In order to add that needed 11th pitcher to Huntsville, LHP Manny Parra gets his promotion back up to the Stars (from Brevard County).

In other Manatee news, outfielder Hasan Rasheed has been placed on the disabled list with an undisclosed injury.

Manny Parra down on the farm..

it's been a strange journey for manny...a top prospect once, only derailed by several injuries...could finally make the majors with a strong run at the end of the year...of course, he's got to be re-added to the 40 man..

i guess i never realized his whip was as high as it has been since he left beloit..nonetheless, manny has k'ed a guy per inning on his career..and he doesn't allow many hits, so he could still be a good major leaguer..

Not so fast on that 11-man Huntsville staff...

Huntsville Press Release:

The Milwaukee Brewers have promoted pitcher Manny Parra from high class-A Brevard County of the Florida State League to Huntsville and placed pitcher Khalid Ballouli on the disabled list, retroactive to July 28. Parra is scheduled to start for the Stars Wednesday night in the final game of their five-game set with Chattanooga.

Parra, returning from off-season shoulder surgery, made 14 starts and one appearance in relief for the Manatees, going 1-3 with a 2.96 earned run average. The southpaw worked 54 2/3 innings, allowing 47 hits, walking 32 and striking out 61. Parra went 5-6 with a 3.96 ERA in 16 starts for Huntsville last season before being shut down for the year on July 1.

Ballouli has been sidelined by a shoulder strain for a second time this season after suffering the injury in his last outing on July 27 against Birmingham. The right-hander was out of action from May 17 through June 5 and was moved to the bullpen on his return to the roster. Ballouli is 2-4 with a 4.15 ERA in seven starts and 16 appearances in relief.

Nashville Media Notes:

BEATTIE ADDED TO ROSTER; JARAMILLO TRANSFERRED TO SINGLE-A:

Infielder Andrew Beattie has been added to the Sounds roster today after signing with the Brewers as a free agent yesterday. The 28-year-old opened the season in the Oakland

Athletics organization and batted .269 (43-for-160) with six HR & 30 RBI in 44 games at Triple-A Sacramento before being released on July 30. Beattie missed the first two months of the season while on the River Cats? disabled list due to a fractured/dislocated left thumb.

To make room on the roster for Beattie, infielder Milko Jaramillo was transferred from Nashville to Single-A Brevard County. Jaramillo, who had rejoined the Sounds on Saturday from Double-A Huntsville, appeared in only one game during his second stint with Nashville, going 0-for-3 in a start on Sunday (3B). He batted .176 (3-for-17) in eight games for the Sounds on the year.

Infielder Steve Sollman has landed on the Brevard County disabled list with a thumb injury -- we don't know how serious the injury is.

This is what prompted the Ned Yost promotion, as Sollman saw a good deal of time at first base for the 'Tees.

Perhaps the 11th pitcher contending Huntsville needs --

MiLB.com now lists 31-year-old veteran RHP Luther Hackman (149 big league appearances) on the Huntsville roster. Perhaps Hackman was pitching in independent ball earlier this season, but he hasn't been active in affiliated pro ball since 2004, a season during which he pitched with Nashville (Pirates organization).

We learn more from Huntsville's site:

Veteran Arm Added to Stars' Staff

The Milwaukee Brewers have signed veteran right-hand pitcher Luther Hackman and assigned him to the Huntsville Stars. He is expected to be in uniform when the Stars and Mississippi Braves play the third game of their five-game set on Friday night at Trustmark Park.

Hackman had been pitching for the Bridgeport Bluefish in the independent Atlantic Leauge, where he was 8-0 with eight saves and a 2.81 earned run average over 73.2 innings of work. He started the season in the bullpen and was moved into the rotation, lasting at least five innings in each of his nine starts.

The 31-year-old was selected by Colorado in the sixth round of the draft in 1994 and he made his major league debut with the Rockies in 1999, making three starts and appearing twice in relief. Hackman made 10 starts and one outing in relief for the Carolina Mudcats in the Southern League earlier that season, going 4-3 with a 4.04 ERA. He pitched for the St. Louis Cardinals in 2000, 2001 and 2002 and for the San Diego Padres during the 2003 season. Hackman owns a career big league mark of 9-10 with one save and a 5.09 ERA in 149 outings, including nine starts.

Nashville Media Notes:

Vinny Rottino becomes your backup catcher to Chad Moeller for the Sounds...

To make room for Tony Gwynn in Nashville, catcher Mark Johnson was placed on the Sounds? temporary inactive list.

Also, reliever Mike Meyers has left the Sounds to join the Canadian National Team / Team Canada as they prepare for Olympic qualifying. The 28-year-old native of London, Ontario spent his second consecutive season with Nashville in 2006 and posted a 4-5 record and 3.43 ERA (25 ER / 65.2 IP) in 28 games (three starts). He has played for Team Canada throughout his professional career and was on the country?s entry in the World Baseball Classic earlier this year.

Meyers is not expected to rejoin the Sounds during the regular season. Meyers had been placed on the Sounds' disabled list on August 7th with a left calf strain.

Baseball America reported a week or so ago that the Brewers released catcher Bernie Dennis, who was an undrafted signee out of Catholic University in Washington, D.C., last season.

The timing seemed odd, becuase the announcement came just after Dennis appeared in his first and only 2006 game (with the Arizona Brewers), but since Dennis hasn't appeared in a game since, the release appears to be so.

I recall the old Madison Muskies used to often give a pitcher a start and then release him, almost as a goodbye/thank you/here's a chance for a scout to see you type of thing. It happened consistently enough that it wasn't a fluke.

Probably just a kid signed to catch the oodles of pitchers they have and they put him in a game because they knew he was gone.
