Unreal Sheets stat

When you have a 10-3 overall record, any split you think of is probably going to have a pretty good win-loss record associated with it.

For pretty much the first time in his career, Ben Sheets is finally getting run support. For some reason, that really seems to help his win-loss record.

Even though you would come to expect it, that is something that the Brewers haven't ever really had in recent times. Yeah you could argue Sheets has been that, but he's never really had the win totals that he has in those types of games this year. Although it does help that the offense can finally score some runs in his support! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif

Amazing how that works, isn't it?

Ben Sheets has finally realized how to win games, he's a true ace.

I will say that there are some pitchers in baseball that seem to be able to find ways to win 1-0 games more than others. the homers Benny gives up usually keep him from being able to win most games when the Crew only scores 1 or 2 runs. Guys like Randy Johnson, Brandon Webb, Roy Halladay, etc are often in position to win games when their team only scores 1 or 2 runs. It's no knock on Ben. It just seems that he more evenly distributes his runs over the season (at least 2 in most games) whereas some of the other great pitchers give up 0 or 4. On average it's the same, but it can skew win totals a bit.

No I know that.

I guess my sarcasm bit was directed at posters or fans who base their favorite pitcher's value on win totals.

Glad to see Sheets at 10, but his worth to this team I think is more important than his W-L record.

I really, really doubt any of that is true but you just got me to sign up for baseball-reference's PI subscription to find out. I'll let you know.

If you go by ERA, Sheets is not an All Star. His K/BB isn't even where it usually is. This is one heck of a year for pitchers, and everyone is putting up crazy K/BB numbers. Sheets has still got a great ratio, just nothing sick like the 264/40 year (numbers not exact).

So do we now change everything we have been saying over the past four years and put Ben in there because he has 10 wins, tied for most in the league? You betcha!

Wins matter, wins matter!! ERA is overrated!

So approx 28% os Sheet's losses were when he gave up 2 or fewer runs. I just can't bring myself to blame pitching for a loss when 4 or fewer runs are given up.

Fan is short for fanatic.

I blame Wang.

Is it just me, or has it seemed in the past that Benny often had to operate with his ownn team putting out a less-than-optimal lineup when he has pitched more often than some other guys on the staff? For instance, almost always having Moeller back there didn't do him any favors in terms of offensive bite the for a few years. And it often seemed like at least one other non-regular was on teh field when Benny pitched as well.

As noted sarcastically earlier, the Brewers must love Gallardo, because it seems like he's been getting a bit of the Sheets treatment in terms of all different kinds of support since being called up.

Very happy for Ben that he is finally getting W's because we have an offense now that can score rune for him. He doesn't have to go out there and feel like if he gives up 1 or 2 runs that we will lose. He has some room for error if he happens to make a bad pitch or two. Sheets is as good as any pitcher in the NL and I would take him into battle against anyone.

Didn't get to see the game yesterday, but listened to it and saw highlights.

Was Sheets throwing quite a few change-ups yesterday?

If he can incorporate that pitch into his game he we'll be even more fun watch.

He was throwing a lot of changes early before his curveball was working. I know he struck Lee out on a great change in the first inning.

Sheets actually had poor overall stuff yesterday until his curve started working in the 4th or 5th inning.
