Stars Add Veteran Backstop

The Milwaukee Brewers have promoted catcher Carlos Lee to the Huntsville Stars. Lee is expected to be in uniform when the Stars begin a five-game series with Mississippi on Wednesday night, which will bring their roster to a full, active 23.

Lee was released by the Chicago White Sox at the end of April after getting one hit in seven at-bats and driving in two runs for Birmingham in two games. He was signed by the Brewers and played in five games for their Arizona Rookie League team. Lee collected eight hits in 18 at-bats and knocked in six runs.

He set career highs in hits, with 85, home runs, 14, runs batted in, 48, and total bases last season while playing in 84 games for Winston-Salem, Chicago?s high-A affiliate in the Carolina League. Lee was originally signed as a free agent by the White Sox in May, 2000 and is the younger brother of current Brewers outfielder Carlos Lee.

Tuesday's West Virginia Press Release:

CHARLESTON, WV (July 11, 2006) - The West Virginia Power, Class A affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers have made another roster move.

Today, right handed pitcher Wilfrido Laureano was taken off the suspended list and right handed pitcher Ryan Marion was placed on the DL to make room on the roster.

Laureano was 3-2 with a 4.27 ERA and one save over 25 appearances before being placed on the suspended list last week.

Marion has been placed on the disabled list due to a stomach illness. Marion was 0-0 with a save and a 7.48 ERA over 14 appearances before being placed on the disabled list.

Well, considering we weren't notified earlier of Laureano's suspension, nor that Marion had been activated from a previous DL stint, these moves are actually status quo to us http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif .

Hopefully Tom Haudricourt and/or Adam McCalvy, both of whom are covering the Brewers in Phoenix this weekend, or perhaps Jim Powell in his pre-game tonight, will be able to shed some light on the following news, especially since so many senior officials of the Brewers are in Arizona as well. We have nothing but the transaction for now:

The Manatees have placed RHP Mark Rogers on the disabled list, retroactive to July 5th.

West Virginia LHP Derek Miller has received his long-anticipated promotion to Brevard.

No news on a backfill of the Power roster spot yet.

The Brewers have babied Rogers for 3 years. If this anything more than just a rest period, we are the most jinxed team ever. My only question is how long before Yo goes on the DL?

seriously, someone should just call the manatees office and ask...and inform them that the reason nbody cares about their team is because they do a really bad job of promoting it and spreading info

Jinxed or another case for not drafting high school pitchers in the first round?

And weren't there injury concerns about Rogers because he threw across his body? That's why they've been revamping his mechanics.

Hopefully it's minor, but not altogether surprising.

It could be the same blister problem that Mark had last year, too. It's hard to jump to a conclusion without any news beyond "he's on the DL".

I'm going to remain positive until given news to make me worry.

RHP Shawn Ferguson, the 2006 9th round selection out of Texas Christian University, has been moved up to West Virginia from Helena to fill the spot vacated by Derek Miller. Ferguson will be 24 in January, sound thinking here.

Ferguson's Helena numbers:

Completing the chain of transactions, 20-year-old Dominican RHP Amaury Rivas, one of the few Arizona Rookie pitchers to demonstrate some command of his pitches, has been promoted to Helena. He was signed in February 2005.

Also, LHP Mike Ramlow, who began the year in Helena and was a surprise transfer to Arizona, is back with the Helena squad, and 2006 33rd round pick, second baseman Eric Newton of Santa Clara University, who had struggled in limited playing time with Helena (3-for-21), has been sent to Arizona.

Gwynn Jr. makes major-league debut

MAURICE PATTON, the Tennessean

Tony Gwynn Jr. celebrated the first major league callup of a longtime friend, Tacoma outfielder Adam Jones, earlier in the week. On Saturday the Nashville Sounds outfielder had cause of his own for celebration.

Gwynn, 23, became the fourth participant in last Wednesday's Triple-A All-Star Game to be subsequently promoted to the majors. The Milwaukee Brewers brought him up and activated him before their game against the host Arizona Diamondbacks.

He pinch-hit in the sixth inning Saturday night, grounding out to first base.

The starting center fielder for the Pacific Coast League in Wednesday's contest against the International League stars, Gwynn was ranked fifth in the PCL with 104 hits and second in the league with 24 stolen bases heading into Saturday's play. Both figures led the Sounds, as did his .305 batting average, four triples and 33 multiple-hit games.

He was also second on the team with 55 runs scored and 17 doubles, and third with 35 RBI.

Outfielder Jason Tyner (Rochester/Minnesota) and shortstop Stephen Drew (Tucson/Arizona) were also called up by their respective parent clubs after playing in Wednesday's game.

Picked by the Brewers in the second round of the 2003 draft, Gwynn batted .280 in 61 games with Class A Beloit his first professional season, then hit .243 and .271 in back-to-back seasons with Double-A Huntsville.

Gwynn became the fifth Brewer to make his debut this season ? joining former Nashville players Chris Barnwell, Chris Mabeus and Zach Jackson and current Sounds pitcher Carlos Villanueva.

Gwynn, now a Brewer, has worthy role model

All-star father helps keep son confident

By MAURICE PATTON

Tennessean Staff Writer

The battle isn't over for Tony Gwynn ? not by a long shot.

Called up by the Milwaukee Brewers in time for Saturday night's game against host Arizona, the former Nashville Sounds all-star outfielder has been well schooled in what comes next.

Gwynn's father ? future Hall of Famer, five-time Gold Glove winner, eight-time National League batting champion and 15-time NL all-star Tony Gwynn ? has made sure the 23-year-old knows his next objective.

"He's in a good organization; he's in a position where I think he's up in their eyes already, so we'll sit back and wait and see," the older Gwynn said Wednesday, just hours before his son started in center field for the Pacific Coast League in the Triple-A All-Star Game, and just days before the younger Gwynn got his first promotion to the majors.

"As a parent, my job is to keep him confident," Tony Sr. said. "My job is to keep him always attacking, always trying to get better, and regardless of when it is or where it is he gets called up, the job will be to try to stay there, to not go back."

It's likely that Gwynn will, at least this time, return to the Sounds. He took the Brewers roster spot vacated when veteran infielder Corey Koskie was placed on the disabled list because of the lingering effects of a concussion sustained before the All-Star break.

With Gwynn on pace to hit better than .300 for the first time in his professional career ? he was hitting .305 at the time of his departure from Nashville, after posting a .261 mark over his first three years ? Daddy Gwynn said the improvement has been more mental than physical.

"I think this year he's made a monumental leap because he's understanding now that every time you get up to the plate, it's about you and what you do," he said.

"It's not necessarily about situations or the guy on the hill. It's more about understanding what you have to do, each and every time you get up to the plate. You have to understand how they're attacking you and how you have to attack them back.

"His first couple of years, I think he just went up there and just started swinging; he wasn't really paying attention to what was going on. The bad year he had in Huntsville, his first year in Double-A, I think he really started to realize, 'There's a lot more to this than I've really been paying attention to.' "

Gwynn, whose batting average was up to .333 as late as June 4 before tailing off slightly, stunned his father when he initially chose to pursue baseball beyond his high school years.

"Honestly, I was shocked," Tony Sr. said. "He loved basketball, just like I did. But he decided he wanted to play baseball, and ? we've probably talked more about the game since he turned pro than we ever had in his life. We're kinda on the same page now, because he's starting to understand what it takes to get to the next level."

Though it probably would have been easier for the younger Gwynn to play something other than baseball, he said the inevitable parallels have become old hat by now.

"I've been dealing with it so long, it's like putting on your clothes; it has to happen," he said. "I'm numb to it. I don't really feel it. I've been dealing with it since (youth league). Any time I put on a uniform and stepped on a baseball field, I was dealing with it, and that was from the age of 9 till now. I was probably numb to it even then."

Whether the younger Gwynn's stay in the majors is permanent or temporary, his father intends to enjoy it ? not from the perspective of a former major leaguer, but as a parent.

"I'm having more fun with him trying to get to the big leagues than I had playing in the big leagues," Gwynn said Wednesday. "The journey that he's on, I'm enjoying the heck out of it. ? I have a tough time keeping my composure when I watch him play.

"The average fan has no idea what it's like to be the son of a major league player, what it's like to be the son of a guy people consider to be a pretty good hitter. He's handled it very well. He handles all the stuff very well. I'm very proud of what he's accomplished. He hasn't gotten to where he wants to go, but at the same time, he's learning those lessons you have to learn to get there and stay there."

The Manatees didn?t give an explanation on what the problem is with Rogers but in his last outing his control suffered badly.

Rogers faced 24 batters in five innings of work, he allowed 3 runs - all earned on 5 hits, two for doubles with six walks, three wild pitches (2 were back-to-back scoring one in the 3rd inning) and two stolen basses in a 10-5 loss to Juniper.

News, some previously reported, from West Virginia:

CHARLESTON, WV (July 16, 2006) - The West Virginia Power, Class A affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers have made another roster move.

Today, left handed pitcher Derek Miller was promoted to High Class A Brevard County and left hander Kyle Pawelczyk was placed on the disabled list. Right handers Shawn Ferguson and Ryan Marion were both added to the roster to fill the void left by the lefties.

Derek Miller went 8-2 with a 3.57 ERA and ranked third in the league in strikeouts with 105 before being called up. Right Hander Shawn Ferguson has been called up from Helena to take his place. Ferguson, Milwaukee's ninth round pick in the 2006 draft was 0-2 in Helena with a 3.86 ERA before the call up.

Ryan Marion has been activated from the disabled list and was a 0-0 record with a save and a 7.48 ERA before going on the DL last week. Kyle Pawelczyk has been placed on the disabled list due to a back strain. Pawelczyk was 0-0 with a 3.86 ERA in two appearances.

Well, if his control was bad, that's not really a red flag. If he had walked a couple more, you'd think he was 100%.

Quote:
Rogers shut down: The Brewers shut down 2005 first-round draft pick Mark Rogers for at least three starts after Rogers reported what Melvin called "tightness" in the front of his throwing shoulder.

"It doesn't appear to be anything serious," Melvin said. "He doesn't throw a lot of innings, but he throws a lot of pitches."

Rogers underwent a major mechanical overhaul after the Brewers made him the fifth overall pick in the 2005 First-Year Player Draft. He finally appeared to turn a corner this season at Class A Brevard County. But in three starts since back-to-back seven-inning, 10-strikeout performances in mid-June, Rogers surrendered nine earned runs on 13 hits, 16 walks and seven wild pitches in just 12 innings.

Question.. whats this mechanical overhaul supposed to do for Rogers?

Question.. whats this mechanical overhaul supposed to do for Rogers?

He was throwing across his body, which often causes arm problems in the future. They changed his whole throwing motion to be more mechanically sound.
