Is Bill Hall too cocky?

twobrewers

I am a big Bill Hall fan.

But I have seen several instances in the past few weeks with him flashing a little arrogance.

His home run against Detriot cleared the fence before he made a move for first base.

And tonight against the Twins, his deep double high off the wall - he sat and watched that ball for a long time before he took off and didn't make it to second by all that much.

Seeing as he has really been slumping lately. Just got a big contract. Struggled with his new position for a LONG time. Has only 7 home runs. He should go about his business and be happy that he wasn't benched.

But then, that is just me. I am always a fan of the players who act like they have been there before - and will be there again.

I think the Detroit thing was a reaction to his slump. I suppose if I had been slumping badly, and I just homered, I might take a second to admire the fact that I did.

A couple of instances of this type of thing isn't enough to make me think he's somehow turned into a showboater, given his multiple years with the club where he didn't exhibit such behavior.

I suppose if it was a trend I saw continuing, I wouldn't be a fan of it.

Gotta be cocky to be good. Such a fine line between supreme confidence and cocky. I always give the guy the benefit of the doubt, unless a pattern of bad behavior develops. It is so hard to be good in this game, gotta cut 'em some slack. In fact it looks to me that Braun has settled down a bit as he gets more comfortable.

I never really understood why watching a homer for a few seconds was cocky. As long as you don't just stand there and are at least moving towards first base, that seems like a completely normal reaction.

When its not a for sure, like Hall's double, you should be moving a little faster though...

I did not have the pleasure of doing so this past season during spring training, but the past two seasons my wife and I have had the pleasure of talking with Billy for several minutes, and just from those couple of minutes my opinion of him is that he is the furthest thing from arrogant. Both times he was extremely curtious and more than willing to chat it up for a couple of minutes. He really seemed to be a very nice young man and that has made it really easy to root for him since his rookie year. As for the homeruns.....who doesn't watch them. Prince does the same thing. When you make that good of contact with the ball your natural instinct is to watch it for a second or two. It's the same in golf. Watch Tiger when he knows he hits that shot he wants...he twirls the club after his follow through. It's not intentional or in attempt to show up the game or his fellow competitors, it is just a natural instinct when you know you have done something really well.

But why do you have to be cruel to be kind?http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif

I agree with sbrylski on this. Watching homeruns is normal I see tons of players do it. As long as you keep going towards first base and don't make any action to show up the team like trotting backwards or waving goodbye to the ball or something it's fine by me.

I agree though unless it's a no doubter I'd prefer the player run it out if/until it clears the fence.

There are guys who look cocky and are actually jerks.

Then there are guys who look cocky and are actually sweethearts.

Bill Hall is the latter. During the Detroit series, he seemed to be joking around with the Tigers' players during the several instances in which he was on base. After the Brewers got no-hit, BBTN interviewed him, and he was as complimentary about an opponent as any player I've ever seen.

I think the guys who get beaned for "looking cocky" are the ones that are actually jerks. I think the word has spread around the league that Hall is a great guy, and therefore there won't be any retribution for how we momentarily comes across on occasion.

I can accept the home run watch to a certain extent. It is natural and as long as you're heading to first without being too demonstrative, cool. I also accept that Bill needed to look a little longer because he hasn't been exactly tearing it up.

But I can't accept watching the double off the baggie. He needs to get off his horse and run. What if there had been a bobble in the outfield, he could've been on 3rd. if I was Yost I'd fine anyone for that.

On a larger note, the other sports are so rife with showing off, acting out. It's really sickening to me. It's contributed to my decision not to watch NFL at all, and barely watch the NBA. The pure classlessness of the other sports I'd prefer to keep out of MLB. I realize it's just me.

How many fastballs has Hall taken in the ribs over the past season and a half? That's a pretty good barometer whether or not he's too cocky, and I'd say the answer is no.

I don't think thats a good way to tell wether he is cocky or not at all. They guy who show boats isn't the one that gets hit. The star or the next batter is the one that gets hit. Just about every player will admire their long balls. Its when they think they hit one out and it goes off the wall is where I have a problem with it. Billy clearly thought his ball off the wall was gone but still hustled just enough to make it to 2nd. If he would have been thrown out, I would have to think Ned would have a talk with billy.

Fair enough. How many times has the guy behind Hall in the lineup gotten hit?

Hard to tell since he batted 4th with Estrada batting 5th a lot. Estrada swings at the pitches they try to hit him with.

I didn't see it, as I was listening on the radio today, but Jim Powell kinda called Bill out on not running to first base on a foul ball.

Jim said the ball only landed foul by about a foot and that Bill never left the batters box.
