reminds me a lot of daniel cabrera at the moment...when he's good, he owns the game...and when he's not it's 13-0 in the 2nd inning...i hav much higher hopes for mark of course..

A lot of people seem pretty smug about all this, for some reason. Mark is doing OK in A ball, it's not like he's in the majors. It seems too early for smugness, especially when the concerns that people had/have about Rogers seemed to center on the fact that the Brewers have had no luck at all shepherding HS pitchers to the majors, and that Rogers fit the mold of many of the previous guys they had (hard throwers, no control). All of us hope that Rogers will break the mold, and people were definitely overreacting to his bad play over his first year and a half or so, considering that the Brewers control him for a few years yet, but being pessimistic about HS pitchers is , imo, totally reasonable, especially when they have an ERA of 6 or so in A ball.

I'd like to think that Mark being more "left alone" to control a larger portion of his game would result in more of what the Brewers came to baseball Siberia for. There has to be a happy medium between "tweeking" and natural talent. somewhere in the middle is precisely what we are looking at currently. I don't think that there is any perfect pitcher or style but should he continue down the path he is headed ( and his pitching teammates) the Brewers will be a force to be dealt with. I would suspect that the balance of the season that Mark will contribute a lot more than not.

As far as smug goes, naw, the folks that believe in him are just waiting for the process to unfold. The negative bandwagon is much more smug because it's easier to be critical and if you talk enough maybe somebody will listen.

Joe, he's a long ways away from the majors. But he throws 95+ and he's healthy...that makes him a true prospect.I'm glad he isn't doing a lot better, as there'd be talk about rushing the kid...like Yo.

If you're looking at guys at AAA, stats matter. When you're teaching kids how to throw pitches, and get consistent mechanics, stats don't mean a whole lot. I'll take Rogers over some "winner" that throws 85 anyday.
