I've migrated the old Alumni thread that was pinned to the top of this forum to a staging area for some analysis, updates and re-tooling. It'll be back down the road.

 

In the meantime, the occasional update will be added here.

 

Just in the last two seasons, two former Brewer farmhands -- lefty Craig Breslow, expected to be carried on Boston's 40-man all of this coming off-season, and catcher Eliezer Alfonso, who had a strong campaign for the Giants in 2006, both made it to the major leagues after their release by the Brewers. Not that big a deal, except for the fact that each had to take a job with an independent league team before getting back to afffiliated ball.

St. Paul Catcher Sold to White Sox

 

The American Association of Independent Professional Baseball announced today the contract of St. Paul Saints C Jeremy Frost has been sold to the Chicago White Sox. He is the fourth American Association player purchased by a major league organization since the end of the season. Fort Worth?s RHP Matt Harrington and INF Shawn Williams were sold to the Chicago Cubs and Tampa Bay Devil Rays respectively while Pensacola Pelicans? RHP Tony Pierce went to the Atlanta Braves.

 

Frost, who turns 27 November 19, is expected to have a shot at making the Sox?s AA team in Birmingham in 2007. ?He?s a versatile guy who has power and the bonus of being a better than average runner for a catcher,? said St. Paul manager George Tsamis, who has had 21 player contracts sold to MLB organizations since joining St. Paul in 2003. ?He played wherever we asked him to and did a lot of little things very well. He?s earned this chance.? Frost easily led all American Association catchers last season by throwing out 30 of a potential 64 base stealers.

 

In two seasons at St. Paul, Frost hit 26 home runs with 93 RBI and stole 35 bases in 176 games. When he first arrived with the Saints in 2005, the Floridian spent a majority of his playing time in right field. He moved behind the plate on a regular basis a month into the season and has been a fixture there ever since.

 

The ex-Central Florida star was originally drafted in the 10th round by Milwaukee in 2002. Prior to coming to St. Paul, he played three seasons in the Brewers? system, advancing as high as High Desert in the Class A California League.

Just a sidenote -- RHP Al Hawkins, who spent seven seasons in the Brewer system, the last couple just about wiped out by injury, has been a member of the Grambling football team this season (quarterback, although he has not seen any game action). He was featured in this story on NCAA drug-testing procedures:

Good luck to Jared Fernandez in Japan. I have a feeling he'll do well there and lose a few pounds in the process. Stay away from the sushi. Besides that, don't the Japanese really stress cardiovascular fitness too? This should be an interesting story to watch.

David Nilsson (yes, that David Nilsson), now 37 years old, has signed with the Aiken (South Carolina) Foxhounds of the brand new South Coast League, which will have six teams in the southeastern part of the country in its inaugural season. 6'4", 265 pounds as a listed weight -- check back when games begin in May.

Rangers signed RHP Jamey Wright to a minor league contract and invited him to spring training.

Wright gets enough grounders that he can be adequate insurance for the Rangers. He's definitely not someone who should be in the rotation at the start of the year, but if he's needed as a starter for a few weeks at some point, he could keep the team in some games.
