Miller's Miller Time

TooLiveBrew

Jayson Stark noted today (on ESPNEWS) that Damian Miller is the first player ever to hit a walk-off HR in a stadium which shares his surname. Interesting factoid. I'd bet the list of players who played during an MLBPA strike and then went on to hit walkoffs during labor peace is a short one, too.

Stark felt the surname-stadium name walkoff record is one that has a good chance to stand for a long, long time. His quip was, "You don't see too many guys walking around named AT&T or Safeco."

Nice work Damian! I just loved it because it was a bomb & won the game, but there's so much more...

If you're not concerned about spelling, I could see a "Bush" doing it in St. Louis at some point. And if you look at first names, there may be a "Camden" or "Jacob" down the road that could do it. But I agree that it is a very long shot.

Here's another question. Say Brent Brewer makes it to the bigs. Has there ever been a player that had the same last name as his team's nickname?

If you want to do first names, there's always the Cleveland Naps. That's kind of cheating, though, when the team is named after the player.

That’s the only thing Chicago’s good for: to tell people where Wisconsin is.

I teach at UW-Madison and therefore get a lot of spam from activist groups, most of which I delete without even opening. However, I got something last semester from a Socialist activist named Elizabeth Wrigley-Field. I actually read it to make sure it wasn't a joke. (It wasn't. That's her name.)

I would say that her chances of hitting a walk-off anytime soon are pretty slim, though.

I have a friend that named their daughter Camden. Pretty sure she won't hit any homers at the Yards though.

Of course I had to Google her, and (not to generalize too much) her political profile seems to suggest that her kids probably won't be spending a lot of time playing organized sports. But you never know -- maybe he could be the Paul Robeson type.

(Would you say that MLB skews to the right, politically? That's always been my totally anecdotal sense, based on things like Suppan's anti-stem cell ad in MO last year.)

I am not sure if MLB itself skews to the right, but I do remember hearing about Al Leiter and ARod donating a lot of money to the GOP during the '04 election. Juan Gonzalez talked about being elected a Republican governor of Puerto Rico, though I can't seem to locate a site to back this up now. George W's political leanings are perhaps a bit better known now then when he was owner of the Rangers, but I am guessing that most people back then knew where he stood. That being said, Peter Angelos was a major contributer to the Clinton campaign and his dislike of W is the reason why Bush hasn't been invited to throw out the first pitch at Camden Yards as many other presidents have when Washington didn't have a team.

I did the Google thing, but didn't peruse it all that carefully. What I wanted to find, though, was a biography telling us how Ms. Wrigley met Mr. Field.

Same here. I was confused, and thought there might be some major Socialism rally held at Wrigley, but nope, her last name was Wrigley-Field.

Now, I can't wait until Craig hits a walkoff salami at Counsell Park
