West Virginia Site Doubleheader Summary:

AUGUSTA TAKES TWO FROM THE POWER

The West Virginia Power went into Tuesday night?s doubleheader against the Augusta GreenJackets with a 3-0 record in the second half, but walked out of Lake Olmstead Stadium with a 3-2 record after being swept in the doubleheader, 5-4 in the first game and they were shut out 2-0 in the second.

The Power scored first in game one in the first inning on Angel Salome?s first of three singles which knocked in Lorenzo Cain to put the Power up 1-0. Augusta tied the game in the bottom of the first on Barry Gunther?s two-out run-scoring single.

The Power took their second lead of the game in the third inning when Mat Gamel doubled off the wall in right field to bring in Lorenzo Cain. The GreenJackets scored three times in the bottom of the third inning to take the lead and never looked back. Anthony Contreras ripped a two-run single and he scored later in the inning on a sacrifice fly from Jose Yens. Augusta added another run in the fifth inning on a Yens RBI single to go up 5-2.

The Power scored twice in the sixth inning to come within a run. Mike Bell began the inning with a solo home run, his seventh of the year and Michael Brantley brought in the second run on a sacrifice fly. The game ended when Gamel was thrown out at home plate trying to score on Bell?s double.

In the second game the Power were held to three hits and were shut out for only the fourth time this season. Ben Copeland brought in the first run for Augusta on a single in the third inning and Jose Yens drove in his third run of the doubleheader on a double in the fourth inning.

In game one Ryan Shaver (7-4) earned the win, Osiris Matos (5) earned the save and Matt Kretzschmar (1-3) obtained the loss. In game two Shairon Martis (2-4) earned the victory, Wayne Foltin (11) got the save and Steve Garrison (2-2) suffered the loss despite allowing only two runs through five innings and struck out seven establishing his new season high. The Power are 42-32 overall and 3-2 in the second half after the losses and the GreenJackets improved to 43-33 overall and 3-2 in the second half after the wins.

The Power will continue the four game series against the GreenJackets Wednesday night. Augusta will start right hander Dan Griffin (5-4, 3.65) and the Power will start left hander Dave Welch (2-4, 3.00). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM (6:05 Central).

Looks like Mabeus just ensured that Thurman will fall to 2-7, by giving up a 6 spot in a third of an inning. Man, 7 losses with an ERA under 3. Talk about lack of run support.

Chris Mabeus has just been dreadful, regardless of uniform, since the second inning implosion of his only big league appearance, when he was firing balls to the backstop from every angle. His head is literally spinning right now.

Hendrickson Strong Again As Sounds Win 3-2

NASHVILLE, Tenn. ? Nashville right-hander Ben Hendrickson turned in another solid outing and Brent Abernathy went 2-for-3 with a go-ahead two-run double to lead the Sounds to a 3-2 victory over the cross-state rival Memphis Redbirds on Tuesday evening in front of 9,117 fans at Greer Stadium.

Hendrickson (6-2), who earned his sixth win to pull into a tie with Dennis Sarfate for the team lead, held the Redbirds to one run on nine hits while striking out six batters over 6 1/3 innings of work. The right-hander?s ERA dropped to 1.95 on the year following his team-best eighth quality start in 11 outings for Nashville.

The Sounds (42-35) improved to 9-4 in one-run decisions at home, where they hold a 27-14 record on the year.

Both teams jumped on the scoreboard in the first inning. Memphis grabbed a 1-0 lead when Skip Schumaker, who paced the visitors with a 3-for-4 evening, scored on Brian Daubach?s line-drive RBI double to left that Abernathy, the Sounds? left fielder, lost in the early-evening sun. Nashville tied it up in the bottom of the frame with a two-out run of its own when team RBI leader Nelson Cruz plated Abernathy on a single to left.

The Sounds took a 3-1 lead in the third inning on a two-run Abernathy double to center off Memphis starter Dennis Tankersley that scored Tony Gwynn and Zach Sorensen (2-for-4). Abernathy finished 2-for-3 in the contest, his 21st multiple-hit effort of the season (2nd-best on club).

Following Abernathy?s go-ahead knock, Redbirds hurlers retired 15 straight Nashville batters before Gwynn ripped his 16th double of the year in the bottom of the eighth.

Memphis right fielder Chris Duncan pulled the visitors within a run in the top of the eighth with a two-out solo homer off Sounds reliever Wilton Chavez that struck the guitar-shaped scoreboard in left-center. The blast, his seventh of the year, made it a 3-2 game and accounted for the first run allowed by Chavez in his last 12.0 innings of work over eight appearances.

Tankersley (3-9) pulled into a tie for the Pacific Coast League lead by drawing his ninth loss after allowing three runs (two earned) on seven hits in six frames.

Sounds reliever Alec Zumwalt worked a scoreless ninth inning to notch his team-leading sixth save of the year.

The teams continue the series with a noon matinee on Wednesday afternoon. Nashville sends right-hander Dennis Sarfate (6-3, 2.87) to the hill to face Memphis right-hander John Webb (3-6, 4.55).

Homer Helps to Almost Make History

Homer Bailey tossed six hitless, scoreless innings and Chattanooga came within two outs of a no-hitter in a 7-1 win over Huntsville Tuesday night in the fourth of a five-game set at Joe Davis Stadium. The Lookouts have won three of the first four games to improve to 6-3 in the second half, while the Stars slipped to 3-6 in the second half and fell for the 20th time in their last 22 home contests.

Bailey walked two in the first inning and stranded runners at the corners by striking out Ryan Braun, who he had also whiffed in the Florida State League All-Star Game before both were promoted to double-A last week. J.C. Boscan reached on a fielding error to lead off in the second inning before Bailey retired the next 12 hitters he faced, fanning five. Steve Moss reached second base on an Aaron Herr fielding error to open the sixth inning, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Callix Crabbe and was then tagged out on a Drew Anderson ground ball fielded by Herr, who threw to first to double up Anderson and end the inning. Bailey, the top rated prospect in the Reds organization, fanned six, walked two and has thrown 12 scoreless innings in his first two starts for the Lookouts.

Carlos Alvarado retired all three hitters he faced in the seventh and Brock Till retired the Stars in order in the eighth before David Shafer, the league leader in saves took over in the ninth. Shafer fanned Moss for the first out and Crabbe drove his first pitch over the wall in right field, over a leaping Rick Asadoorian for a home run, his second of the series and third of the year. Shafer, just activated from the disabled list, retired Anderson and Brad Nelson to end the game.

Corey Thurman blanked the Lookouts for four innings before Javon Moran singled home Asadoorian with two outs in the fifth to push across the game?s first run. Thurman then set down the next seven hitters he faced and departed after seven frames, allowing a run on three hits and fanning eight. Thurman suffered his seventh loss of the season and suffered from a lack of support again. The Stars have scored 11 runs in the 11 starts he has made that he has not won.

Aaron Herr broke open a close game in the eighth with a three-run double off of Chris Mabeus, who was charged with six runs in just a third of an inning. He allowed three hits and walked three and all six batters who reached scored.

The series wraps up Wednesday night with Stars? right-hander Tim Dillard taking the hill against Lookouts right-hander Travis Chick. Coverage of the game begins at 6:50 p.m. central time and can be heard locally on ESPN Radio 1450 AM and via the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com.

Huntsville almost hitless

Crabbe's homer in 9th ends Lookouts' no-hitter

By JOHN FERRY

Huntsville Times Sports Staff, jferry@htimes.com

Chattanooga may have been the visiting team for Tuesday night's game against the Huntsville Stars, but Lookouts starter Homer Bailey had more than a few supporters present.

"See you in Cincinnati," said a couple of them at Joe Davis Stadium after Bailey pitched six hitless innings and helped the Lookouts no-hit the Stars until Callix Crabbe's one-out homer in the ninth.

Crabbe's blast was the only hit for the Stars as they lost 7-1 and fell to 3-6 in the second half. The game was a pitching duel until Chattanooga broke it open with a six-run eighth.

Neither team had a hit until the fifth inning and losing pitcher Corey Thurman gave up only three hits and one run in seven innings, striking out eight.

Bailey, 20, is highly regarded in the Cincinnati Reds organization and showed why against the Stars. He struck out six and walked two before reaching his pitch count limitation.

Three relievers followed Bailey. If they'd been able to complete the no-hitter, it would have been the first involving the Stars since Carolina did it on April 14, 2004.

"Bailey is definitely up and coming," Chattanooga manager Jayhawk Owens said. "We project him as a starter in the major leagues."

Bailey made just his second appearance for Chattanooga since being called up from the Single-A Florida State League. He said facing Double-A batters is a big challenge.

"They are a lot better hitters," he said. "They are very patient. I just want to stick with the game plan and keep attacking the hitters."

Carlos Alvarado pitched the seventh for the Lookouts, Brock Till took over in the eighth and David Shafer, just off eight days on the disabled list, entered in the ninth.

Chattanooga broke the scoreless tie in the fifth. Rick Asadoorian drew a walk, Miguel Perez reached on an infield single, which was the first hit of the game, and Javon Moran singled to left to score Asadoorian.

The Lookouts put the game out of reach in the eighth when they sent 10 batters to the plate and scored six times.

Aaron Herr's bases-loaded double to deep right-center scored three runs for the big blow. Asadoorian's ground rule double got another run across, and the other runs scored on a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly.

Huntsville finally broke through in the ninth off Shafer. After Steve Moss struck out, Crabbe lofted his third homer of the year, his second in this series.

Thurman, who entered the game with a 2.45 earned run average, continued a string of hard luck, with his record falling to 2-7. "Bailey threw a good game," Thurman said. "I had to step up and keep my team in the game."

Starting pitchers for Huntsville in the series against Chattanooga have allowed - in order - two earned runs, no earned runs, no earned runs and one earned run in the four games to date. But the Stars are only 1-3 in the series.

Chris Mabeus took over for Thurman in the eighth but got just one out while facing seven batters. Matt Yeatman finished the game for the Stars.

Tonight's game starts at 7:05, with Tim Dillard (5-4) ptiching for the Stars against Travis Cheek (4-3).

Sox hold off Brewers

By TOM COTTON - Helena Independent Record Sports Editor

For the second night in a row, the Brewers lost their Pioneer League contest with Great Falls by a 5-3 count. It was Helena?s fifth consecutive loss and set them three games behind Billings and Great Falls in the North Division Standings.

Helena?s last three losses have come by a total of six runs and this one again wasn?t decided until the latter stages of the game. Great Falls broke a 3-3 tie in the sixth inning, ironically on a nice defensive play. With one out and Franklin Batista on third, Santo Garcia sent a hard line drive towards Brewer second baseman Taylor Green who made a sensational stop. However, Green was only able to reach first to record the out and Batista came home for the score.

Great Falls added an insurance run one inning later on an RBI single by Christian Marrero.

The game saw Helena struggle at times offensively as they scratched out just six hits.

The three runs was their highest offensive output since a June 22 win over Missoula and all three came courtesy of the long ball.

Great Falls starter Ramon Sanchez gave up just one hit through the first three innings, but the wheels came off in the fourth inning.

Taylor Green launched a 2-0 pitch by Sanchez over the right field wall to cut the Great Falls lead to 3-1.

Designated hitter Andy Bouchie followed suit later in the inning when he drove a Sanchez offering for a solo home run. The bomb was his first of the season.

?He came right after them for the first three innings and then they hit his first-pitch fastball,? Great Falls manager Bobby Tolan said about Sanchez. ?He made some adjustments and went to his breaking ball.?

Helena tied the game up in the fifth with another solo home run. This one came off the bat of Carlos De La Cruz, who cracked his first of the season.

That would be the entire offensive output for the Brewers, but they did have some chances to push across some more runs. They had runners on base in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings, but were unable to bring the runners home.

Helena left five men on base, but Great Falls also stranded their share of runners as they left 11 on base. The White Sox have left 24 runners on base over their last two games.

Helena starter Brae Wright used guile to hold Great Falls to just three runs during his four innings on the mound.

Garcia, John Shelby and Tyler Reves had back-to-back singles for Great Falls in the first inning, but Wright wriggled out of trouble, yielding just one run.

Great Falls loaded the bases in the second, but could only manage one score and that was unearned when De La Cruz committed an error. The second frame also saw a failed suicide squeeze attempt. Batista?s bunt was handled by Helena catcher D.J. Neyens who tagged Reymundo Tavares for the out.

The White Sox were aggressive on the basepaths, stealing three bases in the game. They attempted five steals in the contest.

?When you run and have speed you create havoc in the field and for me as a former base runner, I know what that is like,? Tolan said.

Neyens had a nice day at the plate, going 2-for-3 for Helena. Jose Beltre was the hard-luck loser for Helena.

He didn?t allow an earned run and didn?t give up a hit over two innings.

The Brewers will try to break out of their slump tonight when they end a three-game set with the White Sox. Tim Murphey is scheduled to start for Great Falls. Roque Mercedes is the scheduled starter for Helena.

Jon Ebelt, Helena Independent Record Staff Photographer - Helena Brewer second baseman Taylor Green, left, reaches to make the catch a split second too late as Great Falls baserunner John Shelby advances to the bag safely Tuesday at Kindrick Legion Field.

Sounds get win over Memphis

Abernathy makes catch to help Hendrickson win

By JEFF LOCKRIDGE

Tennessean Staff Writer

Before learning he was a Pacific Coast League All-Star, Sounds pitcher Ben Hendrickson went out and threw like one.

Then teammate Brent Abernathy made an all-star catch.

The Sounds got some early run support for Hendrickson and Abernathy made a game-saving grab in the left-field corner to beat the Memphis Redbirds 3-2 on Tuesday night before an announced crowd of 9,117 at Greer Stadium.

"It's great to have quality starts," said Hendrickson (6-2), who has seven quality starts in his last eight outings, allowed one run and scattered nine hits over 6 1/3 innings to lower his ERA to 1.95. He got a standing ovation when he left with a 3-1 lead in the seventh.

Memphis got a run in the eighth when Chris Duncan hit a solo homer off Wilton Chavez. The Redbirds threatened to tie the game in the ninth when Derek Wathan dropped a two-out bunt and went all the way to third on a throwing error by catcher Mike Rivera.

Moments later Abernathy saved the win, tracking Skip Schumaker's deep fly just inside the foul line to preserve a rare one-run win for the Sounds.

Nashville is now 12-20 in one-run games.

"It carried farther than I thought," Sounds Manager Frank Kremblas said. "He did a good job. He's been out there enough so that it's not a big deal."

The Sounds snapped a 1-1 tie in the third on Abernathy's two-run double off Redbirds starter Dennis Tankersley (3-9) to score Tony Gwynn and Zach Sorensen.

Abernathy lost sight of Brian Daubach's fly ball in the sun in the top of the first. The ball glanced off Abernathy's glove for a double, scoring Schumaker for a 1-0 lead.

It was Abernathy's 11th start in left field. He's started 33 games in the infield and 17 as a designated hitter.

In addition to Hendrickson, Kremblas said that Rivera, Gwynn and outfielder Nelson Cruz were named to the Pacific Coast League All-Star team.

Koonce stands out: In a month where the Sounds have lost their swing, Graham Koonce found his.

Koonce has been the one bright spot for Nashville's offense in June. He was 0-for-3 on Tuesday, but is batting .311 over his last 11 games ? raising his season average to .238 ? and has six home runs and 16 RBIs in June.

The Sounds came into Tuesday's game with a PCL-worst .223 team batting average this month and have hit .197 since June 11.

Suspension possible: A decision could come as early as today whether Sounds hitting coach Gary Pettis receives a suspension stemming from his ejection in the seventh inning of Monday's game.

Umpire Angel Campos ejected Pettis after he argued a runner's interference call. Pettis may have bumped Campos during their heated exchange.

Famous name: Sounds shortstop Ozzie Chavez, who was promoted from Huntsville and joined the club June 21, shares names with a Hall of Fame shortstop.

His full name is Ozzie Smith Silfa Chavez. Chavez has started once since making his Triple-A debut and is 0-for-5 with Nashville.

All aces: The Sounds lead the PCL with a team ERA of 3.36, nine hundredths of a run better than Round Rock. Fresno has a league-worst 4.98 ERA. Nashville's best season on the mound came in 1980 when the club finished with a 3.11 ERA and record 97 wins.

Good cause: Approximately $7,500 was raised in donations at Tuesday's Faith Night concert featuring the Grammy Award-winning band Jars of Clay to help place a clean-water well in Kenya.

No-trade keeps red-hot Hendrickson in Nashville

By Nate Rau, Nashville City Paper Sports Correspondent

Ben Hendrickson was at his laptop on Tuesday afternoon when he read the headline, ?Dodgers trade for Hendrickson.? Hendrickson thought Milwaukee had dealt him to Los Angeles and his days as a Nashville Sound were over.

It turns out the trade actually was between Tampa Bay and the Dodgers and the Hendrickson in question was Devil Rays starter Mark Hendrickson. Nashville benefited from the non-trade of its ace as Hendrickson helped the Sounds pick up a 3-2 victory over Memphis at Greer Stadium.

?I was online and I saw, ?Dodgers trade for Hendrickson,?? Hendrickson said. ?Then I opened it up and it said they got Hendrickson and Hall and I was like, ?Holy crap!? I thought it was [Milwaukee Brewers infielder Bill Hall]. Then I realized Milwaukee wouldn?t trade Billy Hall.?

Hendrickson has been on a tear since he was sent down by Milwaukee in May. This time he scattered nine hits over 6.1 innings, but allowed only one run.

Hendrickson (7-2) lowered his ERA to 1.95, which is good for second in the Pacific Coast League. His only run came on a first-inning double from Brian Daubach that left fielder Brent Abernathy, who typically plays infield, had a chance to catch.

?I threw a lot of fastball, changeups tonight. I couldn?t throw my curveball because of my finger,? Hendrickson said.

Abernathy was instrumental in all three Sounds runs.

He singled and scored in the first inning.

In the third he hit a two-run double, giving Nashville the lead for good. Abernathy finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run. Zach Sorenson also collected two hits for the Sounds (42-35).

Alec Zumwalt stranded the tying run on third base to pick up the save. Nashville got the final out the hard way, with Abernathy making a highlight reel catch in left.

?That was a tough play in the first inning, because it was a liner and it?s hard to see out there,? Sounds manager Frank Kremblas said. ?He did a nice job making the catch [in the ninth].?

Team aids Blood: Water Mission

The Sounds hosted their fourth installment of Faith Night on Tuesday with a crowd of 9,117 in attendance. The large turnout was thanks largely to performances by contemporary Christian music superstars Jars of Clay and Derek Webb.

The artists are actively involved with Blood: Water, Mission, a ministry which aims to provide clean drinking water for a community in Kenya.

In conjunction with the ministry, the Sounds donated $7,500, although that amount will increase because of post-game donations from fans leaving Greer.

The Sounds are hoping to provide a clean water drinking well for an entire community in Kenya.

Augusta's Ben Copeland slides safely into second base as West Virginia's Michael Bell tries to haul in a poor throw from the outfield during the first game of their doubleheader. Doubles by Copeland and David Maroul in the third inning helped put Augusta on top 4-2.

Interestingly enough, I did the same thing yesterday. I nearly fainted when I first read the headline.
