Free Laynce Nix!

Seriously... if this guy could somehow break out that would be huge. Melvin just needs to decide at some point who to let go and who to keep. I was hoping Cruz would be kept but that's not happening anymore. I think Gwynn will end up being pretty darn good at some point. Just not a lot of power from our minor league OF anymore with Cruz gone. I'm not saying that's horrible but some HR potential could help. I know Nix is supposed to have a little pop.

Sorry, I'm babbling.

Laynce Nix is tearing the cover off the ball since the trade. Today he goes 3-7 with a HR, 3B, and 2B. Nelson Who? Anyone got any insight into the chances of Nix turning things around and becoming the steal of the Carlos Lee trade.

Sounds Close Homestand With Twinbill Split

NASHVILLE, Tenn. ? The Nashville Sounds split a doubleheader with the visiting Salt Lake Bees on Tuesday night at Greer Stadium but finished the evening on a high note, snapping their five-game losing streak with a 9-5 victory.

Nashville (59-52) avoided a sweep with the win and finished the homestand with a 3-5 mark. The Sounds hold at least a 2 ½ game lead over Iowa in the PCL American Conference Northern Division.

The nine runs scored by Nashville were the club?s most in 67 games, dating back to a 10-1 victory over Tacoma on May 21.

After Salt Lake grabbed a 1-0 lead in the nightcap with a run in the top of the second inning, the Sounds plated three in the bottom of the frame to take a 3-1 advantage.

Graham Koonce walked and Brent Abernathy (3-for-4) singled against Bees starter Steven Shell before Vinny Rottino reached when Shell failed to handle his sacrifice bunt. After Dave Krynzel popped out for the first out of the inning, catcher Chad Moeller laced a two-run single to right to put Nashville in front, 2-1. With two down in the inning, Kennard Bibbs ripped a single to right to plate Rottino for a two-run lead.

The teams traded runs again in the fourth. Casey Smith led off the frame with a triple for Salt Lake and scored on a Erick Aybar groundout. The Sounds responded in the bottom of the frame when Zach Sorensen laid down a perfect squeeze bunt to plate Rottino, who had led off with a single and moved to third on a Moeller single.

Salt Lake pulled within a run again in the top of the fifth when Mathis scored on Darren Blakely?s one-out single off Nashville starter Carlos Villanueva to make the score, 4-3, but the Sounds again immediately responded to the rally with runs of their own, scoring four in the bottom of the frame while batting around.

Laynce Nix got things started when he led off with a triple to left to extend his hitting streak to 12 games then scored on a Shell balk. After Koonce was hit by a pitch and Matt Wilhite came on in relief for the Bees, the Sounds strung together three straight singles, the last of which by Krynzel scored Koonce for a 6-3 lead. Moeller added a sacrifice fly and Sorensen contributed an RBI single to wrap up the inning?s scoring.

The Bees did not go away quietly. Kendry Morales continued his hot series with a two-run homer off Villanueva in the top of the sixth to bring the visitors within 8-5. The blast was the first baseman?s eighth of the season overall and third in the last two days against the Sounds.

Again, Nashville had an answer for the Salt Lake scoring. Koonce slugged his 11th homer of the year and second of the series in the bottom of the frame, a two-out solo shot to right-center off Bees reliever Jeff Heaverlo.

Villanueva (4-0) earned his fourth win in six trips to the hill for Nashville. He allowed five runs on seven hits and matched a season high with eight strikeouts while working all seven innings for his first career Triple-A complete game.

Shell (3-7) absorbed the loss after surrendering six runs (five earned) on seven hits over four frames of work for Salt Lake.

Bees center fielder Tommy Murphy belted two longballs in the opener to lead Salt Lake to a come-from-behind 7-6 victory over the Sounds in eight innings. The loss was Nashville?s fifth in a row, matching the club?s longest losing streak of the season.

For the third consecutive game against the Bees in the series, Nashville failed to protect a lead after the midpoint of the contest and suffered a loss.

Salt Lake third baseman Mike Eylward put the visitors on the board in the opener with a two-run double into right-center in the top of the first inning against Sounds starter Dana Eveland.

The Sounds bounced right back, plating a run in the bottom of the first. With two outs, Nix hit his first home run as a Sound over the left-field fence, making it a 2-1 game. The roundtripper, which came off Salt Lake starter Kasey Olenberger, was Nix?s 11th of the season and extended his hitting streak to a season-high 11 games.

Nashville, which hit the least amount of home runs in the PCL during the month of July with 14 longballs, took a one-run lead in the home half of the second on the team?s second roundtripper of the game. With Rottino on first, Krynzel hit a 2-2 Olenberger offering over the center field wall to push the Sounds ahead of the Bees by one run, 3-2. Krynzel?s tater was his third of the season and snapped his 12 at-bat hitless streak.

The Sounds offense gave Eveland some breathing room with a three-run fourth inning to stretch the lead to 6-2. After the first run scored on a Krynzel groundout, catcher Mark Johnson plated Krynzel on a double to left-center. Johnson scored on the following at-bat on a Jermaine Clark RBI single to center. All the runs came against Olenbeger.

Salt Lake slowly climbed back into the game, recording runs in each of the final four innings of play.

With Dennis Sarfate on the hill in his second relief outing of the season after being moved out of the rotation, Salt Lake rallied for two runs to knot the score in the top of the seventh.

With one out and runners at first and second, Eylward singled to score Erick Aybar from second. On the next at-bat, catcher Jeff Mathis singled to load the bases with one out. Adam Pavkovich followed and drew a game-tying walk from Sarfate to knot the score at 6-6. With the bases still juiced and only one out, the right-hander recovered to strike out the next two batters to escape the jam without further damage.

The blown save, which came in Sarfate?s first opportunity of the year, cost Eveland his first victory since May 4th. The right-hander allowed three runs on five hits while striking out seven in his five innings of work.

With the game tied in the eighth, Murphy smacked his second home run of the game for the Bees to give them a one-run lead. Murphy?s home run, which came off Sounds reliever Allan Simpson, brought the score to its final 7-6.

Bees reliever Marcus Gwyn (3-1) held the Sounds scoreless in the bottom of the eighth and earned his third win of the season. Simpson (1-4) took the loss after allowing the game-deciding run in his two-thirds of an inning before being ejected while arguing a balk call.

The Sounds head out on their longest road trip of the season tomorrow, a 13-day, 12-game jaunt that includes stops in Fresno, Sacramento, and Albuquerque. Right-hander Justin Lehr (3-4, 3.33) takes the hill for Nashville in Wednesday?s 9:05 p.m. CT series opener to face Fresno right-hander Matt Palmer (3-1, 3.28) .

Nashville Box Score and Game Log

Vinny Rotino is moving in on .300--Laynce Nix seems incredibly raw for a guy who used to be a top prospect...nonetheless, i still hold out hope for this guy...i dunno why, but i think he will be an impact player. Carlos V. with 8 k's even though he allowed 5 runs...

Stars Win Drama Filled Game in Ninth

Ozzie Chavez singled home the game-winning run in the bottom half of the ninth inning to cap off a wild, back and forth affair that Huntsville came back to win 9-8 over Chattanooga Tuesday night in the fourth game of a five-game series at Joe Davis Stadium. The Stars snapped a two-game slide, improved to 18-20 in the second half and moved to within three and a half games of co-North Division leaders Tennessee and Chattanooga, who fell to 22-17.

Brad Nelson opened the ninth inning with a four pitch walk, moved to second base when Ron Acuna was hit by Jon Coutlangus on an 0-2 offering and advanced to third base when catcher Miguel Perez fielded Drew Anderson?s bunt attempt and threw late to third. Lou Palmisano struck out swinging for the first out before Chavez chopped a single over the mound, into center field through a drawn-in infield for the decisive hit and his fourth run batted in of the night. Chavez finished with four hits and became the fourth Stars batter to collect four hits in a game.

Joe Valentine took over on the hill for the Stars in the ninth protecting an 8-6 lead and walked Anderson Machado to start the inning. Drew Anderson, the batter that followed, fouled off two pitches at 3-2 and then slammed the next one over the wall in right field for a home run to tie the game. Joey Votto?s two-run home run in the seventh inning snapped a 3-3 tie and Chris Dickerson?s lead off long ball in the eighth, on the first pitch thrown by Gerrit Simpson, pushed the visitor?s lead to 6-3.

Calvin Medlock threw two scoreless innings in relief of starter Homer Bailey and was replaced in the eighth inning by Jim Abbott, who gave up a single to Nelson to start the frame. Ron Acuna and Palmisano walked to load the bases with one out before Chavez doubled to center field past the reach of Dickerson to drive in two to cut the lead to 6-5 and push Palmisano to third. Jeff Eure then delivered a two-run, pinch-hit single to center to put the Stars back on top at 7-6. Coutlangus was brought in to turn Callix Crabbe into a right-handed hitter and the Huntsville second sacker spoiled the strategy by singling into center to plate Eure to make it 8-6 Stars.

Bailey, the top rated prospect in the Cincinnati organization, was charged with three runs on eight hits over five innings after allowing only three runs in 36 innings in his first six double-A starts. The three runs and the eight hits were the most he has allowed in any turn with Chattanooga.

The series concludes Wednesday night with southpaw Manny Parra making his first start for Huntsville against Lookouts? left-hander Camilo Vazquez. Coverage of the game begins at 6:50 p.m. central time and can be heard locally on ESPN Radio 1450 AM and through the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com.

man, the FSL sure makes information hard to get, doesn't it? Nonetheless, a good game by the 'tee's. Brendan Katin really deserves to be promoted. Perhaps the addition of Ned Yost the 4 coming, Katin will get sent to Huntsville where he can hang out with his bud Ryan Braun...maybe even join him in putting up huge numbers. Errors stop Brewers streak

By JEFF WINDMUELLER - Independent Record Sports Writer

After playing without an error for the last two games, the Helena Brewers allowed two in a row Saturday that cost them in their 8-4 loss to the Billings Mustangs at Kindrick Legion Field.

The loss also ended a six-game winning streak that has given the Brewers the top spot in the Pioneer League North Division, with a 3-1 record in the second half.

In the top of the fifth inning, Billings? Billy Rojo cracked a low bouncer, striking third baseman Carlos De La Cruz in the chest and giving the batter time to reach first. Then, Justin Turner sent a hard-hit grounder toward first baseman Bill Rowe, who muffed the play when the ball rolled high off his glove.

Both Rojo and Turner would score in the five-run inning that gave the Mustangs a 7-1 lead.

?The defense broke down a little bit,? said acting manager Johnny Narron. ?If you look back at the games we won, we played errorless baseball. The walks hurt us and the errors hurt us defensively.?

Narron, the Brewers batting coach, is sitting in for manager Ed Sedar who is serving a 3-game suspension and was given a $150 fine after being ejected from a game last week.

?Offensively, I think the kids battled. You saw that right down to the last inning, we didn?t give up,? Narron said.

The Brewers were able to score three runs in the final inning when rightfielder Danny Dorn dropped a fly ball by Brewers? Stephen Chapman. The error allowed Garry Savas ? who got on with a hit pitch ? Carlos De La Cruz and David Parker to score.

With two outs, the catch would have ended the game.

The Mustangs pitching crew also outperformed the Brewers who suffered five walks to the Mustangs three. Billings, meanwhile, pitched seven scoreless innings, keeping the Brewers to just four batters per inning throughout six of them.

Kevin Gunter earned the win. He threw four innings, allowing only three hits while striking out four.

Brock Kjeldgaard took the loss for the Brewers, giving up five runs off six hits while walking two.

Narron, who managed the Brewers in 2004, said that the absence of Ed Sedar could have an effect on his players.

?Eddie is the heart and soul of our team. The players respond to him, he?s in my mind the best manager in minor league baseball. He sets the tone,? Narron said. ?We?re going to do the best we can, we?ll play hard, we?ll play like Eddie wants us to play.?

If they can keep up their play, Narron believes they can reverse their standings from the first half of the season, when the Brewers finished last in the league

?We?re going to be right in the thick of things in the end of this half.? Narron said. ?We?re looking to win this half.?

Helena will have Wednesday off before heading to Great Falls on Thursday. That game is scheduled to begin at 7 PM (8:00 Central).

Jon Ebelt Independent Record Staff Photographer - Helena Brewer David Parker (10) doesn?t make it to second base in time as Billings? Justin Turner is there for the force out to end the inning Tuesday at Kindrick Legion Field.

Anyone got any insight into the chances of Nix turning things around and becoming the steal of the Carlos Lee trade.

Either you don't read many threads or I need to get crazy-obsessive about how much I think Nix could be the sleeper of the Lee trade http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif .

Nix's major-league numbers from `03 and `04 reminded me of Bill Hall's.

Lots of extra-base power from those two could be a very good fit for the 4 (Hall) and 5 (Nix) spots. And keep in mind that Gabe Gross has also had a jump in his power production. Gross also deserves a shot at a starting job.

Mench and Jenkins... I see them as very valuable trade bait in the off-season.

Sounds finally end skid

Split doubleheader to end slide at five

By MIKE ORGAN

Tennessean Staff Writer

It's a good thing the Sounds played a doubleheader Tuesday.

They needed the second game to snap their longest losing streak of the season.

The Sounds, who played two against Salt Lake as a result of Monday's rainout, got four runs in the fifth inning of the second game and won 9-5.

That came after Nashville lost the first game 7-6 in eight innings, which marked Nashville's fifth consecutive loss. The Sounds also lost five in a row June 5-10.

The win, while welcomed, was not enough to wash away the bitter taste left by the skid for Nashville Manager Frank Kremblas.

"Absolutely not,'' Kremblas said when asked whether he was over the losing streak. "We had the lead in every single game (the last three) and lost it in every game. It's just one of those times when you get leads and you don't hold them."

So how did he finally get his team over the hump? Kremblas is unsure.

"If there was something that you could do about it, and if I knew what it was, I'd be a kadrillionaire,'' Kremblas said.

The nine runs were the most scored by Nashville in 67 games, since beating Tacoma 10-1 on May 21.

A Greer Stadium crowd of 4,339 stuck around to see the streak end as the Sounds leave today for their longest road trip of the season, which begins with a 9:05 p.m. game at Fresno.

As it did in most of the games during the slump, Nashville took an early lead in the second game. The Sounds led 4-2 after Zach Sorensen's sacrifice bunt scored Vinny Rottino from third.

Unlike the earlier games, though, Nashville avoided trouble by loading the bases with no outs in the fifth and got a shot to right field by Dave Krynzel that scored Graham Koonce.

Chad Moeller's sacrifice bunt then scored Brent Abernathy, and Sorensen's hit that dropped in right field scored Rottino, giving the Sounds an 8-3 lead.

Koonce stretched Nashville's lead to 9-5 in the sixth with a home run, his 11th of the year.

Sounds embark on longest road trip

By MIKE ORGAN

Tennessean Staff Writer

The Sounds, who have been at home since July 25, head out today on their longest road trip of the season. It will be a 13-day, 12-game jaunt that includes stops in Fresno, Sacramento, and Albuquerque.

The Sounds, who are 24-27 away from home, won't return to Greer Stadium until Aug. 15.

Lets play two: Tuesday marked the Sounds' second home doubleheader. Nashville has played two doubleheaders on the road this season.

Power play: The Baseball America Triple-A Best Tools were awarded Tuesday, and for the second consecutive year, a player who spent time with the Sounds won the Best Power Prospect. Nelson Cruz, who was with Nashville until being traded to the Rangers last week and had hit 20 home runs and 73 RBIs during his time with the Sounds, won the honor this year. Last year it went to Prince Fielder, who has been with the Brewers and is a Rookie of the Year candidate.

Sowers under control: Former Vanderbilt pitcher Jeremy Sowers, before being called up to the Cleveland Indians, won Baseball America's Best Control award for his time with Buffalo. Sowers pitched back-to-back complete game shutouts over the past week for the Indians.

Former Middle Tennessee State pitcher Dewon Brazelton, who started the season with the Padres and has been in Triple-A Portland since earlier in the summer, was named the Pacific Coast League Pitcher of the Week on Tuesday. The Tullahoma, Tenn., native picked up a pair of wins and posted an ERA of 0.71 last week.

Pavkovich returns: Stingers' left fielder Adam Pavkovich, who left Sunday's game after being hit in the jaw on a pitch by Sounds reliever Mike Meyers, returned to action Tuesday. X-rays were negative on Pavkovich's jaw. Pavkovich was 0-for-2 with an RBI in the first game and not in the lineup for the second.

Hot start: With two hits on four at-bats in the first game, Laynce Nix improved to 4-of-7 since joining the Sounds on Sunday. Nix got his first home run for the Sounds in the first inning. He struck out swinging in the first inning of the second game.

A scorcher: The temperature at Greer Stadium at the start of the first game was 98 degrees, according to the scoreboard.

Sounds end losing streak, split doubleheader

By Nate Rau, Nashville City Paper Sports Correspondent

The Nashville Sounds chased the bitter taste of a season-worst five-game losing streak by downing the Salt Lake Bees 9-5 in the second game of a doubleheader at Greer Stadium on Tuesday.

The win came after a hard-to-swallow 7-6 loss in the first game, in which the Sounds coughed up a four-run lead in addition to having a relief pitcher and their manager ejected.

Vinny Rottino (two hits, three runs), Chad Moeller (two hits, three RBIs) and Brent Abernathy (three hits, two runs) were among a handful of Sounds who powered the team to victory in the nightcap. Nashville?s lead in the Pacific Coast League American Northern Division stood at three games. Second-place Iowa had a night game in Las Vegas.

(Iowa won, the lead is 2 1/2 games....)

Sounds manager Frank Kremblas said finally getting a win didn?t wipe away the frustration of blowing the lead in the team?s previous three losses.

?This is one of those times when you get leads and you don?t hold them,? Kremblas said. ?It happens? in baseball. You see it every year.?

While the Nashville offense churned out 12 hits en route to the most runs the team has scored since May 21, starter Carlos Villanueva (4-0) picked up his fourth-straight victory. Villanueva pitched all seven innings and seven hits for five earned runs.

?We swung the bats better. We?ve swung the bats better the past few games. I think the day off [because of Monday?s rainout] helped us.

?Villanueva did OK. It wasn?t his best game.?

The day off didn?t help in the first game. That?s when the Bees won in extra innings, although the game only lasted eight frames. PCL doubleheaders are seven innings. Tommy Murphy hit a game-winning homer off reliever Allan Simpson in the eighth to cap the Bees? four-run rally.

One batter later Simpson was ejected for arguing with home plate umpire Ramon Armendariz after a balk was called on a pitch that would have ended the inning. Simpson appeared to bump chests with Armendariz while arguing the call.

Kremblas was ejected the prior inning for arguing with third base ump D.J. Reyburn following a close play at second base in which left fielder Kennard Bibbs was ruled out.

Murphy?s homer and the Sounds ejections came on the heels of an implosion by the Nashville bullpen, which was given a 6-3 lead by starter Dana Eveland, who hasn?t won since May 4. Chris Demaria (one earned run), Dennis Sarfate (two earned runs) and Simpson (one earned run) each played a role in surrendering the lead. Sarfate walked in the game-tying run.

Laynce Nix hit his first homer as a Sound and Dave Krynzel launched a two-run shot to help Nashville build a 6-2 lead.

Brevard County Game Summaries:

The Brevard County Manatees scored one run in the sixth inning to beat the Jupiter Hammerhead 4-3 Tuesday in Florida State League baseball.

Brendan Katin batted 2 for 3 with a triple, and Carlos Corporan went 2 for 3 with a double. Katin and Corporan each contributed one RBI.

Earlier Adam Brandenburg tossed five no-hit innings to lead Jupiter past Brevard County, 5-2, in the completion of Monday's suspended game Tuesday.

Brandenburg (2-1) struck out three and walked one in his first start with the Hammerheads. The 24-year-old left-hander retired the first 13 batters he faced before issuing a one-out walk to Hernan Iribarren in the fifth. He coaxed Adam Heether into a double play to end the inning and faced the minimum 15 batters before exiting.

J.T. Restko led Jupiter (14-22) with two hits and two RBI. The 21-year-old outfielder ripped RBI singles in the first and a four-run fifth. Edgar Varela added an RBI single and Carlos Piste had two hits and scored a run to round out the Hammerheads attack.

Brevard County starter Josh Wahpepah (5-6) allowed a run on a hit and four walks in two innings. Derek Miller allowed four runs -- three earned -- on six hits and a walk, while striking out five over five innings.

Kyle Phillips ended the shutout with a two-run homer in the ninth, but the Manatees (15-21) managed only four hits.
