Earlier in the week I indicated that Huntsville did not need to stay in front of Chattanooga, the first-half champs, in order to win the second half should they hopefully overtake Tennessee. Corrected info here --

Stars back home, eye standings

Huntsville involved in a pennant race with Tennessee

By MARK McCARTER

Huntsville Times Sports Staff, markcolumn@aol.com

The Huntsville Stars open a five-game homestand tonight in a new place - a pennant race.

The Stars, who'll host Carolina tonight through Saturday, are 3 1/2 games behind Tennessee in the Southern League North race with three weeks remaining in the season.

Huntsville is 26-23 this half, having gone 7-3 on its last road trip and winning 15 of 20 since July 22.

The pennant race will be complete with scoreboard-watching as the Stars chase Tennessee and try to fend off Chattanooga.

The schedule is only somewhat favorable for the Stars. They are 2-3 against Carolina this year, but must travel to West Tenn next week for five games. The Diamond Jaxx have won 16 of 20 games against Huntsville this season. Then follow series against Mississippi (against whom the Stars are 9-6) and Birmingham (12-7 Stars' edge).

Tennessee has series left with Mississippi, Carolina and Mobile, all playing sub-.500 ball this half, and with first-half South champ Jacksonville.

Chattanooga, four games back of Tennessee, has only five of its remaining 20 games at home, including a season-ending set at West Tenn. Chattanooga won the first half, so a Lookouts' sweep would send the North team with the best overall record into the playoffs against Chattanooga. West Tenn has the edge over Tennessee (67-53 to 62-58) right now.

We'll work on getting some clarification on the Pioneer League playoff system. Billings, again in first place, was the Northern Division first-half champ.

If Helena Brew or others in the know are reading, please clarify whether it's overall season record or best second-half record that comes in to play should Billings win the second half as well, thanks.

Hopefully the H-Crew can win the division outright, and take way all doubt.

Power to begin eight-game stand

The West Virginia Power may have fallen 10 games out of first place, but the team?s player prospects seem to be on the rise.

The Power, which opens an eight-game homestand against the Hickory Crawdads at 7:05 tonight (6:05 Central) at Appalachian Power Park, leads the South Atlantic League in hitting at .276, and two of its players, right fielder Lorenzo Cain and catcher Angel Salome, have combined to lead the league in three offensive categories.

The 20-year-old Cain is first in batting average (.309) and hits (141), and Salome, who?s also 20, leads in RBIs with 84.

In addition, 19-year-old left fielder Michael Brantley, who started the season slowly, batted .337 in July and is .341 in August for an overall mark of .299 to rank ninth in the league.

The league?s hottest pitcher is probably Power right-hander Will Inman, 19, who owns a 1.48 earned run average in 85 1/3 innings but, because of an injury earlier in the season, has not pitched enough to qualify for the league lead. Lexington?s Tom Fairchild is first with a 1.66 ERA in 108 2/3 innings.

Inman, a native of the Martinsville, Va., area, is 9-1 and is scheduled to face the Crawdads on Friday.

For the season, the Power is 62-56 and 33-22 at home.

On Monday, the Power added left-hand pitcher Brandon Parillo, who appeared in seven games with the Power early in the season and then was assigned to Helena of the short-season Pioneer League. In 12 games with Helena, he was 3-3 with a 3.77 ERA.

Cain hoping to make SAL history for the Power

Jack Bogaczyk

Charleston Daily Mail Sports Editor

It's been a very offensive season for the West Virginia Power.

While the home team at Appalachian Power Park hasn't lived up to its nickname -- the Power ranks 13th among 16 South Atlantic League teams in home runs -- these Brewers are plenty good at the plate.

West Virginia leads the league in hitting (.276) by a robust seven points as an eight-game homestand opens tonight at 7:05 (6:05 Central) against Hickory, in for a four-game series. Right fielder Lorenzo Cain has gone 7-for-11 in his last three games to raise his SAL-best batting average to .309.

"It's in there, as far as being a good athlete goes," Power hitting coach Mike Lum said of Cain, when asked if he expected the outfielder's numbers at the plate. "It is kind of surprising when you consider he hasn't played much baseball growing up, that he's had such a tremendous start."

Cain was the most valuable player in the rookie Arizona League last summer, batting .356. With 10 more hits, he will take the single-season hits record for Charleston's two decades of Class A baseball (1987-2006). Reds farmhand Bobby Perna had 150 in 1992.

Cain's special season could dredge up more history. If he hangs on to lead the SAL in hitting, he will be the first Charleston batting champ in 20 SAL seasons.

The last hitting champ in Charley West baseball was in the city's final Triple A season (1983), when Cleveland farmhand Jack Perconte led the International League with a .346 average for the Charlies. The infielder went on to a seven-year Major League career with the Dodgers, Indians, Mariners and White Sox.

"What I've tried to stress with 'Zo is ?being on time,' " Lum said. "We moved his hands from a high position to a lower position, back. He didn't have a lot of hand movement. He's been pretty consistent, but this recent stretch, he's hitting the ball harder."

Lum also said Cain has benefited "greatly" from batting second between team base-stealing leader Darren Ford (55 steals) and catcher Angel Salome, who leads the SAL in runs batted in with 84.

"Cain is seeing a lot more fastballs than he might if he didn't have Ford in front and Salome behind him," Lum said.

Salome's RBI total, while not near the Charleston Class A record of 102 by Jason Parsons in 1997, could recall one of the city's great baseball names if he wins the SAL RBI title - another Charleston first.

The city hasn't had a league RBI champion since 1963, when Bob Chance won the Class AA Eastern League Triple Crown with a .343 average, 26 homers and 114 RBI.

Hickory's Brad Corley, heading into town for a four-game series, is only two RBI behind Salome. Power third baseman Mat Gamel ranks fourth in the SAL with 75 RBI.

***

It is apparent that Lum, hired by Milwaukee in the offseason after he had spent 17 seasons teaching hitting in the White Sox organization, has made a difference in the Power with his "balance, vision, rhythm, timing" philosophy.

Left fielder Michael Brantley (.299) is also in the league's top 10 in hitting, and Tony Festa (.294) has climbed into the top 15. Festa, who has taken over at first base since the Aug. 2 promotion of Ned Yost to high Class A Brevard, is hitting .395 this month.

"Tony, at the beginning of the season, had an early stride and a double tap (with his foot)," Lum said. "Now, he's more on time. He's a very intelligent guy, and the things he works on and does on his own are the kind of things I like to see in a hitter.

"He's gotten into a groove since he started playing every day. I pay attention a lot to situation statistics, and Tony's gotten a lot of two-out RBI for us. He's really improved."

Festa is batting .348 with runners in scoring position, and four points higher in that situation with two outs.

Power points -- The Power made a roster move Monday, bringing left-handed pitcher Brandon Parillo back to Charleston for the second time this season. He had spend the bulk of the year in Helena, going 3-3 with a 3.77 ERA in 12 appearances. Parillo threw in seven games with the Power this season, going 1-0 with a 9.31 ERA. The move brings the Power roster to the 25-player maximum. The team had been playing with 24. ... The Power's current three-game losing streak matches the longest of the club's second half (23-26), but West Virginia hasn't won more than three in a row (twice), either ... Salome and Gamel ranks 1-2 among Milwaukee farmhands in RBI, while ford (55) and Cain (30) are 1-2 in steals.

***

The Power hasn't helped itself in the field. The club's 169 errors are the third-most in the league. Kannapolis (188) and Hickory (178) are worse than the Power ... Power pitching ace Will Inman (9-1, 1.48) is scheduled to work Thursday night ... West Virginia has 13 of its final 20 games at home. The season attendance is 201,989 to date, with the Charleston baseball record of 234,160 set last year. With a current per-game average of 3,811, the Power needs to average only 2,475 per game to break that season mark ... Milwaukee's exclusive window to negotiate with the Power for renewal of a two-year Player Development Contract expires four weeks from today.

I think the Baby Brewers game was played well before 9pm, since the box score already lists the game as being over. I know those games are played quickly...

Unless of course the box score is incorrect.

Anyway, I wanted to point out that since the beginning of the month, Brent Brewer is hitting .340 (18 for 53) with a .547 SLG. He has 1 2B, 2 3B and 2 HR over the past two weeks. Nice to see Brewer heat up over the final month of the season, hopefully he finishes the rest of the month off in the same fashion while pushing his BA closer to .300.

And a really nice outing for Anundsen this evening.

Zephyrs Rally To Defeat Sounds In Extras

NASHVILLE, Tenn. ? New Orleans shortstop Josh Labandeira delivered a two-out RBI single in the top of the tenth inning to lead the visiting Zephyrs to a come-from-behind 6-4 victory over the Nashville Sounds on Tuesday evening at Greer Stadium in the opener of a four-game series.

The Zephyrs scored the final five runs of the contest, recovering from a late 4-1 deficit to force extras, to hand the Sounds their seventh loss in their last eight home contests.

Nashville (65-59), which fell to 4-8 in extra-inning contests, retained its two-game lead over Iowa in the PCL American Conference Northern Division as the Cubs lost at Round Rock.

In the top of the tenth, Tyrell Godwin singled with one out against Sounds reliever Alec Zumwalt and stole second as George Lombard fanned for the second out of the inning. After an Alberto Castillo walk, Labandeira laced his run-scoring knock to right to plate Godwin, and as Castillo attempted to advance to third, Nashville catcher Vinny Rottino?s throw flew into right field to allow Castillo to score an unearned run for a 6-4 advantage.

The Sounds led 4-1 in the eighth inning before Marlon Byrd tied the contest with a three-run homer off Allan Simpson.

Chris Barnwell gave the Sounds an early 1-0 lead when he belted his fourth home run of the season, a one-out solo shot to right-center against Zephyrs starter Kip Bouknight in the bottom of the first inning.

Dave Krynzel continued the power barrage in the second when he swatted a two-run homer off Bouknight. The mammoth blast to center, which easily cleared the 16 feet of walls, was the outfielder?s sixth of the year. Rottino, who had walked, scored on the roundtripper.

New Orleans got on the board in the top of the sixth when Kenny Kelly scored on a straight steal of home with two outs, making the score 3-1.

Nashville got the run back in the bottom of the frame when Laynce Nix led off with a double and scored two batters later on Andrew Beattie?s RBI two-bagger. The knock was Beattie?s first at Greer Stadium as a member of the Sounds; he joined the club on its recent road trip.

Nix went 2-for-4, his ninth multi-hit effort in 15 games with Nashville this season. The outfielder is batting .436 (24-for-55) since joining the Sounds.

The Sounds couldn?t capitalize further in the sixth, however, after having the bases loaded with one out against Z?s reliever Jason Norderum. Zach Sorensen grounded into a force at the plate and then, with pinch-hitter Jermaine Clark at the plate, Krynzel broke for third in the middle of the at-bat and Rottino was ultimately thrown out at the plate following a rundown to end the inning.

The Zephyrs tied the contest at 4-4 with one swing of the bat in the top of the eighth when Byrd crushed Simpson?s offering over the right field wall for a three-run homer. The blast was his fifth of the year and fourth in the last four games. Kelly (single) and Henry Mateo (walk) scored on the tater.

The blown save was Simpson?s team-leading fourth of the year and the Sounds? 20th overall as a club in 2006.

Z?s reliever Chris Booker (2-0) was the beneficiary of the late New Orleans rally and picked up his second victory.

Kevin Gryboski kept the Sounds off the board in the bottom of the tenth to secure his sixth save of the campaign.

Zumwalt (0-2) took the loss for the Sounds after surrendering two runs in his lone inning of work.

Nashville starter Ben Hendrickson, who took a no-decision after leaving the contest in line for his 10th victory, worked 5 2/3 innings and allowed one run on two hits. He walked two batters and struck out five.

The teams continue the series with another 6 p.m. meeting on Wednesday evening at Greer. The Sounds send southpaw Zach Jackson (2-5, 4.50) to the hill to face New Orleans right-hander Andrew Good (8-7, 4.89).

Nashville Box Score and Game Log:

Laynce Nix may not hiy .400 for the rest of the season, but his showing so far demonstrates why he was such a highly thought of prospect to begin with. I think Nix has a lot in common with Gabe Gross...and we could see him get a shot in the outfield sooner rather than later, especially since he's one of Doug's guys...

Thurman Twirls Gem in Stars Win

Corey Thurman worked seven strong innings and chipped in with a key two-run double to push Huntsville past Carolina 8-1 Tuesday night in the opener of a five-game series at Joe Davis Stadium. The Stars improved to 27-23 in the second half but could gain no ground on first place Tennessee, which came from behind to beat Mississippi in ten innings. The Mudcats fell to 22-29 and lost for just a third time in their last 11 games.

Lou Palmisano walked with two outs in the second inning, moved to second on an Ozzie Chavez single and scored, along with the Stars? shortstop, when Thurman belted James Russ?s first offering into the alley in left-center field for a two-run, two bagger, his first of the season. Drew Anderson and Palmisano provided back-to-back run-scoring singles in the third to push the home team?s lead to 4-0.

Thurman retired the first 13 hitters he faced before Brett Carroll tucked a high fly ball just inside the fair pole down the left field line for his sixth home run with the Mudcats and his third against the Stars. A two-out single in the seventh by Josh Pressley was the only other hit allowed by Thurman, who picked up his fifth win of the year and third at home. He walked two and struck out six and lasted seven innings for a fifth time this season. Gerrit Simpson blanked the visitors over the final two frames.

Russ was charged with four runs on seven hits and took the loss to drop to 6-9. Kevin Cave gave up a two-run single to Brad Nelson and a two-run, pinch-hit single to Jeff Eure later in the inning to account for the final margin. Nelson, Callix Crabbe and Ryan Braun each had a pair of hits to pace a 12-hit attack and six different players scored at least one run.

The series continues Wednesday night with southpaw Steve Hammond making the start for Huntsville against Mudcats? left-hander Manu Olivera. Coverage of the game begins at 6:50 p.m. central time and can be heard locally on ESPN Radio 1450 AM and through the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com.

Huntsville Box Score and Game Log:

A recent check of his stats over at minorleaguesplits.com shows that Braun kills lefties while only hitting righties to the tune of about an .820 OPS...the good news is that would still be a very solid OPS in the Southern League..

Milb Game Wrap:

Manatees shut out Yankees

Four hurlers combined on a six-hitter as Brevard County waited out four scoreless innings by Carl Pavano to beat visiting Tampa, 5-0, on Tuesday.

Sam Narron tossed a three-hitter over four innings, striking out two and walking two to lower his ERA to 3.12 in 43 1/3 innings for the Manatees (21-29).

Josh Wahpepah (6-8 ) pitched three innings of shutout relief before Joe Thatcher gave up a hit in the eighth and Josh Alliston tossed a 1-2-3 ninth.

Pavano, on rehab from New York, pitched a one-hitter over four shutout innings. He struck out five, walked one and retired nine consecutive batters after allowing a first-inning single to Alcides Escobar.

Gabriel Medina (0-1) was charged with the loss for the Yankees (28-24) after giving up three runs in the fifth.

CJ Medlin blasted a two-run homer in the fifth and Brendan Katin lined an RBI single in the seventh for Brevard County.--Max Lance/MLB.com

Brevard County Box Score and Game Log

Brendan Katin deserves to be in AA today, not next season, but right now. I hope they give him ample opportunity next year, because his hitting this year has been as close to dominant in Brevard as there can be. Joe Thatcher should probably be on the plane from Orlando to Huntsville as well...and kudes to Wahpepah for pulling ot together..

WV Power Site Game Review

POWER WALK TO VICTORY

The lead changed hands four times in Tuesday night?s game between the West Virginia Power and Hickory Crawdads at Appalachian Power Park before the game ended with Mike Bell drawing a bases loaded walk in the bottom of the ninth inning, as the Power went on to win 7-6 to take the first game of the series.

The Hickory Crawdads went up 2-0 in the top of the first inning on an RBI triple from Brad Corley and a run scoring single from Jason Delaney. The Power cut the lead in half on Angel Salome?s RBI single. The RBI for Salome was his 85th, he singled three times on the night but left the game in the seventh inning after injuring his left ankle sliding into second base. The extent of his injury has yet to be determined. West Virginia plated three runs in the top of the second inning to take their first lead. Kenny Holmberg and Ryan Barba ripped back to back RBI singles and Holmberg scored later in the inning on Michael Brantley?s groundout.

Cameron Blair tied the game at 4-4 in the top of the fourth inning on a two run homer, his fourth of the year. Hickory took their second lead of the game in the fifth inning after Tony Mansolino scored on a wild pitch. In the bottom of the fifth inning Mat Gamel doubled in Lorenzo Cain to tie the game and Gamel scored later in the inning on Tony Festa?s groundout to give the Power the lead. Hickory tied the game in the seventh inning when Wanell Macia reached on a fielder?s choice to bring in Jason Delaney. In the bottom of the ninth inning with the bases loaded and one out, Mike Bell drew a seven pitch walk to bring in the winning run.

Darren Ford, Angel Salome and Ryan Barba all had three hits for the Power. Five Power players in all had multi hit games. Lorenzo Cain hit safely twice, giving him 143 hits on the year, seven away from tying the franchise record for hits in a season. The last at bat victory for the Power was their ninth this season.

Brandon Parillo (2-0) who was just called up on Tuesday pitched four solid innings out of the bullpen, surrendering a run on three hits with four strikeouts and got the win, while Matt Swanson (4-4) got the loss. The Power are 63-56 on the year and 24-26 in the second half after the win while the Crawdads fell to 60-60 overall and 27-24 in the second half after the loss.

The Power will continue the four game series against the Hickory Crawdads at Appalachian Power Park on Wednesday night. Right hander Jared Hughes (3-3, 5.40) will make the start for Hickory and the Power will counter with right hander Matt Kretzschmar (3-4, 6.08 ). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM

West Virginia Box Score and Game Log:

Lorenzo cain is about to set the team record for hits in a season, while still managing to walk 52 times in 450 ab's...that's amazing pitch selection and bat control for a guy in single A...Can't help but be impressed by that...

Final, Game Two: Arizona Cubs 7, Arizona Brewers 4

Arizona Brewer Game Two Box Score and Game Log:

RHP Alexandre Periard was in line for the win after five strong innings; Eric Newton (San Jose State) drives in all four Brewer runs; A-Crew starting to get some sidelined guys back, such as Newton a couple of days ago and C/OF Isaac Palencia today -- the roster limits are so high (35) at Helena and Arizona that players rarely have to be placed officially on the disabled list, they simply don't show up in the box scores for a while. There are several players who are "missing" in this manner and we'll toss some of those names out there for consideration in a post later this week...

Sounds' bullpen blows its 20th lead

Zephyrs pull out victory in the10th

By BRYAN MULLEN

Tennessean Staff Writer

What do Google.com, Yahoo.com and the Nashville Sounds bullpen have in common?

They're all responsible for a ton of hits.

The Sounds' bullpen blew its 20th lead of the season Tuesday night, gagging away a three-run advantage in the eighth before the Zephyrs won 6-4 in the 10th before 5,738 at Greer Stadium.

"You give them free passes, and if you're not able to get ahead of guys, you're going to get in trouble," Sounds Manager Frank Kremblas said. "(New Orleans) took care of that."

Nashville (65-59), which has lost six of its previous eight games, returned to Greer after playing 12 consecutive road games. The Sounds looked energized through the first seven innings, but once again, the bullpen couldn't bull its way through the final few innings.

Trailing 4-1 in the eighth, New Orleans' Marlon Byrd hit a three-run home run to right off Nashville reliever Allan Simpson to tie the score at 4. It was Byrd's fourth consecutive game with a home run.

That set up a game-winning RBI single to right by Josh Labandeira, in the 10th. New Orleans (65-58) added another run on the play on a throwing error by catcher Vinny Rottino.

Nashville's scoring came on a solo home run by Chris Barnwell, a two-run home run by Dave Krynzel, and an RBI double by Andrew Beattie.

Sounds starting pitcher Ben Hendrickson was on during his 5 2/3 innings of work, allowing only one earned run on two hits.

"He did a good job," Kremblas said. "He threw all three pitches for strikes and was able to command his fastball in and out. That makes it tough for the other team."

'Makeover' family will be honored by Sounds

By BRYAN MULLEN

Tennessean Staff Writer

It should be an extremely emotional evening thanks to the ABC television show "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition."

The Nashville Sounds are dedicating today's 6 p.m. game to the Hawkins family and to the thousands of volunteers who pitched in to build the family a new home.

In April, the Hawkins' Hendersonville home was leveled by an F3 tornado. The mother, Amy, saved the lives of her two sons by lying on top of them in the basement as the storm raged around them.

She suffered serious injuries and was paralyzed. Doctors say she will be in a wheelchair for the rest of her life.

Thanks to the TV show, thousands of volunteers and several businesses donated time, money and supplies to build the family a new home. It only took 94 hours to build the family a new home; the show is expected to air in November.

The entire Hawkins family, including father, Jerrod, who was on duty with the Brentwood Fire Department at the time of the tornado, is expected to be on hand at Greer Stadium to throw out first pitches.

Hundreds, if not thousands, of volunteers are expected to be in attendance as well. Volunteers who present a volunteer lanyard or a blue Extreme Makeover T-shirt at the box office may receive up to four reserved tickets for today's game.

Ben's wins: Sounds right-hander Ben Hendrickson entered Tuesday night's start ranked third in the Pacific Coast League with a 2.51 ERA. The PCL All-Star has held opponents to a .205 batting average and is tied for the Sounds' lead with nine wins.

Tight games: The Sounds have been involved in 47 one-run games, the most in Triple-A this season. Nashville has lost 28 one-run games, the most in the PCL.

Kelly goes home: New Orleans' Kenny Kelly had 18 stolen bases before Tuesday, but Tuesday night's might be his most memorable. The outfielder accomplished one of baseball's more rare feats when he stole home in the sixth to cut Nashville's lead to 3-1.

Hello old friend: Sounds infielder Brent Abernathy and Zephyrs outfielder George Lombard were high school teammates at The Lovett School in Atlanta. Abernathy graduated in 1996 and Lombard graduated in 1994.
