Huntsville: RHP Corey Thurman at home vs. Birmingham (White Sox), 6:50 PM pre-game, 7:05 gametime

Tonight's game has been postponed due to heavy rains. (Greatly needed, but at the wrong time) No make-up date has been announced, but the Stars finish the season with a 5-game series at Hoover Met.

Hurricane is up to .334 after 2/3 in the first game and now 1/1 in the second. He is on a real roll lately.
"Dustin Pedroia doesn't have the strength or bat speed to hit major-league pitching consistently, and he has no power......He probably has a future as a backup infielder if he can stop rolling over to third base and shortstop." Keith Law, 2006

There's a good one going in Savannah tonight. Ferguson with a very strong outing. Gives up only two hits; hard to beat that...

The Hurrican really needs to get the bump. You don't suppose he's being held back due to the corked bat episode, do you (pl)? Brendan Katin is an XBH machine.

Final, Game One: Dunedin (Blue Jays) 4, Brevard County 1

Brevard County Site Game One Summary:

Butler lifts Jays in opener

Jacob Butler hit a go-ahead three-run homer as Dunedin posted a 4-1 win over visiting Brevard County in the opener of Friday's doubleheader.

Butler, just 3-for-24 in his first seven games with the Blue Jays, followed consecutive second-inning singles by Carlo Cota and Christian Snavely with his first homer to erase a 1-0 deficit.

Chris Gutierrez homered to start the third for Dunedin (19-16), which has won five of its last seven games.

Kurt Isenberg (1-1) allowed a run on three hits and three walks in five innings. He struck out six en route to his first win in three starts with Dunedin.

T.J. Gornati tossed a scoreless sixth and Connor Falkenbach pitched a perfect seventh for his third save.

Brevard County starter Bo Hall (5-3) surrendered four runs on four hits, including both homers, in three innings.

Hernan Iribarren had half of Brevard County's four hits and scored on a sacrifice fly by Freddy Parejo in the second for the Manatees (56-49), who have dropped four of five. -- Carl Dispoto/MLB.com

Looks like Mike Jones is pitching just effectively enough to maintain his 40-man roster spot; he'll need to be in Milwaukee for keeps in 2008 -- that's a long way from three-inning stints in the Florida State League...

The Power tied the game on Nestor Corredor?s two out RBI double in the eighth inning. The Gnats took the lead again in the bottom of the eighth on Dee Brown?s run scoring double. Down to their final strike, the Power received a big two out RBI double from Mike Bell to tie the game at 2-2. The game ended in the bottom of the eleventh inning when Tim Pahuta stepped in with runners on first and second base, and ripped the game winning RBI double down the right field line.

Man, that roster looks pretty depleted without cruz, hart, or tgj

I guess that's what Melvin meant when he said he wasn't keen on making (at the time) Indy a winner. If they produce major league players, they are a success no matter what the result.

Final: Helena 5, Great Falls (White Sox) 3

Helena site Game Summary

Brewers Take Down White Sox

The Helena Brewers matched a season high winning streak at three Friday night, as they overtook the Great Falls White Sox 5-3. Great Falls got on the board early in the first inning, scoring two, thanks in part to Helena?s two errors. The Brewers responded in the bottom half scoring one from a Cole Gillespie double. Helena would strike again in the bottom of the fourth, with a Chris Errecart two run bomb. Both teams scored one in the sixth, and Helena tacked on another in the bottom of the eighth to put the score at 5-3. Travis Wendte came on to pitch three no hit innings for the Brew crew, striking out four in the process. The two teams will face off again Saturday night at 7:05.

Cole Gillespie should be somewhere in A ball..or at the very least, he should open 2007 in High A

Brewers end half with win

By TOM COTTON - Independent Record Sports Editor

The Helena Brewers had a nice ending to a disappointing first half Friday night.

The Brewers picked up a 5-3 win over Great Falls at Kindrick Legion Field to conclude the first-half of their Pioneer League campaign.

The good news for Helena is that they go into the second half with a three-game winning streak. The bad news is they finished the first-half in last-place with a 15-23 mark.

?More than anything, the last three years, the team that has won the first-half has also won the second half so it is good to get some wins against the team that is in second place,? said Helena manager Ed Sedar.

Sedar said the starting pitching for Helena has been outstanding during the three-game winning streak and Helena right-hander Amaury Rivas was on top of his game Friday. He settled down nicely after giving up two unearned runs in the first inning.

White Sox shortstop Scotty Madsen reached thanks to an error to lead off the game and Santo Garcia followed that up with a single.

Chris Carter picked up an RBI later in the frame and Missoula native Kris Welker drove in a run with a single.

That would be all the damage that the White Sox offense could do, however, as Rivas settled down and worked six strong innings.

?He kept hammering the strike zone,? Brewer pitching coach Mark Littell said.

Helena reliever Travis Wendte finished off the job, striking out four in three innings of work.

He relied on a nasty slider to retire the White Sox in order in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings.

?When he throws it at different speeds, it is his best pitch,? Littell said.

Offensively the Brewers were paced by the heart of their order as clean-up hitter Cole Gillespie scored twice and reached base four times.

No. 5 hitter Chris Errecart drove in three runs, two of which came on a home run in the fourth inning, giving Helena a 3-2 win. He drove a Logan Williamson offering over the left-field wall for his sixth round-tripper of the season. He leads the team in that category.

?(Hitting coach) Johnny Narron gets them prepared to hit each and every night,? Sedar said.

After Great Falls pushed across a run in the sixth, Helena took the lead for good in the seventh when Stephen Chapman came home on a wild pitch by Great Falls reliever Michael Rocco.

Jordan Swaydan also had two hits for Helena in the contest.

The two teams will meet again tonight to start the second half. Ramon Sanchez is scheduled to start for Great Falls, while Brandon Parillo is slated to start for Helena.

Final: Arizona Angels 9, Arizona Brewers 8

Arizona Brewer Box Score and Game Log Link:

Left fielder Andrew Lefave reaches five times -- he's at .488/.542/.732 after 41 AB's with only three K's (1.274 OPS) -- there's your Carlos Lee replacement; first baseman John Alonso drives in four; Brewers commit six errors, four by 2006 2nd round pick Brent Brewer at shortstop, now with 18 errors in limited action -- this kid seems overmatched in Maryvale, that doesn't bode well; mound efforts not as ugly as you'd think -- limited the bases on balls and victimized by defense...
