Rockies adjust to unique conditions

By TODD ZEIDLER

Casper Star-Tribune staff writer

The wildfire that has charred nearly 10,000 acres on Casper Mountain is forcing almost everyone to take precautionary measures, including the Casper Rockies.

The Rockies, who started a seven-game homestand Wednesday, are taking every precaution they can, but manager P.J. Carey said baseball is the least of his worries.

"More importantly than us is the community. It is such a shame to see such devastation in this community and the homes being evacuated," said Carey before Wednesday's game against the Helena Brewers. "That's the real problem we're facing not our baseball game. It's very unfortunate."

General manager Danny Tetzlaff said the health department has deemed the air quality to be safe for any outdoor physical activity and will continue to monitor it throughout the week.

But that hasn't kept Carey from taking precautions with his team.

The Rockies' batting practice was changed from having all 18 position players on the field shagging balls and hitting, to taking turns in groups of six. The players also stretched inside.

Carey said he wants to minimize the time that players are breathing the smoky air by preventing them from spending the length of the batting practice session and the length of the game outdoors.

"I wouldn't be able to do that if these kids hadn't worked so hard up to this point in the season," Carey said. "I think we are going to get the same work done a little differently."

The conditioning workouts for the pitching staff have also been altered. Instead of working out at the field, the pitchers are meeting at the YMCA in the mornings this week to get their running workouts done.

Carey said the only player on the team who could be adversely affected is pitcher Jason Hanna, who has an asthma condition. But Hanna seems to be doing just fine.

"Hanna has an asthma problem, and he was the first one out here shagging balls during batting practice," Carey said. "I had to run him off the field."

Along with Carey, Tetzlaff has also made protecting the players his first priority.

"In a nutshell, we are here for the players, and we are not going to do anything to put anyone in danger," he said. "If it was a decision we needed to make to call the game, we would do that. We would play doubleheaders or make a game up there if we need to cancel one."

If needed, the Rockies would be able to play a make-up game with the Brewers during a four-game set in Helena starting Aug. 27.

For this homestand, though, Tetzlaff knows the attendance figures are going to be down, but he realizes that playing a game isn't the most important thing in a trying time for the community.

"We will be affected by it. I am not going to deny that," Tetzlaff said. "(But) there is more important things going on than baseball. I am more concerned about that. I don't want people to lose their homes. (Baseball) isn't life."

Great performances thus far by Garrison, Miller, and Villanueva.

Darren Ford now has 29 XBH to go with the gaudy 58 SBs. Now, if he could cut down on the 118 Ks in 427 Abs, that would give us something to get really excited about.

Nix with (another) bomb for Nashville and Bad Chad--still bad, but bad with a 3R HR.

Edit:

Quote:
Through 3, Yovani is perfect with 4 k's. Also Laynce Nix has yet another HR, he's unstoppable.

Tsk, tsk... etiquette! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif

If Ryan Braun hits .360/.540 for 240 ABs (assuming 4 ABs per game for their remaining 19 games) at AA, does he even start at AA next year? I'm all about success at every level and taking it slow, but I can't help but think about how huge a .900 OPS in the Southerh League is.

He still strikes out a bunch (>1:4 AB). If he continues to hit, does anyone think TC would get agressive with him? There's no prospect blocking him (unless you think Rottino is a 3B) at AAA and they've got to stick Heether somewhere with Gamel in Brevard...
