Link Report for Games of Monday, August 28th

Mass Haas
The thing that really stands out about Gillespie in terms of seperation is his walk/k ratio which is about even at 31/30 going into tonight. This is compared to the two other MVP candidates - Chapman and Errecart, who have a 2/5 ratio comparitively.

It's nice to kind of be excited about some of the young players the Brewers have for some time. It's pretty sad thinking about all the disappointments from Alex Fernandez, Kenny Henderson, the horrible busts of Antone Williamson, Chad Green, Kenny Felder, Gabby Martinez, etc.

And the horrible luck of Ty Hill, Jeff D'Amico(Big Daddy), JM Gold, and Neugie.

The guy that had a unbelievably great slider but didn't know where it would end up Kelly Wuensch. I believe he is one of two players in history to record 5 SO's in one inning.

Stars show some spunk

Hot Huntsville rallies for 6-5 win over Mississippi

By MARK McCARTER

Huntsville Times Sports Staff, markcolumn@aol.com

During the Stars' recent hot streak, their fundamentals - defense, baserunning, smart play - has been relatively solid. So, too, the pitching.

On Monday night, they trembled like Barney Fife reaching for his holster. It was a flashback to their ugly days of midsummer.

Watching things unfold, catcher Lou Palmisano was thinking, "This cannot happen. We can't go down this road now."

Then, as Palmisano said, "The second-half team showed up in the eighth inning."

It arrived in the dramatic, game-rescuing person of outfielder Brendan Katin, who tied things with a two-run homer, and Palmisano, whose solo homer was the margin in Huntsville's 6-5 victory over Mississippi.

"I thought all along we were going to find a way to win," said third baseman Ryan Braun, whose eighth-inning double greeted Mississippi reliever Ralph Roberts, making his season debut with the Braves and becoming the ultimate victim of the rally.

For some math:

The Stars are 38-25 and maintain a 3 1/2 game lead over both Chattanooga and Tennessee, both of whom won Monday, in the Southern League North.

The Stars' "magic number" is four; any combination of Huntsville wins and losses by Chattanooga and Tennessee to equal four will assure them the second-half division pennant.

The Stars have won seven in a row. They broke club records Monday with their 11th consecutive home win and their 21st win for the month. They have won 27 of 33 dating back to July 21 and have yet to lose at home in August.

Palmisano, dirty as "Peanuts' " Pig-Pen and with an unyielding smile, sat in the dugout a few minutes after his heroics.

"(Roberts) was leaving pitches up and it was 1-1 and I was thinking he would go right at me," Palmisano said. "I'm hitting seventh in the order, I'm not a big threat and I hadn't hit a home run in God knows how long."

The emotions went from "relief when Katin hit the home run to excitement when I hit the home run to I don't know what after that," he said.

Katin got thing going by doubling home Braun for a 1-0 lead in the first, but Katin dropped a routine fly to put Josh Burrus aboard, and Josh Arteaga singled him home. "I need to work on my defense," he said sheepishly.

Ozzie Chavez briefly regained the lead in the fifth when he singled and scored on a rocket shot by Steve Moss off the foot of third baseman Arteaga. Mike Rozema's two-run double gave Mississippi a 3-2 lead, but Brad Nelson's homer tied the game at 3-all.

Yunel Escobar's two-run single off Matt Yeatman made it 5-3 in the eighth before the Stars' rally.

Joe Valentine wrapped up his 10th save since joining the team July 15, whiffing ex-big leaguer, the player-coach Eddie Perez for the final out.

What?s up with Jeffress? Two hit batters, a wild pitch and 3 runs in just 2 innings. He had 4 KO?s and a walk which is all good but boy his focus is off.

Also, where?s Rogers? His last outing was on August 18th. He was in a rotation with Jeffress (Aug 8th, 13th & 18th) but Jeffress has thrown two times since (Aug 23rd & 28th)

Is his tendonitis acting up?

Jeffress seemed to be doing fine until Rogers started rehabbing in Arizona. I think it's obvious Mark has been giving Jeremy some "pointers."

But seriously, while you can't account for the walks and HBPs, Jeffress is an absolute groundball machine and we all know how reliable those AZL infields are. Every ball put in play yesterday was on the ground, and you rarely see the words "line drive" in his game logs.

I think AZL stats for recent high school grads are nearly meaningless, but if you really want to dig into them, the only stat (other than ERA) that isn't oustanding is walks (25 in 33.2 IP). Everything else points to a guy who could shoot up the prospect charts in the next couple years.
