Power wins as records fall

Chuck McGill

For the Charleston Daily Mail

Records are made to be broken and West Virginia Power General Manager Andy Milovich is ecstatic another one fell to pieces at Appalachian Power Park on Sunday.

A crowd of 1,821 witnessed the Power defeat the Lexington Legends, 4-0. The turnout, while sparse by normal standards, pushed the Power's season attendance to new heights, setting a new record for Charleston minor league baseball, a mark that was established last season.

"It says a lot about the community and its commitment to baseball and the ballpark," Milovich said.

The new record now stands at 233,933 for a single season, and the Power still has three home games remaining this week. Last year's season attendance was 233,555.

"It was nice as a staff to see it grow, what we set as a foundation, and how we've built upon that," Milovich said.

Milovich, however, said his goal entering the season was to reach 250,000 in attendance, but a handful of rainouts and a brutal August schedule hurt the organization's chances of reaching the mark. That will serve as extra motivation for Milovich as the Power embarks on its third season in its new ballpark in 2007.

"We want to continue to grow," he said. "We want to promote aggressively, sell aggressively and reach out and build outside of the city of Charleston."

The attendance mark wasn't the only Charleston baseball record to be surpassed this weekend, as leadoff hitter Darren Ford swiped his 62nd base to establish a new record for steals in a season.

Ford tied the record in the sixth inning and bested it with another steal in the seventh in a 3-1 win over Lexington Saturday.

On Sunday, Ford found a quicker way to round the bases, blasting a fourth-inning home run to left field to help the Power cap a two-game sweep of the Legends.

It was an eventful weekend for Ford, who had a host of family members on hand for the series. In the short series, he scored three of the Power's seven runs, stole the aforementioned two bases and clubbed his seventh homer of the year.

He also led off the game with a base hit, which was followed by a Lorenzo Cain double and an RBI groundout by Mat Gamel, which scored Ford. Mike Bell singled home Cain to give the Power a 2-0 cushion after one inning.

Michael Brantley added an RBI double in the third and Ford wrapped up the scoring in the following inning with his homer.

He was happy his family was there to experience it with him.

"It was good because they are always here to support me, they've always been there for me, especially my mom," he said.

The spotlight also shined brightly on the Power pitching staff this weekend.

In the two-game series, it allowed just one earned run.

Steve Garrison tossed six shutout innings Sunday to improve his season record to 7-6. He allowed only two hits and struck out four.

"He pitches consistently well," Power pitching coach John Curtis said. "He has things to work on, but he has all the tools, the poise, the work habits.

"He's a heck of a young pitcher."

Garrison, just 19 years of age, has posted a 3.45 earned run average this season, and Curtis says he's outgrown his stay in low-A baseball.

"He's proved himself, he's mastered everything he needs to here," Curtis said. "He's improved his command, he knows when to throw strikes, and when not to throw strikes.

"He has four pitches he can get over whenever he wants. He's really distinguished himself with his pitching."

As a team, it was West Virginia's 10th shutout. The Power improved to 33-29 in the second half, and 72-59 overall.

The Power is off today before beginning the season's final home stand on Tuesday against Greensboro.

We jinxed Joe Thatcher today, a single and a walk in the 8th -- after a Lou Palmisano passed ball put the runners on 2nd and 3rd, Thatcher got a big strikeout for the second out of the inning but was then lifted for Matt Yeatman, who surrendered a two-run ground ball single. Stars down, 5-3, bottom of the 8th.

Let Joe pitch to righties, too!

Final: Brevard County 4, Jupiter (Marlins) 3

At least somebody beat the Marlins this week...

Brevard County Box Score and Game Log:

Remember these guys? Charlie Fermaint (three hits), Hernan Iribarren and C.J. Medlin (two hits apiece) combine for all seven Manatee hits; nice four-inning outing for Sam Narron, another piece of Doug Melvin's Texas organization connection...

In progress: Arizona Royals 8, Arizona Brewers 0, after three innings

Ah, those crazy Maryvale kids; 22nd round pick J.T. King made two early-season appearances with Helena and hadn't been seen since -- he pitched an inning to start this game; Shane Hill didn't get defensive help, but he still hasn't had a good first summer on the mound for the A-Crew; the boys have three more errors than hits (zero) thus far...

Let's see, Zach Braddock, Steve Garrison, Derek Miller -- former Northeast Area Scout Tony Blengino had a knack with lefties, huh? Nice job by Zach tonight. Throw in Darren Ford, Angel Salome, Mark Rogers, not a bad track record there for Tony, now working in the central scouting office with Jack Z.

Final: Nashville 12, Albuquerque (Marlins) 4

Dana Eveland has been absolutely fantastic in AAA this year. His numbers aren't as Flashy as Yo's, but he really deserves another long term chance in the majors...maybe 2 or 3 more chances...Another good game by Vinny Rotino

Sounds Pound Isotopes In Series Opener

ALBUQUERQUE ? The Nashville Sounds broke out of their offensive funk in a big way on Monday evening at Isotopes Park, hammering out 16 hits ? including nine during a nine-run fifth inning ? in a 12-4 drubbing of Albuquerque in the opener of a four-game series.

With the win, Nashville (74-63) increased its lead over Iowa back to three games in the American Conference Northern Division; the Cubs lost at Oklahoma, 1-0. The Sounds? magic number to clinch a playoff berth was reduced to four with seven games remaining in the season.

Sounds starter Dana Eveland (6-4) continued his run of recent strong starts, earning a victory for the third consecutive outing by holding the Isotopes to two runs on four hits over seven innings of work. The quality start was the southpaw?s sixth in his last eight games. He kept the Isotopes in check early on, allowing only one hit and facing one batter over the minimum through his first four frames.

Every Sounds starter, including Eveland, recorded at least one hit and scored a run in the contest. Seven of the nine drove in a run on the evening. The 12 runs scored matches the team's best effort of the year, previously accomplished on April 30 at New Orleans.

Third baseman Vinny Rottino continued his red-hot hitting by pacing Nashville with a 3-for-5 evening at the plate that included a pair of doubles and two runs scored. Rottino is batting .411 (30-for-73) in the month of August.

The Sounds jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning against Albuquerque starter Jason Vargas, using back-to-back doubles by Rottino and Chad Moeller.

Drew Anderson extended the Nashville lead to 2-0 in the third when he plated Chris Barnwell with a one-out RBI double. The outfielder has opened his Sounds career by hitting safely in eight of his first 10 games with the club.

Nashville put the game out of reach in the fifth by sending 14 batters to the plate during a season-best nine-run inning that increased the lead to a whopping 11-0. Vargas took the brunt of the damage, surrendering seven runs in the frame including three on Graham Koonce?s 17th home run of the year.

Rottino added an RBI two-bagger later in the frame before Eveland helped his own cause with a two-run double to left that greeted Albuquerque reliever Ross Wolf. Zach Sorensen and Barnwell contributed RBI singles before Koonce wrapped up the scoring with a run-scoring groundout, giving the first baseman four RBIs in the inning.

Sorensen accomplished a feat that had not been done by a Sound since the 2002 campaign in the top of the fifth when he recorded a pair of singles in the frame. Chris Pritchett had been the last to post two knocks in a single inning, achieving the feat on July 21, 2002 against Calgary.

Albuquerque finally got on the board against Eveland in the bottom of the sixth when Edgar Gonzalez scored on a Robert Andino sacrifice fly. The home team picked up its second run in the seventh when Gonzales drew a two-out, bases-loaded walk from Eveland, who faced a bags-full one-out jam and escaped with only that one run scoring as he retired Eric Reed on an inning-ending groundout.

Nashville added its final run in the top of the ninth against Isotopes reliever Jim Brower. Tony Gwynn delivered a two-out, pinch-hit single to extend his hitting streak to eight games, the longest active on the club. Sorensen followed with his third hit of the ballgame, an RBI double to right.

Chris Demaria worked a scoreless eighth behind Eveland before Alec Zumwalt took over in the ninth and allowed a pair of two-out Albuquerque runs to bring the score to its final 12-4.

Vargas (2-6) took the loss for the Isotopes after surrendering nine runs on 10 hits over his 4 1/3 frames of action.

The teams continue the series on Tuesday with another 7:35 p.m. CT matchup. Right-hander Justin Lehr (4-6, 3.69) takes the hill for Nashville to face Albuquerque left-hander Chris George (3-6, 5.[/i]

Huntsville Site Game Summary

www.huntsvillestars.com/news/news.asp?newsId=987

Palmisano Powers Stars to Comeback Victory

Lou Palmisano belted a two-out, solo home run in the eighth inning to complete a three-run rally that carried Huntsville to a 6-5 comeback win over Mississippi in the fourth game of the final five-game regular season set at Joe Davis Stadium. The Stars have won the first four games by a total of five runs to extend their win streak to a season-high seven games and improve to 38-25 in the second half. Huntsville holds on to a three and a half game lead over Tennessee and Chattanooga, both victorious earlier in the evening. The Stars also established a franchise record with their eleventh consecutive win at home, dating back to August 1.

Ralph Roberts opened the eighth inning on the hill for Mississippi and was greeted by a Ryan Braun double into the alley in right-center field. Brendan Katin followed by belting a 1-1 offering off the Stars? tri-vision star to the left of the scoreboard for a home run to tie the game at five. Katin has hit four long balls, including two game-winners, since joining the Stars on August 18. Roberts retired the next two hitters before Palmisano smacked a 1-1 offering over the wall in left field for his fourth of the season, second game-winner and first since May 29 vs. West Tenn. Roberts was making his first appearance at the double-A level this season and tenth of his career.

Mike Rozema singled and Onil Joseph walked with one out and advanced on a passed ball charged to Palmisano before Joe Thatcher struck out Matt Young for the second out in the top half of the eighth. Thatcher was replaced by Matt Yeatman, who gave up a two-run single to Yunel Escobar that put the Braves on top at 5-3. Yeatman, who fanned Josh Burrus to end the inning, picked up his second win of the series after going winless since May 17.

Joe Valentine took over on the hill for the Stars in the ninth inning and fanned Ivan Terrazas and retired Ray Serrano on a fly ball before Josh Arteaga doubled. Eddie Perez was called on to pinch-hit and was fanned by Valentine for the final out in the game for a second time in three days. Valentine earned his 10th save and has allowed only one run in his last 13 innings.

Rozema?s two-run double off of starter Tim Dillard gave the Braves a 3-2 lead in the sixth before Brad Nelson homered off of Mississippi starter Matt Harrison in the bottom of the inning to tie the game. Nelson has hit three long balls in the series to push his season total to six, all of which have been hit at home.

The series wraps up Tuesday night with left-hander Manny Parra taking the hill for Huntsville against Braves? southpaw Dan Smith. Coverage of the game begins at 6:50 p.m. central time and can be heard locally on ESPN Radio 1450 AM and through the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com.
