Final: West Virginia 8, Columbus (Dodgers) 2

West Virginia Site Game Summary:

HOLMBERG HOMERS TWICE IN POWER WIN

Kenny Holmberg hit a pair of home runs in Friday night?s game against the Columbus Catfish at Appalachian Power Park as the Power scored three in the second inning and five in the fourth inning to beat Columbus 8-2.

Russ Mitchell began the top of the second inning with a solo homer, his second of the series to put the Catfish ahead 1-0. In the bottom of the second Michael Brantley scored Mat Gamel on a two-out bunt single to tie the game. Holmberg hit his first home run during the next at-bat, a two-run blast to give the Power a 3-1 lead.

Holmberg struck again on a two-out, three-run homer in the bottom of the fourth inning. The multi-home run game gave Holmberg six on the year and was his second multi-home run game of the season. The Power added two more runs in the inning on Lorenzo Cain?s two-out double to score Ryan Barba and Darren Ford. Columbus plated the final run of the game in the sixth inning on an RBI double from Lucas May.

The win was the third in a row for West Virginia, putting them on their first three-game winning streak since June 24th.

Julian Cordero (1-0) allowed a run on five hits with six strikeouts through five innings to earn the victory, while James McDonald (3-10) obtained the loss. The Power are 59-50 overall and 20-20 in the second half after the win while the Catfish fell to 55-56 overall and 18-23 in the second half after the loss.

The Power will finish the four game series against the Columbus Catfish at Appalachian Power Park on Saturday night. Right hander David Horlacher (1-3, 5.56) will make the start for Columbus and the Power will counter with right hander Matt Kretzschmar (3-4, 5.86). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM (6:05 Central).

West Virginia Box Score and Game Log:

The fact that both Holmberg's jacks were with two outs is big; this team really played well win-wise in the first half, and their talent and recent play makes you wonder how they're only .500 in the second half; welcome to Brewerfan, Julian Cordero; even though it's passed ball # 13 for Angel Salome, it sure seems that he's progressed behind the plate; Catfish 0-for-1 in stolen base attempts...

From an organizational standpoint, it's understood -- but if I'm a Manatee season ticket holder, I'm scratching my head watching the Brewers treat the Brevard rotation like one big rehab stint (Sam Narron follows Luis Pena's three-inning start Thursday with a two-inning outing tonight); is Ryan Crew officially an outfielder now?

Stars' Ride Big Rally to Win in Mobile

Jeff Eure?s three-run pinch-hit double capped off a seven-run fifth inning uprising, as Huntsville stormed back to beat Mobile 9-4 Friday night in the opener of a five-game set at Hank Aaron Stadium. The Stars won their third straight game, scoring nine runs in all three, to improve to 20-20 in the second half but could gain no ground on victorious first place Tennessee in the North Division, while the BayBears slipped to 20-21 in the second half and fell four and a half games behind Jacksonville, which was rained out.

Callix Crabbe got the decisive rally started with a one out single, moved to third base on a Drew Anderson single and scored on a base hit by Brad Nelson to trim the home team?s lead to 4-2. Ron Acuna?s bases loaded single scored Anderson to cut the lead to 4-3 before Lou Palmisano singled to left to plate Nelson to tie the game. Left fielder Dustin Delucchi kicked the ball toward centerfield, allowing Ryan Braun to score to give the Stars the lead at 5-4, while Acuna to advance to third and Palmisano to second. Ozzie Chavez was intentionally walked and Eure followed by slamming a 1-1 offering from BayBears? starter Mike Ekstrom over the head of center fielder Drew Macias to score all three runners to push the advantage to 8-4. It was Eure?s second bases-clearing double of the year, both on the road, and his second straight pinch-hit in which he drove in multiple runs. He singled in a pair in the eighth inning of Tuesday?s 9-8 win over Chattanooga.

Stars? starter Corey Thurman allowed a first inning run on a solo home run by Vincent Sinisi, a third inning sacrifice fly by Stephen Smitherman and consecutive two-out run-scoring singles in the fourth by Brett Dowdy and Dustin Delucchi that built a 4-1 lead for Mobile. The right-hander was taken out after four frames in his shortest outing since his first start of the year on April 8 at Mississippi. Travis Phelps worked three scoreless innings to grab his first win since July 4 at Birmingham, striking out five, walking one and scattering three hits. Ekstrom was charged with seven earned runs on eight hits and a season-high five walks and dropped to 0-5 in nine starts at the double-A level.

The Stars totaled 11 hits and have now collected 10-or-more hits in a game 17 times in the second half after doing so only a dozen times in 69 games in the first half. Chavez walked three times and scored twice and has now crossed the plate six times in the last three games after scoring only once in 19 games. Acuna had his third three-hit game of the season and first since June 4 at Birmingham.

The series continues Saturday with left-hander Steve Hammond taking the hill for Huntsville against Mobile right-hander Jack Cassel. Coverage of the game begins at 6:50 p.m. central time and can be heard locally on ESPN Radio 1450 AM and through the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com.

I wonder if the relative lack of success from the Latin players the Brewers signed last year is the reason they've been quiet in that market this year. I can see why an organization that doesn't see immediate returns on a couple of hefty signing bonus wouldn't go back.

I admit, it still irks me that international players don't have to enter the draft like the NBA, that would at least give every team a reasonable shot to sign international talent every year.

Final: Nashville 5, Fresno (Giants) 4

Nix, Moeller Lead Sounds Past Grizzlies, 5-4

FRESNO, Calif. ? The Nashville Sounds emerged on top in a back-and-forth battle with Fresno on Friday evening at Grizzlies Stadium, scoring a 5-4 victory in the third game of a four-game series.

With the win, Nashville (61-53) notched its third victory in the last four games and increased its lead in the PCL American Conference Northern Division to 3 ½ games over Iowa.

Six Sounds finished with two or more hits on the evening as Nashville tallied 14 knocks, the club?s most since May 13 at Las Vegas (also 14 hits).

Center fielder Laynce Nix finished 3-for-5 with a homer in the contest to extend his season-best hitting streak to 15 games for the Sounds. In six games with Nashville, Nix is batting an incredible .565 (13-for-23) with six extra-base hits.

Sounds catcher Chad Moeller went 2-for-4 with a pair of runs driven in, including the eventual game-winner in the eighth, to up his season-best hit streak to four games.

Zach Sorensen opened the game with a single to right off Grizzlies starter Patrick Misch, extending his season-best hitting streak to five games. Chris Barnwell followed with a line-drive knock off the glove of Grizzlies second baseman Kevin Frandsen before Nix ripped a single to right to load the bags and extend Nashville?s longest hit streak of the year to 15 games.

Brent Abernathy gave the visitors a 1-0 lead by plating Sorensen with a sacrifice fly to left, marking his first RBI in 14 games. Misch avoided further damage in the frame by striking out Andrew Beattie and Vinny Rottino in order for the final two outs of the inning.

Fresno took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the second. Mike Cervanek led off the frame with a double, moved to third on a Juan Melo single, and tied the game when he scored on a wild pitch thrown by Sounds starter Jared Fernandez. Former Sound Tomas de la Rosa (Pirates' organization) gave the Grizzlies the lead when he singled up the middle to bring in Melo.

Abernathy knotted the contest at 2-2 in the third when he drove in his second run of the game, bringing home Sorensen with a two-out RBI double into the left field corner.

Nashville reclaimed a 3-2 advantage against Misch in the fourth. Rottino (3-for-4) upped his hitting streak to five games when he led off the frame with a double to left-center. Moeller gave the Sounds their second lead of the night when he plated Rottino with a one-out single to left. The knock extended the backstop?s season-best hit streak to four games.

Fernandez worked five innings and held Fresno to two runs on six hits but did not factor in the decision as the Nashville bullpen failed to protect the lead.

Fresno center fielder Clay Timpner picked a good time to launch his first home run of the season, taking Sounds reliever Chris Demaria deep in the bottom of the sixth inning for a two-run shot that staked the Grizzlies to a 4-3 lead. The tater scored de la Rosa, who had singled earlier in the frame.

Nix continued his solid night in the seventh when he slugged his 13th home run of the season and third in six games with Nashville to square the tilt at 4-4. His two-out solo blast to right-center greeted Grizzlies reliever Michael Tejera, who blew his first save opportunity.

Moeller put the Sounds ahead for good in the top of the eighth with a two-out RBI single to left off Carlos Hines that plated Rottino with for a 5-4 Nashville advantage.

Demaria (4-0) picked up the victory in relief for Nashville despite giving up two runs on two hits in his two innings.

Alec Zumwalt worked the final two innings in hitless fashion to earn his team-leading 12th save of the year.

Hines (1-4) took his second loss of the series after surrendering the go-ahead run in his lone frame of action.

The teams wrap up the series with a 9:05 p.m. CT finale on Saturday evening. Left-hander Zach Jackson (2-4, 4.06) will take the mound for the Sounds looking for his first Triple-A victory since May 24th. Fresno right-hander Brian Cooper (4-8, 5.15) will provide the opposition.

Brewers win slugfest

By Independent Record Staff

The Helena Brewers and Great Falls White Sox put on a hitting show Friday night.

White Sox shortstop John Shelby cracked two home runs, teammate Michael Grace had one as well, but the Brewers had two of their own and held on to a 10-6 lead to win at Centene Stadium.

Helena?s Bill Rowe sent the first ball over the wall in the second inning, and Stephen Chapman hit the team?s second, a two-run homer in the fifth.

The Brewers scored five runs in the inning to build a three-point lead, but the White Sox quickly climbed back in the sixth when Shelby hit his second home run, tying the score at 6-6.

Helena walked three times and scored four runs in the seventh inning, including two off a single to centerfield by Andy Bouchie, to build the final lead.

Mike McClendon pitched for the win. In two innings he gave up three runs off three hits, but walked none and struck out one.

Ryan Rote got the loss, allowing four runs and walking three in one inning.

After taking last place in the Pioneer League for the first half of the season, the Brewers are at the top of the North Division with a 4-2 record.

They will play again in Great Falls today at 7:00 PM (8:00 Central).

White Sox relievers let one slip away

By MIKE TOWNE

Great Falls Tribune Sports Writer

Bobby Tolan was one frustrated manager late Friday night.

His Great Falls White Sox rallied for two runs in the fifth inning and three in the sixth to tie the Helena Brewers at 6-all, but then suffered another collapse by the bullpen.

The Brewers used four hits and an error to score four runs in the top of the seventh inning and went on to defeat the Sox 10-6 in an intradivision Pioneer League contest before 3,814 fans at Centene Stadium.

Taylor Green led off the seventh with a walk and proceeded to score the go-ahead run when Chris Errecart drew a bases-loaded walk, the third free pass by reliever Ryan Rote in the inning.

Andy Bouchie then greeted reliever Andrew Urena with a single that plated both Stephen Chapman and Cole Gillespie to extend Helena's lead to 9-6.

Errecart tallied the Brewers' 10th run when Fredy De La Cruz bounced into a double play.

Mike McClendon retired the Sox in order in the seventh inning, and fellow reliever Steve Palazzolo did the same in both the eighth and the ninth.

The victory spoiled a big night by Great Falls shortstop John Shelby, who hit two home runs and had four RBIs. His two-run shot in the sixth inning, a 415-foot blast to straightaway center, tied the game at 6-6.

"It was a nice comeback, but we gave it right back," said Tolan, whose club defeated Helena 4-1 on Thursday night to end a six-game losing skid. "We get into the sixth and seventh innings, and we can't seem to shut teams down. The relievers let it get away.

"The momentum was on our side after we tied it up, but we gave it right back," he added. "It's frustrating to me. It takes the wind out of you.

"It's just hard to try to manage when they give it right back. But we'll survive, we'll be OK."

Helena broke a 1-1 deadlock with a big fifth inning, scoring five runs on four hits and two errors. Chuckie Caufield singled in two runs to give the Brewers a 3-1 lead, and after Green's bloop single brought home Caufield, Chapman hit a home run just inside the right field foul pole to make it 6-1.

Great Falls answered with two runs in its half of the inning. Tim Lawrence led off with a double to right center, and Shelby followed with a homer to almost the same spot.

After Rote held the Brewers scoreless in the top of the sixth, the Sox tied it up with three runs in the bottom half. Mike Grace doubled off McClendon with one out and scored on a Tyler Reves' single to left, making it 6-4. Lawrence reached on a fielder's choice, and Shelby followed with his second home run of the night and fifth of the season.

"(The big night) should give Shelby some confidence, and that's good," Tolan said. "We need to get a couple more guys on track, and if we can do that we'll score.

"Then it's just a matter of pitching and defense."

Seven players combined for Helena's 10 hits. Green and Chapman, the Nos. 2 and 3 hitters in the order, each had two hits and scored a pair of runs. De La Cruz also had two hits.

Every Brewer except Bouchie scored at least one run.

First baseman Grace had a solid offensive night for Great Falls, going 2-for-3 and scoring two runs. His leadoff home run in the second, a booming shot over the left field wall, tied the game at 1-1.

However, Chris Carter, the Sox's most productive hitter, went 0-for-4. He struck out three times.

Scott Madsen, who has wielded a hot bat in recent games, went 0-for-3.

Miracle outslug Manatees

Peterson gave the visiting Miracle an early lead when he hit a two-run homer, his 14th, to left field in the first inning. Four frames later, Winfree hit a two-run shot to left following Trevor Plouffe's leadoff triple. The 22-year-old Peterson went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored and extended his hitting streak to nine games. He is batting .417 (15-for-36) over that span.

Miracle Pound Out Season High 17 Hits in 7-2 Victory Over Manatees

Oswaldo Sosa was making his Fort Myers Miracle debut on Friday night at Space Coast Stadium after being called up from Single-A Beloit on August 1. He had to love the offensive support he got as the Miracle pounded out a season high 17 hits and Sosa was superb in his debut as the Miracle defeated the Brevard County Manatees 7-2.

Every single Miracle that finished the game got a hit (Miracle catcher Caleb Moore was 0-1 before being hit by a pitch in the fourth and leaving the game), including three hits from Brandon Roberts, David Winfree and Brock Peterson. Winfree started things off in the first with a two out single to left center and Peterson followed that with a two run shot over the left field wall, his 14th of the season.

The Manatees scored an unearned run in the second to make it 2-1, but the Miracle answered right back in the fifth. Trevor Plouffe led it off with a triple into the right field corner and Winfree followed with a two run shot off the left field pole, his sixth of the season and second in as many nights to give the Miracle a 4-1 lead.

The 20-year-old Sosa did the rest. The only earned run he gave up was in the fifth when Charlie Fermaint tripled and scored two batters later on a sac fly from Carlos Corporan. Sosa used a low 90s fastball and low 80s curveball to keep the Manatees off balance. He went 7.0 innings allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits while walking one and striking out five to earn his first victory in a Miracle jersey.

The Miracle, who improved to 21-18 in the second half, made it 6-1 in the sixth when Steve Tolleson led off with a single. With one out Justin Arneson was hit by a pitch. Brandon Roberts singled home Tolleson and two batters later Winfree singled home Roberts.

The Miracle added their final run in the ninth when Peterson led off with a single and scored on a double by Deacon Burns.

The same two teams meet Saturday night at Space Coast Stadium at 7:00 PM (6:00 Central). The Miracle send LHP Kyle Aselton (5-3, 3.84) to the hill against Manatees RHP Robert Hinton (4-3, 3.32).

is Ryan Crew officially an outfielder now?

Well, when your infield is Heether-Escobar-Irribaren, who is he going to replace? I know some will argue that he is more of a prospect than Heether at this point, but I don't think the Brewers are ready to give up on Heether just yet.
