This was mentioned by Kevin Goldstein on Baseball Prospectus:

"Like Veal, Brewers center fielder Charlie Fermaint has been a long-time KG favorite, and a pair of scouts had similar opinions on him, seeing him as a possible starting outfielder in the big leagues now, with the potential to improve that rating."

The word that caught my attention was "now." That's an incredible thing to say, especially since it came from 2 scouts. I thought it was worth mentioning.

I think they meant the project him to be a major league starter based on what they have seen now, but that he could turn out to be even more special and that projection could get even better in the future.

I don't think they meant he could start in Milwaukee tomorrow if there was an injury.

That's still high praise, as most players don't project so highly.

This afternoon's abysmal Milwaukee loss seems like it's now the perfect opportunity to give myself a night off from the keyboard tonight and lose my sorrow elsewhere.

I still invite everyone to listen and follow via our Link Report, but if not pogokat, then colby, or And That, or whoever wishes to assist this evening, please do so.

Just throwing this out there how about nominating Drew Anderson for a sneaky good performance, so far this year. His Sta line going into tonights game for Huntsville

.350 .410 .283 (obp/Slg/BA). I don't know that this translates to being a starter, but considering the giant sucking sound that is the Southern league on offense that's some solid production. Keeping in mind that Corey wins league MVP with only 40 more points of OPS than that, I think Drew maybe underappreciated as a prospect.

Sheets is pitching very well tonight for the Sounds. The last 3-4 innings have gone very quick as he's recording a lot of fast outs. The game is starting to have a big-league feel as Seth Etherton and Donovan Osborne have pitched in relief for Omaha.

de la Rosa so-so at AA: 6 IP, 9 H, 3 ER, 3 K, 1 BB

What an awesome appearance by Jeffress.

Just throwing this out there how about nominating Drew Anderson for a sneaky good performance, so far this year.

LouisEly mentioned this a couple of weeks ago, and Anderson has always been somewhat of a sleeper prospect that I like to mentioned every so often. While he doesn't have much power (or at least hasn't hit for much power), he has always hit, drawn walks and shown decent offensive potential at each level he's played at. The Brewers drafted him when he was a little older, so he's never been considered a prospect, but I could definitely see him having a big-league career similar to a left-handed hitting reserve corner OF/1B like Mark Sweeney.

No Hernan tonight; I'm guessing he gets a promotion very soon, as Crabbe has been nothing but disappointing in his second full season at AA. Hernan has been on a tear, too, of late. Will they split Alcides and Hernan, though?

Jeffress' line was definitely impressive. Brewer's 11th error is not, however. Not much Lenny LeClerq in the last few days, too. He was said to have the tools on draft day, but when will he get the chance to move out of the desert? At least he's shown improvement in his three years in the AZL...

Patrick, were there any comments on what pitches Sheets was throwing or velocity? Thanks in advance.

Eure starting at SS tonight? Is there anything he can't do? He's been hitting pretty well lately, as well. Is he the next Vinny Rottino super-sub?

And is Crew turning himself into a prospect? It was kind of surprising when he was bumped up to Brevard County and even more so that he's doing very well (over .300 now). And he's playing every day, so the Brewers must think highly of him. Not bad for a 40th rounder.

so why is gillespie still in Helena I mean he was a first team all-american lead is team to the championship and was just incredible now he is just rappin other teams in rookie ball get him promoted!! Same for Chapman he deserves it 2. Only problem is nowhere to but them which is a shame. I hate when players dont get challanged enoug hand just tear a league apart. Jeffress 3IP 0 hits, runs, and walks 5 k's. Did Rogers get promoted to Helena in his first year because if he did im sure Jeffress has been more deserving plus u get him up now he starts in WV. Im def on the Jeffress bandwagon!!!!

Nice to see Errecart's two dingers tonight. He's been heating up lately - hopefully the last week or so has been a sign that he's starting to find his mojo again.

Great outing by Parillo too. Hopefully the bad start in West Virginia was a result of being hurt, and hopefully he's starting to find his mojo again also.

Sheets, Abernathy Lead Sounds To 3-1 Victory

OMAHA ? Ben Sheets picked up a victory in his rehab start and Brent Abernathy belted a two-run home to lead the Nashville Sounds to a 3-1 victory over the Omaha Royals on a blazing Wednesday evening at Rosenblatt Stadium, where the game time temperature was 105 degrees.

With the win, Nashville (53-43) picked up its seventh victory in the last nine contests and improved to 10 games over .500 for the first time since May 7 when the Sounds were 20-10.

Sheets (2-1), who picked up his second victory in three PCL starts this season, worked 6 1/3 innings in his rehab outing and allowed one run on three hits while walking two batters and striking out four. The right-hander threw 87 pitches, 54 for strikes.

Omaha took a 1-0 lead against Sheets in the bottom of the second inning. Mike Aviles led off the frame with a single before being erased on a Rick Bell fielder?s choice. Bell moved to third on a Matt Tupman single to left before scoring the game?s first run on an Andres Blanco forceout grounder.

Abernathy spotted the visitors a 2-1 lead in the top of the third when he smacked a two-out, two-run homer to left off Royals starter Ryan Baerlocher. Jermaine Clark, who had reached on an error by right fielder Chad Allen, scored on the roundtripper, Abernathy?s fourth of the year and first on the road.

Nashville upped its lead to 3-1 in the seventh when Graham Koonce, who finished 3-for-4 on the evening, doubled to open the frame against Omaha reliever Seth Etherton then scored on Zach Sorensen?s two-out RBI single.

Baerlocher (4-4) took the loss after he allowed two unearned runs on three hits while striking out six batters over his six frames of action.

Steve Bray and Mitch Stetter each worked a scoreless inning of relief behind Sheets for Nashville before Allan Simpson came on to record the final two outs, striking out both batters he faced, to notch his eighth save of the year.

Nashville outfielder Nelson Cruz went 1-for-4 in the contest to extend his hitting streak to eight games.

The teams wrap up the four-game set with a 12:05 p.m. matinee on Thursday afternoon. Sounds right-hander Dennis Sarfate (7-5, 3.78) will take the mound to face Omaha right-hander Denny Bautista (1-3, 6.60).

Sheets sharp in rehab outing against Omaha Royals

BY ROB WHITE

OMAHA WORLD-HERALD STAFF WRITER

Omaha manager Mike Jirschele summed up the performance of rehabbing major leaguer Ben Sheets pretty quickly.

"We didn't hit too many balls hard," Jirschele said.

Sheets allowed one run on three hits in 6 1/3 innings before leaving a bit ahead of schedule because a blister was beginning to form on his right middle finger on Wednesday night. Nashville picked up a 3-1 victory before about 1,000 (2,031 paid) at Rosenblatt Stadium, where the game-time heat index was 107 degrees.

"I thought he threw the ball well," Jirschele said. "I don't think he was as sharp as when he's in the big leagues, but when he had to make pitches he did."

Sheets, who will make $9.6 million this season, has been out since May with tendinitis in his right shoulder. Wednesday was his third rehabilitation outing. He and the Milwaukee Brewers are hopeful that his next start will be in the majors.

"He's ready," said Nashville catcher Chad Moeller, who spent most of this season as the Brewers' backup catcher. "His stuff is there. His command isn't as sharp as he wants it to be, but it's still pretty darn good. He can go up there and be just fine."

Sheets was on a 100-pitch limit, but threw just 87 - 54 of them strikes. Nashville manager Frank Kremblas said Sheets' fastball topped out at 96 mph.

"His command was a little shaky the first couple of innings," Kremblas said. "But his velocity was up, which was good, and he threw some sharp breaking balls."

The run scored by the Royals could have been avoided, but the Sounds were unable to turn an inning-ending double play in the second.

Sheets, the hero of the 2000 Olympic team who also struck out 18 Atlanta Braves in a 2004 game, said he didn't view the near-blister as discouraging.

He pitched around singles by veterans Chad Allen and Kerry Robinson in the first inning, getting strikeouts against both Shane Costa and Mike Coolbaugh. Costa struck out three times - twice against Sheets - and had his 16-game hitting streak come to an end.

Sheets appeared to escape the second inning when Andres Blanco hit a ground ball, but shortstop Jermaine Clark dropped the throw to second and had to pick it up and step on the bag. Only one out was recorded as a run scored.

Omaha didn't get a hit against Sheets after the second inning. He retired eight in a row before walking Blanco with one out in the fifth, then got the next five before leaving. He used 38 pitches through two innings, then 49 over the next 41/3. He issued two walks and struck out four.

"It took a while to get going, but I got going," Sheets said. "That was me just not really having it together the first couple of innings."

Sheets said he mixed in his curveball with a handful of changeups and 10 to 12 cutters.

"He was able to work on some things he normally wouldn't in a major league game," Moeller said. "That may have cost him a couple of pitches, but that's the only way you can do it and there's no danger in doing it here."

Former Omaha Royal Brent Abernathy lined a two-out, two-run homer into the left field bleachers in the top of the third to put the Sounds in front 2-1.

"He has good strike zone discipline and he battles up there," Jirschele said. "If you make a mistake he hurts you. He plays the game the way you like everybody to play it."

The runs were unearned because Omaha right fielder Chad Allen dropped Clark's fly ball for an error to lead off the inning.

Omaha starter Ryan Baerlocher (4-4) was the hard-luck loser. The right-hander allowed just two unearned runs on three hits through six innings. He didn't walk a batter and struck out six.

Omaha's Kerry Robinson tries to get back to first base as Nashville's Brent Abernathy applies the tag in the first inning. Robinson was called safe.

Final: Carolina (Marlins) 5, Huntsville 4

Huntsville Site Game Summary:

Bear Delivers Decisive Blow in Mudcats Win

Ryan Bear singled home the game-winning run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift Carolina to a second straight 5-4 come-from-behind win over Huntsville Wednesday night in the second game of a five-game set at Five County Stadium in Zebulon. The Mudcats improved to 11-16 in the second half and sent the Stars to their fifth straight loss and to a mark of 10-17 in the second half.

Khalid Ballouli entered the game in the bottom of the ninth to protect a one-run lead for Huntsville and promptly walked lead off man J.C. Muniz. Patrick Arlis popped up a bunt attempt that Ballouli tried to make a sliding catch and could not, as the ball landed in between he and catcher Lou Palmisano for an infield single that moved Muniz to second base. Rex Rundgren advanced the runners with a sacrifice bunt and Frank Moore was intentionally passed to load the bases. Pinch-hitter Kevin Randel flied out to shallow left field for the second out before Lee Mitchell was hit on an 0-1 pitch to force in Muniz with the tying run. Bear then sliced a line drive single into right field on a 1-0 offering to deliver Arlis with the decisive run and send the Stars to their 14th loss in 19 games decided by one run.

Trailing 3-2 entering the ninth, the Stars tied the game on a double by Palmisano that scored Brad Nelson and moved Jeff Eure to third base. Callix Crabbe was intentionally passed to load the bases and pinch-hitter J.C. Boscan flied out to right field to plate Eure with the go-ahead run. It was the Stars? third pinch-hit RBI of the series, matching their total for the entire season leading up to the last two games. Kevin Cave replaced Matt Yourkin and walked Ron Acuna to re-load the bases before Steve Moss flied out to end the inning.

Eure?s two-run home run in the fourth, his team-leading ninth of the year, gave the visitors a 2-0 lead that lasted only until the bottom of the frame when Muniz doubled in a pair to get the game tied. Brett Carroll led off the home sixth with a triple and scored one out later on a wild pitch by starter Jorge De La Rosa, who was charged with three runs on nine hits over six innings. Carolina starter James Russ allowed two runs on five hits over seven innings.

The series continues Thursday night with Stars? right-hander Yovani Gallardo taking the hill against Mudcats? right-hander Trevor Hutchinson. Coverage of the game begins at 6:00 p.m. central time and can be heard locally on ESPN Radio 1450 AM and through the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com.

Connor Falkenbach recorded the final six outs for the Blue Jays (14-13), who snapped a three-game losing streak.

Brewers batter Raptors

By KEVIN SHIVELY - IR Sports Writer

The Helena Brewers got hot at the plate Wednesday night, recovering from Tuesday?s loss to win 10-3 over the Ogden Raptors.

The win closes out the series with the Brewers picking up two of the three games.

?The guys have a plan and we just encourage them to stick to it,? said Helena hitting coach Johnny Narron. ?Our hitting instructor Jim Skaalen is in town this week so that always helps pump the guys up.?

The Brewers had 12 hits in the game, including a pair of home runs from first baseman Chris Errecart.

?Errecart put two balls out of sight,? said Narron. ?He had two really key hits.?

The slugger had his first homer in the fifth, with Cole Gillespie on first and no outs.

J.R. Hopf followed with a walk, and Jordan Swaydan drove him in with a pop fly.

Hopf?s run made the score 8-0.

Errecart sent another pitch out of the park in the sixth, scoring Taylor Green and bringing the score to 10-1.

The four RBI sent Errecart past Stephen Chapman in that category, making him the team leader with 23. Chapman had two in the game, bringing him to 22.

Both hitters were 2-for-4 in the game.

?Chapman really continues to be solid,? said Narron. ?He?s matured a lot as a hitter.?

Chapman started the scoring for the Brewers in the third inning, driving Brad Miller around with a triple.

Helena scored four more runs in the fourth on a series of singles and a throwing error. The inning finally ended when Miller was caught at the plate on a double steal.

Along with Errecart and Chapman, Miller, Gillespie and Chucky Caufield each had a pair of hits.

Ogden?s Rick Taloa scored in the sixth on a solo home run.

Taloa has been a powerhouse against the Brewers, hitting two out of the park Tuesday night as well.

In the eighth, Matt Berezay homered for the Raptors and Jeremy Brown crossed the plate on a single to center from Parker Brooks.

Helena rounded up two outs in the ninth and pitcher Brian Logan ended the contest by striking out Jesus Soto.

Brandon Parillo (2-2, 3.12) picked up the win for the Brewers, pitching five innings of three-hit ball. Parillo struck out four and walked only two.

Steve Palazzolo came in for two innings, allowing three hits of his own and Logan rounded out the final two innings.

Charles Dasni (2-3) was awarded the loss for the Raptors, pitching four innings and giving up five runs, three of which were earned.

The Brewers now face a four-game homestand against the Orem Owls.

Helena will turn to Chris Jean (2-0, 5.09) and Orem will throw David Herndon (1-2, 3.66).

The first pitch will be thrown at 7:05 PM (8:05 Central).

Jon Ebelt, IR Staff Photographer - Ogden?s Scott Van Slyke, right, is out at second base after being tagged by Helena?s Taylor Green Wednesday in Brewers action at Kindrick Legion Field. It was a call Van Slyke felt should have gone the other way as the Raptor voiced his displeasure to the field umpire while trotting off the field.
