Zach Jack finding his groove again is a welcome sight.

Do we have any posters that get to their games? I am curious if the Brewers changed Zach's delivery when he went back down to AAA. It seemed like he had a lot of trouble repeating the quick, over the head trigger start to his delivery, which hurt his ability to consistantly have good control. If they did have him make a change, it could explain his initial struggles.

Sarfate - 1 inning, no hits/walks, 2ks. Maybe he's settling into the role (let's hope). Braun with another jack(12) and Hammond very tough thru 5. Welch is starting to show people he's serious about being a prospect. Decent night so far.

Cain with two multi hit games tonight. I have a man crush on him.

igor, I recall the same...just that one outing with like 3 runs allowed.

His strikeout rate seems up, and walk rate down

Also, Helena ruins the chances at the perfect night...in years past, this was never the case, as usually the A+ or AA teams ruined the days

Sounds Hang Ten On Isotopes In Shutout

NASHVILLE, Tenn. ? One night after being stomped by Albuquerque, the Sounds returned the favor on Monday evening at Greer Stadium by hanging a 10-0 defeat on the Isotopes in the third game of the four-game set.

With the victory, Nashville (70-60) maintained its four-game lead in the American Conference Northern Division over Iowa, 7-3 winners over Oklahoma. The Sounds have won six of their last eight contests overall.

Sounds starter Zach Jackson (4-5) made his second consecutive strong start, allowing seven hits over six scoreless innings. He walked one batter and struck out four to pick up victories in back-to-back outings for the first time this season.

Jackson combined with three relievers in notching the Sounds? 11th shutout win of the year. The 10-0 margin of victory matched Nashville?s largest this season, previously accomplished in an 11-1 win against Oklahoma on April 14.

It was a collective effort by the Nashville offense as each position player recorded an RBI during the club?s 11-hit attack. All of the starters had a hit or scored a run, led by a two-hit, two-run effort by outfielder Tony Gwynn, who homered.

After Albuquerque left the bases loaded in the top of the first inning, the Sounds did not squander such an opportunity in the bottom half of the frame as the home team batted around against Isotopes starter Jeff Fulchino to produce a five-run inning.

Gwynn and Drew Anderson had bunt singles sandwiched around Chris Barnwell getting hit by a Fulchino pitch to fill the bags for Graham Koonce, who drew a four-pitch walk to force home Gwynn with the game?s first run. Andrew Beattie and Jermaine Clark followed with a RBI singles to right and left, respectively, that increased the advantage to 3-0.

Chad Moeller lifted a sacrifice fly to right to bring in Koonce for a 4-0 lead but Beattie was thrown out attempting to advance to third on the play for the second out of the inning. The scoring continued as Dave Krynzel dropped an RBI double into the right field corner to up the Nashville advantage to five runs.

Barnwell increased the Sounds? lead to 7-0 in the home half of the fourth with a two-out, two-run single to right off Fulchino that scored Moeller and Krynzel.

Krynzel, the Sounds? right fielder, robbed Isotopes right fielder Matt Cepicky of a three-run home run in the top of the sixth inning, leaping to make a full-extension catch above the wall to record an out.

Gwynn added to the lead in the seventh when he greeted Albuquerque reliever and Nashville native Wes Wilkerson with a solo homer to right, his third roundtripper of the year and first in his last 225 at-bats, dating back to May 21st against Tacoma. The four-bagger gave Gwynn his team-leading 37th multiple-hit game of the season.

Clark made it a 9-0 advantage for the home team later in the frame when his two-out double into the right field corner plated Anderson. The red-hot Clark went 2-for-4 on the evening and is batting a healthy .395 (15-for-38) in the month of August.

Anderson, who finished 1-for-5 and has hit safely in all three games since joining the Sounds on Saturday, completed the Nashville scoring in the bottom of the eighth when his bases-loaded grounder plated Krynzel for a 10-0 lead.

Dennis Sarfate worked a scoreless inning of relief behind Jackson and fanned two of his three batters faced. The right-hander has posted a 2.77 ERA (4 ER / 13.0 IP) with 15 strikeouts in his eight relief outings.

Allan Simpson struck out two during a scoreless eighth and Alec Zumwalt worked a perfect ninth to complete the shutout.

Fulchino (4-10) took the loss after surrendering seven runs (five earned) on six hits over six frames of work.

The teams wrap up the series with a 6 p.m. finale on Tuesday evening at Greer Stadium. Right-hander Carlos Villanueva (6-0, 2.91) takes his undefeated record to the hill for the Sounds to face Albuquerque right-hander Yusmeiro Petit (4-5, 4.15).

Sounds bounce back by bashing Isotopes

By Nate Rau, Nashville City Paper Sports Correspondent

After Nashville?s lackluster 11-5 loss to Albuquerque on Sunday night, Sounds manager Frank Kremblas completely shrugged off the defeat. ?Who cares?? Kremblas said. ?It?s just one game.?

In the tail end of a 144-game season, it?s easy to see why Kremblas was nonchalant about the relevance of one measly game. But if the Sounds want a second-straight Pacific Coast League American Northern Division title, ?Who cares?? is not a mentality they can afford to maintain.

The Sounds played like a team that truly cared about defending the PCL championship on Monday, following up their punchless effort with a sure-fire 10-0 win over the Isotopes at Greer Stadium.

The win keeps Nashville four games ahead of Iowa in the pennant race. The Sounds? magic number is 10.

?To come back and hit the ball as well as we did, and pitch the ball as well as we did and play catch as well as we did, when you do those three things it?s a good recipe for victory,? Sounds center fielder Tony Gwynn said. ?As we get close to the end of the season, we?re starting to hit our stride.?

Gwynn said the team is paying more attention the pennant race as the end of the season draws near. It would take a significant collapse for the Sounds to cough up their division lead and the team is playing well, collecting six wins in their last eight games.

?You can?t be too focused on it. We have to go out and win ball games for anything to happen,? Gwynn said.

The Sounds tore through Albuquerque starter Jeff Fulchino in the first inning. That?s when the team produced five runs on five hits. Five different Sounds collected RBIs during the big inning.

The big inning gave Nashville starter Zach Jackson all the support he needed. Jackson (4-5) went six innings and didn?t allow a run while scattering seven hits.

Jackson?s final stat line was aided by a highlight reel catch from right fielder Dave Krynzel in the sixth inning. Krynzel jumped and snared a would-be three-run homer by Matt Cepicky. The victory gave Jackson back-to-back wins for the first time this season.

?It was a huge play,? Kremblas said of Krynzel?s grab. ?He jumped over and took three runs away.?

Sounds shortstop Chris Barnwell added a two-run single in the fifth inning. Gwynn hit a solo homer in the seventh. In total, the Sounds churned out 11 hits and eight different players drove in runs.

Sounds sizzle, Isotopes fizzle

By BRYAN MULLEN

Tennessean Staff Writer

The game started at 6 p.m.

It was all but over 30 minutes later.

The Nashville Sounds put a five-spot on the board in the first inning, received balanced offensive production from everyone in the lineup and got another solid performance by their starting pitcher.

It added up to a 10-0 spanking of the Albuquerque Isotopes before 2,888 at Greer Stadium.

"We found some holes there in the first inning against their starter," Sounds Manager Frank Kremblas said. "That's baseball. Sometimes you hit a line drive and they catch it. Sometimes you hit a bleeder and they don't catch it. We'll take it."

It was the sixth win in eight games for the Sounds, who had every position player get at least one RBI.

Graham Koonce drew a bases-loaded walk on four pitches by Isotopes starter Jeff Fulchino (4-10).

Andrew Beattie, Jermaine Clark and Dave Krynzel followed with run-producing hits.

Nashville (70-60) later took a 7-0 lead on a two-run single by Chris Barnwell and went up 8-0 in the seventh when Tony Gwynn hit his first home run in 225 at-bats.

Sounds starting pitcher Zach Jackson flustered the Isotopes (63-65) in his six shutout innings, allowing seven hits and striking out four.

"I was just trying to get into a groove," Jackson said. "To be honest, I try not to let the score dictate how I'm going to throw out there. I wanted to stay within myself and put up zeros."

What they said: "Huge. That's a huge play. That would have given them a chance to put some runs on the board and think they can possibly make a comeback." ? Kremblas on right fielder Krynzel robbing a three-run home run by the Isotopes' Matt Cepicky in the sixth.

Pitchers would rather walk in a run than face Koonce

By BRYAN MULLEN

Tennessean Staff Writer

If it looks like opposing pitchers are being a little more careful with the Sounds' Graham Koonce, you're right. The first baseman leads the Pacific Coast League with four home runs during the past week and is second during the same span in slugging percentage (.885). Koonce hit his 16th home run on Sunday and six of his last nine hits have been for extra bases.

The respect he's earned from foes was on display early Monday night. Koonce came to the plate with the bases loaded and no outs in the first inning and walked on four pitches, giving Nashville a 1-0 lead. It was the second game in a row in which Nashville scored on a bases-loaded walk.

Krynzel the magician: Sounds outfielder Dave Krynzel made one of the team's best plays of the season in the sixth inning.

With men on first and second, the Isotopes' Matt Cepicky hit a deep fly to right. But Krynzel tracked the ball, jumped high against the right field wall and stole a three-run homer to record the second out of the inning.

The next Isotopes batter was retired to end the inning and Nashville hung on to its 7-0 lead.

A case of the Mondays: Your average 9-5 worker isn't the only one who doesn't look forward to Mondays. The Sounds are 6-11 on Mondays, their worst record for any day of the week.

Turning the tide: The Isotopes' dominating pitching against Nashville ended on Monday.

Albuquerque entered the game having recorded 60 strikeouts against the Sounds, good for 10 per game. On Sunday, Isotopes pitchers Adam Bostick, Chris Resop and Josh Stewart combined to strike out 16, tying a franchise record for a nine-inning game.

Monday was different. Sounds batters owned Albuquerque and took a 5-0 lead in the first inning and sent nine batters to the plate.

Spreading it around: Few things make a baseball manager more pleased than balanced offensive production throughout the lineup. After Monday night, consider Sounds Manager Frank Kremblas pleased.

Nashville's first seven runs were scored by seven different players. Also, through four innings, the only position player who didn't score was second baseman Andrew Beattie.

Syrupy voice: Miss Tennessee Blaire Pancake sang the national anthem prior to Monday's game. The 23-year-old Chattanooga resident was crowned Miss Tennessee in June.

Stars' Struggles Against Diamond Jaxx Continue

Jake Fox delivered a two-run double to give West Tenn the lead for good in a four-run sixth inning rally that carried the Diamond Jaxx to a 4-2 come from behind win over Huntsville Monday night in the second of a five-game set at Pringles Park. The Stars lost for a second straight day to fall to 31-25 in the second half and missed out on an opportunity to move past first place Tennessee, which fell for a second straight night at Carolina but maintains a half-game lead over Huntsville in the North Division. West Tenn improved to 29-28 in the second half and closed to within three games of the Smokies.

Aron Weston opened the home sixth with a pinch-hit double, moved to third base on a one-out single by Richard Lewis and scored on a Scott Moore base hit to trim the Stars? lead to 2-1. Moore has knocked in 17 of his 69 runs this year against Stars? pitching. Fox then followed by belting a double to center field on a 1-2 pitch that scored Lewis and Moore to put the home team in front to stay and knocked starter Steve Hammond out of the game. Travis Phelps struck out Brandon Sing and then gave up a base hit to Tony Richie that plated Fox to extend the lead to 4-2. Phelps then fanned Albenis Machado to end the inning. Hammond suffered his second loss against West Tenn in two starts and has allowed nine runs over 10 1/3 innings against the Diamond Jaxx.

Bobby Brownlie took over for starter Chris Shaver in the seventh inning and tossed two scoreless frames, allowing one hit and fanning two. He had been battered for seven runs on 10 hits and three walks over 3 1/3 innings in his last appearance against the Stars at Joe Davis Stadium on June 29. Adalberto Mendez took the hill in the ninth inning and retired the first two hitters he faced before hitting Jeff Eure. He then set down Brendan Katin on a line drive to first base to end the game and record his second save in as many chances. West Tenn has won 18 of the 22 games between the two teams and eight of the 10 games decided by one or two runs.

Brad Nelson led off the second inning with a walk, moved to third base on a two-out single by Lou Palmisano and scored on a base hit by Guilder Rodriguez, who drove in his fifth run of the season. Ryan Braun?s long, majestic home run with one out in the top of the sixth gave the visitors a 2-0 edge. Shaver allowed two runs on four hits over six innings and notched his third win in five starts against Huntsville. He walked three, struck out four and went to a full count on 10 of the 23 batters he faced.

The series continues Tuesday night with right-hander Yovani Gallardo taking the hill for Huntsville against West Tenn southpaw Isaac Pavlik. Coverage of the game begins at 6:50 p.m. central time and can be heard locally on ESPN Radio 1450 AM and through the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com.

HARD TO HANDLE

STARS CAN'T HOLD ONTO 2-0 LEAD, BUT SMOKES LOSE, TOO

Ryan Braun's 6th inning home run over the clubhouse roof in left field gave the Huntsville Stars a 2-0 lead Monday night before an all-but-empty crowd in Jackson....... In the past several games, a lead like this would have been comfortable, and fans wouldn't have been anything to worry, but this wasn't Carolina, Mississippi, or Birmingham........ For the first time in three weeks, the Stars had bigger fish on their platter. The Diamond Jaxx were the first team since Chattanooga who could give them a real battle, and they have basically owned the Stars this season, winning 17 of 21 games coming into this game with speed, good pitching, and power --- consistently....... In 21 games, the Stars had been held at the plate to a .223 average by almost relentless WT pitching, while the Diamond Jaxx were hitting .276 vs. the Stars and stealing an amazing 40 bases. Their pitching staff had logged a 2.74 ERA vs. the Stars over 21 games....... The Stars hadn't seen talent like this in awhile.

Steve Hammond had given up just three hits going into the bottom of the 6th at Pringles Park. He was already pitching better than his last start against the Diamond Jaxx, when he gave up five runs on six hits in five innings in his 2nd start for Huntsville, losing 5-4 on June 30....... Aron Weston started all the trouble, though, in the 6th with a pinch-hit double to right....... He struck out Chris Walker, who was carrying a .357 bat against the Stars on a slider, but Richard Lewis parachuted a 1-2 pitch for a single into left between Guilder Rodriguez going back and Brendan Katin and Steve Moss coming in. For the first time in the game, Hammond had allowed a runner past second....... The always-dangerous Scott Moore (4, 17, .324 vs. Huntsville) jumped on Hammond early, roping a single into right scoring Weston, shaving the Stars' lead to 2-1, and sending Lewis to 2nd.......

Pitching coach Rich Sauveur came out to talk to Hammond, but Jake Fox would deliver the big blow -- a two-run double over the head of Moss and against the wall in center field for a 3-2 lead......... Just moments before, Carolina had scored two runs in the 8th to put the final touch on their 2nd straight victory over the 1st place Tennessee Smokies. Their half-game lead would remain intact.

Travis Phelps came on and struck out slumping Brandon Sing, but Tony Richie singled to score Fox for the insurance run, the final run in WT's 4-2 victory over the Stars........ Phelps has not given up a run in 13 innings of relief in August over eight appearances. It's the most since Jerome Gamble's streak of eight at the end of last season.

The Stars have been getting some big breaks from Mississippi and Carolina the last few nights. As a result, the 3½-game lead the Smokies once had has been trimmed to a half-game, but the Stars have blown two opportunities to take the lead in the Northern Division with two weeks left in the season....... They can't take too many shots like this pass them by........ Tuesday, the Stars face Isaac Pavlik for the first time and Pavlik will face Yovani Gallardo (4-2, 1.44), our stopper supreme on a rotation of stoppers. Pavlik was a 10th round draft pick by the Rockies in 2002, rescued by the Diamond Jaxx from the indy leagues where he was 7-4, 3.09 for the New Jersey Jackals last year. He's made three starts in his six appearances this year, including a win against Tennessee on July 31. Mobile got three runs off him in five innings of work last Thursday, but that's as hard as he's been touched.

Ryan Braun's home run was his 12th of the year and he has four in his last five games...... He's hitting just .284 this month, but has driven in 15 runs, 10 of them in his last five games....... Callix Crabbe went hitless tonight after going 12-for-27 (.444) in six games. Callix has stolen 10 bases this month. Four is the most he's stolen in any of his previous four months....... Adam Heether had a 4-for-4 night for Brevard County as they beat Vero Beach Monday night......... Brad Nelson is having a .414 month. His previous best in four seasons with the Stars was a .318 May in 2004 in 110 at-bats. He has only three extra-base hits though among his 19 hits.

More Complete Summary from the Dodgers' Site:

Manatees Hold Off Dodgers

The Brevard County Manatees knocked out 14 hits and defeated the Vero Beach Dodgers 10-7 Monday night at Space Coast Stadium. David Nicholson turned in his second straight four-hit game in a losing cause for the Dodgers. The series continues Tuesday night at 7:00 PM (6:00 Central).

Brevard jumped out to a 6-0 lead after four innings against starter Jonathan Figueroa (0-7). The Dodgers lefty walked five batters in four innings and allowed six runs, all earned, on seven hits. One walk came with the bases loaded, as did a hit batter.

Vero Beach made an effort to come back, however. After picking up single runs in the fourth and fifth innings, the Dodgers turned it up a notch in the seventh. Cory Dunlap singled in Eloy Gutierrez and Drew Locke knocked in Nicholson. Two more runs scored in the eighth on a Nicholson double and Russ Mitchell single. D.J. Jackson then led off the ninth with a pinch-hit home run, his first for the Vero Beach Dodgers.

Brevard had built too much of a lead, however. Reliever Albenis Castillo walked Milko Jaramillo with the bases loaded to force in one run. That knocked him out of the game, but Ryan Crew greeted Adam Thomas with a single that scored two more and gave the Manatees a 9-2 lead at the time. Crew ended up with four hits, two RBI and two runs scored.

Final, Game One: West Virginia 7, Hagerstown (Mets) 1

Final, Game Two: West Virginia 4, Hagerstown (Mets) 0

West Virginia Site Doubleheader Summary:

CAIN BREAKS RECORD, POWER TAKE TWO FROM HAGERSTOWN

Lorenzo Cain had four hits in Monday night?s doubleheader against the Hagerstown Suns to break Bobby Perna?s franchise record for most hits in a season as the Power went on to win both games in the double header 7-1 and 4-0.

In game one Mat Gamel drove in Darren Ford on a sacrifice fly to give the Power a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Mike Bell?s RBI single scored Gamel in the third inning to give the Power a 2-0 edge. Hagerstown cut the lead in half on an RBI base hit Jose Castro in the fifth inning, and that was Hagerstown?s only run of the night. The Power offense blew up in the fifth inning. Cain?s RBI double was followed by a Gamel three-run homer, his 14th of the season and Kenny Holmberg plated the final run of the inning on a groundout to complete the five-run fifth.

In the second game the Power scored all four of their runs in the fifth inning. Ford and Cain hit back to back RBI singles, and Bell ripped a bases loaded, two-run single to cap off the frame. The RBI single for Cain was his record breaking 151st hit of the season, snapping former Charleston Wheeler Bobby Perna?s record of 150 set in 1992.

In the middle of the fifth inning Hagerstown Manager Frank Cacciatore was ejected for arguing a call at first base, and Hagerstown pitcher Brandon Nall was ejected in the bottom of the fifth inning for arguing balls and strikes.

In game one, Brandon Parillo (3-0) pitched five strong innings, allowing a run on three hits with six strikeouts to get the win and Jonathon Niese (11-9) suffered the loss. In the second game, Dave Welch (6-6) pitched five scoreless innings of two-hit ball and struck out four to earn his second victory of the home stand and Brandon Nall (3-5) got the loss. The Power are 68-57 on the year and 29-27 in the second half after the wins while the Suns fell to 49-77 overall and 21-35 in the second half after the losses.

The Power will finish the four game series against the Suns at Appalachian Power Park on Tuesday night. Right hander Deolis Guerra (6-7, 2.20) will make the start for Hagerstown and the Power will counter with left hander Steve Garrison (6-5, 3.87). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM (6:05 Central).

How convienent that the Nashville game story posted Dennis' releif stats. An excellent start for him in that role. Another note I did some projections in terms of contact rate for some players a few weeks ago, and Gamel was a guy who contact rate could use some improvement. Well in addition to his walk binge, he'd now finish at 107 Ks in 700 ABs, which for a bigtime power player is pretty good. I have a sense that he's taken a step forward in his development.

Darn it, DHonks, I thought Huntsville had won when I read your post this AM

yeah Mass. Just before hitting the hay, I checked and was shocked they lost rather late in the game. Takes some pressure off of Helena I guess. Good to see Mercedes with a decent outing

Thanks for pointing that out igor. Gamel has definitely improved a lot in that area, as he was striking out at an alarming pace last year and the beginning of this year. Nice to see him improve in that area while continuing to drive runs in as he has done all year (and all last year for that matter).

Congrats to Lorenzo Cain on breaking the all time hit record! Now let's see him take the SAL batting title.
