Power approaching more individual records

Michael Dailey

Charleston Daily Mail sportswriter

When the South Atlantic League playoffs begin next week, the West Virginia Power will not be a participant.

But despite the team's inability to reach postseason, there have been a few superb individual performances on display throughout the season.

A pair of Class A franchise records already have fallen and with seven games to play, a couple more marks are within reach as the Power opens its final home series of the season at 7:05 p.m. today (6:05 Central) against Greensboro.

Outfielder Lorenzo Cain started the record breaking by surpassing the former club mark for hits in a season (150) set by Bobby Perna in 1992.

Cain, a 17th round pick by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 2004 draft, currently has a league-best 154 hits and ranks fourth in the batting title race with a .305 average.

With 86 runs on the season, Cain likely will fall short of the franchise record of 106 set by Scott Pose in 1990, but has a shot at second place if he can surpass the 93 runs scored by Dee Jenkins in 1993.

With another 40 at bats this season, Cain also will break the club mark of 544 set by Steve Gibralter in the 1991 season. Cain is only 15 at bats behind second-place holder Alcides Escobar, who had 520 at bats last season.

Fellow outfielder Darren Ford also placed his name in the franchise record book by surpassing the single-season stolen base mark of 61, established by Mike Curry in 1999.

Ford, who's blessed with world class speed, has 62 stolen bases entering tonight's play and with 91 runs on the season has an even greater chance to reach Jenkins' 1993 run total.

Another record within reach is the club, single-season home run mark of 20 set by former Alley Cat Jason Parsons during the 1997 season.

Third baseman Mat Gamel enters tonight with 17 homers, good for sixth in the league.

Gamel has three homers this season against Greensboro pitching, including two during a three-game series in North Carolina last week.

However, it's not just Power batters that have had solid seasons.

Right-handed starter Will Inman followed up a 6-0 record as a rookie in Helena last season, by entering tonight's series with a 10-1 record and a sterling 1.30 earned run average.

Inman, tonight's starting pitcher, has allowed a miniscule 14 earned runs in 97 innings pitched.

Assuming the Power plays its remaining seven scheduled games, Inman must toss a combined 13 2/3 innings in his final two starts of the season, to qualify for the league ERA title.

"We had a lot of ups and downs during the season, but in terms of how these guys have improved throughout the course of the season, it's been outstanding," said Power Manager Mike Guerrero. "We've seen a lot of maturity by the players and we've seen a lot of development in both the baseball and personal sides of the players.

"Individually, there's been a lot of accomplishments for the players to be proud of. When you talk about 19- and 20-year-olds reaching those kinds of goals in a league with an average age of 23 or 24, that says a lot about the development for these kids this year."

But not all the records were set on the playing field.

In 62 home dates entering this evening, 233,932 fans have passed through the turnstiles, surpassing last season's previous record of 233,555.

"I think this season was fantastic," said Power General Manager Andy Milovich. "It felt good from our standpoint, to be able to come into it with an entire off-season to prepare.

"We took a step forward from an attendance standpoint, from an operational standpoint and on the field we took a step forward.''

Now, Milovich and his staff will spend at least a portion of the coming off-season to improve operations in the club's third season in Appalachian Power Park.

"In the first couple weeks of the off-season, we'll kind of take a step back and the staff will sit down and brainstorm a little bit about things we can do next season," Milovich said.

Check out Gordon's stats. Dude is going to be good. If the Royals can find some pitching, they might be tough in a few years. Wonder if they'll trade Teahan or move him to the OF?

I just wanted to point out that Inman is going up against Chris Volstad, one of the Marlins top prospects.

EDIT: Yowza, Toby, are you listening to this one as well or following the box score? Inman's got it going on tonight, tune in if you can.

I think somebody with a lot more time on their hands since the 'Fest season ended just jinxed Inman. Coincidence? I think not.

Huntsville's final regular season game with Mississippi has been cancelled. Strong thundershowers moved through the area about 3 pm today. The tarp was put on the field in time but according to GM Tom Van Schaak, strong winds ripped about a 100' hole in it the middle where it was covering 2nd base. About 20 minutes before game time, grounds crew was trying to dry the area with an industrial strength fan and rake the area around first base, but the game was called at about 7 pm to "unsafe playing conditions."

The Stars are 3½ on top with six games to go. The magic number is 4. I heard Tim Dillard will start half of a doubleheader on Saturday.

Omar Aguilar is the starter for the baby Brewers. Nice to see his name in the box scores.

Mike Bell stays red-hot, with a walk-off RBI single to push the Power past Greensboro this evening in the bottom of the 9th.

EDIT: Just noticed Bell's hit was a ruled a double according to the game log. Interesting how they score games in the minors, as he didn't have to move past 1B for Cain to score the winning run.

Sounds Fall To Isotopes, 7-2

ALBUQUERQUE â?? The first-place Nashville Sounds dropped a 7-2 decision to Albuquerque on Tuesday night at Isotopes Park in the second game of a four-game set.

Despite the loss, Nashville (74-64) maintained its three-game lead over Iowa in the American Conference Northern Division; the Cubs lost at Oklahoma, 5-4. The Soundsâ?? magic number to clinch a playoff berth was reduced to three with six games remaining in the season.

Isotopes second baseman Edgar Gonzalez gave the home team a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning with a two-run homer to left off Sounds starter Justin Lehr, his third roundtripper of the campaign.

Albuquerque extended the lead to 3-0 in the second when Isotopes starting pitcher Chris George helped his own cause with an RBI triple off Lehr.

The home team upped the advantage to 5-0 in the fifth on a pair of RBI singles by Chris Aguila and Nick Trzesniak against Lehr.

Shortstop Chris Barnwell stole home with two outs in the top of the sixth inning to account for Nashvilleâ??s first run of the evening. The theft was his second of the game and 15th on the year.

Nashville made it a 5-2 game against reliever Chris Resop in the eighth when Tony Gwynn recorded a one-out double, moved to third on a Barnwell single, and scored on a fielderâ??s choice groundout off the bat of Zach Sorensen, who paced the Sounds with a 2-for-4 evening. Gwynn went 1-for-4 to extend his hitting streak to nine games, the longest active on the club.

Steve Bray and Dennis Sarfate each worked a perfect inning in relief of Lehr before the Isotopes wrapped up the eveningâ??s scoring against Allan Simpson in the bottom of the eighth. Robert Andino delivered a two-out, two-run single on a 3-2 offering from the right-hander to extend the home clubâ??s lead to 7-2.

Albuquerque starter Chris George (4-6) picked up the victory to improve to 9-3 lifetime against the Sounds. The left-hander allowed one run on five hits while striking out six batters over 6 1/3 innings.

Lehr (4-7) took the loss after giving up five runs on nine hits over five frames of work.

The teams continue the series on Wednesday night with another 7:35 p.m. CT matchup. Right-hander Ben Hendrickson (9-7, 2.85) looks to end a four-start winless stretch when he takes the mound for Nashville to square off against Albuquerque southpaw Adam Bostick (1-1, 3.00).

Final: West Virginia 3, Greensboro (Marlins) 2

West Virginia Site Game Review

POWER RING BELL IN THE NINTH

Tied at 2-2 with two on and two out in the bottom of the ninth inning of Tuesday nightâ??s game at Appalachian Power Park, Mike Bell ripped the game winning RBI single into right center field to score Lorenzo Cain as the West Virginia Power defeated the Greensboro Grasshoppers 3-2.

Greensboro scored the first run of the game in the top of the third inning when Gary Roche hit a ground ball to second base with Greg Burns on third. Power second baseman Mike Bellâ??s throw to the plate did not arrive in time, allowing Burns to score the go ahead run. West Virginia tied the game in the home half of the third after Nestor Corredor scored on Brett Hayesâ??s throwing error.

In the fourth inning the Power took the lead on Tony Festaâ??s solo homerun, his sixth of the season. Two innings later Agustin Septimo tied the game at 2-2 with a solo homerun, his seventh. Greensboro pitcher Mauro Zarate retired the first two batters in the bottom of the ninth inning before issuing two out walks to Lorenzo Cain and Mat Gamel. Mike Bell then ripped the second pitch of the at bat into center field to score Cain, marking the tenth time this season that West Virginia has won in their final at bat.

Will Inman, Patrick Ryan and Kevin Roberts combined to strike out 16 batters in the game, second most in a single game for the Power this season. West Virginia struck out 17 against Kannapolis back on June 22nd. Will Inman accounted for 11 of the 16 strikeouts, matching his single game season high. Inman pitched six innings, gave up two runs on three hits but did not get the decision. West Virginia has now won four in a row, their longest winning streak of the second half.

Kevin Roberts (6-10) struck out the only two batters he faced in the ninth inning and got the victory, while Mauro Zarate (3-4) suffered the loss. The Power are 73-59 on the year and 34-29 in the second half after the win while the Grasshoppers fell to 67-65 overall and 31-31 in the second half after the loss.

The Power will begin a three game series against the Greensboro Grasshoppers at Appalachian Power Park on Wednesday night. The Power will throw right hander Shawn Ferguson (2-2, 6.68 ) and Greensboro will counter with right hander Joel Fountain (0-0, 0.00). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
