the text of that article appears in yesterday's link report

Actually, it's in the "Your 2006 West Virginia Power" thread. All the feature stories that are written are placed in one of the affiliate threads. That way, all the features are grouped together for a nice season-long collection that can then be archived as well.

And yes, the vast majority of these feature stories are linked on a player's Brewerfan Player Index Page, and as long as the links remain active, provide a nice way to learn more about a player or look back on older articles.

That Brevard bunch has been in a really sorry funk for nearly a couple of months now. Someone with more knowledge of the FSL can verify this, but most of the Brevard road games don't involve hotel stays, I believe, but back and forth daily bus trips, similar to all those High Desert Cal League Southern Division games. It sure would be sweet to see the Brewers hook up with a Carolina League affiliate next season -- but the way the organization treats the high-A level in terms of philosophy, buyer beware.

Stars Survive Ninth to Keep Win Streak Going

Yovani Gallardo worked seven strong innings and Huntsville survived a scare in the ninth inning and hung on to defeat Mississippi 4-3 Friday night in the middle game of a five-game set at Trustmark Park. The Stars have won a season-high five straight games on the road and six of eight on the current road swing to improve to 25-22 in the second half and move into second place, three and a half games behind front-running Tennessee in the North Division, while the Braves fell to 20-28 in the second half.

Jarrod Saltalamacchia led off the ninth inning against Joe Valentine with a double and scored on a one-out single by Josh Burrus that trimmed the lead to 4-3. Pinch-hitter Josh Arteaga walked before Mike Rozema lined out to first baseman Brad Nelson, who doubled off Arteaga to end the game. Valentine recorded his fifth save in eight chances and has gone two innings in seven of his 12 appearances since joining the Stars.

Valentine took over for Gallardo with runners at first and second and nobody out in the home eighth and retired Yunel Escobar on a fly ball to right field that moved Rozema to third base. He scored on a wild pitch, to make it 4-2, that also moved Onil Joseph to second base. Chipper Jones grounded out to move Joseph to third and Valentine retired Brandon Jones on a fly ball to end the inning. Chipper Jones went hitless in four at-bats in the first of two scheduled rehab games with the Braves.

The Stars took a 2-1 lead into the seventh inning and scored on a throwing error by shortstop Luis Hernandez and on a fielder?s choice grounder by Ron Acuna to push their lead to three. Acuna went hitless in five at-bats and lost a season-high 10-game hitting streak. Ryan Braun doubled in a first inning run for Huntsville and an Escobar error in the second inning allowed Ozzie Chavez to score to give the visitors a 2-0 lead.

Hernandez delivered a two-out single in the second inning that plated Rosamond, who had walked, to cut the visitors lead to 2-1 and produce the first earned run against the Stars? right-hander in 18 1/3 innings on the road. Gallardo allowed only four singles, walked two and struck out nine to earn his third win. ?He was dominant, giving us the type of start we really have come to expect from him? said Stars? manager Don Money.

The series continues Saturday night and the Stars right-hander and Mississippi native Tim Dillard while the Braves will counter with right-hander Kyle Davies. Coverage of the game begins at 6:50 p.m. central time and can be heard locally on ESPN Radio 1450 AM and through the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com.

Sounds Fall 4-2, Suffer Fourth Straight Loss

ALBUQUERQUE ? The Nashville Sounds dropped their fourth straight game on Friday evening at Isotopes Park, falling 4-2 to Albuquerque in the opener of a four-game series.

Nashville (63-57) had its lead in the PCL American Conference Northern Division reduced to just a half-game over Iowa, its smallest margin since taking over the division lead on April 20.

The Sounds? four-game skid is one shy of the club?s longest this season.

The visitors grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Tony Gwynn walked and later scored on Andrew Beattie?s RBI double off Albuquerque starter Yusmeiro Petit. Beattie finished 2-for-3 in the contest, Nashville?s lone multiple-hit effort of the night.

Albuquerque responded with single runs in each of the first three innings to pull ahead 3-1 against Sounds starter Zach Jackson. The first two runs came home on groundouts and the third when Petit helped his own cause by scoring on a Mike Kinkade sacrifice fly.

The Isotopes increased the lead to 4-1 in the sixth with three consecutive one-out singles, the last of which by Edgar Gonzalez plated Tom Wilson and chased Jackson from the contest. Chris Demaria came on in relief for Nashville with runners on the corners and fanned the next two batters to escape the jam.

Dave Krynzel and Chad Moeller opened the seventh with back-to-back doubles off Petit to make it a 4-2 ballgame.

Petit (4-4) picked up the victory after turning in a quality start for the Isotopes. He allowed two runs on five hits while striking out four over seven innings.

Ex-Sound Brad Clontz struck out the side in the top of the ninth to notch his team-leading 17th save of the year for Albuquerque.

Jackson (2-5) allowed four runs on eight hits over 5 1/3 innings and suffered his third loss in four starts since rejoining Nashville from Milwaukee. His ERA over that four-game stretch stands at 8.22 (21ER / 23.0 IP).

Dennis Sarfate turned in his third consecutive solid relief outing for the Sounds. The right-hander retired all six batters he faced over two scoreless frames and has allowed only one hit over his last six frames of work.

The teams continue the series with an 8:05 p.m. CT meeting on Saturday evening. Right-hander Carlos Villanueva (4-0, 2.97) will man the bump for the Sounds. Albuquerque will counter with southpaw Jason Vargas (2-3, 5.10).

Final: Delmarva (O's) 12, West Virginia 3,

West Virginia Site Game Summary:

SHOREBIRDS BEAT POWER UNDER PROTEST

Friday night's game between the West Virginia Power and Delmarva Shorebirds was one sided for the most part with the Shorebirds dominating in every phase of the game as they beat the Power 12-3. However the game was played under protest because the home plate umpire Dan Oliver, who suffered a concussion a few days before, called the balls and strikes for the first six innings of the game, and had to leave due to illness just before the seventh inning. Power manager Mike Guerrero protested the game because he believed Oliver was not fit to start the contest.

Mark Fleisher hit a two-run double in the top of the first inning to give the Shorebirds an early lead. Delmarva scored four times in the fourth inning to pull away. Ryan Finan knocked in the first run on an RBI single and Kyle Dahlberg drove in the second run with a sacrifice fly. With runners on second and third base, Lorenzo Scott hit a groundball up the middle of the infield, Power second baseman Mike Bell made a terrific diving stop on the ball, but his throw to first base went into the Power dugout, allowing two more runs to score. The Power scored their first run of the game on Lorenzo Cain's RBI single in the fifth inning. Delmarva answered that with Stu Musslewhite's run-scoring single in the home half of the inning.

Delmarva scored three times in the sixth inning on RBI singles from Vito Chiaravalloti, Finan and Quincy Ascencion. Angel Salome ripped an RBI single in the seventh inning to make it a 10-2 contest. Chiaravalloti struck again for Delmarva in the seventh inning with a two run-double. The Power scored the final run of the game on Lorenzo Cain's RBI double in the top of the ninth.

After the home plate umpire Dan Oliver left in the seventh inning, his partner Tim Bretzke took over behind home plate, Delmarva pitcher Josh Potter became the third base umpire and Delmarva outfielder Danny Figueroa became the first base umpire.

Chorye Spoone (6-7) got the win, and Steve Garrison (5-5) got the loss. The Power are 62-54 on the year and 23-24 in the second half after the loss while the Shorebirds improved to 52-61 overall and 16-30 in the second half after the win.

The Power will continue the four game series against the Delmarva Shorebirds at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium on Saturday night. Right hander David Hernandez (5-7, 4.18) will make the start for Delmarva and the Power will counter with right hander Will Inman (9-1, 1.48). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM (6:05 Central).

West Virginia Box Score and Game Log Link:

Probably the first time I've ever heard of platers for the home team taking over for the umpire...that's solid grounds for protest, no doubt...they might have been better off just calling a delay and finishing the game tommorrow...

Final: Helena 10, Missoula (Diamondbacks) 5

Helena Team site Game Wrap:

The Brewers Win Big

The Helena Brewers ended the recent home stand with a win Friday night, as they handled the Missoula Osprey 10-5. The win was their second in a row going into this weekends road trip against the Great Falls White Sox.

Zach Clem got things going for the Brewers, getting a solo homer in the bottom of the second. Missoula responded in the top half of the fifth with a run of their own, but the tie did not last long as Helena scored two more runs in the bottom half of the inning, led by Chuckie Caufield?s home run. The Osprey rallied back to get the lead, scoring three runs in the fourth and fifth, but thanks to Chris Errecart's grand slam in the bottom of the sixth, and the three other runs the Brewers scored, Helena regained a big lead 10-4. Missoula scored one run in the ninth, but that was all they would accomplish, as the Brewers would win the game 10-5. Roque Mercedes got the win for Helena, relieving Jose Beltre by going five innings, and giving up only two runs. Helena will be in Great Falls this weekend, and back on Monday to take on the Billings Mustangs.

Helena Box Score and Game Log:

Chris Errecart with an absolutely huge game. I would think that the Brewers will aggressively promote he and Gillespie next year, even if they didnt this year...I'd look to see them both in Brevard to start the year...

Really interesting that Jackson is still struggling. He never really had a dominant stretch. Even while his ERA was solid in AAA, he wasn't having Yo/Inman performances. Heck, they weren't as impressive as Eveland, Fernandez, and Hendrickson even.

Good to see Toby's boy Roque Mercedes with 5 innings. Seems that's the most we've seen from our young kids.

Grand slam lifts Brewers past Osprey

By TOM COTTON - Independent Record Sports Editor

Chris Errecart says he is feeling confident when he steps up to the plate.

Friday night?s game against Missoula should do little to dampen his enthusiasm.

The University of California product swatted a grand slam in the sixth inning and drove in five runs, helping the Helena Brewers to a 10-5 win over the Osprey.

Errecart was 2-for-4 at the plate and is developing into one of the most dangerous offensive players in the Pioneer League. He has eight home runs to his credit this season and has raised his batting average to .321 after hitting under .200 to start the season.

?It wasn?t so much a struggle with the wood bats, it was just me getting ahead of myself,? he said. ?As the season moved along I was getting the hits I wasn?t getting before.?

Errecart?s slam highlighted a seven-run sixth inning which turned a close ball game into a rout.

He drove a pitch by Missoula?s Brett Reynolds over the left field wall much to the delight of the 973 fans at Kindrick Legion Field.

?It was a 1-1 count and the first pitch I was sitting on a slider,? Errecart said. ?The pitch was up. I thought it was a ball, but it was called a strike. After that I decided just to react. It was a fastball and I hit it well.?

The sixth inning was made even more miserable for Missoula thanks to a complete meltdown by their battery.

Jason Neighborgall started the inning for the Brewers and he unleashed four wild pitches in a two-batter span. Missoula catcher Gerardo Bustamante had two passed balls in the frame.

When the damage was done a 4-3 Missoula lead became a 10-4 blowout in favor of Helena.

The Brewers punished the Osprey batters with three home runs in the contest. Zach Clem and Chuckie Caufield each had solo home runs in the second and third innings, respectively.

Helena?s pitching was generally solid throughout the contest with Roque Mercedes picking up the win with five innings of good relief work.

He struck out three batters and gave up two earned runs over that span.

Helena is now lurking one-game behind first-place Billings in the Pioneer League?s North Division. They have won three of their last four games.

?I always thought when I got here that this team has a lot of good players and when the team gelled, it would fall into a groove,? Errecart said.

The Brewers now will play two games on the road, heading to Great Falls. Both contests will start at 7:00 PM (8:00 Central).
