Mat Gamel is having himself some sort of game tonight! Already 7 RBIs and just a homer short of the cycle after just 4 innings. Salome, Cain, Ford, and just about every other Power starter hitting the ball well tonight. 6 runs in the 1st and now 10 runs in the 4th.

The first four batters for WV are a combined 10 for 12 so far.
"Dustin Pedroia doesn't have the strength or bat speed to hit major-league pitching consistently, and he has no power......He probably has a future as a backup infielder if he can stop rolling over to third base and shortstop." Keith Law, 2006

notable number if you project Salome for 700 PA, which is a good benchmark for an eerday big leaue player he would still have fewer then 100Ks. For a young power hitting prospect that is a rather impressive number. On the other hand players like Cain and Ford have some serious work to do if they are not going to be exposed at higher levels. Gamel looks to be within an acceptable level for a power prospect.

Ford yes, but I wouldn't lump Cain in there yet. As the recent Cain article mentioned, he hasn't been playing ball for that long. His walk to K ratio isn't that bad, which I think is as useful as straight k's.

August 3, 2006

Alcides Escobar ripped an RBI single in the bottom of the 10th inning as Brevard County edged Fort Myers, 4-3, on Thursday.

Ned Yost IV drew a leadoff walk, moved to second on Ryan Crew's groundout and scored the winning run on Escobar's two-out base hit into right field off Colby Miller (3-3).

Crew extended his hitting streak to 13 games with a fourth-inning single and Kyle Philips and Hernan Iribarren drove in two runs apiece for the Manatees (18-21), who won their third in a row.

Joe Thatcher (3-1) pitched a scoreless 10th to pick up the win.

David Winfree hit a two-run homer in the ninth for the Miracle (20-18 ). J.R. Taylor and Brock Peterson had back-to-back doubles in the third.

Final: Power 16, Columbus (Dodgers) 6

West Virginia Site Game Summary:

Link, text follows --

Power Bat Around Twice, Beat Catfish

The West Virginia Power sent eleven batters to the plate and scored six runs in the bottom of the first inning and then sent 14 batters to the plate in the bottom of the fourth inning, scoring ten times to defeat the Columbus Catfish 16-6 on Thursday night at Appalachian Power Park.

The scoring in the six run first inning began on Angel Salome?s first of two RBI doubles. Mat Gamel knocked in seven runs in the contest, his first two RBI came on a single in the first inning. Tony Festa knocked in a run on a groundout and Nestor Corredor and Darren Ford finished the six run frame on run scoring singles. The Catfish decreased the deficit by scoring twice in the top of the second inning. Russ Mitchell led off with a solo homerun and Bridger Hunt plated the next run on a groundout.

West Virginia scored ten runs on six hits in the bottom of the fourth inning to pull away. Angel Salome doubled in Darren Ford to score the first run, Mat Gamel knocked in the next two on a double and he scored on Tony Festa?s two-bagger. Ryan Barba produced a run scoring single which preceded bases loaded walks to Lorenzo Cain and Angel Salome. Mat Gamel drove in the final three runs of the inning on a bases loaded triple. Gamel came a homerun away from the cycle, and he plated five of the ten runs in the inning.

Travis Denker hit a solo shot to kickoff the eighth inning for Columbus. The Catfish offense put together a nice run in the ninth inning but it was too little and too late. Jason Mooneyham walked with the bases loaded, Travis Denker and Russ Mitchell both provided run scoring singles but the rally came to an end when David Sutherland ended the game grounding into a 4-6-3 double play.

Shawn Ferguson (1-1) earned the victory, which is the first of his professional career while Mario Alvarez (5-6, 6.03) obtained the loss. The Power are 58-50 overall and 19-20 in the second half after the win while the Catfish fell to 55-55 overall and 18-22 in the second half after the loss.

The Power will continue the four game series against the Columbus Catfish at Appalachian Power Park on Friday night. Right hander James McDonald (3-9, 4.28) will make the start for Columbus and the Power will counter with left hander Rafael Lluberes (4-6, 3.70). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.

West Virginia Box Score and Game Log Link:

If i had time to write a lengthy update on the Power, i'd probably use this game as a jumping off point. this team hasn't produced a huge amount of wins, but prospect wise, they are pretty much loaded. Cain, Salome, Inman, and Gamel will be on the Power 50 for a while to come, and should all make AAA if not Milwaukee. After that, guys like Ford, Brantley, Mike Bell, Holmberg, etc, are all good prospects who could surprise...what a fun team to watch...wish i coulda gone to this one!

9th-Inning Nix Blast Wins It For Sounds

FRESNO, Calif. ? Laynce Nix belted a three-run home run with two outs in the top of the ninth inning to propel the Nashville Sounds to a dramatic 4-1 victory over the Fresno Grizzlies on Thursday evening at Grizzlies Stadium.

The victory was the tenth last at-bat win for Nashville (60-53), which increased its division lead back to 2 ½ games over Iowa.

Nix?s game-winning blast came on a 3-2 offering from Fresno reliever Erick Threets and traveled nearly 400 feet to left-center. Chris Barnwell and Kennard Bibbs, who had each walked with two outs, scored on the roundtripper, Nix?s 12th of the year and second with the Sounds.

The late homer made a winner out of Sounds starter Ben Hendrickson (9-5), who turned in an outstanding effort. The right-hander worked his longest outing of the year with eight innings pitched and held Fresno to just one run on six hits while striking out five to earn his team-leading ninth win.

Nix (3-for-5) extended his season-best hitting streak to 14 games with a first-inning single off Fresno starter Nick Pereira. Nix has recorded 10 hits in his initial 18 at-bats for the Sounds (.556).

Barnwell stole his 10th base of the season in the ninth, becoming the seventh Nashville player to amass a double-digit theft total in 2006.

The Sounds grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the second on Bibbs? two-out RBI single to right that plated recent addition Andrew Beattie, who had opened the frame with a walk.

The Grizzlies tied the contest in the home half of the frame on a run-scoring groundout off the bat of Clay Timpner, who had the unique distinction of being thrown out attempting to steal three different times in the game by Sounds catcher Chad Moeller.

Nashville missed an opportunity to move back in front in the fourth, failing to score after putting runners on the corners with no outs. Pereira induced a popout from Moeller for the first out then escaped the jam when Hendrickson bunted a ball in the air back to the pitcher that turned into an inning-ending double play.

Hendrickson was on cruise control in the middle frames, retiring eight straight batters from the fifth through seventh and facing the minimum number of batters from the fifth through the eighth. Fresno placed only one runner into scoring position after the second inning.

Allan Simpson came on in relief of Hendrickson in the ninth and worked a scoreless frame to notch his ninth save of the year.

Grizzlies reliever Carlos Hines (1-3) took the loss after walking Barnwell and Bibbs to put the ducks on the pond prior to Nix?s game-winner.

The teams continue their series with another 9:05 p.m. CT matchup on Friday evening. Knuckleballer Jared Fernandez (6-4, 2.70) will toe the rubber for Nashville and face Fresno southpaw Jared Misch (0-1, 4.70).

Nashville Boxscore and Game Log:

Ben Hendrickson with a good start---Laynce Nix still on fire, with a couple singles and a game winning homer---Nelson who?. New guy Beattie 1 for 1 with 3 BB's, I'm telling you, this guy could have some value for the crew...statistically a lot more impressive than Barnwell

I've really enjoyed keeping track of Iribarren this year and he just continues to hit. Am I the only person excited about this kid? Good to see Nix playing well too with the game winning 3 run homerun tonight. Also, when can we expect Salome to get a promotion? We already know he can hit and his defense seems to have improved.

so what do we know of this Rivas kid?

By this, DHonks means 20-year-old Amaury Rivas, who tossed seven outstanding innings for Helena last night.

He showed that he could throw strikes in Maryvale, received the promotion to Helena, and has yet to have a bad outing there.

Nice to see one of the unheralded Latin youngsters doing well. Rivas is in his second pro season -- last year in Maryvale, he again showed good control, but his pitches found more of the plate (hit ratio).

Remember the in progress Link Report when the Arizona Brewers led 9-1 in their game?

Final: Arizona Padres 10, Arizona Brewers 9

A-Crew remains winless in the second half; Craig Langille bails Jeremy Jeffress out of a bases-loaded two-out jam in the 3rd, but then runs into problems of his own later on; the Brewers converted former infielder Harold Mejia to a pitcher this year and have used him in late relief, which hasn't worked so well stat-wise thus far...
